So I'm just curious about all of the students who frequent this site.
What colleges do you guys go to?
If you're a senior in high school, what college do you WANT to go to? I know that the UC's are sending out letters or emails of acceptance right now and I'm happy for some of my high school friends who are going to go to UCSD.
Of course the alums of college can always say where they went to and what class they were a part of. Major if you'd like.
I'll try to keep this up to date and please correct me on anything wrong. There's a lot of ambiguous acronyms that may easily mean a college in one area but something else in another area.

Wow congratulations 3.22.04 on getting into some of the really selective colleges in the US.
|
Applied to:
Queens U- Accepted and chosen Waterloo- Accepted UWO- Accepted McMasters- Accepted Toronto- Accepted
I think to qualify for a US university I would have had to take a SAT? Anyway, not the least bit interested to study in the US
|
im gonna go to a Community College for a year or two and then probably transfer to ISU. ( Iowa State University)
but u probably dont want to wear yourself out updating your main post jkilla, there have already been like 2 threads on this and they have *alot* of people;/

Unfortunately, alot of schools require the ACT as well

Most likely going to UCI next year (senior now), becuase I was rejected from UCSD . In the middle of appealing that right now.

Congratulations, excellent job. My only advice is that for the love of god do NOT go to cornell. If you are a social being of any kind it will take away your soul. And also it's weird washu waitlisted you, I guess they took too many asians last year. From what I've heard the campus life there isn't that great either.

I'm a sophomore. I would like to get into:
1. MIT/Stanford 3. Caltech 4. Carnegie Melon University (one of the best schools in computer science)
Backup - Purdue Univirsity (I live in Indiana and can scholarship, so I'd end up paying like <= $5000 per year)
My parents say that if I don't get a ton of scholarship money, they won't send be to CMU. It costs about as much as MIT, but it's only ranked about 24th, despite its computer science department pretty much rivaling MITs.
I like Stanford because it's in the heart of Silicon Valley in sunny California. It's also a tiny bit easier to get into than MIT. I was born in Boston though, and I lived there for about 8 years. I'll be majoring in Computer Science. I'll either get a double major or minor in Electrical Engineering as well.
Yes, I'm Chinese.

I'm currently in Queens University and doing Mathematics and Mechanicl Engineering

graduated from U Waterloo, computer science and combinatorics and optimization; now at U of Toronto.

3.22.04 my honest advice to you is stay in austin
why? 1) you will have tons of friends that go there with you already, plus the opportunity to meet a ton more 2) you are really smart (obviously) and the average UT student is not as smart. you will dominate curves and get good grades rather easily. at MIT or stanford, you'll be worked like a dog for the same end result. you want to have time to yourself. 3) austin is a great place to live and study
im going to do my PhD at UT
i'm from Houston btw. i think leaving texas was the biggest mistake i've made

you go to cornell? you should've pmed me when I was asking if there were any sc players. I stayed at Cornell during the fall because of the hurricane. And honestly this is just from my experience, but it was miserable because of A. the weather, B. had to walk like 2 miles to theta drug to pick up bud from High Rise 5, C. Frat parties were lame and ended at like 1. D. There was nothing in Ithaca except for the mall. E. Had to walk sooooooo far to central campus when there were no buses. And uphill back.
But overall it wasn't that bad and I did get to meet a lot of chill people. But it's just one of those schools that if you don't try to meet people then no one will come to you because it's so damn big. And it was really hard to keep in touch with friends for the same reason. And about the drinking...................................................... I was playing beer pong in one of the lounges and somehow an RA out of nowhere just busts in and made us dump two 36 packs out. I go to tulane and on a normal night, there are kegs out on the porches of every frat house on the same street.
If you want to settle down and get work done and be really smart go to cornell. If you want to have more than a little bit of fun in sacrifice of academics go somewhere else.

