I wanna play Lothar. Warcraft 2 Heroes are way more badass then Warcraft 3 ones apart from Jaina and Sylvanas pre death.

It's just nice to pick whatever hero you want, go to game with almost instant queue and then play a game thats not going to drag on forever. Not to mention that playing with Blizzard heroes is pretty awesome and support heroes aren't mostly just food late game.

Tried to play couple games of DotA but heroes just feel sluggish now and I tend to get bored before the game ends. I guess this initital attraction might wear off and I end up back in DotA.

tl;dr HotS ruined DotA for me.

It's the opposite for me. If hots was my first moba, I think I'd enjoy it a lot more.

Look, as a WoW player you have huge vulnerabilities when it comes to shit games so let's keep the trashtalk out of here.

On a more serious note, a friend of mine actually got into hots and didn't want it. I started playing and I have to say: I'm somewhat de-hyped. I can not even really explain why. The game is fun and all but I don't have that "thing" I got from SC and other games.

I got a feeling that it is about the maps though. The heroes definitely feel fun, but the maps, after a few matches, are getting boring quite fast.

I agree, although there are like 8 different maps or something all the map objectives are just copy-pasted of "collect X amount of Y to get a power boost in your favor and push" -esque eerily similar to WoW's grindy "go kill X amount of boars and collect Y amount of boar butts to get this reward". Except their newest map (that sand-theme in the sky map) where you have to hold the contested areas so their laser towers can blast down the enemy is not bad, better than the rest of the maps .
But in general Blizzard's letting WoW's MMO grind fest design flaws flow into their other games which is not a good thing.

This is the first time I'm seeing that comparison.

There are 5 maps right now: Dragon Shire, Cursed Hollow, Haunted Mines, Garden of Terror, and Blackheart's Bay.

The objectives do require you to gather X to do Y (e.g. obtain 10 Doubloons on Blackheart's Bay to fire the cannons), but the point of them is double. They help one team push, and they also force fights. Some of them are better designed than others though. Blackheart's Bay actually allows you to bypass pushing to an extent because it can destroy entire Forts for you.

Cursed Hollow on the other hand forces teamfights quite nicely, and the Curse you get from three Tributes helps a lot in pushing, but isn't too strong. In higher levels, teams have to properly balance getting Tributes and Mercenary Camps (especially the Boss) to really succeed. Haunted Mines is pretty awful though. Especially if you're solo-queueing. That map depends so much on entire team movement that it can be really bad in pubs.

Overall, the real fun of HotS lies in playing as a 5-man stack. I've made a team with friends, and we now play as 5 a lot, and it's really fun and rewarding. I'm loving the game a lot for it, and I do think it has a whole lot of potential. I'm looking forward to the Closed Beta, with (hopefully) the two new maps, and the Ranked Ladder.

I don't quite get the comparison of the HotS maps to grinding in WoW. Except in some rare instances, grinding in WoW basically occurs in a vacuum. You're not killing 20 murlocs for any purpose other than finishing a quest -- which is to say that you're killing them for no purpose at all. Killing neutrals and collecting mechanics in HotS obviously occurs in much different circumstances. And I'm not entirely sure why some people don't like the addition of mechanics to the HotS maps. The added complexity makes for better gameplay and more diverse strategy than in traditional MOBAs like LoL or DOTA.

It actually makes for far less diverse strategy by forcing the teams do play the blizzard-approved objectives as opposed to actually having variety

I strongly disagree with this. With the notable exception of Haunted Mines, the maps are open to a variety of asymmetric strategies.

I disagree with this immensely. Garden was a horrible, horrible map at the onset because the terror was completely worthless. So it was just 5 man fights with zero push taking forever. It was horrible to play.

It is supposed to be easy to understand what the objective is. And even if you camouflage it with 100 layers of things to do. It will always be a mix of collect, escort, control, kill etc.
So making it complex would go against the design idea behind Heroes. And Dota style games didn't have complex objectives before, which was part of why they had such a success and gained alot of players from the MMO scene. Actually Heroes adds complexity to the genre.

It is not even bad design in WoW, since that is a MMO or in other words a grinding simulator. Before MMOs didn't even had quests like this and you made them yourself. Like collect 3000 items and then move into a tougher region. And I always found it silly to make an epic story line where you are the hero and you see 300 other people doing the same quest being the hero. So I like the you are just an adventurer and get silly quests approach.

I wish not every of their games would be made to be played in between though. But simplicity and a short match duration are no game flaws, as much as you can dislike those things.

They said at Blizzcon they used to have more complex mechanics but they removed complexity because it became less fun the harder the objectives were to complete. And I can understand that. I don't want to play a MOBA to complete a ton of PvE objectives. But the gathering and control objectives are simple and promote team fights in concentrated areas.

I think Blizzard has hit a pretty good balance of the PvE and PvP elements in HotS. You ignore either at your peril. I'm guessing that there may need to be some tweaking to accommodate the professional scene as competition evolves, but at least in solo queue, there are a lot of ways to put pressure on the enemy team and win.

Blame Hots heroes, and no items.

You always have objectives on Dota-like games. It's a tower, or the rosh, or a kill on the guy that is close to the blink dagger, delay that Tidehunter level 6, or the other guy that is a time bomb. Predicting ganks, pushing and ganking has a really big amount of strategy. Add then the skill and item build. It is tough, much more reliant on the match-up.

You have to answer the question "What do you want/have to do?" more times in dota, and the "correct" answer varies much more.

Oddly enough my biggest complaint is the current lack of snowball. So many times my team gets curbstomped early in the game but we win a late game objective and its like none of that mattered.

God what is with the DOTA avatars always coming in here comparing this game to DOTA. If I wanted to play DOTA I'd play DOTA. I don't find it fun. I do find HOTS fun.

Forgot to say: I don't think it's a problem having these kind of objectives in the game. It becomes a problem if they are just more important than everything thing else, when trying to do the objective is the best option you have most of the time.

I was just commenting on the "less diverse strategy thing". I think is a good discussion, If i just felt that HotS is uninteresting, or that Dota is just vastly superior, i wouldn't even come here. HotS is an interesting game.
