    Comments

Jaina is largely considered to be weaker than Kael’thas and Li-Ming in the current meta and hasn’t seen competitive play in a while. However, when talented to be a glass cannon, Jaina still deals a large amount of damage and both her ultimates provide a lot of great CC. Of course, this leaves her incredibly vulnerable without any hard CC (other than Ring of Frost), shields, or the Ice Block at Level 20, but the damage numbers of her defensive build are notably lackluster.

Coming up with the damage numbers for Jaina was particularly intensive because of the variety in her talents. I won’t go into each individual number or each build, but for the Summon Water Elemental (R) builds the first damage number is immediately after Blizzard ends and the second damage number is after Water Elemental ends. It’s worth noting that this will cause some discrepancy as the Snow Crash talent at Level 16 creates 3 waves, meaning that the first number includes more Water Elemental auto-attacks. I tried my best to remove variability by not AAing with Jaina after casting all her skills.

When deciding on any skill rotation I had to take into consideration the bonus damage from Jaina’s trait, Frostbite, as well as the bonus damage from Level 16 Northern Exposure. Speaking of which, Jaina’s Level 20 Arcane Power and Frostbite add together when calculating damage. So if her Frostbite is talented at Level 7 for 65% bonus and Arcane Power’s 15% is activated, Jaina has 80% bonus damage. Also, this bonus 80% damage is calculated on her skills before the 25% vulnerability on opponents hit by Cone of Cold’s Northern Exposure (Level 16).

Onto her offensive builds: if Northern Exposure is chosen at Level 16, one should cast Blizzard (W) first because there is a delay before the first wave falls and that way you can get the most value out of the 25% vulnerability offered by Cone of Cold (E). Also, it is possible to hit Ring of Frost (R) during the 2 second vulnerability window if it is casted quickly enough after Cone of Cold (E). If Jaina talents into Wintermute at Level 20, she should wait for her Summon Water Elemental (R) to appear first as there is a wind-up time and it will not copy your skills during that time.

In the defensive builds I took into consideration the benefit of locking down an opponent, which is why Frostbolt (Q) comes before Cone of Cold (E) in the Defensive Ring of Frost build. In the Defensive Water Elemental build, the Water Elemental’s (R) attacks place Chill on targets so one should wait for it to attack first before casting Cone of Cold (E).

    Comments

The 3 builds I chose for Li-Ming’s combos are not necessarily talent builds that you will see in-game. However, I thought it would be interesting to see how well each “build” (Missile, Orb, Teleport) did in terms of damage. One thing to note, I did not choose Tal Rasha's Elements at Level 20 in order to simplify things.

  • Nova Mini-guide by Leolio
    + Show Spoiler +

Game plan: no risk, don't try to burst like the old Nova, remember you're useless in fights before level 7 (still participate) and you're OP at 16 with (double) Crippling shot. Don't abuse flanking, you can stay in the backline an outdps pretty much every hero in the game except a good Lunara, if you play well.
    • Level 1: all are good, but the range on pinning shot is the best (Longshot), and the speed boost when you're cloaked is useful too (Advanced Cloaking). Worst talent is the increase of the slow, and it's still quite nice TBH. The mana regen is nice too but a bit too underperforming IMO (but you feel more free to use your mana on waves or camps).
    • Level 4: all suck, the "less CD and less mana decoy" (Rapid projection) is better since you always have mana issues, but if you go lethal decoy (don't go lethal decoy) pick the "longer lasting decoy" (Holo Stability) as it'll output more damage obviously.
    • Level 7: One in the Chamber gives you a critical AA after each ability use. Remember to use an ability (even the decoy), do an attack, use an ability, do an attack... Now you have good sustained damage.
    • Level 10: Nuke of course. So much utility. If you're very good with Triple Tap AND if you go for the level 20 upgrade on Triple Tap, go for it. But nuke is way better, with a really low 60 secs CD (TT has 100 secs) and combo potential (Zag, ETC, Jaina, Zeratul, Tassadar, Johanna's stun...). And nuke has global range. Global range is always awesome.
    • Level 13: Double pinning shot (Double Tap), because now your combo has 1 more ability and you'll have more critical auto attacks.
    • Level 16: honestly, if you still have your 3 keeps by now, and are not too behind in levels, it's GG. Crippling shot, with 2 charges thanks to level 13. Now their tank will melt, and if they don't adapt to your pick (they usually don't notice) they won't even understand why they were fine until now and why they die instantly now.
    • Level 20: Never used the special cloak escape (Ghost Protocol, cool name) more than 1 or 2 times because to me it sucks and I loved bolt of the storm wayyyy more. Now I take the 2nd nuke, because I play "team friendly Nova" (to me nuke = utility and combo). If you take Rewind you'll have the friggin' longest combo ever. Probably too long, but it's a good choice too.

TBH I don't find Nova very much effective in QM anymore since you cannot burst the noobs (now it's Zeratul's job) unless you're really ahead in levels, or they really suck. But in HL, I don't even understand how she has 50% winrate on hotslogs, she feels like the most OP hero to me. I hope Blizzard don't touch her until my smurf is rank 1 too. ^^

    Comments

Thrall’s talents at Levels 7, 13, and 16 allow for a lot of options. Level 7 is a toss-up between Follow Through and Wind Shear, Level 13 between Grace of Air and Giant Killer, and Level 16 between Forked Lightning and Tempest Fury. Even though there’s a myriad of combination, for this write-up I decided to focus on Follow Through at Level 7 and Grace of Air at 13 for simplification.