I can agree with this. I got into some bigger name schools, but staying in Delaware for college was a great choice. At Delaware the competition just isn't as high. Smoking the curve and getting good grades is a lot easier than at MIT or stanford or any other ivy league level school
and if you work hard, do research, get to know profs, you'll do just as well with regards to internships / jobs / grad school.
oh, university of delaware, chemical engineering, third year

It would help if people who went into good universities add the following: GPA: SAT Score: Any Extra-Curricular Stuff?:
This would help me see what it takes to get into good schools. Thanks

gpa: 3.95 unweighted or so, #3 in my class SAT: 1550 extra curriculars: black belt in taekwondo, 12 years of piano, 4 years of math and reading tutoring, few others jobs uhh 4 years of mathleague, 4 years of swimming, forget waht else it's been a while
got into cmu and cornell

don't get too caught up with that. I think 50% of it is luck. For example maybe this school got too many latino applicants this year and wants to cut down or maybe they got two applicants that have similar "stats" but one is good at chem, the other math, and the school wants more chem majors. GPA can be weighed/unweighed, from a prep school/private day school/public school/school for the gifted. SAT score does count a good amount. Extra-curricular can vary.

Hehe Fightin Blue Hens
Yea, I definitely love Austin. So many of my friends say how much they wanna get away, but I don't really want to. I got into the Honors program at UT called "Plan II" as well so I would be doing that if I stayed. Of course, money is a problem, and financial aid is not easy to come by for someone like me (I would classify myself as "upper middle class," meaning that it's a massive strain to go to an Ivy without financial aid but not impossible; therefore: no financial aid). I've honestly had my fair share of academic competition at my school as well, and though my friend think I'm crazy for considering UT when I've gotten into schools like CalTech and M.I.T. I'd rather have a more relaxed atmosphere, I think.
I'll go ahead and put those stats Mini asked:
GPA: 4.2, rank # 32 due to my school being a "magnet" school and too competitive for my taste SAT: 2400 (this is not so helpful as you might think, most of the very competitive colleges hardly even care if you make perfect score, as long as it's like 2200+ they are all the same) Extracurriculars: Piano for 12 years, cello for 6. Tennis for like 7 years, crew for 3 years, got a couple medals at state and regionals. That's about it though. And National Honor Society (which is a joke)
|
I doubt it's 50 percent luck.
At least for UC's, if you have solid GPA 3.9+, 1500+, an average essay I don't think you will get rejected regardless of extracuriculars, race, etc.
As for me GPA: 4.3-4.4 weighted, #6 out of class of 300 SAT: 1520 Extracurriculars: None---I almost, ALMOST, put starcraft as a hobby in my essays....wait I did 4 years of badminton, but I don't think people what that is...hahaha jk PS I wrote my essays 2 hours before it was due...so I know it was crappy...I was the kinda guy that submitted my apps at 11:30 november 30?
got accepted by all UC's...no privates...private schools want more rounded people, unlike me
|
Senior in HS right now. Planning on doing one year at a community college then transferring to UC Merced. It's probably below my academic level a bit (I got into some special program that basically guarantees me admission to any UC school) but I'd rather go to a small college. It's also relatively local, as I live near San Diego. If you move out of CA, coming back is painful financially.

MIT Yale Harvard Princenton NYU Or the community college 4 blocks away from me. I have over 200k in inheritance money but I'm not allowed to use it T_T. Considering I'm in 11th grade and I've just about done pure shit, the best thing I can possibly pull off at this point is to invent some sort of invention to change the world so that everybody at every university will be like OMFG This kid is a genius and get me in their university....artifical human embryo system here we gooooooo..end the world of this fucking abortion debate and earn millions wooooot
But I could always join the military and become a fucking marine and show the world how supreme America is in the world.

Damn congrats on getting into LA. I know some people, one being my gf, who have 2200+ with 3.8+ and well rounded extracurricular with massive APs who didn't get in. They were pretty pissed off :X
To add my scores:
My GPA: ~3.5 (I never really looked for the exact figure, but it's around there =[) SAT: 2000
Rejected by UCLA, SB, SD Accepted by UCI, UCR Waiting on UC Berkeley (rofl)
I really wanted to get into SD =[ damn WoW for ruining my junior year causing my grades to slip into massive B+ TT.

