And the winner is: Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne! After several days of voting, you have chosen Warcraft III as Teamliquid's Favorite Video Game! I hope you had fun during this tournament, and that you were able to recall fond memories of playing some of your favorite games in the past. Maybe you were even exposed to some games you've never experienced and want to try out. In any case, congratulations to Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne!
CURRENT ROUND OF VOTING - Finished
Introduction
Hello, and welcome to my "Teamliquid's Favorite Video Game" thread. This post is a continuation of this thread. The OP over there has been inactive for a month now, and has told me that he doesn't want to deal with it anymore. He suggested that I create a new thread for the voting to take place in, which will be here. So vote away, let your opinion be known, and have fun taking part in the discussions that will ensue!
Purpose
The purpose of this thread is not to determine the best video game in existence, for such a thing does not exist. Instead, the main purpose of this thread is to showcase many of the greatest games ever created in a fun, mildly competitive format. Hopefully, this thread will expose people to many incredible games that they have never heard of before, as well as allow people to express their opinions about some of their favorite games. That is what this thread is about.
Format
All of the games here were nominated in the previous thread. This is where I got this pool of games. The winning game will be decided via a single-elimination tournament format. There are 16 sub-tournaments that each represent a different game genre. Of course, there are more than 16 genres of video games, so I did my best to make the first couple rounds compare as closely similar games as possible. After the 16 winners have been voted for, a final tournament will determine which game is the ultimate Teamliquid favorite. Before any of this happens though, a preliminary round of voting will occur which will determine which game will qualify if it is part of a series. The brackets are already made, with placeholders for games that are in a series. When this first round of voting is completed, I will replace the placeholders with the actual games that were chosen by the community.

Super Mario 64 wasn't included in this round of voting because I felt the 3D game was different enough from the 2D platformers in feel and style. It is still in the platformers bracket, so we will have 2 Mario games there.

As discussed in the previous thread, Starcraft should not be included because of the bias that Teamliquid holds towards those games. This seemed to be largely the majority opinion.

I thought these polls were going to be dominated by nostalgia and 'old school/original' elitism, though I'm noticing some of these are getting dominated simply by what's the newest in the series. It's obviously too early to tell, so I'm gonna keep an eye on this lol
The ones I feel strongest about: Final Fantasy VII, Zelda: Link to the Past, Gran Turismo 3: A-spec. Absolute classics, none of those should lose. Also, I've got a soft spot for Civ2, but Civ4 is definitely the best in the series.

i just couldnt decide between super mario world ad mario bros 3 damn u also warcraft 2 vs warcraft 3 was heartbraking im really sad now.. why you make me choose x.x
Bleh, seems like people are voting for the game they know/played opposed to not voting if they don't know...
All the votes are for games that more outdated now, likely because people have been busy on TL or Starcraft with gaming and just haven't played the new ones. I voted for first round, I think I'm going to get frustrated with the rest, so that's all the voting I'll be doing.
Your polls are seriously lacking... Smash bros poll without brawl? A Final Fantasy poll with only 7 entries, are you crazy? Only MK 1 & 2 for Mortal Kombat?

Best adventure game... no Zelda games or Super Mario 64?
No party games? Best sports game includes Kirby?
Best RTS doesn't have SC1 or SC2? Bomberman is a Classic (look at the others)?
I've found a million more problems. I don't really like this
Zelda is in the Adventure Bracket and Super Mario 64 is in the platformers bracket. Party games are in the Casual bracket. The Kirby game is a golf game. SC in the polling would lead to bias. I guess we have conflicting views on Bomberman.

I've never heard of their number 1 game, and several of those games are turn based strategy so... yeah that list sucks.
Now that I think about it, they probably insulted Starcraft so that angry people would post their dumb list on forums and spread it for them. Any "top n" list that requires you to manually click through every page to reach the end is just trying to generate ad revenue. It probably took them an hour tops to write the whole thing and it will net them a lot of traffic.
For me, and for a lot of people Im sure, Kingdom Hearts is really missing on this, unless I missed it. I dont think, because if it was here, there should be a poll also for the qualifier of KH, cause, you know, there are a bunch.
And also on RPG no Fire Emblem? Final Fantasy Tactics? Well I guess there are just to many good games. Anyways, Im pretty sure Chrono is going to take the RPG one.

Unfortunately, no one nominated Kingdom Hearts, so it's not here. However, Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics are in the turn-based strategy bracket.
when you do the actual voting, you should preface it with a disclaimer that individuals not familiar with both games should refrain from voting.
ps, if anything other than tecmo super bowl or RBI baseball loses sports, i will lose faith in this forum. A distant third is mario tennis. You forgot mario golf (which is a GREAT game).

I would have totally mentioned Brawl, what the hell that ones my favorite!
The lack of Advanced Wars in Turn Based Strategy makes me very sad. Also. having Perfect Dark vs Golden Eye first round in the shooters, that's just cruel.
EDIT: also not a single flight simulator under the simulation games? (and by flight simulator I mean the realistic ones where you take off from airports and such)
How is Half Life 2 better than Half Life? Way too much talking as story telling and stupid "riddles". And it wasn't a tenth as revolutionary as Half Life 1.

Thanks for the reply! My bad on Fire Emblem and FFTactics. And when were those nominations? Oh man, I guess its too late anyway. Well, if a videogame is unable to attend the tournament, you should add Kingdom Hearts as the replacement! =P Great effort! Enjoying it
Can you add a sentence to the top of the OP in bold that says something like "Game nominations have ended" ? I don't know if that will fix the problem, but all these misinformed posts are cumbersome to this thread.
I went through every single polling vote option and decided that I can't partake in this discussion. There are too many games that I haven't played, and those I have I can't decide on.
I much more enjoyed Aoe3 than Aoe2 but that's because I played Aoe3 when it was actually alive and active. Similarly, both the Portals (1 and 2) were good games and I could hardly decide which one is better than the other. I have the same problem with Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.
I'm just sorry but I can't vote. I'm too indecisive.

At some point, these kind of polls are useless. The therm "Best" isn't something universal, it's an opinion. This usually means that: fan base > quality. Nevertheless, this will be fun. So sad see that company of heroes and dawn of war has been placed against each other. I guess it has something to do with them being quite similar in game play.
I guess its a small sample size but a lot of these opinions stun me. Most shocking is that RE:4 isnt running away with its poll since its not just the best RE but one of the best games of this century. Sort of surprised that Halo:CE is beating 2 considering 2 had easily the best console online experience ever and possibly best overall but the single player was worse.
MSG4 doesnt even deserve a vote due to some truly horrendous story decision, mostly near the end, that basically ruined the game.
For 2D marios I probably would have nominated Mario 2 (the japanese one that is) just because that was the hardest non megaman game ive probably played in 2d and they handled it well (as opposed to how origanal handled it).
Edit: Also, I think a mod should make a note as to why SC isnt in the poll because it seems to be what 1 in every 3 peopel are asking.

If SC2 wins that poll over BW because of the recent influx of new TL members, there's going to be a riot.
It would be like the The Elder Scrolls poll, look at Skyrim's numbers lol.
And someone not voting Hitman: Blood Money in the Hitman poll has to be insane. I take it that "Hitman" is the first game in the series, Codename 47? Not that it matters which Hitman that is up against Blood Money, because nothing can touch it. Blood Money is a masterpiece in its genre really, and it isn't missing anything the other games have. Just trying to play any of the older games after you have been trying to maximize the potential in Blood Money you realize how big of a progression they made with Blood Money.
Red alert 2 is the best command and conquer Diablo 1 was better than the second Skyrim is the best Elder scrolls Vice City is the best GTA

UT2004 is much much much better than the original. Ut2k4 is pure genius and the best multiplayer shooter ever. Stop being a hipster and acknowledge the greatness! Obviously no one has played every single game thats nominated (maybe TB?).
Imo it wasnt that hard to give out votes. Warcraft 3 is way better than Warcraft 2, Diablo 2 MUCH better than Diablo 1 (take that poster above ) and Civ 4 is also the best game in that series imo.
I would have liked X-COM: Apocalypse to be an option as its the X-COM game I enjoyed the most.

Mega Man vs Mega Man X? Really now, Mega Man 2 is considered the flagship title of the original series, not the first game. If you are really going by the original thread, maybe you should reconsider. Mega Man 2 is actually the only one mentioned in the original thread, besides "Mega Man series".
Why the hell are Dark Souls and Demon Souls in Action? Demon souls was rated best "RPG" the year it came out. Yes, it's an ARPG, but so is Diablo. Also, why the hell would anybody put them side by side? It's a no-brainer. Dark Souls is bigger and better. But, my god, Action???
By the way, another suggestion for RTS: Fallout: Tactics it's better than a lot of the games on the RTS list.

Horror: The Thing and The Suffering
I put Dark Souls and Demon Souls in Action because I wanted them to compete with games like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, as all these games are considered extremely difficult and hardcore.

The same with Mortal Kombat III, that was the most played and most awesome Mortal Kombat of the original 3, it was a master piece how come?
Chrono Trigger should have been included, it's the best game of all times lol.
Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate and Mortal Kombat Trilogy were even more beast. 2D Fighting games beware.