Because of Follow Through and Thrall’s trait, Frostwolf Resilience, the two level 16 talents offer an interesting dichotomy. Whereas Follow Through procs after each skill usage, boosting the next AA by 40% damage, Frostwolf Resilience gains a stack each time a skill does damage, restoring 660 HP for every 5 stacks. It’s worth noting that in the Forked Lightning build that a 3rd possible Chain Lightning is possible soon after the full skill rotation (as it has a pretty low cooldown of 6 seconds). Although this does not take advantage of the 4 stacks leftover, because you only really need one more Frostwolf Resilience stack to heal another 660 HP, it does mean you still have 4 stacks left for the next Feral Spirit or Windfury to proc the heal.

However, if one wants to look at cooldown timers and number of Frostwolf stacks possible to compare levels of sustainability on Thrall’s HP, one would have to take into consideration other talents as well (namely Level 7’s Wind Shear). That could be another post on its own and wouldn’t be all that practical. It might tell you damage and sustain spikes based on how long a fight lasts and how many enemies are around but at that point it’s just numbers on paper. You would be better off playing Thrall’s different builds in-game to get a feel for the pros and cons of different builds and the sort of playstyle that works best for each.

    Comments

So I’ve realized after retrieving all the data for Valla’s combos that there are some things that could be changed for the better. For example, adding Valla’s Strafe (R) versus Rain of Vengeance (R), adding Level 10 versus Level 20 damage numbers, and addressing the unconventionality of upgrading Rain of Vengeance (R) at Level 20 versus talenting into Blink (1). For the sake of this post and for simplicity, I have consistently chosen Rain of Vengeance (R) and its Level 20 upgrade and decided to vary Valla’s other talents for her 3 popular builds (Q Build, W Build, AA Build).

It should be noted that the reason for such high damage numbers in the AA build is due to the many AA’s when measuring damage numbers. Also, Giant Killer assumes a relatively high HP for the target when the target is the Training Dummy (the bonus damage is 121, meaning the target has an HP pool of about 8000). The damage numbers for the AA-build were achieved by stopping Valla’s AA’s when Rain of Vengeance 4 waves completed.

Each of Valla’s builds has its own strengths and weaknesses. Admittedly, I am not a Valla player and have only played her sparingly. Roughly speaking, Q-Build is great for sustain and 1v1 combat. W-Build is good for damage in team fights and wave clear because of the AOE of Multishot (W). AA build is consistent, sustained damage, which is good for long fights.

    Devouring Maw Combo

    Demonstration

    Required Talents
    • Level 10: Devouring Maw

    Execution
    • R - Devouring Maw
    • E - Infested Drop
    • Q - Baneling Barrage

    Comments

Zagara’s Devouring Maw (R) is awesome for chaining with ally stuns but is also perfect for the AOE/splash damage of Zagara’s Baneling Barrage (Q) and Infested Drop (E). What’s great is that even though her ultimate has a long duration of 4 seconds, which can be hard to keep track of without practice, it has a visual indicator that helps with the timing of any follow-up. The three jaws of Devouring Maw (R) exhibit 3 “squeezes”, including the one that occurs when the jaws first close, before releasing its contents.

As the Zagara player, the optimal skill rotation is Infested Drop (E) first, as it has a small delay, followed by Baneling Barrage (Q). The timing for Infested Drop (E) is relatively straight-forward: as soon as Devouring Maw (R) visually shows the three jaws “relaxing” from the second “squeeze”, cast Infested Drop. The delay of E means that the impact should hit right as Devouring Maw (R) opens, meaning any enemy hero within has barely a window to avoid getting hit. Baneling Barrage (Q), on the other hand, is harder to combo perfectly as it has a travel time, meaning the timing will depend on Zagara’s distance from the target. Roughly speaking, if you keep the same distance as the cast range of Devouring Maw (R) (meaning you don’t move from where you cast your ultimate), you want to cast Baneling Barrage (Q) ASAP after Infested Drop (E).

Best Values for spending real money on the game for new players:

+ Show Spoiler +
One of the best values for spending real money is the Heroes of the Storm starter pack available at Amazon.com, Gamestop and other retailers.

It retails for $19.99, but is currently on sale for $11.48 on Amazon.com
  • Five Heroes:
    • Sonya – Warrior
    • Zeratul – Assassin
      • Ronin Zeratul Skin

    • Zagara – Specialist
    • Li Li – Support
    • Jaina – Assassin

  • Retail Exclusive Golden Tiger Mount

Also unless they fixed it in the last week, registering the Ronin Zeratul skin will unlock Zeratul too, meaning you can give or sell the plain Zeratul unlock key.

That plus the Raynor/Malfurion/Muradin Starter bundle for $4.99 gives you 8 solid heroes for $25 that I think are over all better than the collection you get from the Nexus Bundle at $39.99 which comes with:
  • Two 2k Heroes (Lili, E.T.C)
  • Two 4k Heroes (Sonya, Tassadar)
  • Two 7k Heroes (Zagara, Falstad)
  • Two 10k Heroes (Nova, Nazeebo)

Generally speaking I don't think stim packs are worth buying. You have to play an insane amount of time to earn the amount of gold equal to just buying a character you want. While it does help you level faster, that's gold you would get eventually anyway. That being said the included stim pack that comes with the Raynor/Malfurion/Muradin starter bundle does increase it's value some. Keep in mind that stim packs last for 7 calendar days from the time you buy them or earn them in game from hitting level 10 on your account so try to plan that when you have the time to take advantage of them.

[TRICK] All fountains shall burn - rewarding Azmodan strategy self.heroesofthestorm

* by Existor371

•All fountains shall burn mini guide

•video

tl;dr Check image above. Whole trick is explained on that picture.

Below you can find small wall of text about this trick.

