Scarra fails the ward because he smartcast items. Can still hold it on smartcasting.

Of if he would just click the ward in his inventory the range icon would show up.

You mean with indicators? He does not use smartcast indicators, he just smartcast everything - which is why he fails at wards.
I am not convinced at all that using smartcast without indicators will make you play better. In fact, from what I have seen, most pro players either do not use smartcast without indicators beside certain edge cases such as Ryze and Cassiopeia.

Personally I find line collision skillshots easier to smartcast but ground targeted moves easier without.

I'm pretty sure most pros play with smartcasting without range indicators and use another key binding for normal casting when they need the range indicator. Smartcasting with range indicators is significantly worse than without because spells cast when you release the key instead of when you press it.

I think the indicators are always useful. Always.
The only advantage of smartcasting without indicators is that it launches a skill on KEYDOWN instead of KEYUP, which depending on your keyboard and how you press keys might make you cast a spell 10~20ms faster.
However, without using indicators, you need to judge lines, etc. by yourself. You may think you are a pro at this game, but it is well-known that the human eyes can be extremely deceiving (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_illusion); to make matters worse, LoL does not have an isometric view, so you also need to factor in depth.

If you can't draw a line from your cursor to your champion then you've got bigger problems than optical illusion depth.
Personally i find that indicators make me play worse in all situations. The extra reaction time is pretty critical. If i need to see the range i will just click the button otherwise i would miss key opportunities that only present themselves for a moment.

Everyone can draw a mental line between two points, but I am saying that some people strongly overestimate their ability to do this.

You might be surprised, but a lot of people can't tell the difference between 925 and 950 distance units in a single glance. And that's the difference between hitting a blitz hook or missing it.

I don't like normal cast in any way. I wish there was a way for QWER to be smartcast and Shift+QWER smart with indicators.

You can QWER smartcast and Shift+QWER for dumbcast. Pretty sure shake does this.
I don't like that though. The reason is that Shift + RMB (not sure if this is default, but at least that's how it works for me) is attack-move, CTL+ skill = level up the skill, and ALT is for controlling pets. If there were another functional key I'd do it.

Just comes down to personal preference really. Normal casting leaves less room for error, but I just like the smoothness of Smartcasting. I've tried the range indicators before but a couple times I accidentally held the button down for a split second and had the indicator pop up when I needed the spell to cast instantly. Just feels clumsy to me personally.

Protip: you can have both regular and smartcast bound for items simultaenously.

I personally have skills on 1234(preference), items q-y, and then shift is self, ctrl is dumb, alt is level up skills.
Definitely is good to have ways to both smart and dumb cast stuff. Stuff like anivia wall especially it's important to dumbcast if time isn't of the essence.

I change my smartcast and dumbcast preference for each champ for each game...

That's pretty hard to do when invading...

^ I do that to. The biggest problem so far is that it raises the chance that I get the keybind bug that crashes the game. I'd probably just leave everything smartcasted (QWER and 2 for those items like DFG) if I wasn't playing Viktor from time to time, and I just can't smartcast his E.
|
Hmm, the only thing I dumbcast is Ali's W. I know there's a couple others I dumbcast, but I can't really think of them right now.

the biggest issue I have with having indicators on is the glitches it causes with sensitive keyboards, when you need perfect and fast execution, the little delay between keydown and key release often means edge cases where someone is on the edge of your range gets away, it also often fucks up really rapid combo casting.