Holy shit what the hell is up with the stacked octafinals in rpgs?
CC vs SOM? EB vs Pokemon? FF vs GS? Skies of Arcadia vs SMRPG?
I'd break my neck trying to even CONSIDER choosing between any of those four pairings
Have disparate JRPG and WRPG polls as well - they're functionally distinct to pretty much any non-greenhorn gamer at this point...
This..... not only should J and W RPGs be in completely separate brackets, but the current bracketing is just awful. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy should be on complete opposite sides of the bracket, for example.... I would not be surprised if the winner of that battle wins the RPG bracket handily (with the possibility of an Elder Scrolls upset since for some reason you have two different genres in the same bracket)

They're not that difficult and not that hardcore, but mostly, Demons Souls and Dark Souls are ARPGS. If you're starving for more Action titles, Bayonetta was pretty good, and actually acts as something comparable to Ninja Gaidens and DMC. Also, Dark Souls is kind of an auto-win when they're both side by side.

I think SA was first in the poll and I can live with that. I honestly prefered Vice City but SA was probably the deepest GTA of all of them. It had the biggest world with the most stuff to do without that stuff seeming stupid (GTA IV). Vice City had the best lead of all the GTA games and probably the best characters though so I enjoyed playing it more. Also it had V-Rock.

Oh my god those polls are killing my hearth Things like ocarina of time > a link to the past I *might* understand but come on mario kart 64 was really not that good while the 1st one was one of the best game on snes (and I can guarantee you there were a LOT of good games on snes ;-))

Before I answer that, you need to recognize that there is a flaw with the general framework of these types of, loosely stated, statistics. That error would be due to a fundamental, yet slightly Cartesian principle.
When you or a community care enough to start overarching "Best Game in [X Genre]" polls, you'd assume that the opinions would involve a myriad of thought-out and analytic votes. As someone else mentioned though, that is a quixotic notion "empirically" proven by the fact that these types of threads end up turn into a pathos infested popularity contest. There is no incentive to do otherwise.
So the answer: the "hate against newer games" stems from the idea that just as in any other form of art (novella, film, art, literature, and music) there are generational gaps that exist in between successive decades of incredible gaming experiences. However, the difference is that (assuming we call games a form of art, which I am obliquely tending to do so) the history of gaming has an unprecedented rate of growth. The difference between an 1972 Pong game and a 1990s Pokemon game is staggering, and a 2000 game vs 2010 more still.
These salient differences over time simmer and solder out into two very broad different groups of gamers. Classic and new gens. These are not cemented, rule of thumb - but your post begs the question that the trend is clearly there.
And it's totally understandable: newer gamers don't have to, and are in fact perhaps disinclined to play older games since the antiquated graphics, chip-tunes, and gameplay are a turnoff to their newer toys (hint of my rhetorical disdain?). Why naturally default to a clearly mechanically inferior experience of Earthbound when there's of a fancy, garish Skyrim waiting with 1900 x 1200 resolution on my moniter?
So. these newer gamers spout their unfailing loyalty for these newer games when they've never played before unforgettable classics (keep in mind, I did not say this was an absolute rule as that is obviously false - me already being an example while I write this). Thus you see, oh my, "heated" arguments between people who've posted things without thinking them through. I really do not see the reason for giving an example: a quick google search of "Top 10 Videogames" of anything should do the talking.
This, in turn ends up turning the entire event in question into the aforementioned popularity contest. "But isn't that inevitable?" Of course, but it defeats the purpose if you've never played any of the other games just like another art's polling would be if you said The Fountainhead was the most influential work of literature of the 20th Century when you've never read Ulysses.
It's really quite simple. Since we compose of something we affectionately call the internet, we are often times to crass and boorish to express these different epochs and tastes in a equally fashionable manner.
"So... are you saying playing a newer game automatically discounts me as some spontaneously supercilious loser?"
Of course not, or else the different demographic wouldn't exist in the first place. The entire glob of gamers with historical decency would be automatically subsumed and cease to exist with the times, leading into an Ozymandias effect.
"Does that mean I HAVE to play older games?"
Well obviously no, but I'd argue if you want to have a deeper appreciation of gaming, then most definitely. Personally, it still irks me that I have friends who call themselves judicious defenders of gaming culture when all they do is play Call of Duty all day. I have MULTIPLE friends in college who have never played Ocarina of Time for fuck's sake...
Is the RTS bracket supposed to be a joke and Evil Genius is a game? O_O After looking at all the other brackets. Yeah, I think I'll just stay out of this one. Was never a big fan of what do you think is best when it comes to trivial things like this.
Some weird omissions, like personally I would have voted for Resident Evil 1, Final Fantasy 4, and Civilization 5. Lack of Diablo 3, MK3, and SSBB also makes no sense to me.
Also, "Best DotA" is really a silly category since they're the same game.

+rep to you sir for putting this all together. This must have been an immense amount of work and i havent been able to do all this correctly. Its still super hard to do it right for everyone.
for example: In my opinion total war should be competing in turn-based strategy. It has rts battles and turn based strategy so maybe even compete in both brackets?

I feel like there's a general hate against the big and new titles that are coming out... Is it just me or?
And it's totally understandable: newer gamers don't have to, in fact perhaps disinclined to play older games since the antiquated graphics, chip-tunes, and gameplay are a turnoff to their newer toys (hint of my rhetorical disdain?). Why naturally default to a clearly mechanically inferior experience of Earthbound when there's of a fancy, garish Skyrim waiting with 1900 x 1200 resolution on my moniter?
So. these newer gamers spout their unfailing loyalty for these newer games when they've never played before (keep in mind, I did not say this was an absolute rule as that is obviously false - me already being an example while I write this).
"Does playing a newer game automatically discount me as some spontaneously supercilious loser?"
Well put! It's also interesting that the effects that you describe should are even stronger in TL, TL having undergone the transition from BW into SC2.

Yea, Raiden was a bit of a flop-dick, but 2 is arguably better than 4.
Dude, just reading through the polls made me SO EXCITED. I want to go back and play Kirby's Dreamland, hit up Super Mario World and practice my ***ing wave dashing in melee.
I absolutely cannot decide between Half Life and Half Life 2. Half Life has some kinda magic, but Half Life 2 is beautiful. I remember when it came out I was blown away at the realness of the water, and running into G-Man again. So sweet.

I was stuck on that for a while, too. It's one of those where picking the older one puts Half-Life at a disadvantage against newer games, which Half-Life 2 would just blow out of the water. I want to see Perfect Dark going deep - Goldeneye hipster votes will probably beat out PD, though.
EDIT: Since Fallout Tactics: BoS is in the TBS category, I feel like it crushes most of those games effortlessly. It rather seamlessly blended RTS and TBS better than many similar games.

I would agree with that because both stories made some truly horrendous decisions so it comes down to gameplay and the gameplay in 2 was just signifigantly better. I would even say the gameplay in 2 was better than 3 because I really considered MSG3 at its best when I was in the bases actually. The jungle stuff was fun in its own way but I had the most fun in the main facilities.

I'll just say it.... you mention that there is no "best" game yet all the polls are like "best game within a specific IP". It's very contradictory. Example I would say Megaman 2+3 (possibly 9) probably the pinnacle of Megaman games, but neither are listed. Same with Hitman (no silent assassin?)But whats more is that in your Legend of Zelda category, Alltp and OoT are very different experiences and aren't really translatable. If you wanted to compare say LoZ and Alltp, I could maaaaaybe get behind you as they function the same, but even then, they are still very different beasts.
Also, what are flight sims and sim-city games doing in the same category...???!?!?!? Not even comparable experiences.

Dwarf Fortress isn't even finished. Shit, it isn't even in beta, lol. Most of these categories are all over the place, so, whatever. Also, am I supposed to analyze something like Dwarf Fortress from the perspective that it may never be finished, in other words, what it could be? If that's the case, SC2 could be TL's favourite game.
Skyrim was honestly one of the most disappointing games I've ever played, while Oblivion and Morrowind are among the best games I've ever played. I am honestly dumbfounded by how it's above them.
These lists are horribly incomplete, If you want us to vote on all these game titles and genres please include all the versions. More then one occasion on this page I did not even bother to vote because you fail to include ,or dont care too, various titles ie; mario 64/RPG both missing, literally everyPokemon game excluding Gen1/2 is missing, amoung many others.
Was a cool idea but I think this needs more time and thought.

You make some very good points. In hindsight, I wish I had named the polls "Favorite XXX game," as that is what I'm more interested in, not "best game." I probably chose the word "best" because I had to write it about 30 times and it's shorter than "favorite." Also, I wish I had included Mega Man 2 in that poll, but it wasn't nominated in the previous thread, and I didn't think of adding it until after the poll was published. Also, you are right that perhaps ALttP should be separate from the other Zelda games, like how I separated Mario 64 from the other Mario games. These are some things that I wish I had done to improve the vote as much as possible, but since I did not, I hope it doesn't detract too much from the polling as a whole. After all, it is very hard to manage this flawlessly.
As for the simulation category, I made sure the flight sims and city-building sims were in different sub-brackets.

Mario 64 and Mario RPG are both included in the bracket already.
I voted on any I have played or experienced myself.
Golden Sun ftw
I also think I've played Gran Turismo 2 the most out of them, but wasn't on the list (Although I was 11 or something back then). I remember starting up 2 after 3(or 4), some years later and went like "I CAN COUNT PIXELS I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT BEFORE?". Graphic improvement went fast for my feeling
Sometimes I'm disappointed I can't run any of the newer installations like GT5 or that sequel to golden sun, due to not having a PS3 or Nintendo DS..
I don't get why you made a duped thread, from another thread. That was unsuccessful and was missing alot of games, because the OP basically shooed you away by saying "go make your own thread"..... Dont think it was a green light.

