The problem is that in the US, tip is basically how waiters are paid. They don't actually get a lot of salary, the 15% is their salary. The reason for that, as far as i know, is taxes that don't need to be paid on taxes, and probably also other things like social security or healthcare they don't need to give the waiter if they pay them horribly bad.
For some reason, it is also often legal to pay waiters below minimum wage.
While in Europe, waiters are actually paid, so the tip is just that, a tip that scales with how much you enjoyed the service. In the US, it is basically a system of tax evasion and skipping benefits for the waiters. Which sucks on a general level, but also makes it pretty shitty not to tip the waiter, because the tip isn't a bonus but their actual salary. It is a lot more honest to not think of it as 15% tip, but as 15% salary of waiter. The US has a lot of these costs that you are only told about when you need to pay the bill, so that is apparently fine there.

I was recently out with a material engineer grad that actually just gave up trying and used an app. Something tells me the frequency of our math issues go deeper than just the education. Decimals into percentages and fractions are notorious areas. "I don't do fractions" is something I heard every year in math class from 3rd grade till high school.

I swear I see some story about a kid selling stuff in their front yard so their family member isn't left to die by the US healthcare system, or raise money for cops or whatever and it's celebrated. Black kid in the Bay sells some water, better get the police here ASAP!
She sells weed for dogs (and people) for a living btw. She is the epitome of what's wrong with commercial cannabis.
we invented calculators so that we wouldn't need to do arithmetic ourselves.
Sure, although you might be surprised as to just how many adults wouldn't know what to type into a calculator to generate a 15% tip. For example, a sizable percentage of customers would try doing something like dividing by 15 or .15.
That being said, phones nowadays have "tip calculator" apps which lets the user just plug in numbers without needing to type the math equation. It obviously takes longer to take out the phone and use the app than it takes someone who's decent at arithmetic to move the decimal place and add half, but I guess the results are what matters. It disappoints me to watch someone use that app, and when I show them the quick 15% trick they usually respond positively to it, sometimes shocked that that's all you need to do to find the tip.
As a european, this concept of tipping in the US (not tipping itself but how it's done) is maybe one of the most foreign things of the US to me.
Don't get me wrong. If the waiter did his/her job properly, i tip. I don't do maths though, i just round it to the next big number depending on how much i spend on the meal. Trying to do math to figure out how much i'm voluntarily giving someone to appreciate a job well done seems very.. american to me. If i have two coffees and it comes up to 7,40eur, i'll give a tenner and leave the rest. On a 94eur meal with my wife i'll give 100 and leave the rest. My barber takes 8 for a haircut, i give 10 and leave the rest - and so on. Only if the meal comes up to like 99eur, i'll give like 105/110 depending on what money i have in paper in my wallet.
Over here tipping is voluntary to appreciate a job well done, doesn't seem to be the case in the US really. If i'm expected to tip a certain amount, just put it on the bill then.
Sidenote, i'm also in the 10%, plus half of that camp, for example checking discounts in electronic stores etc.
Oh absolutely. It's my understanding that the United States is one of the only places in the world where the government has decided that it's okay for restaurant businesses to pay their staff basically nothing and insist that customers pay the staff's wages instead. It's total bullshit, it means that the serving staff's wages are unpredictable and inconsistent, and it's generally not fair.

