Illidan needs a change. Everyone wants to use the card but it is too slow, has low health, is BGH-able, the Flames of Azzinoth usually do not stick, Violet Teacher has lower mana cost, and so on.
I take a different approach to this card and focus on Illidan himself and therefore remove the Flame of Azzinoth dynamic. A main goal is to try and make him viable and also a minion worth playing by itself.
This is the idea I had:

The two choices:
Betrayer´s Thirst

Shadow Shield

Balance: Probably a bit op xD
Reasoning:
- Inspire: bc why not? But seriously, this can make for some amazing plays with hero power-synergistic cards like Coldarra Drake and also to give you the incentive to play him from turn 8 or later.
- Choose One - mechanic: bc of Malfurion being his brother and stuff. It gives you a LOT of flexibility.
- This card should be playable in aggro, midrange and even control decks because of its potential of cleaning boards of smaller minions (+2 Health Inspire), e.g. face hunter, all demon archetypes(exept maybe malygos lock), midrange druid, control warrior, midrange pally, oil rogue, control priest.
Merry Christmas everybody and plz discuss this idea, Illidan deserves to be in the meta!!!

Uhm. So I can play him for 6 mana, buff him, use hero power and stealth him. Next turn I attack, hero power and stealth him again. ??? Profit
Yeah even as a battlecry this card is really strong already, but a free stealth every single turn? Also the "choose one" mechanic is awesome and I wish more stuff would have it, but I'm pretty sure that Blizzard explicitly limited the "choose one" to Druid class cards :/
Sadly I cannot give much input as to what Illidan should rather be like because I have zero lore knowledge, to me the name "Illidan Stormrage" could as well read "John Doe". But having a playable Illidan card would be nice
Also merry christmas

A card like that would see play in all different types of decks, but only because it's Dr. Boom levels of strong, maybe stronger. Not to mention you'd have the choose one mechanic become acessible to non-Druid classes, which I don't see Blizzard doing anytime soon. Also having a choice mechanic nested within Inspire seems a bit off to me, if Blizzard did it next set I'd be cool with it, but currently there's nothing like that, so it lacks an air of authenticity, it doesn't follow the same templating Blizzard currently uses.

It's really not OP guys, pretty slow card. Seems fine as is though Blizzard would never redesign it.

If anything, I'd make it an Inspire (or Battlecry): A random enemy minion deals its attack damage to adjacent minions. Since he is the Betrayer, give him the effect of Betrayal. Easy peasy.
Since he has a body, he'd also be similar to Foe Reaper in ways. But unlike Foe Reaper, he won't have to damage himself to activate the cleave effect so his stats would have to be adjusted a bit to compensate.

I have been thinking of him as well, it is sad that such an iconic character is such a weak card. He could have been:
-Like doomguard, but maybe with even more stats. -Flame of azzinoths should have been demons -Ideally he should have had charge, thinking of his nature.

Coming from WarCraft, I'd really like to see the spells he could use there being passively in action in the card, e.g.:
Mana Burn: Could translate to cards that have deathrattles taking x damage every time Illidan attacks. Immolation: If the minions sourrunding Illidan are attacked, the attacker takes x damage. Evasion: x% chance to only take y% of the attacking damage. Metamorpohsis: Whenever a spell is casted on Illidan, he turns into 10/10 until the end of the round.

Too weak. Right now if you play it on a later turn you can combo it and get several additional units on the board. This will just make OTHER cards OP, essentially giving you charge on any big minion.

illidan is 400 dust . they would never re design vanilla cards .
