The Biden garbage remark is interesting because it’s a pretty insignificant line from a guy the consensus already decided is senile and incoherent anyway. But ever since “47%” and then “deplorables” the media has had a fixation on any time a candidate says something that might be interpretable as criticizing the voters, because they might need to construct a narrative later about why that person lost.
This is a bit silly, Trump criticizes anybody that doesn’t support him all the time. Half the time he’s accusing them of crimes. A defender might insist he generally doesn’t criticize *everybody* that doesn’t support him, which I’m not even sure is true, but anyway neither did Hillary and nobody cared about that. The difference, obviously, is that it’s not a “gaffe” when Trump is nasty about somebody because that’s his entire thing. 90% of the contents by volume. It might actually be a “gaffe” for him if he said something like McCain in 2008 – “I don’t think Harris is evil or Satanic or a secret Muslim; I think she’s a good person who I happen to disagree with on important policies” might instantly sink him.

If there's a silver lining to the last 8 years, it's that we're not pretending everything is fine like we did back then. While on the one hand people like McCain had a decorum that is easy to yearn for these days, it was also dressing up the fact that Republicans (and Democrats) back then were still doing some pretty awful things. We didn't even have the language back then, or the Overton Window, necessary to really discuss a lot of the shit we still have to reckon with.

I’ve always considered it as a land of rather extreme contrasts, you’ve some of the best of what humanity offers alongside some of the worst, especially in terms of systemic cruelty/dysfunction
It’s purely anecdotal of course, and hey many of us didn’t take the plunge back in my day, but many aspired to one day study or move to the States, some of us in my cohort applied to US colleges and a couple crossed the Atlantic