By the virtue of being larger, more complete and overall better? There's a lot more quality games on the market now, so it's much easier for Skyrim to be disappointing than it was for Morrowind to be disappointing when it came out.
Both Oblivion and Morrowind were mechanically and technically broken in ways that would be considered unforgivable today, and both of them got away with a lot by the virtue of just looking damn good (at the time) and merely having a full open world. Skyrim may be mediocre by today's standards, but at least it's functional design-wise and well executed.

I'm sorry, but people could nominate games for a month now in the last thread. And people did nominate games. A LOT of games. I simply compiled them and organized them in 16 genres to make a clean tournament. It's inevitable that a few games will be left out, but that's because nobody mentioned them. Also, Mario RPG is in the RPG bracket.
Also, I'd like to mention that the brackets are still malleable. If there is enough interest in any particular game that I've omitted, such as Sim City 4, I can make sure that Sim City 4 is in the bracket and it's first competitor is the winner from the Sim City poll today.

Simulation: Sim City Turn based strategy: HoMM3 atm (let's be honest, when we see HoMM, our brains automatically think HoMM3), though I very recently started playing Civ and that is a worthy game (I've only played the 3rd best in the series, according to the poll. People are always gonna bitch about "best games" lists or polls. Everyone has different tastes so things ARE going to be omitted

Even tho CoD1 and CoD2 are some of my favorite FPS games (and ez the best ww2 games) I gotta hand the multiplayer to CoD2 here. It's just so good, even today it's still strong. But I think CoD1 single player was more epic. I still remember in the beginning of the russian campaign when you get ashore from the boats with bullets flying over your head, every other man gets handed a rifle and you pulled the short straw so you have to crawl around waiting for a comrade to die so you can get your hands on a rifle. Good stuff.
Why is the bracket set to where the 1 seed will play the 2 seed in round 2? High seeds should always start on the outside and then move inside from there
wtf is going on in some of the polls? SF2>SF3? Seriously? Half-Life2>Half-Life? HL reinvented a whole new era of fps. The game was praised as the best game of 1998 by tons of magazines and fan votes (in the same year StarCraft was released!)
I maintain that Age of Empires 3 is the most underrated PC game of all time. The game brought so many new and unique aspects to RTS like auto building workers, shipment system, training stuff into groups at a time etc. All the different factions were very cool and unique (although not rly balanced) and the graphics at the time were superb.

I didn't make the brackets in the traditional sense. Instead, I tried to group games most similar to each other to face one another first. This probably resulted in many "favorites" competing relatively soon.

Nono you misunderstand: I wasn't calling the games bad or anything by themselves; I'm making the exaggeration that it's pretty much the same game every time.
Ahh yes, in that case I take any and all responsibility for implying that the CoD games are sub-par
I would say CoDs only real fatal flaw is its ADD style of storytelling where instead of pacing itself in leau of just massive battle after massive battle. The gameplay is overall sound though but I would favor CoD 4 over the later installments because CoD 4 was the only one of there modern shooters where it was possible to fail.
Wait, Halo 4 is getting the most votes (of the Halos)? I mean... I was really disappointed with it. And if newer versions are only at best slightly better than the predecessor, then doesn't that show just how good the old version was at the time, and that it was barely approved upon years later?
People might be better off just listing their top 32 games, you assign a point value such as #1 = 32 points and number 32 = 1 point, and then tally them up and when you get the top 32 make a bracket and go nuts. I'd actually say just end it with a top rankings, but a tournament can be fun so why not. But, series shouldn't be limited, and to be honest, video game genres are incredibly subjective and trying to push a certain game into a certain genre can be tricky. It's simply better to say "I like Super Mario Bros 3. better than Mega Man 2 and Braid" then trying to actually figure out of MM2 and Braid are actually platformers in the first place. AND, picking the genres you use is also absurdly subjective. "Stealth genre" ok, that's a bit of a stretch. But you know what genre tends to be definitive and you overlooked? Shmups.
I really think picking genres is a poor way to do it. Let the games stand on their own, and if the top 5 are all Mario and Zelda then so be it.

*cough* rightly so *cough*
Ahem, well I really must be on my way to Home Depot.
That may be sort of the case, but CoD1+2 at least were good and 'actual' full games that spanned more than 5hrs in total. Every CoD since MW2 and BLOPS has been boring and done little to nothing to improve or innovate upon the previous experiences.
MADDEN!!!! I wasted half a lifetime playing those games.
Fix the racing and sports brackets.
Excitebike over forza. How do you not list forza really? gran tourismo vs mario kart in the second round. lol doesn't even make sense Mario kart and gran tourismo are two of the top games there.
Under sports no Madden? no wii sports?
Classics? -Pong, freecell, Maijong?
Action- Prince of Persia? The movie sucked but the video game was fun.
Also, like Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 listed but not three. I thought three was better than both 1 and 2. In fact 3 is my favorite of the series.

If you have a tourney, it should be segmented into genres, that way games with similar experiences compete with eachother. I would never want Ultima IV to be competing with say, Quake III, as they are entirely different animals (and two games I enjoyed a lot).
Edit, if you then wanted to for fun put the winners of each bracket into a tourney, then that could be fun and interesting, but then the top 16 or 32 (or whatever appropriate number) that made it into the brackets would actually mean something.
How come so many people voted for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 instead of 5? 5 took everything 3 had and made it better (well, aside maybe campaign story), but from a gameplay point of view it is much much better once you get the hang of it.

3 is more iconic, I think. Also, with most classic games, my assumption is that people who are voting for the sake of voting may have only ever played the most iconic one out of all of them, or only heard from someone else that 3 is the best and don't actually have an opinion. For some of us, we pick one over the other because the sequel copied the formula from the one before it. Therefore, the success of the later game or it being better is only a result of the one that came first. HoMM 3 definitely improved more upon 1&2 than 5 improved upon 3&4. That in and of itself could be why people choose it over 5.
Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core was the best one, so i couldnt vote... And it kinda make me sad to see so many votes for Skyrim as the best Elder Scrolls game.

You could try and nominate it in the thread that the OP mentions. However, FF7 will probably end up crushing everything, anyway.

HoMM5 revamped the whole combat system and heavily reworked the skill system. The alternative unit upgrades that came with the second expansion allowed for even more varied playstyle. A ton of improvement in HoMM3 came from the Wake of Gods fan made expansion. Not to mention HoMM5 is much more balanced when compared to 3. Imo HoMM5 is the pinnacle of the series. Everyone who liked 3 should give it a try, but you need to read the fan manual first to really enjoy it .

So the RTS one is to find the second best RTS game?

The choice between Imperials and Stormcloak was made to seem more important than it really was, and at one point you could end up switching to the other side. Oblivion's engine was obviously trying to move the game away from being a skill based rpg (by that I mean the actual skills in the game) which for obvious reasons was appealing to a lot of people, but really just removed depth from the game and made it easy beyond belief. Skyrim came along and then dumbed the game down even further, removed any real benefits from choosing one race over another, further reduced the impact of skills and then took a leaf out of cods book and added perks, which ended up being boring as shit (to me at least).
For me, beyond the pretty graphics and dramatic introduction, the storyline and offshoots just felt bland and predictable, and in the end the joy of a game which seemed like an improvement over Oblivion quickly faded, and I was left with a game that felt quite substantially more shallow then its predecessor.

Well, I enjoy Skyrim partly for aesthetic reasons, as I really enjoy its snowy, alpine environment and rustic Nordic sensibility, so my judgement is somewhat skewed. With the two DLC's, though I hate them conceptually, Skyrim is really a lot of fun with lots of material. I give it a slight nudge over Oblivion.
Edit: Yeah, mods change everything, I don't really think its fair to include them lol

Mods do change everything, and a completely un-modded comparison would have all three a lot closer.
UPDATE: The first round of voting has begun! The list of polls may seem daunting, but this will be the largest block of voting in the tournament. I also made a few changes in the brackets to alleviate concerns that some people had, but all brackets are final as of now.

World of Warcraft is in the MMO bracket, but will not be voted for in Round 1. If you look at the brackets, I'm only holding polls on the left-most columns.
Nice to see Populous: The beginning in the poll. I think if someone ported that game into a modern game engine with some tweaking here and there, but keeping the core gameplay, you could get an incredibly good and competetive game, possibly a new esport title.
Europa Universalis 3 is a really epic and fun game, especially if u like history. I don't think a lot of people have tried it out. But you guys definitely should.
maybe already been posted (I didn't read the entire thread) but why on earth persona 3 instead of persona 4? persona 3 is a really good game for sure, but persona 4 is the penultimate game of the series. by far the most well-known and best reviewed (often cited as one of the best if not THE best rpg released on the PS2, which is basically the king of rpg consoles).

Yes it's sort of true. You play in third person but you can also play in first person with most guns. But that option was never really used (I am talking about Socom 2 and 1 since those are the last real Socom games). You can leave it as it is then

SOCOM had a third-person view as the default with 2 additional "zoom" levels. Zoom level 1 was first person view(there's a night-vision toggle on night maps in the FP view - I'll call that 1.5), only without the ability to see your gun. Zoom level 2 was scoped (if the gun had a scope). Most (if not all) people would agree that the third-person view is superior for running around (you can see your level of camouflage and see around corners - you can also see when enemies are close because your character will shoulder their gun).

SOCOM 2 > SOCOM 1 > Confrontation > SOCOM 3 & Combined Assault > SOCOM 4 imho. Confrontation was a failed attempt to revive the SOCOM franchise BUT they almost did it right. The idea was good, but they failed to execute it. For example: The menu system was shit, the armor and weapon selection was shit, they didn't have enough good maps, the rounds were too short,... I could go on, BUT it was better then SOCOM 3. SOCOM doesn't need cars and stuff like that. I could write an essay about the SOCOM franchise but that's for another thread I think haha.
Also don't get me started about SOCOM 4. SOCOM 4 isn't even worthy of the SOCOM name. It isn't a SOCOM game. It doesn't have the core mechanics the other SOCOM games had. I am not saying it is a bad game, it's just not a SOCOM game imo. But I respect your opinion though :p it's good to see that there are people on TL that have played SOCOM.

