After living in China for all this time, I have learned a few things. People there are generally not very self-questioning. By that I mean this: if someone does not know something, they don't go out of their way to research it up themselves.
There are many MANY misconceptions in China that can easily be busted by one google search (and yes people in China DO use google) this can include the whole blood type personality thing, traditional Chinese medicine (some are real, but some are fake), and a lot of random hoaxes that people believe.
I do NOT believe that it is a fault in the government but just the way that Chinese civilization has developed recently. That's not a specific Chinese mentality. That's the way people in general are, regardless of where they live. For example, you can look up the stats for the percentage of Americans who don't believe in evolution, or who think 9/11 is an inside job or who vote for either the Republican or Democratic party thinking it will make anything other than a minor difference. Just because you can find examples here and there of citizens acting progressively, doesn't mean the current system doesn't foster unwarranted hatred against the PRC's opponents.
There are many pro-Beijing, anti-Japanese people in Hong Kong. I've seen them step on flags. I've seen them spout their ignorant, racist crap. But again, they will NOT stoop down to violence. You're partially right. The education system does brainwash people (to an extent). But not noticeably more so than Canada or America or almost any country's education system. And news articles aren't lists of facts; they're just biased accounts from biased perspectives.
It doesn't take an education system to indoctrinate the people. Have you seen Chinese TV? I guarantee there is pretty much always a WW2 TV show on some Chinese channel that depicts the 'evil' Japanese people. In addition, movies come out literally every week on the topic. I grew up with that kind of media, and so did millions of other Chinese people (not to mention most old Chinese people hating Japanese and then passing on the ideas to the vulnerable minds of children).
This island protest is not about the islands, but rather an excuse for the Chinese to vent their anger, even though the Japanese of this generation haven't done shit to them. Japan can do everything to apologize for their WW2 crimes and the Chinese will never be happy, so long as the current media trends continue.

Shit seems to be getting real all over the place...middle east first, eastern Asia now. Interesting times indeed.

shangming don't blame the government for the stupidity of the people, anyone who is not stupid would have see things the way you see them to begin with, and this whole thing about the islands would not have went this far.

People are responsible for their own ignorance, but the government and the mass media are complicit. So you can place blame on the government for nurturing these beliefs.

This infographic was tweeted in china's twitter, and the guy has gotten so much hate for it. I think it's important for anyone who is interested in this whole turmoil, regardless of side, to take a look at it, and educate yourself before you go off spouting one thing or another. This xenophobia is scaring me, this isn't ww2 times, where you roll tanks and soldiers and fight slowly over time, this is fucking nuclear warfare time. and anyone who is downplaying this (especially western media where i haven't even heard a lick of it on the news) is what is really scaring me. It's like history is repeating itself and everyone is repeating it's own damn mistakes.

thx for the infographic. So basically It was never Chinese. And China only wants it now because of the oil, like every1 knew already.
|
well that's the problem, the entire thing is grey area.
China is claiming sovereignty because of the 2nd infographic, where the independent nation of ryuku paid tribute to CHINA. This then gives them claim that they had original ownership, even though, technically it was independent, and was probably just fearful of china at the time being more powerful than the largely warlord driven/non-unified japan.
Again the problems of the island didn't even creep up until a) oil was said to be found there which peaked interest, and b) the US had to decide who to give it back to (Japan).
Why does power over oil seem to drive the vast majority of conflicts in the world these days. sigh

What a drama queen.
The only reason this diplomatic shitfest is alive is because both of the two governments are tacitly endorsing it.
Japan's election cycle is coming and they want to deflect from their tanking economy and foster faux nationalism to gain more centralized power.
China's government is going though a once every decade or so power transition from Hu Jintao to Xi Jinping as well as a seriously slow of the Chinese economy.
Both just want to pull the wool over the majority of their own populaces' eyes long enough for them to make contingency plans for the future.
To a degree South Korea is doing this as well via the hilarious argument about Dokdo... which no country in the international community believes is part of Japan, but Japan itself. All of these countries' politicians are working with each other to allow utterly pointless minor issues color their national interest until they simply deem it no longer necessary and return to the status quo...

WTF?!!!!!! Japan even pays for the Islands! Ever heard of a country called Tibet?! Only, and that's really the only reason behind it, because China got money to burn this shit in your heads and Tibet doesn't because they are too friendly and prefer lighting themselves on fire before "whining" all over the rest of the world?!
REALLY? I MEAN, REALLY?! I'VE NEVER READ ANYTHING ABOUT TIBET IN HERE AND IT'S BASICALLY EXACTELLY THE SAME (EXCEPT JAPANESE EVEN PAYING FOR THE ISLANDS AND CHINA JUST INVADED TIBET) What do you think why does the whole world hear these news? Normally you get to hear nothing out of china? Kinda suspicious isn't it? OH WAIT, PROPER PROPAGANDA!
Sorry @ TL Crew for bad behaviour and Caps. I'm happy to accept all the punishment. But this makes me angry! Freaggin propaganda even in a gamesforum...
GG JAPAN!!! I was skeptical of your expertise on Asian affairs but those capitalized sentences really drove the point across. Where's the Tibet thread? We should go liberate it.

i guess we don't have Tibetan ppl on TL, or they would most likely have opened a thread

I figured this as such, but that's how lots of political figures came to power, but when things get out of hand... you get bad shit like ww2. I am just hoping shit doesn't escalate, but this whole thing just reeks of bullshit from all sides, and the fact that the government is using it to manipulate people is worse. what happened to serving the people.

It was never Japanese, either, until they annexed it during the process of imperial expansion. China's stance is that said imperial expansion was not legit, and so the islands are disputed and Japan has no unilateral right to nationalize them.
China never had direct jurisdiction over the island, but there are Japanese maps showing that the islands were Chinese territory, and a Japanese admiral who admitted that he did not know whether they belonged to China prior to Japan's annexation. The bottom line is that until 1885, nobody lived on the island, and so no actual authority was enforceable. However, 1895, when Japan formally annexed the islands, happened to be when they formally annexed Taiwan as well. It strikes a raw nerve.
