Yes, Star Wars/Trek has some pretty hardcore nerd fans, but Star Trek has been a fairly "mainstream" TV show for many...decades! And there's countless other movies you could talk about that are "Sci fi" that you wouldn't consider nerdy, like anything set in the future (I'm thinking of a movie like Minority Report, or A.I.), killer robot types (Robocop omg?), killer monsters (Cloverfield, although I haven't seen it, etc. Godzilla) The only two truly accepted fantasy tv/movies have been Harry Potter and LOTR. And I wouldn't even say those are fully accepted. I know a few people that would never watch a LOTR movie for it being too nerdy. And the vast majority of guys I'd say over 20ish wouldn't read/want to watch Harry Potter. I know TL is probably an exception since I and a lot of others have read and enjoyed the books, but we are definitely not a balanced representation of the male population (most of whom don't read) :/

Also note: harry potter and LOTR are a very unique form of fantasy and i really woulden't use them as the main example of the genre since there are much better pieces of literature and film.

Fantasy is unrealistic and doesn't try to be realistic at all, so that's OK. Sci-Fi sometimes tries to make unrealistic shit sound plausible. For example, any movie involving "hacking" erks the shit out of me. I was watching Swordfish last night, and Hugh Jackman's character is presented with a 512-bit encrypted authentication that he has to break in 60 seconds. It shows his character trying to brute force the password, "anon, anonymous, admin, administrator, pass, ..." and then he nails it. Might as well be Fantasy because it would take the age of the universe to brute force a password that way. 60 seconds, pshhhh.

Star Trek vs Bladerunner = ST is noobish nerd shit while Bladerunner is all around awesome movie that's intelligent entertainment Willow vs Xena: The Warrior Princess = I don't really have to explain this, do I? Most things considered nerdy are usually poor quality, pulled out of the ass, dumb, low budget etc. etc. stuff (low budget not being a major factor here but still). Most things that SHOULD be nerdy are usually based on the literary classics within the Fantasy/Sci-Fi genre, have deep plot, are written by the people who actually know what they're doing (Arthur C. Clarke anyone?) and not only nerds like them. Examples of good fantasy/sci-fi: (only movies) Sci-Fi: 2001 the Space Oddysey Bladerunner Clockwork Orange Gattaca Dune (only version directed by Lynch) Experiments Lain (anime) Donnie Darko Fantasy: Lord of the Rings trilogy Willow Pan's Labyrinth Spirited Away (anime) Mononoke Hime (anime) The Neverending Story So to classify nerdy: Movies/books that fall into fantasy/sci-fi category, are usually supported by large amounts of franchise (action figures, comics, various items) (LotR might be an exception here, but popularity made it so), they're much lower quality than works that have 'defined' the genre etc. etc. (and notice that usually things that are nerdy have their TV series - Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Xena and Hercules and stuff like that).