The trick is pretty simple and probably can be done with other heroes too. Why "probably" is because only Azmodan can constantly damage building without having vision of it. And since every specialist tries to be annoying in specific area, Azmodan have another annoying strategy after his stacking Globes or his lazer... sniping fountains through walls!

Sniping healing fountains is pretty rewarding early game strategy because if you destroy them, enemy heroes won't be able to quickly heal back and will be forced to recall or go other lane (if you didn't snipe other fountains) , losing some time which you can use for pushing lane, collecting map objective collectibles (skulls, demons, dubloons, etc) and doing other stuff.

To do this trick you need 2 spells to snipe fountain: Globe of Annihilation (or Demon Warrior) to get vision for 1 second, and All shall burn lazer to destroy healing fountain. Sometimes you will need whole your arsenal to burn down fountain: demon warriors and general of Hell may help you to snipe fountains that you can't reach with safe method through walls.

Radius of "All shall burn" lazer is pretty big allowing you to snipe fountains through walls and keeping you in safe spot. All safe spots are marked with orange on the image above.

There are some maps where fountain is placed in safe (for fountain) spot, but you know... nobody can escape great strategist Azmodan. You can tank tower shots with your Demon Warriors (W) and General of hell (D), just create some warriors, spawn general with your trait and immediately start "All shall burn" lazer to destroy the fountain!

On some maps there are some fountains that can't be reached with this trick (i.e. bottom lane on Sky Temple and Blackheart's Bay). But on these two maps you can backdoor top lane fountains, it's risky but may be rewarding too. In these cases try to snipe fountains if you are sure that: you can go back, enemy heroes are all dead or busy with objective/teamfight or it's just worth it if you die.

Edit. After some playtesting I noticed that you can get some vision by just spawning Demon Warrior. Downside of spawning demon warrior against globe is no damage from globe to fountain (still it's very small and equal to one autoattack), but pre-lvl13 (Hedonism) using Demon Warrior is cheaper than Globe of Annihilation (40 mana Warrior and 60 mana Globe).

Still need to go thru and update some of these, and more will change with Medic patch.

I will go thru and start removing outdated guides after giving them about a week for the authors to update them.

This guide is already way outdated. A lot of the talent choices and ideas thrown around in this guide are just wrong.

"It should be noted that because all of my research on Kharazim was done on the PTR, there are a lot of things that may be subject to change over the next week as we see Kharazim on more maps/play-styles. I am confident this style of build/play is very good, just it may need some slight changes over the coming week."

Added JinyasTyrande's Towers of Doom Tips and Trivia

by JinyasTyrande
+ Show Spoiler +

Rundown:
I've seen a lot of people complain about this map recently. I still think this too soon to say whether or not the map is properly optimized, but I'll go ahead and say I like it, and the biggest reason people dislike is because they are not completely sure how to play around it.

I'll try and see if I can make a difference there.

Things as damage the enemy core
  • All towers belong to you - volley of Shots/Bullets/Pellets 6 damage to the enemy core.
  • Merc camps run past the captured towers (and into the killzone) to damage the core. They deal 1 damage to the enemies core per sucessful mercenary unit in the killzone.
  • Capture Altars
    • The more towers you have, the more damage altars will do (1 more per tower)

  • Boss Captured will deal 4 damage

Useful Tactics
  • The bottom lane is the most important lane
    • Why do you ask? Simply because there are more mercs down there.

If you can capture the tower down there and ensure the merc camps a clean runthrough, you got a free 3 extra damage to the enemy core (and a better grip on the merc camps). Though do keep an eye on the boss so you don't give a free 4 damage to your own core.

  • If possible, you will want a good pusher at the toplane to keep control of the area.

Preferably your map alignment would be: 1 top, 1 middle and 2 bottom with the last person roaming. This of course, is not always possible if you prefer to play Quick Match where the charm of the mode is utterly random compositions of teams.
  • Push gates in all lanes fast

Just so that your first merc camps aren't wasted on something you could've done fast, since the tower damage is negligible right now.

  • Early Ganks

The map is tiny and with the increased death timers as of the latest patch, use this to your advantage.

  • Maintain low health on enemy Belltowers.

It is incredibly difficult to play around low Belltowers as you are forced to make a decision. Do I let this tower die and recapture (THat's a lot of seconds you'll have to be prepared to return in) or do you defend this low tower and waste time running back and forth? Defending the almost dead tower is usually the bad choice. While you are wasting time defending, the enemy team is utilizing their extra free time to cap an extra of your towers, or take your mercenaries.

Once they got this tight a grip on your balls you can hardly shake off the hand without tearing something in the process.

Keeping towers low also gives you little bit of insurance? Had a teamfight and altars just spawned? Go grab that tower and just to make sure you take a tidbit less damage to your core. Keeping them low also makes it easier if you just won a teamfight and want a huge volley of bullets/pellets/Shots

  • Utilize the chaos:

If you're feeling confident for a fight: When the altars spawn (during the 30 seconds) you force a Belltower/Keep down. Make the enemy make a choice of whether they want a to contest you getting 1-2 extra Belltowers, or them securing maybe a single Altar before you can challenge them at the Belltowers.

  • The boss is not alway a good idea

The Headless Horseman deals A LOT of damage. He deals percentage damage and it chunks you HARD. I've had teams go in and wipe because they thought they could quickly focus him down. Be sure you have atleast 70% hp going into that cage - it's a better throwpit than the boss in Sky Temple. Be catious if your healer isn't there.

During downtime you should:
  • Pressure the boss if you have the chance and the HP to do so.

  • Capture towers, but most importantly capture the botlane tower (to secure merc camps) and try to make the mercs push through for possible core damage.

