If the reward were small, I can see how they could say "Can't foresee any negative consequences" remark. But good grief that is nutters.
At least they'll probably smack Rengar with the nerf bat seven ways til Sunday given his win rates. Still... Stacks are somewhat of a non issue in late-late game, imo. Even if you die, as long as you get one assist or kill you go even on stacks, and getting multiple assists is easy with Bola and Shout. As soon as teamfights start, you should get stacks pretty quickly as long as you're not getting focused and exploded before you can even hit a single target. The thing is, because of the active, entering a fight with full stacks and 1 less than full stacks is actually a big deal. Not being able to lose the stacks means you always have full stacks going into a fight, as opposed to the awkward scenario where you have 13 stacks because you died last fight, and can't use the active unless your team kills someone. Is it gamebreaking? No. But it is potentially relevant. Honestly though, my biggest beef is that the time when the challenge triggers is seemingly random. Rengar and Kha'zix will kill each other a lot of times throughout the game. One of those kills will randomly award the victor with a permanent benefit. How is that fair or sensible? It would be much more reasonable if the challenge always immediately triggered upon both conditions being met, so there's no possibility of the challenge triggering randomly just before one of them dies in a teamfight.
Rengar's Necklace doesn't have an active (it was removed during the PBE). It does have extra benefits at full stacks (ultimate duration and bonus ferocity on his next ability), but they aren't game-changing. It's also very common to maintain full stacks if you die in a teamfight, simply because of postmortem assists.
I would guess that the trigger for the hunt isn't random, it just isn't understood yet. I'd guess it's a set time after Kha'zix hits six, or a check that occurs at specific intervals (similar to when buff camp health is updated). It still isn't a good idea to have it so obfuscated.

My main complaint is why is such a specific STORY element in my soup of COMPETITIVE GAMEPLAY? No one cares if having 3 ninjas on your team decreases their HP by 3, but if Riot's devoting entire gameplay elements to a story for the sake of coolness it just leaves me confused as to what their priorities really are and what kind of game I'm supposed to be playing.

Summoners, I have a dilemma – my boar, Bristle, has gone home to the tundra for vacation while I have stayed the course on the Fields of Justice, and I miss him terribly. What is the Darkrider without her ride? Her faithful companion? It’s been a whole 20 minutes since I’ve uploaded an adorable picture of him to Facebook. I long for battle, summoners, but this lull in the fight has already taken its toll. Let me get straight to the point – I am bored. Bristle was always the one to suggest what to do on a Saturday night, or take me to the trendiest restaurants in the Freljord, or know which taverns have the best happy hours, shoe shopping, which lane to gank…
Find me a companion while Bristle is away with his adorable boar family. Cure me of this languishing boredom at any cost and we’ll see about saving you some cold, hard RP on whoever doesn’t make the cut.
I giggled

The lore team should really not be in charge of game design decisions, no more than they should be in charge of managing enterprise servers.

Deman actually has his details wrong--Season 1 was in full swing well before Go4LoL existed. Also, I don't think Go4LoL's prize pool was ever as high as he's saying it was. Monthly finals were always €500 (or $500 for US Go4LoLs).
I don't even know why this is an argument though. I don't see how its a bad thing that Riot is willing to spend money to grow the competitive scene. While Slasher definitely has a belligerent bent to what he's saying, it's also true--Riot has spent a lot of money on competitive LoL, and it has helped the game grow far more quickly than it would have otherwise. Again, I don't see why anyone sees that as a bad thing.

It scares people that money can spark up an ESPORT. The common argument generally involves something along the lines of "WHY NOT JUST PUT $1 MILLION ON MY LITTLE PONY ONLINE". Well, at least that's the TL response, but I'm guessing everyone here has seen the unadulterated hatred for LoL that the (only) SC2/BW fans have.

I think the biggest detraction anti-LoL players have is that Riot throwing monies at it means less grassroot tournaments and such. We certainly don't have the amount of (small) tournaments that SC2 has but like you said, why the hell does that matter? Great irony is when DotA fans bring it up as if LoL would simply collapse if Riot wasn't paying for all the checks. But what about Valve and The International... that was the starting point of all this, lol.

Its the SC2 community that really hates LoL.

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, but it's simply untrue to say that BW fans don't dislike (yes I have to use double negative because if I said they like it, you'd argue they don't like it, just that they have no problem with it) League. I know I've seen it from both. But no need having a few bad apples spoil the fun, right?

In fairness though, the International is one tournament--teams still have to and do play other events throughout the year, whereas Riot controls the entire tournament season. Having one large tournament at the end of the season is fine, but it starts to get dodgy with the concept of "circuit points" and non-circuit events essentially being second-class tournaments.
Empirically, this worked out fine in Season 2 though. There were still plenty of active non-circuit lans, and teams of all levels competed in them. It's certainly silly to say all of that would have fallen apart without Riot's money. The real question is how the scene will evolve in the face of Riot's S3 Circuit.
