When I was your age, we only had a single thread in the S&G subforum and we LIKED it.

Biggest thread on TL npnp.

It's always bugged me that LoL is a redheaded stepchild on this site, yet looking at the viewership on Twitch it is by FAR the most-watched esport right now. Twitch viewership last night (I watch before bed); SC2 5k, DotA 5k, WoW 11k (wat), LoL 75k.

I love being a redheaded stepchild, if that means I can discuss in an enviroment with a relative low number of trolls and people that are generally polite to each other. Seriously... why are people so obsessed about increasing the size of this place. I don't care about how many people regularly discuss here, I only care about the quality of the discussion. I'm sure that some people which put so much effort into this sub-forum would like to have a wider recognition and I totally think they deserve it, but selfish-me wants this place to remain small.

There's a very difficult choice between a small, close-knit community and being a widely known, visited, and respected site for LoL strategic and casual discussion. But I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm sure things will be staying how they are for a while, with the exception of a few more... things from the TL LoL staff (maybe, possibly, shh).

And the worst thing that could happen is that you get to be a hipster about the "good days" of TL LoL. =D

Meh... can I be a grumpy old man instead of a hipster. I even throw in a bit of senility like pretending some champions don't exist. What is that Elise you keep on talking about? There is no Elise in this game!

I don't love being a redheaded stepchild but LoL forums feel like TL before SC2 trolls, so I'll take that .

It would be nice if literally all LoL discussion wasn't in a single thread that just gets cleared every few weeks. Subforums broken down by role, for example, would be amazing.

I believe it's been tried, but unsuccessfully. The argument against this is that the game is so interconnected that discussing individual elements can be like putting on blinders. Not that it wouldn't be useful but still.

Oh, and also that we're all lazy. People still decide not to use the Champ threads sometimes. =D

I'm not sure there's enough enough active TL LoL members to warrant its own subforum. We have separate role and champion threads, and while they see some flurries of activities, I don't think it is enough to justify entire General and Strategy categories like the SC2 and DotA2 subforums have.

No, Elo is a composite of hundreds of the effects that a person had on hundreds of matches. Since this can be so variable it is not very good at predicting the future effect of a player on a game. Its like predicting the weather, the more variables you throw in, the harder any set prediction on the outcome if you only know one variable (the player being measured).

I actually don't think elo (or any other rating) system is necessarily at fault here as much as people are for misunderstanding it. First off is the point difference: if your imaginary true skill is 1400, but you are 1300, this is not a catastrophe. It certainly seems like 1400 is a long way from 1300 (it's ONE HUNDRED POINTS!), but those two ratings are not really intended to represent a large gap between players statistically. Secondly is that your "skill" is all the things that are within your control that will increase the chances of the team you are on winning -- this can encompass a shitload of factors that a lot of people wouldn't recognize or would even dismiss as being "skill". For example, being willing to take any role drastically/nearly eliminates the chance you will have someone troll because they were forced into something they didn't want to play -- many people would not consider being a nice guy/pushover skill, or they would argue that not specializing makes it harder for you to develop as a player, but by doing so you your win rate will improve by eliminating an auto-loss which another player in your bracket who wasn't as tolerant as you would have suffered.

One of the assumptions of elo is that the results of a match are based on a normal distribution. Amusingly, we know now this is not actually the case with chess and it is almost certainly not the case with league of legends, but by being based on this assumption it makes elo actually pretty good for a broader applications than just chess. You can throw all sorts of random noise at it (a barrage of trolls, leavers, afkers, etc. all of whom should be just as likely to be on the other team as your team) and that's OK, because randomness will fall under a normal distribution . Interestingly while people swear that "omg theres too much variance/what if you have shitty people on your team/can't carry this blah blah" to defend the idea that their elo is lower than it should be, you don't see a lot of people say "yeah, my elo is inflated -- I totally don't deserve this". Beyond that, people commonly rate themselves based on their PEAK elo, a number which is almost certain to be incorrect.