Well, it saddens me to see Perfect Dark, the evolution of Bond, being kicked down the way it is. Anybody making shameless hipster votes or just a-clicking Goldeneye, having never played Perfect Dark, is actually short-changing the better game. Sure, some people don't like the faster pace or sci-fi elements of PD, but for Christ's Sake, it had bots, all the best guns from bond, secondary fires, DK-Mode, paintball-mode and classic Bond levels like Facility 2.0(Felicity), Complex, Temple and I think that's about it. It was deeper and more complete. Anybody who played it without an expansion pack also needs to slap themselves if that is the basis for their prejudice.

I know the margin of victory has no influence on the following round, I just don't want to poll to be so 1-sided that people immediately dismiss the other game as not being a good contender, ya know? If people see that their preferred game just barely won perhaps they will intrigued as to the greatness of the other game that nearly beat it.
Perfect Dark is a beatiful game, anybody that played it says the same thing, so well made, everything was perfect and the music is so beatiful I even downloaded it my pc, best soundtrack of any video game.
Wow i'm surprised Empire Earth vs The Settlers 2 is so close. I liked Empire Earth but it wasn't my game of choice during that time but when The Settlers 2 came out i don't think there was something similar awesome. I think that game was super fantastic for its time and i would vote it over many other games. I believe though that many may not know it. I loved it back then.
How can you have Lineage 2, Guildwars 2, WoW, and Aion all binded together such that only 1 of them will go past round 4... that is so sad. Those are my top 5 MMOs... and where is LOTRO!?!??!?
Man... I feel like Call of Duty 4 is winning in the series poll because that's the only one people played It's all just nostalgia though, whichever game you have the best memories with you are going to vote for.
Goldeneye beating Perfect Dark is a true injustice.

I agree with this. Perfect Dark's soundtrack is AMAZING and probably the best soundtrack of any game (Advance Wars series comes close though).
Only voted in 8 of the genre polls and 8 of the series best polls; most of these games, I've never heard of, and many that I have heard of (metal gear, Call of Duty) I've never played more than ten minutes of.
I really have stuck to just a few video game series in my life... never really had the money to buy a hundred different games =(

That's the important part of that quote. Despite the first pat of my post, I HAVE played goldeneye, and I've never palyed perfect dark. Therefore I can't very well justify voting for it, can I? I think a lot of people are in my boat here - goldeneye had the james bond name power, so it sold to more kids.

It's a really close battle. I loved both games, and both are definately in my top 5 but I had to pick Goldeneye because I probably spent more time playing that game, and it was a more complete game IMO. I'd give both the single player and multiplayer 10/10 for goldeneye and in Perfect Dark. I'd only give the single player a 8-9/10 even if the multiplayer is slightly better (partly because of the addition of bots) I still have to give my vote to Goldeneye.

Man, all you people saying this makes me want to play Morrowind. I never got around to it.
It is undeniable though that Skyrim is better than Oblivion.
No it's not, I'm of the opinion that oblivion is better than skyrim
Why, if you don't mind me asking?
Ouch. Way to make everyone who likes Skyrim feel like a bit of a 'tard. I'm interested to know which one is genuinely better, having never played any of them ~except for Daggerfall.
Morrowind had epic landscapes, broken gameplay and dull quests. Oblivion had less epic landscapes, same broken gameplay and EVEN DULLER QUESTS (the dark brotherhood quests being the exception, if you play oblivion only do these and skip everything else). Skyrim has less broken gameplay, less dull quests and more epic landscapes than oblivion. Hence Skyrim and Morrowind> Oblivion. none of the games are any good for a person who actually likes to use his brain while playing.
Goes without saying this is only my opinion, but i'm very confident in this assesment. If you truly liked oblivion it was only cause your fantasy is brilliant enough that you don't really need a game to entertain yourself.

Eh, I played both (and liked perfect dark enough to make my first 360 buy the new PD).
PD was just a reiteration of Goldeneye with better graphics. Goldeneye was revolutionary and redefined FPS. In fact, before goldeneye, FPS on console really didn't exist.
PD is good, but it's definitely second to goldeneye. I'd put it on Timesplitters level.
You really put Rome Total War against Europea Universalis III against each other in the first round? lol
Also, some of these are fairly poorly classified. Day Z as a horror game?
HoN/LoL as strategy games?
This just isn't organized very well and isn't really a good idea to begin with; it's too general and long so most people aren't going to bother voting in all of these. It's hardly going to be "Teamliquid's Favorite" with sample sizes as small as it has now.

You can look at it differently too: IMO Perfect Dark has held up better over time. Goldeneye may have been more important to video gaming history, but there is zero reason play Goldeneye now except nostalgia. There have been tons of good FPS in the last 15 years based on Goldeneye's foundation except with better graphics, better controls, and more gameplay options.

Despite the name of the thread, my reason for doing this is not to determine Teamliquid's favorite video game. The purpose is to get hundreds of the greatest games ever made out there for people to see, remember, and discuss about.

These posts represent what this thread is trying to achieve. The tournament format is to catalyze discussion about any particular title that may be doing well or poorly.
Also, DayZ is classified as Survival Horror on Wikipedia, and has gameplay similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Hence, their immediate match-up. And I see MOBA titles as sub-genres of Strategy, which I think is reasonable.

The Lost Vikings is one of their best games IMHO and it was on Genesis/SNES. Brilliant puzzle game using mechanics that people still call "innovation" even in modern puzzle games (looking at you Trine).
The fact that you hadn't heard of their Genesis/SNES titles just meant they weren't crazy popular. Popularity is not always indicative of quality.

the results really show the age of a lot of voters. most aren't old enough to know how revolutionary some games were.
Depends on each voter's criteria. Are they voting how well they stand up today, how revolutionary they are, or how much fun they had playing them?
wolfenstein 3d beats out battlefield 2 in each of those categories, imo. the only logical reason battlefield 2 could get a vote is based on one fact only: they person voting doesn't know anything about wolfenstein 3D. I remember playing this game when it came out, and it was SOOOO much better than anything that was out there (looking back on it, I was 7 and I do not understand why my adult neighbor gave it to me and why my parents let me play that...). Yet for some reason Doom is the only one that gets remembered today (which was merely a slight upgraded and reskinned).
I must echo the "terrible execution" part. Where's civilization?? Or some of the classics like Galcon? Or the Portal series? I know they were nominated in the other thread, I nominated them..
Edit: Oh, I missed that each series gets a poll and then one of them is inserted into the bracket... Hmm, unconventional but fair. Props to you for that one. (But where's my Galcon and Angband, damn you! )

Angband is in the Role-Playing Games Bracket. However, I did not include Galcon, unfortunately. I think the reason is I've never heard of the game, and looking up "Galaxy Conquest" on Wikipedia and Google yielded no results. Also, your post was on page 13 (!!!) and by that time, I was kind of in a "screw that game" state of mind.

I can understand the frustration ^^
I'm still confused as to when one votes for what, though. Looking at the brackets, they look much better than the actual polls (that I was going by). So, even though you have the brackets, you could edit the OP to emphasize that people ought to be looking at those instead of the polls.
That's understandable. The first round was going to be confusing since not all games would be present in the polling. I think the next round of voting will go much smoother, since all games not yet eliminated will be available for voting.
UPDATE - 12/20/12: Let the second round of voting begin! With this round, all games will have been in a poll at least once. So let your voice be heard, your vote count, and may your favorite game continue on!

Resident Evil 4 beating Silent Hill 2 in the horror category is quite saddening. Resident Evil 4 was great but it's difficult for me to imagine someone playing through both games and concluding that RE4 is superior - particularly as a horror game.
RE4 vs SH2 and RE4 is winning in the horror genre? WTF? RE4 is a good action game, but as a horror game its pretty terrible. SH2 is far better, has no one here played SH2?
Aw, no Advance Wars.. humbug. My favorite game of all time didn't make the cut either (The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past,) but I understand the one game per series rule.

ugh, if tecmo super bowl loses to fifa 98..... there is no justice in the world.
I have a feeling Fifa is only winning because it's fifa. TSB is the game that season/franchise modes are based off of. it was the first game with legitimate stat tracking over the course of a season. not to mention it being one of the most balanced games of all time.

Yeah, TSB is pretty obviously the superior game, at least in my mind, but I'm not surprised with the poll result so far. At 24, I just barely squeak by with having been able to enjoy a lot of seminal games.

I only vote for the one game I played if I believe it is truely one of the greatest of all time. I did not vote in the Star Fox 64 vs Giants (Never got around to playing Starfox), but have voted for Worms Armageddon in all the polls it has been in despite not playing the others.

Thats awesome! Thanks for the effort, this is looking great. And I know its kind of early for this, but before I forget, it would be nice that when all is over to show the full list of all games with their respective placements! To have a better look of the whole picture. I mean, if you had this on mind already then nevermind (:

I have a feeling Fifa is only winning because it's fifa. TSB is the game that season/franchise modes are based off of. it was the first game with legitimate stat tracking over the course of a season. not to mention it being one of the most balanced games of all time.
Yeah, TSB is pretty obviously the superior game, at least in my mind, but I'm not surprised with the poll result so far. At 24, I just barely squeak by with having been able to enjoy a lot of seminal games.
And that's why these are polls looking for TL's most FAVORITE game, not what the better one is. To be fair every public poll ends up like this, but for once it's actually named correctly ^^

Which actually surprises me. TL tends to support competitive games. TSB is still played competitively. FIFA 98 isn't. I think this just has a lot to do with the international/european crowd that simply is unaware of how amazing TSB is. I mean, I'm a huge fanboy of FIFA series (I own every one of them), but TSB is on an entirely different level.

