first of all billboard is only american. the american music scene is very, very different from the european. singles list generally have a larger number of hiphop songs here in norway as well though, but that's because people who listen to rock usually want the full album..
anyway http://www.nrk.no/programmer/radioarkiv/vg_lista_topp_40/4392216.html
that's the list over the most selling albums in norway in 2004
some of those artists are norwegian thus you won't have heard of them. BUT, there are more than 3 times as many albums I would characterize as rock than albums I would characterize as hiphop/rap. there's some r&b too, but there is far more pop-rock.
in fact eminem (with encore) is the highest placing rap artist. with number 14. guns and roses, a rockband that has been extinct for more than 10 years, with greatest hits placed 8.
so while the AMERICAN rock scene might be dying, that's most DEFINITELY not the case here.

Well despite the fact that US music scene is the most predominant in the world, rock is almost non - existent in Asia apart from Japan (unless underground of course) so that should balance out the europe...
|
i dont even like rock music but your arguments are retarded, its not dying, it wont die, and it cannot possibly die. Who cares about what asia listens to, seriously ive never heard of one retarded asian artist in america ever. So =) and even if i havent heard of the rock bands in europe im sure they are bigger here than the asian music is over here +O

you did however claim it was a global trend. while it is not a trend in europe at all. so there's nothing I have to suck up, because I live in europe, don't intend on living anywhere else, and I greatly prefer rock to hiphop. (although there is quite a lot of hiphop I enjoy as well.. )

Asia + America + Oceania = pretty global isn't it?
I remember in my early days in Australia rock music was predominant here everone was going nuts for silverchair and stuff but now it's a whole different story so it's safe to say that rock music is in decline in Oceania as well(NZ as well).

.....
can't you PLEASE just concede ONE MINOR POINT and admit that you phrased yourself in a bad way? PLEASE? you're really annoying me right now..
I mean I'm not even arguing that hiphop is growing far faster than rock is. im only saying that rock is not dying and there's no reason why I would have to "suck up" anything, because where I live rock is thriving.

I was going to reply to the billboard posting, but this is just as good as anything I would have said.

Er...... I wasn't even considering norway 0.00000000001% when I wrote that statement since this thread started because of 50 cent so sure, you have nothing to suck up, I mean I couldn't care less. So yeah, while statistically it is true that on the whole rock is in decline globally except maybe europe, you have nothing to suck up.
|
the music industry as a whole is in decline, look at record sales from 5-6 years ago compared to today ;O everyone back then went platinum, its not the case right now
|
I was talking about the proportion of each genre % not the number of sales itself thanks, why do you think I got the charts instead of number of records rappers sold?
|
well rock music may just be on a slightly larger decline than the regular music industry, but anyway not everything is measured by record sales =)
|
......... ok What do number of sales represent? what do you think? Do you buy albums because you have nothing else better to spend your money on or because you like that particular band/music?

Going back to the lyrics thing, 50's aren't deep for sure but at least you can take it on the second degree and it becomes quite funny.
Metal lyrics on the other hand are so utterly bad there can't even be a second degree of appreciation there. It's so bad it's not even funny.
Oh and another point. At least when 50's rapping about guns and hustling and shit, he knows from experience. He isn't "frontin" as he would say.
Whereas all the metal nerds singing about apocalypse and satan and armageddon and whatever only have ever known their parents' basement and dungeons and dragons.

That's exactly what I said.. at least they are true to themselves..

the best lyrics I've ever read were from metal/rock bands (they weren't about satan and the apocalypse though ) And I couldn't care less if he's "being true to himself" if he writes like shit. I could write lyrics "being true to myself" and talking about my everyday life before I was a famous music star, they would still suck.

Metal lyrics are bad? I used to listen to rap before.. i loved rap for a few years but then I saw that many lyrics in hardcore and metal are WAY better than rap lyrics. Some rappers are "true to themselves" but G-unit aren't part of them. It's trash. At least metal is low profile unlike this gangster (wtf? they aren't gangsters they are acting) stuff.

haha thats so true, lets yell about angels and the world ending and wear funny masks and stuff.

There is more energy yelling about angels and stuff than just moving your head up and down to encourage some nigger getting more clickity clank in his piggy bank
