Reynad: "I think that EU and NA are exactly equal in terms of skill"

us Andrey "Reynad" Yanyuk
Team: Tempo Storm
Phase One: 5-0

3-1 Faramir
3-2 Arhwest
3-1 Ekop
3-2 Ostkaka
3-1 Zetalot

Alright, Reynad, I'm sure most of the Hearthstone community already knows a lot about you, but for those of us living under rocks, can you tell me a bit about yourself?

I'm a 22 year old streamer that plays hearthstone for a living. I'm best known for pioneering many popular decks that you see on ladder. I've also been working hard to push Hearthstone into the esports scene for a long time, using the money I make from streaming to salary the team Tempo Storm. We've consistently been the best performing team in the game since its inception

Tempo Storm is really kind of an experiment in both the esports and Hearthstone scene in that it's run by a player and not backed by a organization from a previous esport. Your players have been doing well, but how would you say it's been going from an organizational standpoint? If you could go back to Tempo Storm's inception, what piece of advance would you give yourself regarding the formation and managing of the team?

From an organizational standpoint it's been going very well since I hired Dan "Frodan" Chou as the team manager. I don't have a lot of time to handle a lot of managerial tasks that I should, and Dan has been immensely helpful in that regard. If I could give myself advice it would just be to hire him sooner and make more of an effort to reach out to sponsors. I'm happy to say that we just signed our first major sponsor in Twitch.tv so that lets me afford to fly our players out to more events. The hardest part is always establishing a relationship with sponsors and that takes time, but things are definitely looking up in that regard.

We have the best results in Hearthstone, we have the biggest fan base in Hearthstone, we have the highest overall views in Hearthstone, and both times we've organized an event (Lord of the Arena) we set viewership records for the game. All the pieces are there except the sponsors that make it all happen, and hopefully that gets resolved in the new year.

You're known as a pretty salty guy both on your stream and in statements to the general public. About how much of this is for show and how much would you say is your actual personality?

Nothing I say is ever for show, I'm very honest on social media and not a huge fan of euphemisms. When a question is asked of me, I answer it honestly. Sometimes this upsets people and they attribute the adjective "salty" to whatever I said. In my perspective though, it's never coming from a place of anger or spite or "saltiness". It's just my honest opinion of something or someone based on what I've seen. Most of the time I have nothing but nice things to say, but those statements don't make headlines or stir up non-existent drama.

You're known for butting heads against some other members of the community including Chakki, Admirable, Rdu, and Ekop. But by forming a team and being a big streamer, you've become a very public figure and your statements are often heavily scrutinized. Have you considered that it may be better for your career to keep some of these controversial opinions to yourself? And have you ever not liked someone in the community only to get to know them a bit more and then become friends?

Controversial opinions like what, specifically?

Like RDU "cheating" in Dreamhack for example.

20% of my 15,000 viewers in chat were asking me whether I thought he cheated at Dreamhack Summer. I know for a fact that he cheated in EU vs. China by being in a Skype call with a dozen teammates and screen sharing/talking through every play, because those very teammates told me they did. The sound proof headsets we used on the Dreamhack stage didn't work, and they had us play music through our cell phones so as not to hear the casters talk about each others' cards in real-time. On top of that the two times he was messaged by friends during a game was when Leeroy was drawn by his opponent, an important card to know of when you're making decision based on whether you're dead next turn or not. The third time he was messaged his friend literally told him what cards his opponent had in hand in Romanian.

So the question posed to me at the time was whether I thought RDU cheated or not. Given that I knew he had done it before, and there were plenty of chances to do it here, I said that I think it's more likely he did than that he didn't. I also think that given those facts, any rational person would think it was more likely he cheated than not. The difference is everyone else is so concerned about protecting their image that they bend their statements around that.

Do I know he cheated for sure? No, and that's why I never brought it up again after that. But when I was asked I answered honestly.

And have you ever not liked someone in the community only to get to know them a bit more and then become friends?

