It's interesting to see what's going on with blizzard. Sc2 is out the door. WoW is doing it's best to stay relevant and current. And might I add they're doing a good job keeping it afloat. Releasing classic was a brilliant business move. The only problem is, what do they do once classic is stale and people are tired of it?
The obvious issue is people are tired of the current state of WoW.
Sc2 is just hanging on by a thread.
I think if Diablo 4 releases and is exceptional, it would restore my faith in Blizzard. But I'm remaining cautious. Especially after buying RDR2 and still being unable to play it almost a week after launch.
On the same note, i bought COD:MW and that game is outstanding.

Dustin Browder left Blizzard to zero fan fare a few months ago. At one point he was promoted up to "Vice President". I wonder if Browder left under a 2 year non-compete clause. I wonder if he can immediately go work for Rob Pardo the way Josh Moshqueira did when he left Blizzard.

question: why the hell do you think Rob would want to hire Dustin?
There are a lot of rumors out there that Rob wasn't a big fan of the direction things were going in.
I hear a lot of shit that he was responsible for the AH in D3 and wasn't a big fan of micro transactions.
Not sure if Rob would ever want to work with Dustin again.

Browder wasn't on the Diablo3 team. He oversaw RTS development stuff ,Heroes of the Storm, and the World Builder for SC2. Nothing with Diablo3. I've never heard any of the Diablo 3 team mention Browder.
Is there anything out there showing Browder worked on D3?

Rob stated publicly he enjoyed the small team atmosphere of the Hearthstone development squad. https://tl.net/forum/games/552599-dreams-of-starcraft-3?page=2#27 He claims he is recreating that model with his new company. I highly suspect this is true. Deciding team sizes at Blizzard was way above Browder;s management level. Browder worked under Pardo.

good question. I don't have any direct evidence the 2 were really good friends. We do know Browder arrived after Pardo.. Browder started beneath Pardo in the management hierarchy and Browder got promoted under him. I don't have any evidence Pardo thinks Browder is great though. Do you have any evidence Pardo dislikes Browder?
|
Schreier says Browder left after Project Ares (Starcraft Shooter) was stomped and he never did anything in the Diabloverse. The good/ bad relation with Pardo is pure speculation IMO
Maybe Browder did terrible, terrible damage to Pardo at a Blizzard Christmas party
|
Personal opinion, I didn't really like the direction Browder lead SC2 or Heroes. Both games seemed to improve quite a bit after he moved on from them. There could be a lot more behind it, but that is what I gleaned from his works.
|
Browder had a really tough job working on Red Alert 2 and Starcraft 2. Both franchises had established fan bases with very specific requirements for any sequel ; both fan bases had very specific and very different tastes and opinions on what makes for a great RTS game.
Personal opinion here as well. I think Browder did a great job on both RA2 and SC2 in moving the games forward while keeping a substantial portion of the existing fan bases satisfied.
I thought Heroes of the Storm was a major massive failure.
I think Pardo, Browder, and Kim are all brilliant RTS game designers. The RTS fanbase, which includes me, should count itself lucky that guys of this caliber didn't "go where the money is" earlier in their careers.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-11-07-activision-and-ea-insiders-have-been-profiting-from-selling-stock-during-buybacks
Among them was CEO Bobby Kotick, who sold nearly four million shares for $180.8 million the day after the announcement -- 15% higher than he would have sold them for before stock rose based on the news. Kotick's business partner and chairman of the board Brian Kelly sold over five million shares for $230.1 million.
Another example given was Electronic Arts, which also announced a buyback program in 2017.
Within 23 days, CEO Andrew Wilson sold shares for $2.1 million at prices between 12% and 19% higher than they were before the announcement.

just brutal. i didn't know that in 2010 Blizzard made it so players had to pay over and above the monthly subscription fee to play all the WoW content. When you're riding your best thoroughbred you can only go to the whip so many times.
thanks for posting.

thanks for posting. Wasn't to play. It was for cosmetic items. And they had had exclusive content that you couldn't get since the very first blizzcon. They were just selling it themselves now instead of letting pets and fireworks be sold on eBay for hundreds of dollars.
It was concerning because people feared the slippery slope, but that slope never happened. That video is just one guy's opinion, and he makes a huge deal of blizzard selling cosmetic items and the always connected nature of battle.net 2.0. I experienced both of those and in hindsight they were really no big deal at all. The Diablo 3 AH... that was a true disaster. But the video is just ra stream of whining. Anything for the views, I guess...

XBOX 1 S All Digital was roundly criticized in May when it was released. Welp, the invisible hand of Adam Smith pushed the price of the poorly received console model down to $150 USD in North America for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It came bundled with 3 games.

Rob has hired other guys who worked under him in the past. Dustin Browder worked under him at Blizzard for a long time and received promotions during that time. If Rob Pardo were unhappy with Dustin he would've disappeared without a word from Blizzard other than "Dustin Browder no longer works at Blizzard". Dustin Browder would not have been promoted.

The XBOX 1 S "All Digital" is again "on sale" in Canada for $220 Canadian money at Walmart. I suspect the price will go back down to $180 Canadian during Boxing Day sales.

Video game sales dropped slightly in 2019 in the UK. The alleged cause is that its the end of the console cycle. The previous time video game sales dropped in the UK occurred in 2012. That was the last full year of the XBOX 360/PS3 generation.

Microsoft has left open an exploit to get the Game Pass Ultimate for the price of the XBOX Live Gold Service. This is typical MS shenanigans. They know the exploit is there and they are not going to do anything about it. They figure if you are smart enough to figure it out and cheap enough to do the work to pull it off... they'd rather have you paying the lower price.

The interesting thing there is the 21.7% drop in physical sales. Will probably even in the short run lead to the full closure of dedicated gaming store chains. Same trend you see in most other countries as well. I've even bought games online when they are more expensive since ordering home or going to a store is bothersome.
Think they need to create a culture around the games and drag interest apart from the actual purchase to stick around. Though hard to think of how that can be done when most places don't see success of LAN cafes that would be that.

Fortnite, down 28% from 2018, is the top grossing game of 2019 at $1.8 Billion. https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/how-much-did-fortnite-make-in-2019-2020-1-1028792030

yea, shopping is a P.I.T.A. for me as well. I think some people like "bargain hunting" in physical stores though.
The corporate gaming stores like EB Games and GameStop are going down fast. In my area (southern ontario canada//western new york state, USA) the local family owned game shop is starting to rise again. Also, liquor licensed places with video games to play and watch are starting to open up.
Still, I don't know if these new places are bringing in the kind of revenue/profit a 90s game shop did. Somehow, I doubt it.

XBOX Series X will not feature exclusives for the first year and possibly for the first two years.
“As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices,” said Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty in a recent interview with MCV. “We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we’re committed to them with content.”

Clarified that Microsoft is referring to first-party games published under Xbox Game Studios, and not all games on the Xbox platform.
Interesting move by Microsoft.
