Well obviously they did, but they have grabbed a lot of disenfranchised people who never voted and upset labour and conservative voters aswell.

Its a peaceful democratic party, it gives people a voice, I think it is ok they aren't set to win much or hold the balance of power so I don't see anything wrong.

well in my opinion it's a front for a nasty, racist undercurrent.
The rise in it's popularity is due to uneducated xenophobes

I'd take UKIP over the BNP any day.

100% agree with you.
I just weep that either party gets significant votes.

suggests Cons could get more seats than the exit poll

EU referendum pretty much has to happen but I think the chance of voting to leave is pretty low. Well, hopefully because the EU really helps people like me to actually feel more or less on par with British citizens' rights in the UK. I know some of British nationalists wouldn't like that but no one chooses their citizenship anyway. Edit: I haven't used the welfare system at all despite what UKIP likes to tell about Bulgarians and Romanians. You're welcome to it if you need it, friend. The idea that you could simply leave the EU, or unilaterally negotiate your own special snowflake membership terms, is kind of silly honestly. The threat of a referendum has been used as a stick to beat the other parties with by UKIP and their success pushed it into popular politics but there has yet to be a plan for what would actually be done if the UK voted no. I don't think a referendum would be held by any party who didn't expect to win it (with win being a stay vote), the clusterfuck resulting from having to actually do anything would deter a party from risking it.
Of course we can simply leave the EU, and there is nothing unilateral about negotiations. That said, it is very unlikely that the country will actually vote to leave. Depends how insulting the EU is when Cameron attempts to hold talks about reforms.
Single market is all well and good. This is what we signed up for, after all. But the vision that most European countries have for the EU is so far removed from what the UK wants that negotiations are pretty necessary I think. We do not want to be part of some superstate lead by Germany, propping up countries who cannot function because they are sharing a currency with much bigger economies in totally different situations.
I would say we share the idealism of Europe working together, but we despise the idea of our laws being made abroad.

So Nigel is pretty much on the verge of resignation? Less opportunities to laugh at his bullshit, but good for the country I guess.
That exit poll also predicts the conservatives may have more seats than they have now. Props to them as the ruling party usually loses votes. At least in my country.

Then Douglas Carswell will sweep the leadership and take the party in a better direction.

I look forward to finding out if Salmond wins his seat, if he loses to the Lib Dems there I'll laugh pretty hard.