As for Admirable Ek0p and Chakki, all three of them publicly insulted me on social media before I knew who any of them were. Other streamers at the time were known for being entertaining, or bringing over huge fan bases from other games. I was the first Hearthstone streamer that became popular just for being good, and making some of the best decks in the game.

This ended up bringing a lot of hate and jealousy from players in the community that felt like they deserved more attention but weren't willing to work for it 13 hours a day like I was. They weren't going to hate on a streamer like Kripp or Trump because they are entertainers. A lot of the semi-pros, just like in any competitive endeavor, felt like they could do what I do better an. As a result they ended up insulting me on social media. Admirable, Ek0p, and Chakki all did this before I knew who they were. My philosophy has generally been to ingore them though, and rarely have I brought them up.

The only other time I've brought up something controversial was when I talked about Fight Night on Reddit. I said they were funded by a company with a shady history, but also made a lot of assumptions about who was in charge that ended up being incorrect. This angered a lot of people in the community. Lo and behold, a few months later they withheld payment from many of their players and employees. Some people moved to Germany for the opportunity and never saw a cent. The point of this is to say that when I say controversial things, it isn't from some childish place of spite or anger. My opinions are all based in fact and what I know to be true.

Well that's certainly more of an answer that I bargined for. Let's move on to a bit about Hearthstone. First of all, you're one of the only NA players to try to qualify on EU. You mentioned it was partly to avoid Tides but was there any other motivation? Also, in other esports there's concepts such as region locking. Do you think Hearthstone will need to implement these types of rules eventually?

If I held some of those opinions back I would certainly make fewer enemies, yes. There are plenty of things I refrain from saying because they serve no purpose other than to make someone angry. But when a question is asked of me by a fan, I'm going to answer them honestly. When somebody insults me on social media, I'm not going to give them a hug and a kiss on the cheek the next time we meet. I don't think it's fair to expect me to.

I think that EU and NA are exactly equal in terms of skill, and don't feel like region locking would hurt or benefit anyone. If they choose to go that route, sure, but I don't see how it would change much. I played EU for two reasons. First, as you mentioned, I would dodge my teammate Tides. Second, because the NA qualifiers happened first, I wanted to see how Tides did with the decks we made for him before I submitted them myself. He went 5-0, then I went 5-0 so I'm happy with the decision. We likely would have had to play against each other if we both played NA.

The decks certainly performed very well. What was the deck building process like and how did you finally settle on those decks?

It was a long process over the course of 4 days. Tides was winning WEC in China at the time and flying back sick, so it was just Reckful, Hyped, Gaara, and myself doing most of the testing.

Hunter was broken, and the format didn't have bans, so we needed to find a version favored in the mirror that could still beat other decks like priest. Reckful and I found that in the Hunter mirror, whoever played more early creatures won 100% of the time, so that got us playing Undertaker + Leper Gnome. Reckful had the idea of Sludge Belchers and we quickly realized that it's amazing in the mirror, and one of the best cards in the game. The only favorable way to interact with it in the entire game is Shadow Madness so we ended up playing 6x Sludge Belchers in our 3 decks. So Undertaker / Belcher Hunter was out of the way, but Reckful streamed in accidentally. He went like 20-1 on stream, which opened the usual can of worms where every other pro started playing it claiming they independently came up with it. That made our Hunter mirrors a lot harder since 50% of people had belchers at this point, but nothing could be done to improve the deck more at that point.

Miracle rogue had one of the best natural matchups against Hunter, as well as doing well against the Zombie Chow midrange decks people tried to counter Hunter with, so we started looking at that. I had the idea of putting belchers into it because the card is broken. While it doesn't immediately draw a card like Azure Drake, it gives you an extra turn which ends up getting you that draw anyway (like Sap). It also ended up breaking the mirror match open, and we assumed other players would gravitate towards Miracle too so that was important. Tides and hyped didn't like the belcher idea at first but we played mirrors and I was winning even without coin because of belcher. Hyped ended up suggesting I cut the 1 Gnomish Inventor for 1 Conceal and that was the deck.

