When are you building Athene's? It always seemed like an upgrade you wouldn't bother with until much later in the game, like Hexdrinker -> Maw.

I like it on Ori and swain, don't play anivia
Ori: cdr is really nice, and she can be a mana hog so overall I like it. (although I remain unconvinced I might go back to AA+RoA build fo the ap)
Swain: Proc on kill or assist is perfect for teamfights + Swain ult.
Kog: Been saying this item would be terrible for kog since it appeared on the beta realm, no amount of regen will benefit Artillery spam as much as AA+RoA
also, where the fuck is this 4th ban already. people banning Darius really cramping my style.

which is exactly my problem because building athenes + one or both of them means investing tons and tons of gold on your mana pool
i've tried building it in place of RoA for early game but it falls off mid-late game where you need to have a large mana pool
as it is right now i can see going something like tear>chalice>athene's which works well enough but i can't seem to justify it over RoA + tear in conjunction if i want to spent that much gold on mana and i get more survivability + AP and mana out of the deal while only losing some MR and CDR
on kog going tear>athene's solved all of my mana issues late game from artillery spamming

I just noticed playing a game vs a morgana with her new skin, it is really damn frustrating. All of her spells look so weird I don't know wtf is going on. Anyone else get this?

Unless my reading comprehension doesn't work for it, wouldn't you invest in mana regen, not flat mana to get a bigger increase? It increases your mana regeneration by a scaling amount. 24*1.1=26.4mp5. Getting flat mana wouldn't do anything that it doesn't already.

the issue that i have with mana regen alone is that by late game 5-6 spells puts you in a constantly oom state unless you have a large down time where you can let your mana regen by it self
flat mana means you can just keep on casting and not worry as much about the rate at which it is regening

True damage on a champion ability has never been balanced. There have been tsunamis of complaints about every true damage ability that's been around and Riot has even acknowledged reading them, but they always claim "it's not an issue" and keep doing it.
You only need 180 bonus AD to deal 950 true damage as Varius, which basically means a single stacked BT, a Janna shield, and just about any other AD item (dblades, wriggles, bruta, etc.).

this just in, if you play j4 and darius on teh same team, and you do an EQ combo with jarvan to knock them up, then darius ult while they're still in the air, you unlock the "ALLEY OOP" achievement. i guess riot really has been working on achievements this whole time, good guy riot. waiting on bball jersey skins now

I don't see any reason to get athenes unless you can blow almost the entirety of your mana pool almost instantly (like kassadin). If you need mana roa or FH is probably better for 3k.

His entire kit is slightly silly, it's more or less everything a melee dps could want aside from sustain. He's very strong right now, I can't honestly think of a whole lot that counters him aside from lots of heals and focus fire.

no sustain or mobility. honestly, his late game is jawkward as hell, but dear lord, the early beats he can put on people in lane and early teamfights are insane. I just wheeled around on an amumu with like 800 HP when I had like 50 HP and just insta killed him with QautoWR
