1) Low skill entry 2) Free 3) Team play What other huge sports sounds similar? Oh right, soccer. These will get you the audience and the player base. Being fun is subjective (I personally enjoy dota more, but that's a whole another issue), but these are what's pulling in the audience in korea and it's working pretty damn well.

LoL and BW is at the opposite polar side of the same planetary space. BW have epitomized itself as "chess on crack" with the hardest gameplay while LoL is catered around the casual market. I feel that SC2 have tried to satisfied both market and now its putting itself into a very awkward position. You either go full hardcore or full casual. Basketball Didn't Kill Hockey. LoL Won't kill SC2/BW For E-Sports to truly Cultivate itself, it needs added exposure. additional games that people can rally behind is a good thing. Why can't some people understand this?

Anyways i don't care about those games, bw/sc2 are the only games i'd prob ever watch.

I find it funny indeed. That is because it is true, LoL is a joke compared to SC2. And 2 times more of a joke compared to BW. In terms of skill ceiling that is. And I don't know who in their right mind would say that SC2 is not easier than BW. It's way easier, but still way way harder than LoL or DotA.

People try to use strange words like "skill ceiling" (that effectively should mean that you can't get better. Well wtf, there's no such thing) or LoL being "easier" than SC2. Wtf is that, really? It's equally hard to be good at anything provided there's competition. If winning at LoL takes you 6 hours of training per day, it only means that there's noone who practices 10 hours yet. It's not about being easy or hard. SC2 is not easy compared to SC, SC2 is bad compared to SC. The only thing about those two games is that SC is much more fun to play and watch. And shit like MBS, automine or whatever other 'killer feature' don't mean anything, it's just the badly designed units, badly implemented pathfinding and a bad storyline stripped of 2/3 of the game's races to get more money with "expansions" that never saw the light of day. That in turn limits the influx of new players etc. LoL's immense playerbase and recent growth proves that it's fun. It's more fun than SC2 to play and recently with the increase of the average skill level among top players it's become rather fun to watch. It's a better game. And please throw away all that bullshit about easiness. V are people wharious activities may have different entry levels (the amount of effort required to feel generally in control), but pushing anything to it's limit is equally hard. Just because pushing something to the limit means working as hard as possible. Progamerso push games to their limits, that easy. And, if anything, a low entry level is a good thing for the game, not bad, because it attracts audiences. Bitching about that is nothing but arrogance. When it comes to player base, you can't compare a f2p-game with one that costs like 40-50 euro. Ofc there's not a "skill ceiling" if you dumb it down, you can always micro just a bit better or macro just a tiny bit better. The skill ceiling more refers to the fact that if player X practices for 2 hours/day and player Y practices for 8 hours/day and they are still comparable in skill (provided they have the same potential regarding RTS-games) then yes, there is a pretty low skill ceiling. Consider Quake where a 75-80% hit rate with railgun is considered amazing, the fact that there is still 20-25% to improve on there means that the skill ceiling is high.

Wow, well put. I think it's just the elitism that exists within sc/sc2 scene. It seems that BW players have always bashed the sc2 and now sc2 players look at LoL in the same eyes as BW fans see sc2

I also think that the essence of pro play can't be transported via E-Sports: Team strategies and communication stay largely hidden, so i've really not enjoyed the few events i watched. Also huge parts of the LoL community are unbearable. I can count the number of respectful games without flaming and hatred by the fingers of one hand, whereas i hardly ever find the same amount of ignorance in a game of Starcraft. So for me it's sad that LoL might become the big horse of E-Sports, i'd really prefer to see Starcraft in that position.

Lol I am fairly certain that hockey ratings recently have started to overshadow basketball in the American market, so quite the opposite actually. BW has been dwindling guys (Team 8 lol), it is time to accept the new wave ? /rant Edit: eSports can never succeed unless we stop being elitists and all get on the same page. BW is harder than WoL, WoL is harder than LoL. This allows a wider audience, not everyone has been gaming since they were 3. Sports like bball and soccer have a gentle learning curve and are immensely difficult to master, maybe games will end up that way too. However, we will never know if we, one of the largest supporters of eSports on the internet, bash our own thing. Stop looking from a SC point of view and start looking from a general eSports POV /rant

If I'm looking for a game based around mastery of mechanics I certainly won't go to SC2 - I'll go to BW. LoL's mechanics are relatively easy, but that just lets you focus on the other parts of gameplay. Reacting to 9 other peoples' every move is quite a challenge.

It’s vomit inducing how many fake esports fans we have here on TL. It seems most are only sc or sc2 esports fans, all other games be dammed. Straight up i like BW. I don't give a rats arse about esports lol. Edit: Downloading LoL right now lmao.

To be honest, LoL is going to take a lot of the workforce, spotlight and investment that other games have been enjoying. It might not kill them (I wouldn't be surprised if it did, though) but it will lower the quality for sure. Just look at how the most famous BW caster (Kim Carrier) is now a LoL walking advertisement. Or many BW players are now LoL advertisements/ "team coaches": It's pretty obvious that Tencent (owner of ~93% of Riot) is doing a great job, putting the money where it matters to get popular. Tough luck for all of us that don't really like LoL, but there's nothing we can do about it.