I wanted to play Handlock since it beats every non-Hunter deck. Our other two decks were great against Hunter, so as long as we got past that Handlock should be able to sweep. It's a deck I've played longer than anyone alive as far as I know so rather than playing many games with it, I just played the exact 29 cards I knew I wanted + 1 big game hunter instead of the first Defender of Argus. Handlock ended up carrying for me personally, while Rogue carried for Tides.

In the course of testing I tried porting the Undertaker + Zombie Chow + Sludge Belcher package that Priest uses into other classes like Paladin and Warlock, but ultimately those decks were underpowered compared to the 3 decks we picked with broken mechanics.

Alright, that's a lot to talk about. You mention Reckful as a member of your testing team but we haven't seen much of him lately in the tournament scene. How active is he these days and does he plan to compete in tournaments in the near future?

Reckful streams when he's in the mood for playing Hearthstone, but it's more of a hobby than a job for him. He's one of the most talented players I've seen though and has a lot of good instincts. He doesn't play many tournaments simply because he's been quiet until recently and nobody's been inviting him. He's also the reason I played Oasis Snapjaw at Dreamhack Summer, and an awesome guy to prepare with when we can.

I also notice that Kitkatz was not one of the players present on your Blizzcon testing team. Whenever Kitkatz is mentioned on reddit, there's always a debate on whether he actually is in Tempo Storm. First, can you confirm once and for all, is Kitkatz on Tempo Storm and if so, to what extent?

Kitkatz was traveling at the time I believe, and not in our group calls when we did testing for Blizzcon. Kitkatz is on Tempo Storm, just not officially signed. He was a free agent and looking for good practice partners. We had spoken a bit at Dreamhack Summer and I figured it can't hurt to have him on board.

Kitkatz is a good player, but I know first-hand how hard it is to perform as well as you want to when you don't put the time into preparation. I see a lot of potential in him though if he were to put more time into tournaments, streaming, or testing with the team over ladder. I think he's #2 in NA right now for what it's worth. Yesterday he mentioned he went 11-1 at rank 2 and still couldn't hit rank 1. There's a huge gap there at the moment.

Kitkatz actually choose Europe too but did not decide to play the decks both you and Tides played. Unfortunately he did not qualify. Do you think this was a mistake on his part? Also, Kitkatz woke up too late for the tournament and actually missed his first match, starting the tournament off with a score of 0-1. This is actually the second time Kitkatz has missed one of these tournaments. How much did Tempo Storm chastise him for this?

Not too much. We all have different play styles and almost always end up going with different decks. I had to spend 2 hours on call with Tides trying to convince him to play our decks instead of Paladin control and the like. Sometimes being comfortable with a deck is more important than what deck you play, so I can't fault him for playing Warrior.

As for waking up late, it sucks but what can you do. Kitkatz isn't as invested into the game as the rest of us because he doesn't play it as a job. That's definitely not a bad thing, but it means that he'll miss the occasional event. Tides for example was reigning Deck Wars Champion and chose not to play in the second Finals this week. In the end I trust my players' judgment when it comes to knowing what's best for them, and understand that everyone leads busy lives outside of Hearthstone.

Through your 5-0 sweep of the EU qualifiers, you faced an incredibly stacked bracket. Were there any particularly exciting games or close matches you thought you were going to lose?

There were a lot of close games and a couple 3-2 series. At one point I had to play Handlock against ek0p's Hunter to win a series and I expected to lose that matchup, but I had a draw that could win if he didn't have the second Hunter's Mark. He ended up not getting it, and I won.

Now, in past recent competitions, you've been taking too long on some of your turns, which directly caused you to lose some games. Many twitch viewers even gave you the nickname "Ropenad". What was the cause of taking too long on your turns, being unfamiliar with plays or just nerves in general? And have you taken measures to make sure it doesn't happen in the future?

