IMO the best supports right now are sona, nidalee, and alistar Eh speaking as someone who is playing Cait/Kog <1600 right now, all I want is a support who can occasionally drop a heal. Nobody seems to ban Kog or Cait, so one of the two should be available, and both do pretty well with just someone to keep them healed up until they get a Wriggles (get that shit in low elo, always!).

If lol comps were analogous to fighting games, this would be your standard balanced fighter, good at everything, great at nothing. That does not mean that it is the only way to play. It is perfectly acceptable to run, say an extra bruiser and pull out the ranged ad. As long as you arent fighting under a tower, your team is going to be much stronger than the opponents'. Or trade the bruiser for an extra ap, and go for quick bursty teamfights instead of longer, drawn out ones and the ability to initiate anywhere you want. Dont be trapped by the confines of standard. It only serves to limit your ability to win if you step a tiny bit outside your comfort zone. You misunderstand me. The paragraph you quoted is making the same point you're making. I can see why it might be confusing because my first paragraph was focused on a completely different point (i.e. it barely matters what champion you pick for a given role). But the overall point of the second paragraph was that the most important aspects of team composition aren't champion roles but the three team capabilities I listed. It doesn't matter whether you push turrets via ranged AD poke, split pushing, bruiser bumrush, AoE death zones or whatever else, just as long as you have a way to do it that works.

I've played games where the enemy honestly outplayed us for 90% of the game (lost 2 lanes, kills way stacked against us, etc), but once team fights started we had a much better composition and just rolled them and got to free push. I guess it depends on a lot of things. If it's solo que, and they have gank happy heroes, that suck in team fights, and you have the aoe team fight lockdown, + aoe damage squad, your probably gonna win the game, since people don't know how to position properly.. I think everyones won the games from 15-25 kills behind cause mummy/galio/morgana/fiddle/rumble/annie, etc etc got a good ult on an overextended fed team.

You may be willing to take a step away from champion roles, but the next important step that a lot of people arent willing to make is that it is perfectly acceptable to abandon one game goal if the payoff is the ability to do another much better than the other team.

Sona can be pretty huge in teamfights with her ultimate (and the constant aura/heal etc spam, but you never notice those). Soraka with her ulti and instant silence to cancel channels is pretty strong, but there's not too much skill involved in pressing R so it's kinda not very spectacular. Alistar has quite the teamfight presence. Janna is really good for catching enemies with her speed and all the CC. Her ulti is extremely strong and can be anything from HUGE SUCCESS to YOU JUST LOST US THE GAME. So yeah, switch your support choices up a bit if you want to have more noticeable impact. Taric is rather underwhelming right now, his big selling point is the combination of ranged targeted stun + heal (and ok lvl 6 burst).
