what's currently unclear is the period between now and the election. it appears the FPOE are very much open to kicking mr. Kurz to the curb(supporting a vote of no confidence against the chancellor by one of the left wing parties, or the Neos), basically revenge for him trying to get rid of interior secretary/minister Kickl(a highly dangerous right wing politician - though a key FPOE "player") and keeping the rest of the current government. a deal unacceptable for the FPOE and their base - Kickl is highly popular for being anti-migration etc... and after losing Strache (#1 in the FPOE for quite a while - and Gudenus (#1 in Vienna and even a vice mayor). campaigning season came early ![]() //typo, clarification

Nothing special about it here, it is the election people forget about. Even though it in many ways is more important than the national elections.

and that's the "fault" of the current structure and relationship between member states and the EU institutions and how the elections are set up. hardly anyone knows Weber or Timmermans, and it's very much about them as well. now add to that the fact that achievements on the EU level are not being communicated properly. there are quite a few problems, don't get me wrong. and they need to be pointed out. but so should the "wins" of EU legislation - GDPR anyone? getting that done, even with all its problems associated with it (letting big data companies do their thing unhindered for so long and then coming in with the big guns will just do that...) has US lawmakers now talking about going a similar route. especially after all the Facebook/Cambride Analytica and various other extraordinary (hacking/stealing whole databases with private user data?) events and scandals. and now add to that the totally unexpected implosion of the Austrian Government, and there won't be much time and interest left here. it's gonna be interesting how turnout is gonna be. how will this mainly "national" event with big implications on the EU level - Strache was a big player in the "family of right wing populist parties - influence the EU election? polling data is void now after the Strache video. interesting times ahead.

France - not much noise on the subject, as in other countries the european election is often used to address local matters. Elections themselves: 34 lists to chose from, 6 expected to make the cut (5%) and have representatives. According to latest polls, should be, out of 79 representatives: - LRM (current ruling party and allies) and RN (ex-FN, far right) ahead with 20-25 seats each - LR (rightwing) / LFI (leftwing) / EELV (green) with about 10 each - PS (center left) with 5 (if they make the cut) From what I understood of their stance on europe: - LRM, pro-europe, campaigns on ecology regulation and taxes on foreign multinationals operating in europe (GAFA mainly). Aims to ally at european level with social democrats in a large center group - RN no longer advocating getting France out of euro zone and europe, still very much a nationalist/populist party - LR, advocates a reform of europe to add a protectionist layer and some form of frontier control inside europe (I guess aiming at the Syria immigration crisis) - LFI advocates a reform of europe, campaigns against social dumping (for a minimum salary at european level for example) and the possibility for countries to renegociate/get out of some past regulations/treaties. Would join a left group (with spanish, portuguese and scandinavian left parties) - EELV pro-europe, targetting mainly regulation for ecology at european level - PS pro-europe, propositions for the creation of taxes at europe level and a grant to all european students

Also, while being so complex, there's also a feeling of it being trivial (at least that's how I feel).. Which is the point of the EU. People treat and critizise it as if it was a big supernational state with democratic elections and a government (commission). The truth is far from it. It is a grown framework of supernational contracts which has administrative structures which in certain parts resemble those of Western bureaucratic states. This difference between expectation (which has been created to legitimize the EU without having to be a democratic state) and reality is what is causing most of the EUs problems. People like Macron are pushing towards more republican frameworks to make the expectation come true, people like the far-right use the expectation myth to destroy what little consensus there is.

Chancellor Kurz has asked president Van der Bellen to release interior minister Herbert Kickl (FPOE). This triggered all other FPOE ministers to ask for their release, except for foreign minister Karin Kneissl. The president and the chancellor are non-stop discussing the situation. New "expert" ministers could be installed as soon as tomorrow. The parliament will probably come together on monday and the JETZT party will ask for a vote of no confidence against chancellor Kurz. It is necessary that both, FPOE and SPOE vote in favor of it. It is uncertain if either of them will do so. Behind the scenes there is also talk that Van der Bellen has threatened to release the parliament to avoid chaos up to the election.

Protest in front of the chancellors office for hours until Kurz finally gave in and ended this bullshit. Maybe not the main reason why he eventually did it, but surely a factor.

All they did was blocking the square... I am all for open protests but this one did nothing. It was the big guns of the ovp who forced kurz hand

When I hear someone say East Europe I assume they mean European countries that were communist after ww2 (minus East Germany because it's Germany now).

It's purely a meaningless label, like arguing whether Turkey is in Europe or not. 100 years ago, the lands under which we would now call Turkey counted as being in Europe. Now it does not. During the Cold War, by some measures, even none of Russia counted as in Europe, a curious geographical impossibility. It is simply not a useful descriptor of anything in particular, other than that they are "not us" , the "us" being "West Europe".