Just sleep deprivation mostly. When I play tournaments I have a habit of trying to consider every permutation of every possible play. On ladder, on the other hand I just weigh the 2-3 most obvious plays against each other and go with the one that makes the most sense. The tournament way of thinking takes too long when I'm tired once in a while. I also think that my games get more scrutiny than most players', and have only ever roped twice.

Alright final question. Besides yourself, can you give me a ranking of the top 5 players you expect to do well at the EU finals?

I don't recognize many of the EU players besides Thijs because I play on NA mostly. Any list I make would be randomly guessing. I like the thinking behind the decks Theude played for what it's worth, and I like my own chances as well.

Alright I don't want to keep you any longer do let's end it here. Do you have any final shout outs or sponsor plugs?

Shoutout to tempostorm.com, Twitch.tv for all the support, and of course to Blizzard for backing the pro Hearthstone scene with a massive $250,000 tournament. Hopefully the game continues to grow.

So Hector, can you introduce a bit about yourself to the Hearthstone community?

Yes sure, I'm a member of the Samsung Gaming eSports team. I was a Magic the Gathering, bridge and poker player in the past, either player and teacher. I'm 35, and I am vegan ^_^.

Wow, Samsung Gaming esports team? Does that have anything to do with the telecommunication company?

Yes, we are the eSports division of Samsung in Europe. This division was created some months ago in Spain.

Wow for such a known organization/sponsor, I'm surprised I haven't heard of you guys before. Do you have a website?

This is our website, currently only in Spanish. The Team was recently created, so we are still working in our website. We are planning to create teams for several games, the first one is Hearthstone. I'm one of the 3 members of the HS team. The other 2 members are Evangelion, who is also my brother, and Thalai, who won the Dreamhack Valencia. All we three played the EU qualifier, and reached high legend several months

How did you prepare for this tournament? Was it mostly through practice with your team or did you have special tactics planned?

Well, the truth is I played the decks I liked. I love combo and control, and I hate hunter ^_^. My only strategy, was to make 3 decent decks vs Hunter, which is the best deck.

That seems to be a common strategy among all the successful players.

But It was really hard to qualify... my miracle deck was the best of the 3 in this tournament. But Hunter is really strong right know, so it was really hard. All my opponents played hunter.

Do you regret at all picking the decks you picked for this tournament? For example, you didn't didn't pick Hunter and has some fairly not-too common picks

I think my warrior deck was weak.

What would you play instead if you got a do-over?

The most proffesional pick should be Hunter, maybe Handlock also. Handlock is a very strong deck, even in this hunter field. But I don't like those decks, so I picked warrior. But it was an slow deck, and didn't work too well.

Before we move onto hearthstone too fast, can you tell me a bit more about yourself? Do you have any particularly interesting hobbies or interests?

I work in software development. As I told you before I'm vegan. I usually go to gym and go running. I love video games and I love card games , so I love hearhtstone ^_^

What's your reason for being vegan? Is it for health reasons, animal cruelty reasons, or perhaps a combination?

Mainly health. I'm vegan for more than 8 years, first was kind of experiment with myself. But I felt great, so I remained vegan.

Do you have vegan superpowers?

Hehe. Well, I think my physical performance and my concentration improved, and now I almost never get ill.

So in a way, you're like Wolverine without the metal claws?

A bit taller and with less hair, but yes.

Compared to a lot of the other players who qualified who all added some weird cards to their decks, you brought mostly standard decks. Do you see that as a strength or weakness going into Stockholm?

Well, being too predictable may be a weakness. But I didn't play Hunter, so I think I wasn't predictable ^_^

Can you walk me through some of your matches during the qualifiers, especially any exciting or close ones?

I remember a round I lost because of my Ragnaros. He failed two 50% chances of winning. I was 1-2, only with my Miracle alive, and I faced Handlock. I won by real miracle, and his remaining deck was... of course Hunter.