  • Ambush single laners and try to get an experience advantage.

Random information
  • Portal to the midle lane spawns/opens at 12 minutes.

  • In between the enemies core and Belltowers (Keeps) there is a killzone, marked by a line on the ground where the earth changes colour, which will damage you heavily if entered.

  • First altar spawn at 1:30 and respawn around 110 seconds after the last altar has been capped.

  • Sappers spawn at 2:00

  • Headless Horseman spawns at 5:00

  • Mule do repair the towers, though I'm uncetain howuseful this talent really is, as towers either are getting bursted by players or sappers and they'll usually die fast if ever attacked.

  • If 3 altars are up 1 tower can fire 2 bullets 3 times - in other words 1 tower can do 6 damage.

  • Mercenary Lord coupled with Sappers will 100-0 a Belltower (or very close).

Good Heroes for Towers of Doom:

Since there is a lot of fighting going both in lanes and on points littered with chokepoints and small alleyways heroes with a lot of sustain and zone control are the best to bring.
  • Zone Control - Heroes like
    • Kael'Thas, Jaina, Leoric, Tyrael, Zagara and Diablo

  • Sustain - Heroes like
    • Healing wise - Kharazim, Malfurion and Tassadar
    • Damage wise - Raynor, Hammer and Nazeebo

  • Good Pushers for top lane
    • Zagara, Sylvanas, Sonya or Murky.

  • Honorable mentions:
    • Abathur - can soak and pressure the lanes opposite of the altars to great extent.
    • Thrall/The Butcher - Great early game ganker
    • Nova - Great at picking off targets and getting away because of the corners as can help get quickly out of vision again.

I still dislike how there is his name and twitch channel in the picture with essentially Dreadnaughts information. Stotens pictures are nothing but a representation of some of the things Dreadnaught said (literally copied, sometimes) with his credentials slapped on them. I don't feel like we should be supporting that.

Really enjoy your hard work, but most of those builds are outdated.

For example, Tyrande Battle Momentum build was really good when her ultimate has 40s CD and hunters mark at 8s.
It allowed her to have impressing healing numbers. But now, after her nerf, this build isn't as effective and i wolud not recommend it.
Chen build is 1 year old, Gazlowe one is missing... etc.

wombtickler's 3900 MMR Gazlowe guide

Quickly wrote this up at work, sorry for any formatting errors.

Since the Gazlowe rework announcement I have read a lot of comments and a common opinion is that people don’t like his lazor and think it’s terrible. I couldn’t disagree more. Gazlowe is my 3rd most played hero and I have great success with him at the highest level in my region.

In my opinion the best build for high level play is a Lazor build as follows - http://www.heroesfire.com/hots/talent-calculator/gazlowe#pFOC

Allow me to explain a few key parts of the playstyle and talent choices. Break it down at lvl 1 is integral to the playstyle with 3x faster cooldowns from scrap. This talent turns you into a long range, high dmg, high cc machine. Later game, you must constantly put down turrets and immediately scrap them to keep pumping out lazors from a safe/strong position with almost no cooldown. With the lazor talents each blast does massive dmg, slows and casts very quickly.

I take first aid most of the time since I don’t use my turrets for much more than being wards and being scrap machines.

Be smart with casting lazor, don’t stand in the middle of a lane or teamfight and expect to charge it up. Use bushes, use your teammates, and be smart about it. If they can see you charging, simply aim it away from them and turn it back just before firing (mainly for laning phase). For whatever reason if it isn’t pointing at them they don’t care and stay in range.

Gravo bomb. Break it down means your ult doesn’t have a cooldown. If you are always cycling scrap from your turrets the cooldown is tiny. This means when you’re just walking around, you’re spawning turrets and destroying them. When you are in fountain, spawn your 2 turrets just outside the fountain wall and scrap them when leaving (you can’t pick up scrap inside), which leads to 2-3 more turrets to scrap if you aren’t immediately needed at a fight/objective. Feel free to use your grav bomb for pick offs, since you have no cooldown it's an amazing way to seal in a quick kill.

Teamfighting with lazor/grav bomb. Once your lazor slows them enemies you can pull off the following, devastating combo. (this won’t always be the correct way, as opportunities for ult combo can present themselves without it) Lazor their team, hopefully 3~ people. Destroy a previously set up turret – place your xplodium charge, wait .5~ seconds then grav bomb on top of it and charge up another lazor (the scrapped turret puts it off cd).

What does this do? Late game, you hit hopefully 3 or more targets for close to 1000 dmg (can’t check numbers right now) and slow them all. You then xplodium charge/grav bomb combo the slowed targets who cannot escape the area. They are all stunned and hurting, once the stun is ending they get hit by another huge lazor and are slowed again.

The dmg and disruption of a properly played Gazlowe is immense. By no means is he top tier or anything, but in the right hands he is pretty damn useful. I hope this might help change the view of his lazor.

He still needs work, that’s for sure.

If you want some replays let me know and I’ll find a few.

Hotkey setup: Normal Cast using shift by CyminX

I wanted to re-create my old LoL hotkeys: Quick Cast on QWER, and normal cast on Shift+QWER. Once you get used to it, the setup just kinda winds up being a better version of quick cast on release.

New hotkey preferences are awesome, but it doesn't let you bind any modifier keys (Shift, Control, Alt) to your basic QWER hotkeys through the UI. In order to get Normal cast on Shift+QWER, you need to manually edit a hotkeys file.