We all got here because of our passion for starcraft. Some came in 2004, some in 2008, some in 2010 with starcraft2, some don't even play anymore, but the thing we had in common remains - starcraft. Starcraft would've been overpowered.
I hope Total War can win the RTS genre. Although having played every single Total war ever released extensively, I'm always baffled by Rome getting the top spot of that series, Shogun 1 was far more revolutionary and Shogun 2 I've found a more polished enjoyable MP experience.

Eh, Rome was far more polished I feel.
It was like taking a crude diamond and cutting it to perfection.
This voting system is...not ideal. An unknown game, played by only few people can be better than a game played by millions, but it won't have the slightest chance here, just because people only playing the often played game will vote for the game they know, if it's good. Things like this should be done in a way that everyone posts how good he thinks the games he played were (in a x out of 10 points fashion, for example), next the mean value for each game will be calculated, and last, some kind of correction, dependant on the times, a game was voted for must be made, since the mean value alone would probably prefer niche-games, only played by people who like them. I'm no statistician, but probably some of the community are - they should know how this is done best, I think there's this bayesian estimate, but I didn't understand much, when I just read about it on wiki...
Edit: I mean, at least if the purpose of this thread is to rate games (I really would like to see, if there are some games I have to play, that I don't know of...), and not just a comparison between few, well known, much played, always on top and mostly newer games. If you go deep into that game, you'll find that not even modders can repair the crucial flaws in AI and diplomacy system. Otherwise modders did a good job to make the game enjoyable.

This explains alot. I got so MAD when I looked at some brackets^^. Maybe if this is redone in a few years a fairer system should be implemented.
This collision of games feels most weird of all to me, can't wait to see who is gonna take it^^.
arcanum,virtua fighter,Quake 3
Sad to see 3 of my favourits go so early. I have to admit I didn't know the games arcanum and vf were up against, so I should probably go check them out! As for people voting UT over Quake 3: stfu noobs. Even though it hurts to see them go I can accept that.
Freelancer over Privatee
This is bullshit. Not that Freelancer is a bad game, no, not at all. But I feel ashamed to be part of a community as tasteless as ours. How can a soulless remake win over one of the most atmospheric, deep and rich games there ever was? HOW?
THPS 3 over Skate 3?
Are you kidding me? DO NOT GET me wrong. I grew up with THPS. THPS 2 is the reason I started skating. I played through THPS 3 so often that I unlocked EVERY extra character without cheatcodes (thats about 1 million times). Now I do realise that most of you arn't consoleros, but fuck you. One minute spent with any game of the skate frenchise and you just have to realise it is the best capturing of a real life sport over to a virtual reality ever. Ever!
Skyrim over Vampire the Masqerade
I just was really mad when I saw this, now I realise it ain't bloodlines. Why isn`t Bloodlines in the votes? Bloodlines would kick skyrim's ass anyday. Go, play it, get it, install the most recent patch. Yes this game is still patched by a die hard fan community. Bloodlines is the Twilight of Computergames for vampire freaks, if Twilight would be good and read by men instead of teenage girls too dumb for the hunger games.

I haven't played Evil Genius, so Dungeon Keeper 2 over that I agree on. But other than that, there is not a single round one vote I agree on. LoLs. Maybe my taste is to weird.

So the RTS one is to find the second best RTS game?
Look what I fucking read a few days ago (published Dec 14, 2012)
I've never heard of their number 1 game, and several of those games are turn based strategy so... yeah that list sucks.
Now that I think about it, they probably insulted Starcraft so that angry people would post their dumb list on forums and spread it for them. Any "top n" list that requires you to manually click through every page to reach the end is just trying to generate ad revenue. It probably took them an hour tops to write the whole thing and it will net them a lot of traffic.
Starcraft being better than CoH is EXTREMELY debatable. Personally, while SC is more of "my cup of tea" I'd readily embrace CoH as the better game overall.
And fuck yeah Dota 2 smacks LoL, TL community knows where it's at!
Makes me want to vomit my guts out that OoT is facing shadow of the colossus so early. SotC is a better game than almost every other adventure game on the list.
If Deus Ex doesn't make the final then I will know for sure that the collective opinion of TL is not to be trusted when it comes to video games.
Oh god...more vomit reactions available to me: the fact that TL has chosen STALKER over Resident Evil 4...that's galling. And the fact that obviously the majority of people who voted in CoD haven't actually played CoD 2. Which is about 100 x better than every other CoD and should be an obvious choice for the best in the series.
Instead of a contest to find out TL's favourite video game, this is more a test or a case study to find out how many good games TL netizens have actually played, or maybe even the average voting age. For example if Dota 2 or WoW win the contest, we can assume the average TL voter has not played many of the video games on the list. It kind of highlights the problem with the statement 'all opinions are equal'. That is only the case if everyone is equally informed. Unfortunately on most matters of opinion this is not the case.

Vampires the Masquerade 2: Bloodlines was posted by me and at least one other in the original thread, quite early, even, but it must have been overlooked, or so...don't know...and yes, that was one of the games, I was talking about.
I don't really understand why Fallout 3 was chosen to represent the Fallout series instead of Fallout 2. I get how Ocarina of Time would be the obvious choice for Zelda representation for example, and Final Fantasy VII for Final Fantasy's participation, but Fallout 3 for Fallout? It wasn't even made by the people behind the first two games. Its only advantage would be appealing to fps nuts (but they would probably prefer a more action oriented game.)
My favourites, DQ3 and MMX are up against some tough competition. Not that I expected DQ3 to win against anything. But dang, MMX is my fav SNES game and I can't even complain about it losing.

Deus Ex did more for the genre maybe, with choosing how to tackle problems yourself. But i feel that it's more a first person RPG then a stealth game. I feel like MGS is more of an stealth game, and had a way more interesting story IMO.
But yeah.. Deus Ex shouldn't have been placed in the stealth genre to be honest.

Deciding which bracket to place Deus Ex was difficult for a few reasons. First, I've never played the game, so I could not decide based on personal experience. Second, based on what I do know about the game, I did not think many games in the Action, FPS, or RPG brackets shared a similar experience that Deus Ex offers. I felt that the stealth games did offer a more comparative experience. Third, seeing Deus Ex as a hybrid between these genres, the former 3's brackets are already pretty saturated, while the latter's bracket is the smallest in the tournament. Putting Deus Ex in Stealth helped even out the bracket sizes a little bit. But I admit, it was a difficult decision for me.

UPDATE - 12/22/12: Round 4 begins now! This round is cool because several genres are in their final poll, including Casual, Classics, Fighting, Horror, Racing, Simulation, and Sports. Be sure to vote for your favorite!
HoMM3 vs Civ 4, wow. HoMM3 is one of my fav games ever (maybe 2nd behind BW) but I'll sit this one out. I haven't played Civ 4, I've only played Civ 3 and that game was glorious. I hear Civ 4 is even better, and I'm planning on picking it up during this steam sale
I wonder how many votes (in general, not just for this matchup) come from people who have only played one of the two games so they auto-vote the one they played without being able to compare the two games.

DMC4 was a great hack and slash imo. A great, yet mindless, bloodbath.
D2 v BG2 is such a heartbreaking dilemma for me. BG2 is the better, more refined game, in so many ways. Yet, I spent so much more time mindlessly hacking away at monsters in D2. My mind tells me to vote BG2, my heart tells me D2.

Try Civ 5, I thought Civ 2 was the best Civ until Civ 5 came out. I'm not an entirely regular fan of the series, though, but Civ 5 removed some annoying mechanic experiments and took out the silly stack v. stack warfare.

I agree exactly.
Rome didn't improve on the AI of either Shogun 1 or Medieval 1. That was the make or break defining feature of the Total war franchise. It has excellent mechanics, expansive campaigns and great cinematic feel to it but the AI was/is dumb as a door knob.
Most people entered the franchise at Rome, but for those of us who already played through previous games for 1000's of hours it did not keep me enthralled. I played my first campaign on the hardest difficulty and hardest battle AI and simple walked through the entire campaign as the Greek Cities. It's simply not a challenge once you know how to defeat the AI in total war. Now latter Total war Games haven't done any better with the AI, but at least with the most recent addition, Shogun 2 (and Fall of the Samurai) the Multiplayer experience is a whole lot more enjoyable.
I actually can't sit through single player campaigns of Total war anymore. I just go straight to MP.
Pokemon is beating Chrono Trigger and Diablo 2 is beating Baldur's Gate fucking 2. Don't get me wrong, D2 is a fantastic game in it's own right, but it doesn't come anywhere near the depth and polish of BG2. Then again, that shouldn't really surprise me, since F3 was voted to be the best Fallout just a few days back.
It seems like people are just voting on the games they played. So if someone never played Chrono Trigger, but played Pokeon Red, he will vote on Pokemon despite not knowing what the other game even is. This is the only way I can explain what's going on.
Of course, it's a popularity vote. The game with the biggest pop culture is probably going to win because more people have heard of it/played it. Millions of people know more about Pokemon than Chrono Trigger.
CT Is one of my favorite games of all time, regardless. I love Chrono Cross too. RIP.