I remember being at 2 life, he had 2 traps, I was drawing like hell with auctioneer, looking for farseers and Shadow Step. I healed several times and I finally won the game being in fatigue. It was totally crazy.

Man, I really wish that game was casted now

Yeah well, when I finished that round I went for a little walk because my heart reached its limit.

Do you think you'll try to be less predictable at the LAN finals? Perhaps try to metagame the rest of the competition a bit more?

I will try, the Europeans will be after the Leeeroy and Starving Buzzard nerf so it will be a new metagame. Every player will try to metagame the other players, will be interesting.

Who do you expect to do well besides yourself in the EU compeition? Can you give me some sort of ranking?

Probabbly Kolento, I have learned a lot watching his stream. Ranking... TheFallen - Kolento - LifeCoach - Reynad, in that order

Alright, thanks a lot for the interview. Do you have any final shout outs or plugs?

I hope this game keeps growing, and I hope the next card expansion comes this year. It will be great to add many new cards for metagame diversity.

Introduce yourself!

My name is Tugay and i'm 20 years old.The most people know me as Mryagut so. I'm from Germany and I play for Donors by Heart (DbH) right now.

Can you talk a little about your team and who they are? How is the dynamic on it?

In the team right now are Dandido, Modernleper and Kroba. It is not a big team and also not a known team. We also never played a Team tournament yet.

Did you expect to do so well? Walk us through your thoughts as you experienced the tournament.

My friend Dalok and me prepared pretty good for this tournament. So I was almost sure that I would be one of the top 14 players. But I wasnt so sure about it after I lost my first round. I got 3-0d because my enemy had 3 games in a row gadget double prep on turn 5. After the first round I focused much more and tried to make 0 misplays and it worked out in the end. Also its sad that I had to play against my friends Nabutte/Fake and also Lothar.

Will this be your first live event?

Yes it will be my first live event and I'm already nervous about it and also excited. But probably it will be a lot of fun.

Who are you most excited to meet? Who do you think are favorites in the tournament? Are you fearful of any players?

I'm most excited to meet Frezzar and Lifecoach. I don't really think any of the top 16 players are favorite in this tournament. Anybody could get far. That's why I am fearful of any player of the top 16.

What are you up to in your life right now? What are your goals for hearthstone as a semipro / pro player?

I currently go to school and also I play a lot of chess. I probably want to become a pro player because I have real good deck ideas.

What do you study in school? How good are you at Chess? Compare the two games.

I'm still going to high school and will be probably finishing with it next year. Chess is pretty much not RNG based. You have to learn a lot of theory, tactics and so on. In Hearthstone you just need to be good at making decks and knowing what the deck is really about.

What do your friends and parents think about Hearthstone, and that you're traveling to play a game?

My brother and some of my friends play Hearthstone too but they are pretty much still stuck at rank 15-20. My brother likes the art of the cards. My friends and parents couldn't first believe that i travel to just play a game. But they support me all the way.

Let's talk a bit about your choices for decks in the qualifier. Take us through the basic reasoning why you picked Warrior, Rogue, and Shaman.

First of all I picked Rogue because I'm really good at playing miracle. I reached rank 1 Legend several times with it and I was like 3 weeks rank 1 in season 4 with it. I also picked Warrior because it can almost win any match up and is good over all. And I picked Shaman because I wanted to counter Warriors and Handlocks with it.

Why not Hunter?

I didn't pick hunter because I thought it will get countered for sure.

Your Warrior deck was missing some common, less greedy cards like Zombie Chow, Slam, Cleave, etc. What are your thoughts behind your version of Warrior and did you feel it was successful?

My Warrior is more build to win in the control match ups than to win against more mid-range or aggro decks. But I also played 1 Whirlwind to make the hunter match up a bit better. I was pretty successful with my Warrior deck since I met a lot of control decks.

Your shaman is similar to the Xixo one, but you used Sludge Belcher over Harrsion Jones. Why did you make that change?