I have a somewhat but not completely related question:
Has anyone taken the Chemistry "Subject SAT" and gotten a really weird (i.e., low) score? I've heard some rumors about scoring glitches, and I'm looking for a ray of hope to explain my piteously low percentile...
|
UCSB - Mechanical Engineering. UCSB kicks ass by the way if any of you were considering going here.
|
PanaRaMa, thanks.
Yeah, my friend was telling me about someone he knew who had a 4.2 gpa and 2200 SAT score and didn't get in. That sucks, he said I got in for being a minority, though I admit I don't know much about how this works. Probably true though if you look at my score and plus I have so little extra-curricular.
|
Its all about graduate school.
If you don't get into the ivy leagues, dont sweat it. Work your ass off at a community or state college/university, then transfer or get your graduate degree at the best one you can get into. In the long run, you'll save thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is what I would recommend to middle/lower class americans, which I'm sure 99% of us are.

Waiting for: Harvard Yale Princeton Stanford (top choice) Berkeley Columbia UPenn Northwestern John Hopkins NYU
No rejections yet, but I expect at least 5, just based on statistics. My test scores are disappointing low, but my have plenty of ECs and I did some very risky essays to remove myself from the stereotypical asian applicant. I would be ranked #1 in class if we had a weighted GPA, but with only one B in APUSH sophomore year (joined 8 weeks late... was too hard to catch up and ended up with 89.1%) I am ranked 9 out of 229 'cause of extreme grade inflation at our school. Oh well.
Anyway, if you want to see my stats, you can here. I'll be updating it as I hear from schools on April first, so yeah.

Currently attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, relatively small like 18,000 students, friendly atmosphere I suppose.
Double majoring in Business Management/Finance which sucks hardcore, my parents put undeclared on the application then sent it before I could put what I wanted lol, so for freshman orientation I just picked something at random basically... but I'm like 10 classes away from graduation (which makes me a senior weee).
As far as graduate school no telling where I'll land, or if I'll go... infact I might go to an even smaller school just because of how easy it will be..

Me accepted to all UCs except UCLA, waiting to hear from cal. - applied EE for all of them other than cal
UIUC - accepted Purdue - accepted Uw-madison - rejected (forgot to mail transcript) UW seatle - accepted

was i the only one that assumed he was joking? (about his list of colleges)
|
Actually I was not joking about that all, and man are you serious? Even if I were to write an extravagant essay and manage to somehow provide a decent image at my interview it will not work?
And no I'm not joking about the list of colleges either, I really, really want to get into MIT
|
LOL dude if you have a 2.4 gpa (unweighted) then unless you have some MAJORRRR hook thats like an automatic rejection (its also nearly impossible to have a hook that you develop in your last year, they like to see consistency)
sorry
ahh don't worry too much about your undergrad school anyhow, as long as you work hard you can basically make it from anywhere
this also goes for all people that will still be applying to colleges in future years, but honestly high standardized test scores (and even GPA to a lesser extent) alone aren't going to get you accepted, its more of a check if you don't meet their imaginary minimum you'll have to be a lot stronger in your "hook" and whatever makes you special

a friend of mine really wants to go to WPI because of those majors i think, how is it there?
and quietidiot i'm sure you could go to schools better than your community college, its just you've listed like top 5, top 10 big name schools, which are already difficult for most people (although i had a friend that had MIT as a safety -_-) and would probably require a miracle for someone in your situation
anyhow if you can create something super revolutionary to the world just to get accepted to college, you probably don't need higher education anyhow

please write those things in the "extrenuous circumstances" box that they provide. Have your counselor (no not psychological, but your college counselor =P) write that too, that you went thru some very difficult times, but that your current motivation and creative thoughts are promising. Also, I dont know what grade you are in (sry you may have mentioned it) but try your hardest to get straight A's from here on out. Then you have something to back you up when you say that I was going thru tough shit, but look, i'm putting myself together now. (even first semester senior year mid-term grades count for something if you have your college-counselor write about it)

No offense, but your parents are misinformed. CMU's CS department >> all other CS anywhere. They are the ONLY school with a dedicated school of computer science, separate from the engineering school. Carnegie Mellon is THE place to go if you are serious about computer science, especially cutting edge AI type stuff I think.

