That depends, which champions are you playing?
Generally for AD champs you wanna get a BF sword for ranged, and build it into infinity edge or bloodthirster then a last whisper for arpen, and mostly melee champs will get a brutalizer => youmuus (sometimes ranged gets this too). AP champs get catalyst first (usually), mana heavy champs will get tear of the goddess, then get rabadons deathcap. Boots are situational, a lot of the time people get merc tread for the CC duration reduction, but for AD champ people get berserker greaves and for AP they get sorc/ionian shoes. This is super general though, and is probably wrong since I am a bad player, but recommended items are probably OK to stick to until you learn more about each champ and look at guides and watch high elo streams and become sheep and copy their builds~

DX Well why wouldn't people want to make sure he is useless for the entire game? Feast is the scariest thing in LoL. Whenever a Cho dives you and you have half HP, it feels like you just moved your entire dragoon army into a field of spider mines without an observer.
But pardon me if I misunderstood your quote, do you mean your team mates thing he is the most useless piece of shit around and prevent you from doing anything and blame you whenever something goes wrong?

I'd add to that that mages usually don't get tears (only maybe anivia and karthus), and rush void staff followed by banshees veil right after deathcap. The only mage people that tend to get ionian boots are vlad and lux (who is supportish anyways), otherwise it's sorc 90% of the time.
But anyways build don't really matter if you are just starting, so many other things are more important.

Or it just means he just loses lanes with Cho now, because he's weak.

Trinity Force is almost never bad for anyone who autoattacks and uses skills often. It's like the only item that is really broken at the moment, usable on almost anyone and core on many top-tier heroes. Rabadon's deathcap is the best item for mages, almost everything else is champion-dependent.

Generally the people who bitch at your "noob items" have worse builds than just the recommended items from left to right.
Some of the better items are: - Merc Treads on tanky champs - Infinity Edge into Last Whisper on a couple of ranged autoattackers - Sorcerer's Shoes on casters - Wriggles on most junglers
There aren't very many items that are always a good choice.

No you dont want to rush deathcap on ryze. He would be one of the exceptions to the rush deathcap on mages rule. I believe it was pointed out there are exceptions to each of of these general buys.
Oh man it's funny to basically 1v5 a teamfight with cass by just spamming Q and W as they fight your allies / try chasing you and such. Allies don't even need to know how to play, just insane DoT and superb cleanup with E spam.