Only got the german source here so i won't bother linking it - Sarah Sanders got thrown out of a restaurant, on behalf of gay people working there. As in, she was asked nicely to leave by the owner, because the owner values honesty, compassion etc.
Some republicans are already in full mental gymnastic mode to justify the baker not serving a gay person, but gays not serving an anti-gay person/government is "the end of a democratic america".
Kinda ironic if you think about it objectively. It's okay to discriminate against people if you state that you believe in mystical fairies, but it's a scandal if you do it based on your own morals. I can't be the only one seeing the irony there.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said she was kicked out of a Virginia restaurant by its owner because she works for President Donald Trump. "Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left," Sanders posted on Twitter Saturday. "Her actions say far more about her than about me," Sanders said. "I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so." When reached for comment by CNN, Sanders referred to the tweet she posted.
The owner Stephanie Wilkinson told The Washington Post in an interview Saturday that she "would have done the same thing again."
It was only a matter of time before they got a taste of their own medicine. Live by the golden rule, die by the golden rule - it's not a golden ruler you get to hit people with. Sucks that there was a need for it to happen at all.
Eh. It's only a thing if the right wing press goes mental over it. I've not seen much turn up about it, though I suspect Breitbart is going whinge-fest. Has Trump tweeted about it yet?
The most irritating part is that Sanders tweeting about it is a violation of government regulations. They are not allowed to use their position to gain favorable treatment or threaten/cause retaliation. Of course they don’t give a shit, but it is depressing. The owner of Red Hen is going to face a lot of harassment.

From my experience, the rule of thumb is that if you pay after you have eaten, you tip. If you pay before eating, don't tip.
But what about in places like Portland where receipts have a giant disclaimer at the top saying something like "MANDATORY HEALTH CARE CHARGE OF 15% ADDED SO WE CAN PROVIDE FOR OUR EMPLOYEES"

That is just called honesty and good employment practices.

Really? When I see things like that I think "oh, well that's just a PC way of getting people to be okay with putting more money in the CEO's pocket."

I think you really have to stretch to say this is "using her position" to "gain favorable treatment or threaten/cause retaliation." You might as well say media are prohibited from reporting on what happened, since they are doing so against a victim that cannot post her own side about what happened.
Strangely enough, the "bake that cake" side is strangely silent to say the owner should have been forced to serve the press secretary if there was any justice in the world.
One of the only times I will agree with this man. Trump truly does view most of the world as tribal. He's unashamed in fighting for his presumed tribe. The left, far from showing the world is not close to Trump's vision, actively seeks to make it so. Sad, really.
I see it mostly as this weird idea of not telling people what something actually costs before they have to pay that is apparently normal in the US. I don't care how you divide up the money i give you. I don't care how much of it is taxes. I just want to know how much money i need to give you when i want the thing you are selling. The actual amount. Not "Take this number, add x% tax, y% for something else, and maybe half a dollar for maintenance or whatever". All of that is your internal calculation. The information i need is how much money i need to hand you when i want the thing, you do the bookkeeping yourself.
This is how it works everywhere in europe, as far as i know. If something has a price tag attached, the number on the price tag is the amount of money i need to give to the shop to get the thing. In the US, for inexplicable reasons, it is not.

Well it was quite the opposite: If people are okay with bakers not baking cakes for gay ceremonies, then those people better not complain about restauranteurs not serving SHS.

And then those people who complain about people not baking cakes for gay ceremonies then those people should complain when other people are denied service.

Yes the government in in charge of deciding who we should and shouldn't cheer being denied service.
The general consensus is that it's not cool to discriminate against someone for what they are (disabled, of a specific race, born a specific nationality, gay etc) but it's okay to discriminate against someone because of what they do (lie to the public, defend indefensible and evil policies etc).
Sarah Sanders isn't being discriminated against because of what she is, she's being discriminated against because she acts like a walking piece of shit.
Honestly this is really simple and I am amazed that conservatives keep misunderstanding it and thinking that liberals believe that conservatives ought to be a protected class, and then get surprised each time they learn liberals don't actually think that. It rings somewhat of "your ideology isn't the one that I ascribed to you, and that makes you wrong!" to me.

I'm not disagreeing I'm just pointing out what you originally said sounds pretty weird. Like different animals being endangered or not.
It is not any different than an officer flashing is badge at a bar to prevent the bouncer from throwing them out. It’s not allowed. That move would have ended a political career just 10 years ago. Citizens have the right to protest their governments actions without fear of retaliation from government officials inconvenienced by the protest. I’m surprised some of the conservatives are comfortable with this clear abuse of power.