The best game I've played is Fallout 2. The only reason Fallout 3 got more votes must be because people are too young and only played Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I think we should only vote if we actually played all games in the series-poll. Otherwise the polls wont show what theyre ment to show. I suggest that we all opt to vote only when we can compare the games in question.

SC is a competitive game. People who like SC will tend to like competitive games more than single player experiences. Pokemon has a multiplayer competitive aspect. CT and FF7 don't.
D2, same deal. Also it's a Blizzard game
Actually, now that I spend more than 5 seconds thinking about it, your explanation makes more sense. But hasn't everyone played FF7?
Some of these current poll results are even worse than before. Real 'I don't want to live on this planet anymore' results. But a few are acceptable. Worst are Baldur's Gate losing to D2, Rome TW losing to WC3, DK2 losing to Dota 2. That said I'm pleased GTA is beating Batman, Monkey Island beating GF, Melee beating Tekken 3. It also warms my heart to see CS beating Team Fortress 2. So there is some sanity in TL at least.
Also, in stealth, I would take Thief II and Hitman Blood Money over MGS any day. And as mentioned before Deus Ex shouldn't have been in stealth but meh...I would still have it reaching the finals of RPG, Adventure, FPS or Stealth. It's that good.

I realize having a played a game and liked it makes you want to vote for it... but come on! bg2 is my candidate for best game ever, and that's having played about a billion awesome games in my life.
BG 2 is an awesome game. That said I only did it for one playthrough whereas I played D2 for years. Personally I think Chrono Trigger should win the whole thing, but I already knew this poll was just going to make me rage when Perfect Dark got stomped by Goldeneye.

Ew, you make it sound like PD is the classic quality game and Goldeneye is the ripoff. When in actual fact it's the other way round. PD was a rip off of Goldeneye made to appeal to kids.
Mods please just close this thread... The people on this site are idiots - I like Pokemon as much as the next, purchase every iteration, and appreciate how revolutionary it was but..
I was totally dumbstruck when I saw Legend of Dragoon in the poll. I mean it's obviously not gonna beat Kingdom Hearts cause KH is way more popular, but LoD was such a great game. Best RPG I ever played, and my favorite game of all time :D so much nostalgia
edit

Final Fantasy VII was the only one in the poll, it lost against Pokemon R&G. I'm guessing there's only one game per franchise in the poll.

I didn't say anything about it being a ripoff and personally don't think that should factor in at all for this particular poll. For me PD is basically Goldeneye with a ton of cool stuff added like co-op, counterco-op, the awesome shooting range thing, bots, and challenges. Stuff that even modern games lack.
UPDATE - 12/23/12: Let round 5 begin! Several more genres are in their final brackets today, including Adventure, First-Person Shooter, Massive-Multiplayer Online, Real-Time Strategy, and Turn-Based Strategy. Vote for your favorite!
Why would anyone choose between those two. The best 2D Mario (Well arguably its only barely better than Mario 3 - if that) and the best 3D Mario. Its like having to choose between Protoss and Terran.
As much as I hate it - I have to go with the longevity of SM64. I might pick up World and play it again, but 64 just keeps being fun to explore.
If Chrono Trigger lost to a Pokemon game then the poll is officially just a stomping ground for people at least one or two years too young to appreciate a good story in 1995 (if not now).
But you never see the right game win a poll like this. All you need to do is take a quick look at the history of the GameFAQs polls to confirm that. It's sad pretty much every year. Not that I've bothered to check in the last six or seven lol.
p.s. the greatest game is still Romeo vs. the Pie Devil. Too bad all that's left of it is a shitty flash port with the wrong music.
Tekken 3 beat Guilty Gear. Diablo 2 beat BG2. Silent Hill 2 and System Shock 2 are out. Dark Souls beat Demon's Souls. Ninja Gaiden beat Devil May Cry.

The interesting thing to me is that 95% of the comments are contrary to the voting, which tells me that there's a "community" side to TL comprised of the people who post/lurk a lot, and then there's a big side of TL that just uses it for news and streams, and clicks polls like this without reading the comments. The people who are more ingrained in the TL community seem to be much older and much more sensible on average.

Yeah there's been some sad results so far...though I can't say I agree with everything :D Dark Soul's for me was much more enjoyable than Demon Souls but I loved both. I can see how some people might put Diablo 2 over BG2 though I wouldn't in 100 years, if they didn't like/play that type of game back in the day then its a easy choice to pick D2 which they probably played.
I'm really sad Planescape: Torment went out so early =/ I would put that even over BG2 and definitely over NWN...
This thread makes me want to revisit a lot of games >.<

Very good point. Thanks for making it. It's hard to remember all the time but TL is kind of like the whole London rats thing. They say whenever you see a rat there are 10 underground that you can't see. I guess that is the same with TL. Whenever you see a poster there are 10 lurkers or casual users. And yeah, they probably care less about video gaming and have a shallower appreciation of gaming/ have played less games.
Although it is very sad, however you look at it, that so few people have played Baldur's Gate II or Deus Ex. And Chrono Trigger apparently. (Wtf)

Or it's that the people who are posting are butthurt and want to vent their frustration, or they want to raise awareness for the game they want to win because the game is behind in the poll.
I wonder if the solution would be to have this entire contest only voted on by PMs or posts in this thread. Then we could have the active community's opinion rather than the aberration we have come to see here :O.
A few games that really deserved it didn't make it through (BG2, whyyyy)
Sooo glad to see HoMM III made it so far! My favourite installment in one of my favourite strategy series (turn-based in this case, but w/e)
Also thought it was fun to compare WC3 to DotA 2, considering WC3 means you get to play WC3 + custom modes...including DotA xD Couldn't say no to WC3, even without DotA... made for a great part of my teens.
Finally, sad to see Curse of Monkey Island isn't making it through I know I'll be shot down, OoT is a great game, but Monkey Island...just too awesome to pass

Well, I would argue that the sensible and mature thing would be to not vote in a category if you don't know BOTH games. That would dramatically alter the results.

I voted for Pokemon over Diablo 2, didn't care for D2, but frankly they're not even close to the same type of game. Pokemon and Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, are close enough to be compared, which is why the Pokemon win is so baffling.

I honestly don't understand what is so strange about people voting for D2. It is one of the most played games in the history of gaming. Almost all of my friends have spent insane amounts of time on it. I've played it on and off since it was released. It is an amazing game in its own right.
Now, Pokemon. That's a game that people like mostly based on nostalgia. Take a look at the gameplay for instance. For a game that is all about battles, it has one of the worst battle systems ever. I mean, it's a dumbed down version of JRPGs. and JRPGs already have simplistic battle systems. It's usually Attack, Magic, Item and then some type of special attack like a limit break. Pokemon doesn't even have that.
One thing is for certain. If I picked up a Pokemon game today, I would be bored out of my mind with the repetitive, simplistic gameplay. I would not enjoy the silly escapism as much as I did when I was younger. D2 however, would still kick ass.

They're both dumbed down in RPG terms.Sure D3 was worse since it doesn't even have points to spend in the various tech trees but D2 is still very dumbed down for an RPG, hence why so many people don't even classify it as an RPG.

Well it's the only final that's legit imo. Zelda OOT and Monkey Island are both top 10 games and genre defining masterpieces. Many of the games in the finals are pathetic (NFS underground wtffff).
Also it gives me some consolation that the game that beat RTW is going to beat Dota 2. That game is barely an RTS.

You're obviously no true pokemon master then. I bet you didn't even know the official pokemon rap, or own the sticker collection book and collect all 151. Replaying pokemon red/blue is no more repetitive and 'boring' than D2 btw. Replaying Act 1 is fairly easy but it becomes a mission to replay Acts 2 and 3. Especially if you are used to speed running lol.
In a perfect world, Baldur's Gate 2 should have won this poll, or at least make the finals. Kinda sad it got matched up vs Diablo 2 which is super popular, not really an rpg.

Hmmmm....well, honestly I don't think OoT is a more revolutionary game. WoW was a huge step towards gaming becoming mainstream, and a big reason why SC2 is so successful. But I think we're voting on entertainment value, not community value.
And honestly I hope Tetris wins, it's possibly the most unique game ever made, and anyone can play it for hours at a time.

There was. It lost to Ocarina of Time.
Quite a few disappointing results. THPS3 being in the finals just to name the biggest one. There still are some worthy games tho. Hoping for a HoMM3 vs. CS finals. Probably not gonna happen tho.
Regarding older stuff / poll results in general: - How the hell is Deus Ex in a "stealth" genre? It's a RPG people! Much, much more of an rpg than Pokemon or Diablo. - A lot of weird results in the rpg section overall. Fallout 3 best Fallout? Seriously? All the people who didn't play any other Fallout game must have voted. Games like Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, KotOR loosing quite early on to games barely worth being considered rpgs is sad as well. Just because something has a leveling mechanic doesn't make it a rpg. - Golden Eye>Bioshock? Stalker>System Shock 2? Holy fuckballs. - Results seem like a huge nostalgia trip. I wonder how recently (if at all in some cases) people played the games they voted for.
I'm getting really tired of people overusing the word nostalgia. Some of the games I played a long time ago I knew were simply amazing games at the time. That is how I felt when playing them, not when remembering playing them.
It is not nostalgia that is dictating these results, that is quite obvious. It is simply the most casually popular games winning, because the largest number of people played them.