I think that belchers are much better against Hunter or Priest than Harrison. Its harder to break through the taunt. This Shaman deck does pretty good if u get some good early drops. But I don't think its favorite against Hunter how Xixo and Fake said. Mostly you don't have enough pressure against the Hunter to win till turn 6-7 and they also mostly buzzard unleash you until then. But its also a good deck that can win against everything overall.

How do you feel about the Hunter nerfs and what are your thoughts about how players will have to prepare post-nerf and what will you be doing to prepare?

I think that the Starving Buzzard nerf to 5 mana is way too much. It should be at least 4 mana or just better stats than 3/2. But I think the Leeroy nerf was ok since we won't only see Miracles and Handlocks with Leeroy in tours anymore.

The most people will try to replace buzzard with Loot Hoarder, Gnomish Inventor, Acolyte of Pain. I will try to make decks good without those 2 cards.

Beisdes yourself who would you consider the best players you expect to od well in Sweden?

That's a hard question. I think it really can be anyone but I think Lifecoach should do well in Sweden.

Any shoutouts or last words?

Shoutouts to Dalok who helped me with my decks and my teammates Dandido, Modernleper and Kroba.

Hi Thijs, how are you doing this fine September day?

I'm doing good. September is a busy month for me, started my internship and a lot of cool tournaments to play

Oh cool, what does your internship involve?

My internship is cool. I'm doing business economics. I'm 20 years old. I'm in the 3rd year now.

Tell me truthfully, how much did you enjoy the internship? Is it something you can see yourself doing for at least the next few years of your life?

I do it only for 3 weeks now. I don't think it's something i will do in my next years, because it's mostly registration work. But you have to start somewhere. I still like my student life more, going to school some hours and for the rest of the day your are free to play Hearthstone ^^

Besides hearthstone, which I'm sure you do a lot of, do you have any other hobbies?

Not anymore. I played table tennis for 4-5 years. I played it competitively, but for the fun with friends as well. In the weekend I'm still hanging out with friends sometimes, playing board or card games or watching a movie.

What kind of table tennis racket do you have? That really determines how serious you are.

I had a Butterfly racket. It's a racket that is made for me, I'm left-handed, with rubber on both sides. My brother and I broke the table in the summer 5 years ago, because we always played table tennis on it. That was the moment they bought a table and I started to play it, but I only play in the summer now.

Did the tournament go as you planned? What were some memorable games.

Not everything went how I planned it. I wanted to finish the first day with a 4-0 score, otherwise it would be really hard to qualify. I ended up 3-1, not a bad spot but with the hard competition it would be hard. The second day, I had a lost to Ostkaka and went 4-2. I needed to win 3 games in a row now, I thought this would be impossible but I did it.

I had 1 game, were I was 0-1 behind, and I had to go for a 25% Ragnaros to win the game. I got really lucky, it went to the face. Otherwise I would be 0-2, now I went 1-1 in the series. I had some bad rags before this one, but this time rag was my saver.

Take us through your choices of Priest, Druid, and Hunter. Why did you pick those classes, and did the decks you faced match up to your expectations?

To start with, my Druid was here to counter all the Rogues. Most people took top 16 with Rogue, and it was popular by a lot of players, so I needed a counter against it. My Druid was made to beat Miracle with ramp and Spectral Knights, and it did his job, it went 4-1 against Miracle. It was also a solid deck vs Hunter if they don't get a dream start.

My Priest felt really strong overall, and was just a deck that was hard to counter if the Miracle was out. I had series that the Priest carried me, but sometimes it disappointed me a bit. It was still a good choice for the more control decks and was able to win against Hunter.

My Hunter did his job, Huntered the opponent down. It was a version with a bit more control, and not heavy focused on the mirror, but I had a lot of success with it, and was unstoppable sometimes.

Why did you pick this style of hunter, 1 explosive trap and undertaker?

