god this quote is so dumb. it's not profound or insightful or anything. it just gives two very obvious possibilities that when added together have a probability of 1. it's like saying, you either starve or you eat. you either go to bed hungry or you stay awake long enough to eventually eat something. you either take a dump or hold it in long enough to hurt. OF COURSE you either die a hero or you live long enough to become a villain. god dammnit you are gonna die eventually, so one of two situations will be true when you die - you're a hero or you're a villain. man, it's a great movie and ledger's performance was legendary, but this is such a dumbfuck quote for a movie this good.
All it says that every hero will eventually become a villain in a profound looking way. "You either die a villain, or live long enough to see yourself become the hero" should also be "obvious" by your logic. That quote is obviously true if the person in question is/was a hero, but that's not the point >.<

Dunno if this has been posted, but "you only live once" is my most hated phrase. It's like an empty, annoying justification someone spouts as they prepare to do something immoral/moronic.

that's not so annoying to me. it's a simple way of reminding somebody that they probably shouldn't try to be anybody but their regular self when it comes to simple confrontations. while that's obvious to you, it's not as obvious to a lot of nervous people.
whenever i put a lot of effort into my IM's to real-life friends---aka serious talk---it feels like a waste of time when i'm met by the single response of "lol" again and again... or i'm explaining something as best i can and they go "I guess so."

I'm rather offended by that
It's now very common to hear people say, "I'm rather offended by that", as if that gives them certain rights. It's no more than a whine. It has no meaning, it has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. "I'm offended by that." Well, so fucking what?' —Stephen Fry

How can the person know if my regular self is better suited for any such occasion? The only time when people try to act like someone else is when they are unsatisfied with their regular self and are trying to change certain aspects of their personality and attitude.
Then someone comes along and says "be yourself" instead of giving actual advice - and there's a fuckton of it to give.

no i want to fucking sit and stare at my cake and then let someone else eat it. its my fucking cake and im going to eat it It means that you want to enjoy eating your cake and then still have the cake after it's been eaten. It's like when someone wants something to always go their way. "It's not okay for other people to enforce their beliefs on me, but I am against abortion so no one can have abortions."
For the longest time I thought the phrase should be "cut your cake and eat it too" referring to when two kids are fighting over the biggest piece, so you let the first kid cut the cake and the second kid choose which piece he wants.

and yeah, if it was reversed to "you either die a villain.." it'd be just as stupid.
if the point was to make the audience say "oohhh wow i never realized that! now that's something cool to think about!" then yes, i agree that it's stupid because it is so obvious, yet tries to present itself in a profound, epic manner.

I second "YOLO". That phrase sucks and is overused. "That's racist!" for bringing up ANY sort of topic that deals with race, even if it's not particularly derogatory. My friend often says this for things (in a joking way still, but it gets old) that I might bring up such as "More black people play in the NBA than white people."

I like to troll people by saying GL HF... YOLO in SC2 games. It always gets an interesting response.
You only die once (YODO) was a good response once when they lost. ____
Funny ones: How would you like your eggs sir? "I'd like them well-done." He must of been high/drunk.
"What do I got to do to get your job?" It's my job bitch! Job security = I'm not telling you.

Where that one stems from I think is if you say would've, it sounds to a lot of people (depending on accent) as would of. If you don't really think about it and type how it sounds, it's quite a simple mistake to make.
Infact it's a mistake made so many times that I wouldn't be surprised if it could be counted as correct due to an evolution of the language. It's happened so much especially recently and although wrong, everyone knows what it actually is so it could quite possibly become accepted.

Not to derail, but that is only one definition. Plethora can mean a surfeit or a profusion of, which means an abundance rather than too much. The connotation of Plethora isn't necessarily too many (like the word excess) but more like more than enough to be considered acceptable (an abundance or teeming).
Back on track: I really dislike when I hear people try to use old south phrases in jest, but fail at it. More than you can shake a stick at, good ole' boy, etc. are all misused horribly -_-;;.

I hate the phrase "it's not rocket science". Why is it rocket science, and not quantum mechanics, or string theory, or something equally or more complex? Why is the science of rockets the prime example for an overly complex field? Admittedly, I don't know anything about rocket science, but I don't see what makes it the hardest thing ever.
Also, it is an almost meaningless phrase; it just annoys someone when they're struggling with a task.

Of course it has meaning. It means that the person saying it is offended, and a lot of people care about not offending those they are talking to.