WoW was a huge step towards gaming becoming mainstream
Or as I'd like to say, WoW was a huge step towards gaming being ruined.
Yeah, I'm on the Counterstrike wins it all! Especially since you didn't specifically say 1.6, source, promod or GO which means all the players from all those games can and should vote for it.
1.6 took over my childhood and CS:GO is slowly taking over now x_x
I don't think nostalgia has anything to do with the polls being the way they are. I don't think the nostalgia argument has ever worked. The games winning right now are extremely popular and not just because they're old -- they've been around in pop culture forever. Of course Pokemon is going to beat CT. I could ask my whole family if they've heard of Pokemon before, and all would say yes. If I asked about Chrono Trigger...none of them will have heard of it.
There aren't Chrono Trigger trading cards, not any mass merchandising I've ever seen of it, and it certainly wasn't advertised even a 1/50th that Pokemon has. This is a popularity contest, not necessarily a 'best quality game' contest.

When I updated the poll, Super Mario 64 was ahead by 1 vote. I even made sure this was the case after the update. I guess some people looked in the spoiler after I updated the OP and voted for Mario Kart, thereby giving it the lead.

Using that analogy I can say they all came from Warcraft 1 or The Lost Vikings for that matter.
Eh? Warcraft 1 didn't have a map editor bro.War2 had an editor but it was very basic and only good for melee maps - no triggers etc.Starcraft 1 editor was very advanced for it's time, DOTA was originally a starcraft 1 map as well but this is all pretty well known stuff.

Apparently the Starcraft editor wasnt advanced enough since DOTA sucked back then (if it even existed. I have never heard of it back in Starcraft). Dota and td´s got perfected in the WC3 engine and thus brought out to the masses or the 99%. You are the 1%.
Whats next? will you claim that WoW also came from Starcraft?

The iterations of dota from eul to icefrog is so different that it may as well be two seperate genres, the difference between dota and aeons of strife is even larger. That said homm 3 is pretty sick.
Was SC kicked off because it would of easily won? I Would always consider SC the great game series ever with BW being the best one in the bunch. After that WoW was amazing before the Lich King. I'm currently playing Hitman Absolution along with BETA HOTS. Hitman is pretty good... HOTS needs some balance but its duh amazing.

I agree that DotA originated in WC3 but you'd have a hard time arguing the same thing for tower defense games. The amount of lurker, sunken, bunker defense games that were out before WC3 was even announced is tremendous. Matrix D, Line Defense, the list goes on. WC3 certainly did introduce different elements into it through the upgrading of towers and whatever else (only ever played one TD game in wc3), but it also changed the AI so units moved through the mazes more smoothly which could be a good or bad thing depending on preference.

I loved the Final Fantasy games... but they were the first RPGs I got into. Turns out there's other titles in the genre, and while I appreciate the Final Fantasy games for getting me into RPGs in general, I have no desire to play them again. Ever. I'm a huge fan of Western RPGs instead, I would have way preferred to see titles like Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1 & 2, Morrowind, and Deus Ex make it farther in the brackets. I think all of those listed are better than even the best JRPG.
That said, Final Fantasy 6 and 7 are still better than Pokemon.

Um, it had a great campaign (the last RTS that had one from my memory) with a good story that spawned an MMO, which then proceeded to trash the story. It had a solid multiplayer that was played professionaly for a quite some time. It also was a mappers wet dream at the time and it has a lot of great custom maps. Most notably it evolved the starcraft aos map into what is called the moba genre nowadays.
And you can't objectively call the cs franchise the best fps of all time in a universe where quake exists.

"Easier game" ehhhh...I don't know if I would agree with that. Even at the highest level, War3 pros never really reached the skill cap, whereas I think BW was a lot more figured out. Granted though, there were a lot more BW professionals than War3 professionals. It's always difficult to compare difficulty between games that are so different.
Anyway, even if you do want to claim Starcraft is a better franchise than Warcraft, which is fine...Starcraft wasn't in the poll. War3 is probably the closest thing so it makes sense that a lot of people here would vote for it.

The TFT storyline was pretty good tbh; one of the only games to pull off the protagonist turning from good to evil in a non-cringeworthy, Star Wars-prequels-y way.
I is a cool poll but the brackets seem to be a bit broken, there is now way that voting in in a matchup like Dungeon Keeper versus Dota2 is gonna be fair, not to mention the bias on a Dota2 forum. Otherwise a really nice job.

No idea about souri, but ff7 writing is terrible. Anyway good writing doesn't count much apparently. That being said war3 and cs are very good games, I'm glas they got this far.
Somewhat surprised to see Dungeon Keeper 2 trounce its predecessor so decidedly. Personally, I always felt that Bullfrog transitioned to full 3D just a little too early, resulting in DK2 being needlessly clunky in various areas. The first game in the series just felt more solid to me. That said, I still play DK1 every few years, whereas I haven't been able to get DK2 to run properly after saying goodbye to Windows ME back in 2001, so I'm probably a bit biased in that regard. Suppose that most people never bothered with the expansion to DK1 either - the maps in the expansion pack were quite a bit more challenging than most of the maps in the original.
Why not include Super Mario World 2 in the series' poll? I realize that it's quite different from the main games, but so is Super Mario Bros 2. Personally, I feel that SMW2 is the most finely crafted platform game out there, but given that it was overshadowed by the Donkey Kong Country series it probably doesn't matter a whole lot for the final results anyway - it never became as popular as I think it should have been :-p
But here we are, bickering over stuff that has already been eliminated and pretty much completely subjective, too. For the current round, I'll be voting for Warcraft 3, which I found to be an enjoyable game. Never really got into Zelda OoT, because for some reason the first generation 3D games just don't do it for me. Should to situation be different with Link to the Past having made the finals, then my vote would probably be different ...

WC3 is a good RTS that isn't as good as BW or AoE 2. OoT has no comparison, it is one of the biggest 'steps forward' in gaming that's ever been made. THe sublime transition to 3d perfectly executed, a long and absorbing adventure. As someone who played equal time in WC3 and OoT, there is no way in my right mind I could justify picking WC3.

Warcraft 3 had an incredible storyline!
You talk about 2D->3D, but Warcraft 3 set the bar for how 3D RTS games out to be, defining the future of a genre.
The big quandary for me is that I think OoT is the better core game, but are we also supposed to factor in custom maps? Because if so, I think War3 is the best game of all time. You could spend the rest of your life playing nothing but War3 customs and never get bored, not even including DotA.

Haha, well maybe it's the fact that I don't think any RTS has been as good as broodwar, and that the 3D transition actually destroyed the genre. WC3 just represents a step down for me, whereas OoT is one of the biggest steps up ever. It was not only one of the great watershed moments in gaming, it is also supremely replayable. And why are you even talking about story for WC3, pretty much any respectable RTS can compete with the story of that game. WC3 was about the multiplayer and more specifically the custom maps.

How I thought of it, was to treat WC3 custom maps as a tool available that wasn't in OoT, but I didn't include the actual custom maps in my decision.
It is not really the story originality, the way they implemented it means I got really soaked and involved in the story and lore from Warcraft, there was a certain atmosphere and feeling that Warcraft brought to to the story.

you don't like wc3 music? wtf? i have the sound track because it was so good, only a couple of other games have had better sound tracks (original C&C comes to mind)
OOT is a fine game, but I never thought of it as much more than other Nintendo Games. And in terms of pure fun It's not even close to one of my favorite Nintendo games. I understand that there's a lot of nostalgia there for some but a lot of it to me seems like hive-mind hype. Not that people don't love the game, but everyone in a society loves it so everyone blows it up and holds it to a mythical standard. Where I lived in my childhood (Sweden/Cyprus), no one held it to an especially high regard, everyone was more multi-player oriented. People thought it was good, liked the music, but that's where it stopped. People weren't buying Nintendo magazines and getting obsessed about it.
On the other hand Warcraft 3 was a culture defining game for me. Anyone who spent a lot of time in LAN cafes during it's peak probably knows what I mean by this. It was so much more than just 'a' game. And that's not even counting how exciting the game was on a competitive level (Which I don't care if people think it's an inferior RTS, I still had more fun watching and talking about it), or the quality of the storyline and the characters, which are more memorable than any other RTS. It is a game which popularized and is responsible for multiple genres.
Greykarn said a couple of weeks ago the most played game at Inferno Online (biggest LAN cafe in Stockholm) is still Warcraft 3.
For me, it's incomparable. Warcraft 3 vs Half-Life might be a fair fight, if all of Half-Life's spawns are included.
On this forum I would not be surprised to see WC3 take it.
With that said, WC2 was one of my favourite games EVER. WC3 on the other hand, while fun, I couldn't really get into. It had several RPG elements that made it a less than ideal RTS in terms of RNG of items and such. I did have a lot of fun playing through the story, and thought it was all-round an excellent game, but I never really wanted to play it on any sort of competitive level. Customs were really fun. This is of course all personal opinion. The game itself I would rate as an excellent game - and definitely top 10 in my RTS list, if not edging out top 5.
Zelda on the other hand I thoroughly enjoyed. I see a lot of people throwing around the word "over-rated' here, and that isn't really fair to the game. Zelda had some exceptional game play. Some of the best seen on the N64, and probably made the best use of the graphical 3D engines that the N64 had to offer. The story, while only "alright", pushed along the game quite well. The game was vast enough and allowed for a lot of exploring, and the unique aspects of the way time travel and the ocarina were handled were awesome. The game was absolutely excellent. There is nothing over-rated about it, it's a fantastic game.
I voted Zelda out of the two. Zelda is on my top 5 of all time, though there were a few other games on the list that I enjoyed more.