How To:
  1. From the Hotkeys menu, create a new Hotkeys profile. Name it and save it

  2. Next to the dropdown menu of profiles to choose from, there's a folder icon. Click it.

  3. Open the Hotkey file that you named in Notepad (or other text editor)

  4. copy and paste this file! into it

  5. Save the Hotkey file

  6. Load the Hotkey file in the Hots hotkey menu, and save.

What the settings do is:
  1. Puts normal cast for talents and abilites on Shift+KEY

  2. Puts quick cast for talents and abilities on KEY

  3. Changes the Queue modifier (normally Shift) to Control

  4. Unbinds Control Groups...though I haven't actually figured out what this is used for (TLV still work)

  5. Everything else is normally defaulted

Interesting Q build. I didn't really think 10% would be enough but it does increase the entire radius, not just the length.
Still, I find the choice for Dark Bargain very strange. They state it does the same as Healthstone but permanently and then forget the fact it adds 15 seconds to your respawn timer. That is a lot of extra time.

Now if they have a lot of burst you'll go for the spell shield talent but even heavy AA damage with some CC can just kill you, not to mention ambushes/ganks or simply when you lose a teamfight. With Healthstone you can get the same 25% you need when you need it (60 second cooldown should be short enough for every teamfight) without penalty. If you get attacked constantly and thinking you need the extra health permanently, the chances of dying are still likely. If Healthstone can't save you, neither can Dark Bargain but atleast Healthstone doesn't have a penalty.

Now, I don't know if Gul'Dan's W bases the heal amount on a % of your maximum health though.
If it does, Dark Bargain will increase your W efficiency (and by extension mana efficiency) by 25% which is decent but 15% seconds is a lot. At level 13 that is about a third of your respawn timer? Is that really worth it compared to Healthstone?

I think that many of the pro guides are colored by pro level play. If you have a tank and healer you trust to peel and heal consistently then having 25% extra health is better than a health stone because they have more time to heal or peel for you. If you die you trust your team to wait to engage until you are back and you stick together so you are significantly less likely to die from being split up. These are all less likely to be the case in the average hero league with strangers, and even less so the lower rank you are playing at where it's understandable to want to trust in your healthstone rather than a team mate

More Ability Timing Tricks
  • Face Melt cancels the channeling of Storm, Earth, Fire
  • Punisher Stomp Waving with Sylv
  • Li-Ming can Teleport to cancel basicattacks and some abilities tracking her, be they from towers, forts, mercs like ravens, heroes like Falstad, minions, you name it. This is very helpful in allowing her to solo siege camps and drain tower ammo, in particular.
  • Lunara can Leaping Strike to cancel Bone Prison
  • Illidan Powerslide Dive – time the Dive such that ETC is Powersliding during your Dive
  • Mounting Teleport - Z right after
  • Blink Sundering – this restarts the Sundering from the location of your Bolt
  • Death Chain Bombing – One of the ways I learned to master Kael'thas on my journey to ~1000 games was to cast Living Bomb on nearly dead enemies who are near their teammates; that way, the Chain Bomb spreads immediately, effectively giving you a [2 for 1 in this case] and you maximize value out of Sun King's Fury's spreading bonus damage. As an additional tip, it is actually part of the play to keep walking through the Blizzard at the end because that makes fleeing enemies more likely to try and turn around to finish you (although you have to be calculated or else maybe they will) – effectively leading to more chaotic fire spreading.

Heroes of the Storm Laning Guide by aeshar:

I've noticed that I've recently spend some time to explain in depth how laning works in HotS compare to other moba, and I think it could be useful if I put all those advices on the same place.

Disclaimer: sorry, I'm not a native English speaker, feel free to report my mistakes.
What is the Laning Phase?
So first of all, what is the laning phase. It's the early game. The whole goal is to be the first to hit 10 to get heroic (ultimate ability). Having heroic will allow you to have a favorable fight while your opponent are still level 9 (so group up when you hit 10 before them and engage, you have the advantage, or stay safe if your team is late, they will want to engage you). You will get 10 faster, by getting more XP, and by denying XP to your opponents. The generic way to do it is to always have at least 1 hero at XP range on every lane for every minions. Some Asian pro-players sometime prefer to group up to push as 4-5 even at level 8 to get XP from structure, but it's not a common strategy, I will not expend more on it.

One of the core design of HotS is that their is no money and XP is shared. Furthermore, you don't need to last hit, only being in XP range (about the same than vision range, even mounted) to get the shared XP. I will not say it's better compare to standard moba (it's a personal opinion) but it change completely the dynamic of the game. Because of that rotation are extremely important in heroes.

The implications are in fact really important. You can run a 1/3/1 or 2/2/1 or even 4/0/1 (the 4 man roaming between 2 lanes to get the XP on both) distribution of heroes (in 3 lanes map) because no-one will be spoiled (in term of XP or gold). You can have 1 heroes in each lane, and 2 waiting in bush to gank someone, or doing mercenaries.

Furthermore, the one who stay alone on his lane will change during a game. Past level 10 it's better to group up as 5, whereas before 10 (the laning phase) you should be more spread. If you are a hero with a global, before level 10 it's better to be with someone to be ready to switch lanes if someone else need help. After level 10, it's better if the hero with a global stay alone to be ready to group at anytime with the 4 other!