Unfortunately riot does not release much information at all about the bowels of their ranked system, because this is something that would be pretty easy to prove if you had access to the database of records. However experientally, all you need is to put someone on an account with a lower elo than they've proven they can maintain and see how difficult it is to move into the range appropriate for them. Even from my own experience, I was pretty solidly ~1250 in S2 and started out S3 with something like 1050 after my placement matches went sour, and the dominance I had on games as a newbie playing with slightly worse newbies was dramatic even in my secondary/tertiary roles and it took relatively little time for me to put the points back on.

What i don't quite understand is how Ryze has not gotten any nerf. Is this just because too many people buy archangels on him and thus don't get to know just how OP he is? I have seen Ryze get 3 kills in a 1v5 situation, where he literally just teleported into the whole enemy team alone. Like, if i were a mid player, i would just play ryze every game. Maybe i should just still do it. He has absolutely no problem with buying armor against ad mids, can probably outtrade them anyways, and just does bonkers damage while being tanky, all of that damage being AE due to his ult, and having lots of spellvamp on top of it. The only thing he does not have is large mobility, so maybe one could deal with him in a pokecomp. But good luck getting that working in soloqueue.

Ryze's laning phase is weaker than other top teir champs, and he can be beaten pretty solidly by a wide variety of common mids. Additionally, his midgame is fairly weak too (compare to Diana, Kat, etc)

However, do NOT let a Ryze make it to 6 items. He's like the Kog'maw of AP- once he gets fullbuild, you pretty much win the game.

It sounds like you let a Ryze get fed, then he pwned you with his ult one time. No need to get butthurt, it happens all the time to us APs when bot feeds and we can't even get a spell off in teamfights without Graves or Corki oneshotting us.

exactly this.. I love playing ryze simply because a lot of people play too passive, if ryze has equal farm to you past level 6 your in trouble because you did not shut him down.. he needs to be completely shut down and its mid/junglers fault if that does not happen.. I have had games as ryze where i have gone 13-0-9 just because i've been allowed to crush mid and got fed.. other times i have gone like 2-9-9 because i was camped super hard early game and dispite having wards when you have a jarven with mob boots who is camping you it forces mistakes.. espc because he basically has 0 escapes once somebody is on him..

So, basically, if the enemy has ryze, there is nothing i can do unless i play mid? I am completely dependent on my mid not only not losing lane, but actively shutting him down hard? That is pretty annoying.

There isn't even much that shuts down Ryze really. Boots aren't required anymore, so his early weakness isn't nearly as pronounced as in Season 2.

He has no escapes- Panth top lane, any jungler with a snare, and a keen eye on Ryze is the end of his game. It's very hard for Ryze to catch up when behind as well. Just make sure you know when he's in a game you have to shut him down in lane.

I don't love being a redheaded stepchild but LoL forums feel like TL before SC2 trolls, so I'll take that .

It would be nice if literally all LoL discussion wasn't in a single thread that just gets cleared every few weeks. Subforums broken down by role, for example, would be amazing.

I'm not sure there's enough enough active TL LoL members to warrant its own subforum. We have separate role and champion threads, and while they see some flurries of activities, I don't think it is enough to justify entire General and Strategy categories like the SC2 and DotA2 subforums have.

The amount of active TL LoLers could be related to the quality of LoL support- I have no evidence for this, but it's possible. For example, I NEVER go to /r/Starcraft, but I often have to use /r/leagueoflegends simply because the LoL support isn't great.

Well his W could be counted as an escape. How can you engage him if he root you in place and runaway? Ryze even from behind can build tanky and still be very useful late game. There are no many AP mid could do that. On paper it sounds easy to shut down other team's mid but the other team has their own jungler and top too.

Anyway I don't think Ryze deserve a nerf tbh.

Hey now, the quality of the LoL content on TL is pretty damn high... it's just there's only so much coverage we can do as a small staff for an unofficial subforum. We could always use more volunteers!