Undertaker is such a snowball card in the Hunter that it can just win you every matchup. With Webspinner, Haunted creeper and Mad Scientist your follow up is so good that Underaker is a must have in your Hunter in my opinion. The Explosive Trap was just a tech card for the aggro decks like Zoo, another trap for the scientist to put on the field and for the mirror.

Your druid curves out rather low, with a Chillwind Yeti, 2 Sen'jin Shieldmasta, and 2 Spectral Knights. Why did you decide on adding cards that are rarely seen in ramp?

As I said, my Druid was a tech deck made against Miracle. My other 2 decks were weak against it, so I needed a deck that could beat Miracle. The Chillwind Yeti is just a good 4 drop with his stats, and you need 4 drops vs miracle and didn't want to relay on my senjins only. The Spectral Knight is your MVP card vs Miracle, they have no way to deal with it, and you can trade with every 5 drop from the Miracle.

Many fans know you from your run on King of the Hill. Do you consider yourself one of the strongest players? how confident are you going into Sweden? are you looking forward to playing anyone in particular, who do you think are the best contenders right now?

I think i'm really consistent and can prepare myself for tournaments really well. For example, I still have the best run in the KOTH with 9 victorys in a row and 5 ZOTAC's wins. I never underestimate my opponents. I go with confidence to Sweden, but it's really hard to prepare. We play with the new patch, with the Leeroy and Starving Buzzard nerf, but we can't practice well before it. It's hard to say what will happen with the meta and what players gonna play now. It will be an awesome tournament for sure with some new decks probably!

How do you feel you will prepare for this without being able to do it on ladder? Are you happy that Hunter is nerfed?

For me that is not really hard, because I practice a lot with my team. I practice with Radu almost every day, as well as my other teammates. I play the ladder only when I have time, I focus way more on tournaments. I'm really happy with the Hunter nerf. I think a change to Hunter's Mark was better or changing buzzard in another way, but at least no meta were Hunter dominates.

Tell us something about yourself that fans don't know. What is your greatest fear? what is your darkest secret??

I don't have big secrets and i'm always honest. I think the fact that you can get my drunk really easily is funny. I don't need a lot of alcohol ^^

Do you have any shoutouts, last words, or social media links for us to plug?

Yes, shoutout to my teammates. Without them i couldn't make it! Also shoutouts to my team MYM and my family for supporting me.

Interview with Kaor

Can you introduce yourself to all your lovely new adoring Hearthstone fans?

I'm Italian, I come from Palermo, I'm 25 years old. I played Hearthstone since the beta.

Are you on a team right now and if not, do you have any practice partners?

Yes, actually I'm in an Italian team called pownedteam.

Can you introduce me to your team a bit? Are they mainly known in the itailan scene? And speaking of the Italian scene, how big is the scene in Italy? Are there major Italian-only tournaments or events like there are in France?

It's a new team the members are well know in Italy, three of us participated in Phase 1. Yes powned.it organizes a lot of tournaments that have granted the qualification to RoadtoBlizzcon Phase 1.

You actually originally finished with 6-3 record, barely not enough to qualify for the EU finals. However, due to your score differential, you were first in line to advance if one of the qualified players would cancel. How were you feeling when you lost your last series, not allowing you to originally qualify for Blizzcon?

I was a little disappointed to be reached until that point and had lost a chance like that.

When did you learn that you would advance due to Noisyboi dropping out? And how did you react then?

Initially I thought it was a mistake since the Blizzard had just published the list of qualified without my nickname. I was quite calm, my first thought was to start studying some English.

Haha, are you nervous at all about going to a foreign country or having to speak English in that foreign country?

I'm more nervous about this than the tournament itself. Honestly i'm scared like a baby xD

Is this about the time where you wish you paid more attention in school?

fucking yeah xD

Besides Hearthstone, do you have any interesting hobbies, especially any Italian-specific hobbies?

I love to play all types of video games, especially RPG, I like training in the gym and playing football too.

how much do you squat/bench/deadlift?