So I think you have understood that it's important to get the xp from the minions wave, but how do we actually do that?
Solo laner Overview
If you are the solo laner, your goal is to get XP. Nothing more. To get the XP, you have to stay alive, with enough life to not have to B. It's stupid to say it, but in fact it's really important. A good solo laner is a hero with great sustain and great poke. Thrall is a really good example because of his trait and his chain lighting. If you play thrall (and it's the same think for all solo laner), if you have vision on all enemy on the minimap, you can be a bit more aggressive if you don't take damage that you cannot heal yourself. If you are against zagara, you can poke her with your chain lighting while staying at max distance. Don't try to AA, you will lose some HP, and trading HP expose your more to gank. Wait that the minions die by themself, to clear the wave when they will come nearer your tower. Don't take risks. Remember, if you die you have fail your job. If you need to tap the healing well, you have use your joker and it will not be available for the next objective. If you need to back you may lose one wave of XP. Because of that trading HP is often bad. EDIT: I forgot to mention that nearly all map have a safer lane, and it's where the solo laner should be! EDIT: By stalling your wave, waiting to hit the enemy minions under your tower, your encourage your enemy to overextend and this can help your ganker to kill your opponent.
4/0/1 Group laning
If you are in a 4/0/1 distribution and you are in the 4 man, your goal is to clear the wave as fast as possible. The best map for that is Tomb of the spider queen. Since your goal is to clear the wave as fast as possible, don't stop to fight unless you kill one of the opponent really fast. At the beginning of the game, 1 kill give approximately the same amount of XP than 1 wave of minions while being much riskier. Often people group at the middle at the start because it's were the first wave will come first. The goal is not to get a kill, but to clear the wave faster than your opponent so your 4 man will have some advance.
1/1/1 +2 Roaming Comp
If you are in a 1/1/1 + 2 roamer comp, and you are the roamer, your goal is to inspire fear to the enemy! If you are nova, the enemy solo lanner should not be allowed to soak XP while constantly risking his life. If you do your job correctly, your solo laner should feel safe, while you dictate how the enemies need to rotate!

General Tips
  • Being extra-safe: If you don't need to push and you fear to be ganked stay on your mount behind your minions wave (near your gate) or inside bushes without attacking. You will still get the XP, even if it take ages for the wave to die, but you will drastically reduce your change of being caught by a gank. Better to be safe than sorry!
  • Dual laning: When you have nearly clear the lane (~2 minions have ~15% life), start channeling your mount. Your minions will finish the job while you go away giving you ~2-3s of advance!
  • Pushing and draining tower ammo: Kill first the archer then the mage. They have more DPS (especially the archer) and less life than the melee minions.
  • Building big minions wave: Kill archer and mage, but keep the enemy melee minion alive. Since they have a lot of life, this will slow your wave, so your next wave will catch up with the previous one.
  • Denying XP while enemies are away from your lane: attack first the archers but don't last hit them (put them at ~10% life), so they will kill you melee minions. If your melees are killed without an enemy at XP range, you've done your job! By pre-hitting the archers, it will be really fast to clear the wave if you need to leave.
  • Denying XP while one enemy try to be in your lane (especially against 1 viking as illidan): to do that you need to be sure you know where all enemy are at all time. If you die for that it's not useful. Obviously, you also need to have an extremely favorable matchup like illidan vs eric or baelog. The idea is really simple: you position yourself between the enemy minions and the enemy tower. Then as explain previously, you attack the enemy archers without killing them. Obviously it's really risky, but the idea is that you will force your opponent to stay outside of XP range while your minions dies.
  • Denying XP while enemies are really far away from your lane: see above how to push and drain tower ammunition. If your minions dies because of enemy towers, it's the same thing than if they die because of your minions. In both case if your enemies are not there to soak XP, you will deny it!
  • Don't loose XP: Don't let a minion wave dying on your tower, especially if it's a big wave. Be smart on your rotation, don't chase too much, otherwise, your enemy will be able to deny your XP
  • Laning while being in a winning matchup: it is important to start understanding your matchups in order to know which lanes you should win. For example, say you are Thrall and laning vs. a Valla. You should position yourself (assuming you can see other enemies on the mini-map) in an aggressive position and continually chain lightning Valla (and without being in your minions to not risk to be hit by her multi-shot). This may allow you to deny experience to the enemy team because to get into exp range Valla has to risk being caught by your wolves root and potentially dying. If the enemy team doesn't have a great solo laner, you should punish them for it and not just passively get XP in your lane.

I hope all that wall of text will help you! See you in the nexus.

They need to just make Vorpal baseline at this point, it would win at lvl 13 and it's at lvl 1...

The new Zeratul is really cool but his talent diversity is terrible, got to be among the worst in the game now. I hope Rewind doesn't get removed one day but it's hard to see how you can compete with it.

This is an old video from 2015 so the build and meta comments aren't valid, but it's still a good guide on proper ranged assassin positioning

Markwerf wrote up a guide a while back that still applies for the most part. Here is a paraphrased version for the current meta:

Many compositions are possible but the general solid composition that you see played most in almost every high level game is the following:
  • 1 tank
  • 1 full support
  • 1 ranged damage
  • 1 melee assassin/tank/off tank/bruiser
  • 1 other

Basically it comes down to having at least 2 front liners, 1 of them a tank with the other often more damage/cc focused and then a healer and ranged damage to help out with the last spot being anything. Naturally you can find exceptions to this composition, but this is the standard.

Draft towards this composition as well as possible, this means it's helpful to fill out the (near) mandatory roles like a tank and full support in time so the last player isn't forced into a narrow selection. After all this player may be terrible at this role, refuse or not even realize he has to draft it so check what he intends to do before you pick.

One very common 'mistake' in hero league is to overdraft ranged damage. The traditional 'carry' role from other MOBA's is extremely popular and usually over drafted and prioritized too highly. In recent high level pro games for example there was almost no game where 3 ranged damage heroes were drafted. Don't draft this role too much, it really limits your choices. Three ranged dps, 1 tank, 1 healer is tough to win with, and even taking the second ranged dps makes some teams hardly work anymore (like abathur for example).

