The thing with increasing health means that you can go ahead and actually mess with the other person and risk your health a bit. In the grand scheme of things it doesnt mean all that much (over time you still will get low), but having 700 health vs 450 starting health is a BIG difference psychologically.

Also it's hard to increase reward for risks without increasing punishment for failing them. The goal is to make taking risks more attractive overall.
Increase kill gold: you're making people more likely to go for kills... but also less likely to let themselves be killed.
Lose gold on death: people are more likely to try and kill the carry... but the carry will play safer.

I've been using the Swain guide here at TL for the last little bit, and I have been running into a problem.

The build goes Doran's Shield, Boots, Catalyst, Lollerglass, Deathcap, something.

Only problem is, I get to the time when I am building my lollerglass, but I have 0 AP so the opponents just shove off the pitiful damage my crows are doing.
What do (I know I should probably be getting AP items before lolglass then, but which ones?)
Survival is winning, everything else is bullshit.

i don't know what a lollerglass is but swain does a ton of sustained AOE damage with no AP
so AP isn't really a priority on him
like, a single blasting wand or NLR is enough on him for the majority of the early game, where you should be focusing on survivability and mana pool to keep his ult on for a long time

I really don't think hourglass rush is a good swain build. Either make RoA from cata or go straight deathcap after cata then make banshee. RoA is rly good on swain cos it means he can'\ be so easily focused down.

As the others have said, Swain is not a burst caster. Think of him like a tanky-dps caster. Sort of. He doesn't need AP straight away to be scary so you go survivability with things like RoA and then Deathcap. His power comes from turning on his ult and not dying as while giving soft-CC from his AoE snare, enhanced damage+DoT in one and his mini-nuke.

Hmm, so Hourglass isn't something I should be getting that soon then.

Thanks, I will be trying Dsheilt > boots > cata > RoA > Deathcap > (Maybe hourglass here maybe something else idk yet, something to suit other team)

Shen's not really being banned that much anymore. The nerfs kind of made him so-so.

I don't really agree with this. It is true that higher Elo (it's a name, not an acronym) people are often more decisive, but I see time and time again people on 1800-2400 streams be overly aggressive and just feed really stupid deaths.

Solo queue play =/= ranked or competitive 5v5.

Watch some of those Dreamhack Qualifier matches again and see how overly aggressive the players are when there's $100 000 on the line.

Anyways, to answer your points, teams make far fewer stupid decisions in competitive matches than people do in solo queue.
Even not high ELO players play differently when they're in "serious" mode.