Squat 180kg bench press 140kg i don't do deadlift for a while.

For Americans, that's 400 lb, 310lb, which is quite a lot. Do you often have a ritual with lifting and Hearthstone such as you have to lift before Hearthstone or after?

I play before and after the workout unfortunately I cannot do it at the same time xD.

Oh why not? No iPad? And would you consider it once Hearthstone come out on phone?

No I don't have an iPad, yes why not!

Sounds like you should buy an iPad if you win some money from Blizzcon! Now let's talk a bit about the game. How long did you prepare for Blizzcon and what was your strategy going into the Phase 1 qualifiers?

I prepare myself for about a month, I tried to counter the strongest deck currently in the meta like Hunters.

You played a Priest deck, a Warrior deck, and a Druid deck. Would you say all three of your decks countered Hunters? Or was your strategy more complicated?

I played the Warrior for the good matchup against Miracle Rogue and Hunter, Druid for counter Handlock with Big Game Hunter and Black Knight main deck and mirror match and Priest because is my favorite deck

Looking back at your tournament performance, if you had to do it all over again, would you have changed anything?

No, I do not think I would change anything.

Out of your grueling 9 matches that you played, which one would you deem was your hardest?

I think the most difficult was the last match , my opponent surprised me playing as first Miracle Rogue deck

Ah, is that not common?

If I remember correctly I played in all the tournament against only 2 Miracle Rogue.

Yea, they didn't seem to be TOO common in the tournament, but certainly a lot of them did well. Can you rank the 5 most difficult opponents you expect to face at the Blizzcon EU finals?

5 Reynad 4 Theude 3 Neirea 2 Kolento 1 Lifecoach

Thanks and finally, would you like to give any shoutouts or plugs?

I want to give a shoutouts to my girlfriend and all my friends who have followed me until now.

Thanks a lot! To finish it off, can i have all links to your social media.

Here's my Facebook.

If you're looking for headline quotes, here are my choices:

Reynad: "I think that EU and NA are exactly equal in terms of skill"

TheFallen: "I didn't play Hunter, so I think I wasn't predictable"

MrYagut: "I was almost sure that I would be one of the top 14 players"

Thijs: "I play the ladder only when I have time, I focus way more on tournaments."
The world is better when every background has a chance.

Wow, that one kind of slipped under the radar... Went ahead and used your suggestions.

For Thijs it says Phase One: 0-0 and for Mryagut it seems like one match is missing in his list.

Otherwise great interviews again. Will be nice to see all these guys live.

I haven't taken time to get to know the other players besides the popular streamers like Trump and consistent winners like Kolento. So these interviews really shed some light on these names I see though the brackets.

Great stuff, keep it up!

dieplstks streamed my Sludge Belcher hunter deck (specifically created to beat the hunter mirror) a month ago on Twitch. Reynad has had a history of fighting with this guy on twitter and twitch, so I am prtetty sure Reynad stole my deck that night instead of the story he mentions here about reckful coming up with it. http://www.twitch.tv/dieplstks

There is VOD evidence of Reynad causing hundreds of people to join dieplstks room on Twitch and twitter evidence as well.

I personally do not care enough to go get the VODS, but the Sludge Belcher hunter was played on stream by another player WEEKS before Reynad claims that reckful mistakenly streamed it.

This is a very small card pool, people will independently come up with the same stuff, so I am not sure why Reynad thinks he gets carte blanche to claim EVERY twist on a deck when it is super obvious to any seasoned CCG player that sludge belcher was absurd in the mirror. Anyone who ran hunter without sludge belcher was just too lazy to test it and assumed it was bad because it isnt a beast. It's the ONLY card that can allow you to come back from being behind in the hunter mirror (that was not already heavily played).

Only read the Reynad one so far. Great stuff but needs proofreading. Some spelling errors and the last part of one answer seems to have been lumped into the answer for the next question.