Often in hero league the players think 1 tank, 1 support and the rest can be anything is good. Picking an off-support or off-tank/bruiser can help make a balanced comp that you can't always count on random team mates to do.

Besides composition there are a few other qualities you want to keep in check and often want to balance on your team:
  • waveclear. Getting xp and keeping lanes from being pushed is always helpful though it depends on the map, three lane maps need more than two lane for example, and some objectives can be dealt with by waveclear (tomb of the spider queen/infernal shrines for example). Solo supports are usually mediocre at best at this so you want to make sure to get enough with the other roles.
  • solo laners. Almost no matter the map you need 1 or 2 heroes that can solo well to make sure to keep presence in every lane early. Later in the game there are often situations where you want 1 hero to split off to quickly depush a lane and get some experience. These heroes ideally have some sort of escape and decent waveclear.
  • ganking/initiation. Having some form of ganking or initation/chase tools within your team is great, this can punish heroes for straying off alone where they might otherwise retreat too easily. A common mistake however is to overdraft this, a team with only ganking heroes tends to lack in waveclear or solo heroes.
  • stun/cc. Closely related to the previous point, some sort of stun is often mandatory especially as there are many channeled abilities you want to interrupt and you want to be able to punish heroes for getting too deep.
  • mercing. This is very map dependant but it's often great to have a hero that can merc well.

Hey, I have an up-to-date guide for every warrior except Zarya and Cho. Some of them are linked and some of them aren't, the complete list is here.

Zarya should be out within the next two weeks, so it'll just be Cho missing. Will post again when I get that up.

Zeratul Seeker in the Dark/Might of the Nerazim combo tutorials:

Talent Tree
  • 1. Move Unseen
  • 4. Psionic Strength
  • 7. Seeker in the Dark
  • 10. Might of the Nerazim
  • 13. Mending Strikes
  • 16. Sentenced to Death
  • 20. Twilight Falls

All combos are at level 20:
  • W-W-A-Q-E-Vp-A-R-W-W-A-Q-A (4506 damage)

Initiate with W-W, Attack and use Cleave then blink away. Use vorpal blade to attack once again then use your copied blink to move to a position where you can easily target your 2nd singularity. Follow your prey, and deal full damage with A-Q-A. I use this combo when you need high mobility because there are lots of CC on enemy team or there are lots of enemies interrupting your singularity.

  • W-W-A-Q-R-W-W-A-Q-A (4286 damage)

This combo uses two cleaves right after going in with W-W. (Use blink to position yourself before you aim your singularity) After double Q'ing, immediately put your 2nd singularity so you can follow your prey. Finish with A-Q-A, use vorpal blade whenever you want. You may miss your cleaves if the enemy uses a mobility skill so you don't want to use Q-R-Q to burst damage. Take your time and chase your opponent, you are always superior in mobility terms. Use this combo to erase weak dealers that are out of their support's care range.

  • W-W-A-E-Vp-A-Q-R-W-W-A-Q-A (4770 damage)

With the first combo, you might fail to assassinate tanky guys like Greymane, Ragnaros, etc. So this time I tried to use my attacks as much as possible to stack Psionic Strength before initiating the full combo, and imitate Q instead of E. It resulted a ~300 damage increase, and was able to deal with melee bruisers. The butcher is a little bit more tanky than the guys above so you might need some extra basic attacks.

Greymane tip:

Basically what happens is that SonicLeBeast is intentionally fading away from Guldan to increase the travel distance of "Go for the thorat", which increases the duration of the "Unstoppable" effect (yes gftt has that), which then allows him to avoid the slow from the fort shot.

Medivh Video guide by Fan; updated 4/12/18

Genji Content (pre-nerfs coming next week):
  • Nubkek's Road to Grand Masters game play video
  • Genji Video Guide by ANZ HGC Player Doubt
  • Silver level Genji Coaching with Tempo Storm Kala
  • Diamond level Genji Coaching with Tempo Storm Kala

General Hero League Q&A with master/GM genji player ThatDoomedStudent
  • Genji is classified as hard difficulty to play, do you agree?

Most definitely. He is very mechanically intensive, and although some may think he is easy because he has many escapes, this only seems true but isn't the reality. In order to provide value for the team such that it helps the team win, Genji has to constantly take many risks throughout the game and make full use of all his mobility to be as aggressive as possible in order to be effective.

He is a powerful hero despite being at this time at his weakest point. His low WR shows most people cannot play him to his minimal effectiveness.

  • When do you prioritizing drafting Genji and on what maps?

Genji can work on almost every map. His job is to roam, gank, and finish low health targets which are things that are important on every map.

Braxis is probably his best map, it's a map where he can gank the solo lane and provide lots of early game value on a map where early game is so important. He can also travel to different lanes quite quickly and bonus for being able to cheese the boss.

Genji is technically a ranged assassin but in practice is essentially a melee assassin and plays exactly like one. So when drafting he should be considered a melee assassin when considering what assassins to draft.

  • What heroes do you draft to counter a Genji pick?

Genji has no specific hard counters, but some heroes have abilities that can screw him up. Malfurion roots and Twilight Dream during a Genji engage can hurt him pretty badly, as can a Stukov root/silence combo. Beyond the meta supports, BW polymorph and Emerald Wind can also be a pain, as can Uther's reliable stuns.

I think the most dangerous tank for Genji is probably Garrosh who has taunt, displacement, and stuns to take care of him. Diablo's point and click can be effective as well, as can Varian.

  • Are there any particular hero synergies to complement a Genji pick?

Abathur with Genji is disgusting. A hatted Genji does everything normal Genji does but better as he gets shields and more damage coming out of him. A cloned Genji also provides a second powerful finisher whenever needed.