I think the tough part for west point is getting a letter of recommendation from a congressman? I think USAFA isn't too tough in terms of academics, considering some of the people whom I know that got in... yet still far above average.

It's actually pretty disgusting how many cross-admits go out- considering that a number of those could go to people that would have actually gone to X school. That being said, I know a number of people all from different backgrounds and having very different characteristics having similar acceptances.

Hopefully we won't get in a heated debate on the wherefores and therefores of affirmative action but I honestly wouldn't want someone spoon feeding me cause I'm a minority. I'm currently attending Rutgers University in NJ, studying finance and political science. I am waiting on Columbia College for transfer admissions, but I might stay at Rutgers for other reasons, even if I were to get in. I'm surprised to see a lot of the members in the BW community are attending very acclaimed schools. But then again, who would post if they're attending community college.
Good luck ya'll seniors on getting into schools. But remember, it's not the end of the world or your social and intellectual future if you don't get into the school you wanted. All you need is a sincere desire and determination to learn.
Just giving my two cents.

Yes, it really is about the drive you have to succeed, and the dedication you have to learning. I personally know pple who went to state colleges, (close to CC's actually) who are now multimillionaire, silicon valley mogul/pioneer guys. This, plus the utter ubandance of retards at my school, has really taught me not to judge anything based on a person's academic background, but by what that person himself has to offer.

graduated from HS in '03 I really only applied to engineering oriented schools, since I already knew what I wanted to do in undergrad, grad school, work, etc and even after that. (hence I didnt bother applying to Harvard Yale etc)
Accepted Princeton Duke Cornell Carnegie Mellon Northwestern UC Berkeley (their MAE program requested that I apply for their full scholarship, even though I didnt apply for it before their deadline. I guess they were that desperate? Idk.) UCLA UCSD UCSB USC(I find it really funny how USC always sends their acceptances really early, and will hand out full scholarships like nothing)
rejected MIT Standford (college board fucked up sending in my SAT scores T_T)

it's not as bleek as you think if you hate where you are, just study hard, and transfer to where you want to go or just stay at your safety school, totally dominate it, graduate with research experience / a high gpa / good recommendations and go to one of those top schools for graduate school really, the degree that matters the most is the last one

Dude, do you even know what you are talking about? I have been to parties at other campuses like UT Austin, and Cornell's party and social life is definitely comparable. After reading more of your posts, I think you were an idiot for playing pong in the lounge, I know I got JA-ed (disciplined) for beer in my room; RAs dont like to put their asses on the line for idiot freshmen who can't keep beer away from their places of responsibilties, they don't care if you drink but just don't bring it back. My roommate goes out like 4 times a week and comes back drunk as fuck most of the time, and hes an econ major with like a 3.9 GPA right now, work hard play hard. You must have been to some pretty bad parties also, all the ones I hit up end at like 2-3 and usually with the people crashing at the frat if they are that drunk. The only downside is the cops, they are such pricks for the first few weeks after that it gets beter except for random bursts of strictness.
About the parties, many of them you have to pay to get in, and yes, they do clear out at around 1-2-3, I've been to ones at fiji, pike, theta drug mostly, and like 4 others i forgot the name of. Obviously theres no scale to measure how awesomeof a party school cornell is but im just speaking from my limited experience there when i say that besides thurs/sat night, theres usually not much to do. About the cops and JAs, a kid in my dorm got charged with a DUI for having alcohol in his car while he was about to roll a blunt and hotbox in it. One of my friends had to go to another school for this semester because he was found with shrooms one night, and the cops kept randomly busting into his room on the 5th floor every week then after and busted him for other shit including taping firealarm/being in the same room as other people who were drinking vodka from a water bottle, etc. I'm sure most people would be happy with the level of fun they have there, but then i've also seen a lot of others that were really depressed with the social life there. Step outside on any night, and look around, all you'll feel is nothing but cold, cold, air and a bunch of really smart people walking to and fro from the library. Just thinking about it makes me want to know how you guys put up with that for 4 years.
O yea and also, i guarentne you people at ut-austin have crazier parties. I really don't think you can call cornell a "party school" by normal definition. Maybe for ivies