Well it didn't. A similar game type was made in BW. That hardly makes it Dota.
The entire genre owes most of the mechanics to Warcraft or things that were invented within that engine.
WC3/WC3:TFT, it was my best RTS so far by a long shot. I am competent at sc2, but it was quite magical to do very well on Azeroth for so long. Fun times indeed, WC3 was a no brainer vote, although Zelda Ocarina of Time was cool on N64 back when I was a youngster, "heh heh". 25 yrs. seems like a grandfather in the gaming world.
Edit: I didn't follow this thing from the beginning but where the heck is Starcraft? Lmao. Hilarious on TL no less.

I agree War2 was a better game than War3.I voted Zelda, it will be an abomination if War3 won best game on TL.... cmon people!

Well if you say that Warcraft 2 was better than Warcraft 3 then i just say that A Link to the Past was better then Ocarina of Time. Subjectivity is a bitch.
While I love both WC3 and OOT they are no where near my favorite games. Chrono Trigger, Starcraft, Half-Life, Castlevania sotn These should be fighting in the finals.

It was so much more than just 'a' game. And that's not even counting how exciting the game was on a competitive level (Which I don't care if people think it's an inferior RTS, I still had more fun watching and talking about it), or the quality of the storyline and the characters, which are more memorable than any other RTS. For me, it's incomparable. Warcraft 3 vs Half-Life might be a fair fight, if all of Half-Life's spawns are included.
I could argue for either side, but I'll go ahead and argue for OoT since nobody is putting forth a good argument.
OoT is one of the deepest games ever made. It was from an era where developers actually put time and love into their games. It has quite possibly one of the most iconic soundtracks, a classic but still masterfully told story, and characters that are recognizable but still relateable (unlike, say, Mario). Even though you say War3 has popularized multiple genres, I don't even think that's true. DotA needs to be left out of this discussion as that is its own game. In the RTS world, War3 is not regarded as highly as Starcraft, while OoT is still the benchmark for which every adventure game must aspire to. And as far as the single-player campaign, it was just okay. All of my friends have played it and I don't think anyone would rate it above OoT in quality or immersion.
Now, another thing, OoT also happens to be the most competitive speedrunning game in the world. Whether you respect this sport is up to you, but to me it isn't really any different than competing in any other game or race. OoT happened to be not only one of the best games of all time, but also one of the most glitchy games of all time. Glitches that normal people would never, ever find, but speedrunners have been working at for years. People run it in multiple categories, and there are tournaments (races) for the game every day. It's still being optimized. So, in light of OoT being the crown jewel of multiple categories, I think it beats War3 hands down unless you start including custom maps.

Why? DotA has many many many things directly from WC3. Items, the way you get XP, the attack animations, the general style (fantasy-ish), day/night, trees, high ground, many abilities are 1:1 copies from WC3 (like Bladestorm, Windwalk, Hex etc. etc). It's actually ridiculous that it was legally possible for DotA 2 to even be made by another company.

Warcraft 3 was and remains superiority in gameplay, music, and story.
It also has multiplayer!
Uh, music, no. Story...are you on crack?! Gameplay, meh they are completely different games.
WC3 is a good RTS that isn't as good as BW or AoE 2. OoT has no comparison, it is one of the biggest 'steps forward' in gaming that's ever been made. THe sublime transition to 3d perfectly executed, a long and absorbing adventure. As someone who played equal time in WC3 and OoT, there is no way in my right mind I could justify picking WC3.
you don't like wc3 music? wtf? i have the sound track because it was so good, only a couple of other games have had better sound tracks (original C&C comes to mind)
If I have to choose between OOT and Warcraft 3 im going with War3. I dont think either one are on my top 5 of favorite ever (though OOT might be in top10) but theres just something about that game that made it amazing. I would especially say that once Master Quest was available and added some much needed complexity to dungeons which helped make it a flawless game.
I remember being completely in awe the first time i stepped out of korkiri forest into Hyrule and at that point realised it wasnt just another Zelda game but this was going to be awesome. The way the game set the stage in the first 3 areas having us explore the world and get to know people only to truly raise the stakes after the time jump was some of the best storytelling I have probably ever seen in a game.
There were things in it that other Zelda's did better (I still think Majora's Mask had the most fun set-up of side quests and the dungeons typically have done nothing but get better) but none of the Zelda's have truly captured the story that OOT managed to. 15 years later that might be the storyline I am most interested in seeing reach its conclusion since due to Majora's Mask it sort of ended on a cliffhanger.
WC3 because the singleplayer was pretty damn good but really the MP WAS GODLIKE. I have never had more fun in a game than all the custom maps from when the game was in its younger stage (first 3 years). DoTA came and killed the UMS scene.
I think people who missed OoT by being too young when it was first released are bound to say WC3. They never experienced the magic of OoT because they were too young and then, when they played it it was essentially 'old news' and an 'old game'. And because it wasn't multiplayer and therefore perpetuated by a 'scene', there was no encouragement to see the virtues of it. That's the only explanation I can give for Deus Ex not being as popular as it should be. It is a *better* game than the competition but it doesn't get the props because people see it as an 'old game'.
I think people who were the right age for OoT and also for WC3 are the best barometers of the contest. People who experienced the magic of both games and were around at the right time to be absorbed by them. I spent many hours perfecting my orc strategies, plowing through the WC3 campaign. I even preferred WC to starcraft at the time. But now I see the error of my ways. I was introduced to AoE II AoC after having gone through WC3 for a few years and realised that AoE was a better game and much deeper. Then I strangely took the route of getting into AoE3 before getting into BW again and realising how much better it was than WC3. Of course, what strikes me here is that this trip never happened with OoT. It always was a great game and nothing ever came that was better than it in its genre. The villain is timeless, the music is timeless, the characters are great, the length of the story is great, the hidden quests are great, the sidequests like going fishing are great, the horse riding was revolutionary and great, shooting your bow was great, playing your ocarina was boss. Not to mention it was one of the most revolutionary steps in graphics ever made in gaming. It was Crysis on crack when compared to its 1998 competition. Pure devotion to visual excellence.
I think it's possible to say that OoT had an incredible effect on 3d games and pushed the bar up. I believe, conversely, that games like WC3 pushed the bar down. RTS gaming was better and still is better in the days when it was AoE 2, BW, Red Alert, Total Annihilation. It doesn't help that I also think DotA is a terrible betrayal of the RTS genre, giving people an easy way out of the challenge of RTS games (which is the most fun element for me...) and that WoW is the endtimes of gaming, and therefore, for my money, WC3 goes down in my estimation when rated for the games which it spawned.
By the way just to add, I'm not trying to condescend anyone who was the 'right age' to enjoy both games properly and prefers WC3, there are plenty of reasons to prefer WC3, just none that move me in any way.

OoT was nothing special visually compared to PC games 1998.
There was a huge step made in graphics 1998 - by Unreal.
I'm kind of glad a Warcraft game is going to win the voting, on a Starcraft forum, so we can just invalidate this entire poll and pretend it never existed.

Yeah I forgot I really wanted to reply to this horrific post. Out of all the things that have made me want to vomit my guts out in this thread this is the worst. You are actually getting someone saying that Skyrim has better music than NOBUO UEMATSU. And then 'the gameplay'...what the hell...ff and chrono trigger are the greatest JRPG games ever. Skyrim doesn't even really do anything 'gameplay' wise that wasn't already done by Oblivion. It's just an incremental improvement but in terms of the sword fighting, it's pathetically one dimensional. Great game but it's not great because of the gameplay. My only guess is that Froob is like 17 or something. Seriously 'bro' buy a copy of Baldur's Gate II and educate yourself as to what constitutes good gameplay in a sword and shields RPG.

No way, OoT was more special visually than any PC game in 1998 and way better than Unreal and Half Life, which both had a lot of flat edges and were basically less full.
I think this Poll didnt work as intended. Why do you think WC3 TFT is in the finals because its one of the best games ever or because this is a Starcraft forum with Sc1 and SC2 banned from the poll and wc3 as the only remaining predecessor?

It is in the pool because of its UMS scene. Disregarding DotA which I played for 5 years it had a lot of other great UMS games that were in some cases better than games that people took money for.
Endless bickering. Gotta love it. OoT voters who say the WC3 voters are probably too young, get real. I doubt OoT would even have made it this far if we didn't have any 'young' people vote.

I'm pretty satisfied with the results, as I spent an incredible amount of time playing WC3 in the past. From awesome customs like Island D, Skibi TD, and NOTD to the badass campaigns in both the original and expansion, the game had tons of enjoyable content that lasted many years.

Well some of the games that are considered very good are still kinda niche/unknown games. Take Vampire as example, I've heard only good about the game itself, but I barely know anyone who has ever played it. While nearly everyone I know who's somewhat into PC/video games has played WC3 in some shape or form at some point.

Exactly, Vampire is possibly the best WRPG ever made as far as atmosphere and dialogue goes. But barely anybody plays it, and the release version was so bugged you'd be lucky to play through it without running into something game-ruining. You need the community patch to make it playable, it's not a mod, just fixes all the bugs(It was the first source game that wasn't made by valve). Really wish troika hadn't gone down. They made some serious quality games.
But yea these kind of polls end up being more about which good games most people played and less about which games are actually good, but that's not what this was about. It was about TLs favourite game, not the best game. And i completely understand WC3 winning.

This man is not kidding, personally I can say VTMB is the last true RPG that I've played/got made. It's the kind of game you will come back to after some years and it's still great, or even better, because it's still to this day being patched/modded. It is not perfect by any means but I can HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants a wonderful RPG experience, just be sure, as said before, to patch it Thoroughly :p.

Patching in this case means use the latest community patches, because the producers left the game in a state where it's almost unplayable.