Uther Dshield into Dragonblade is also a classic synergistic combo.

  • Is Genji an early, mid or late-game hero, and where are the significant power spikes

As a finisher Genji is good throughout the entire game, but he can provide tons of early game value through ganks and is probably unrivaled in his ability to do so. Although he is still strong in the late game, he has less relative power compared to other heroes who are geared towards the late game.

  • Is there a particular build you would recommend to someone wanting to learn the basics of Genji?

I'd recommend full E build with X-Strike for someone looking to learn. Shingan requires great micro to get value off, and although going "full anime" with Flow like Water at 13 and getting multiple E resets is also hard, it's easier to get value from that talen than with Shingan until the player gets used to hitting 3x Shuriken.

Dragonblade also requires very good judgement of knowing when to use it and the resets are also mechanically demanding, so Dragonblade should be taken after some familiarity with the here has been established.

  • Is there a high skill cap build you favor to optimize Genji's performance and create flashy plays?

Genji has 3 builds - Q build, full E build, and the "Tempo Storm" build which is just E build with Shingan and Final Cut. I personally almost always go E build and sometimes the TS build depending on the situation. You can do many flashy plays with E build like going full anime with E resets. Both of his 13 E and Q talents require good micro and are high skill cap.

Dragonblade is the cooler flashier ult but since its nerf X-strike is perfectly valid option if they have ways to shut you down if you DB.

  • Which of Genji's heroics do you favor?

Dragonblade because I'm a reset addict. But as I said above X-Strike is a practical safer option these days, although maybe I should start always going DB just out of principle.

  • Do you think Genji needs further tuning to balance the hero, or has the hero been reworked too much?

I have no idea how Genji is going to turn out after the ptr changes. I played him in one game and he feels terrible, the reduced E range screws with me since I'm so used to how it is now. Also no resets until 20 with DB makes me sad.

I think the change was inevitable since many people despise the hero and he can be very oppressive even though he is ineffective at most levels of play. I used to think he was oppressive too but I've played him so much that now I do not feel "oppressed" even when I play against some of the best Genji players in my region, but that's just me. I suppose we have to wait and see how the changes on ptr affect him when they go live.

DOUBT'S MAIEV GUIDE and game play video
+ Show Spoiler +

-OVERVIEW-

Maiev's one of my favorite heroes to be added to HotS in recent months. Having a viable melee assassin for the 4-man feels very nice as they're some of my favorite heroes. Maiev is a hero with a kit based around flashy 1v9s and playmaking. She excels at punishing out-of-position opponents and carrying teamfights with her wardens cage, multi-tethers and Q resets. She also has decent wave and camp clear and is difficult for the enemy to pick off due to her high mobility and juke potential so there's always something proactive you can do without needing a real team to follow-up on her.
-DRAFT-
Maiev is so strong she can really be picked anywhere right now and still do well. But she excells vs targets with low mobility as they're easy to dive, tether and kill. To really carry a teamfight she's paired well with some kind of aoe damage or ult like malf or diablo or a support such as rehgar to give her the survivability to kill the enemy team by herself with Q resets. She's countered by some tanks like jo quite effectively as blinds are really annoying for her to deal with but not insurmountable. Maiev doesn't really have any bad maps but I'd say her best one was Tomb of the Spider Queen.

-TALENTS-

1) Naisha's Memento
It's a lot of extra damage, synergises with your 16 and is fairly easy to recharge when you want to be proccing it anyway. The other options are a hard-to-stack quest and a talent that doesn't do as much. Since this build revolves around doing a lot of damage with auto attacks this talent does the job beautifully.
4) Blade Dance
The PVE clear and guaranteed extra damage especially once you get your 16 is too good to give up in comparison to the risk/reward of Pin Down. The best Maiev players don't take Pin Down so neither should we.
7) Elune's Wrath
More damage if you hit at least 2 people. Generally it will get more value than Bonds of Corruption but the armor reduction is strong and sometimes works if you can always get the pull on tether.
10) Warden's Cage or Containment Disc
Warden's Cage will be the pick 90% of the time but sometimes containment disc works when there's a crucial hero to isolate out of the team fight and cage just doesn't look like it will get value - e.g vs a heavily mobile enemy team or perhaps an aba comp.
13) Bladed Armor
Just way easier to guarantee then the others. You should be able to keep up permanent armor in a team fight meaning your 16 is constantly online. The other talents are just less reliable.
16) Armored Assault
This synergises beautifully with your 13, 1 and 4 and adds a heap more damage. The other talents are less reliable and worse damage.
[b] 20) Shadow Orb: Huntress
This is the talent with the most synergy with auto attacks and physical damage, it also helps you kite and chase and get value on tethers and even on top of all of that it's the easiest to recharge.

-GAMEPLAY-
Macro
Maiev's camp and wave-clear is very good. She can clear fast past 4 and clear camps fairly easily as well. She's very safe in lane so can sometimes push quite far out.
Micro
The most important thing on Maiev as with all melee assassin's is not letting yourself get insta-burst. As you will often be engaging non-laterally you want to look ahead of time and see what you need to pay special attention to dodge with your trait and also make sure your team are in position. It's also cruicial in team fights to hit the Q reset. If your Q doesn't reset your damage is drastically reduced so make sure to practice the Q hitbox as it's quite different from other skillshots in the game.

-CONCLUSION-
Maiev is a great hero to pick up for people who like divey melee assassins. She also has a lot of carry potential so is a great choice for hero league once you get good at her. Focus on keeping your deaths low as a sign you're doing well on her and understanding your limits. Enjoy.
