I don't like the socks ^^ They are just too bright and too blue. Otherwise your outfit looks great I think bright sox are fine. You really need a belt. A belt would make your lines much cleaner and divide your upper and lower body. Match your belt to your shoes as closely as possible. Not bad other than the lack of the belt. I prefer a bit more colour on either the pants or the shirt, but thats just personal preference.

Blue shocks are my favorite part along with the shoes. The biggest thing is by far the belt. You NEED a belt. Just find one that matches your shoes decent. Full grain leather will last the longest and look the best throughout its lifetime. If you want there is a thread on the reddit male fashion advice sidebar on how to make your own full grain leather leather belt. I made one and I like it a lot. Planning on making another one in a different color soon.

First, this has been a really informative thread. I feel like I've learned a lot just from some of the more explanatory posts and links presented here. Thanks for putting some effort into it.
I'm looking for some feedback/advice. Here's my background and current situation wrt wardrobe and life... I guess read if you care lol.
+ Show Spoiler + During college and grad school, I pretty much only wore jeans & sneakers & whatever super-casual shirts I had. I built up a surplus of "dress" shoes and shirts (most were gifts, some have very little wear) which are usable but some of them might not be such great items. I've been living on a tight budget for the last few years, aggressively paying off student loans, which I will finish doing in the next 12 months. With that and a recent promotion, I'm in a situation where I can plan and acquire a better wardrobe.
Most of my life I've been in great shape, playing tennis throughout school and running a marathon a few years ago. Last year I really slacked off, plus lazy eating habits and general loss of metabolism, I'd bet I gained 15-20 pounds. I've lost about half of that mostly by making more of an effort to eat better and getting back into short distance running. But in spite of that effort, some of the pants I used to wear at my first (more formal) job will probably never fit again... which is fine. I used to be on the border of too skinny. Currently I'm 5'10 and somewhere around 150-155 lbs. I'm trying to regain some definition in my arms & legs and lose the (for most standards, small) amount of flab on my gut. But I don't anticipate huge changes to my figure.
I work in a business casual environment. There's no actual dress code and you do get the full range of dress levels, but most men tend to wear jeans & polo, chinos/khakis & polo, or slacks & button down (or slacks & polo... which I don't like). I've been a bit on the casual side, and I'm looking to upgrade to more of the chinos & button down look. I'll be looking for a pair of navy chinos soon and, at a lower priority (already own something) a better pair of khaki/tan ones if necessary. I've got plenty of decent polos and enough button downs as well, although I'll slowly be upgrading the quality of the latter.
I'd also like to get a pair of nice (and nice feeling material), fashionable jeans. I've tended to prefer a flared leg and dislike skinny jeans. (I already have skinny legs and don't want to look like a chicken) Though I'll give people's suggestions a try, since higher quality material might make the slim cut a better feel and look.
I have a nice suit. It's black with blue pinstripes - a little strong for work, but it's great for the very limited occasions I use it for. My other suits (both over 10 years old) no longer fit and are low quality so I will be getting rid of them. I'll eventually replace them with a gray suit, a navy suit, some kind of brown tweed coat & pants combo, and a charcoal suit. This is a low priority.
Summed up, I'm in a non-urgent situation and I'll be slowly building up a young professional/upscale/trendy wardrobe over the course of some years, and slowly offloading a mish-mash of stuff from college. I'm not looking to drop a few thousand in a month, but I'll probably have my eyes open at all times for something good - shoes, pants, nice shirts, maybe a few really trendy outfits. I've got old stuff that has been working but that I'm looking to replace. I anticipate that my wardrobe will stay the same size or shrink in quantity, while growing in quality over that time.
I feel like my grasp of pants and dressy shoes is weaker than my grasp of shirts and sneakers, so... here are some pants and shoes I'd like feedback on:

Thanks for your help.

Pants should be slimmer, tapered, and hemmed. For jeans, avoid pre-distressing and "designer" brands like 7FAMK, True Religion, Diesel, etc. Get some Levi's in a dark color in 514 or 511. Or, if you have some more money look into raw denim.
Don't tuck your t-shirt into your pants. It's just not right.
Those shoes aren't very flattering.

your express jeans look the best in terms of fit and squaretoes are bottom-tier shoes unless you want to pretend you're from the 90s.

Is it really recommended to wash jeans just once every 4-5 months? for enthusiasts, the rotation is every 6 months-1year per wash. for everyone else, 4-5 for raw denim is standard. If you get generic jeans like levis, throw em in the wash once a week and it won't matter.

Ill try to go through them as you listed them:
#1) I am not a fan of sneakers with chinos. I would go with either some sort of boat shoes, penny loafers. desert boots, chukkahs, or some oxfords. Heres a picture of me from today actually with some gray chinos and walnut AE strand oxfords. You can nix the SC and just go with a buttonup and it works just as well. The second picture is plum chinos with brown suede boat shoes. I think shoes are a huge part in a complete outfit, and sneakers just seem kinda meh. I think they hold an outfit back.
+ Show Spoiler +
#2) Jeans are fine, again, not a fan of the sneakers. Would go with many of the same types of shoes suggested above.
#3) I am not a huge fan of the design on the jeans, and the rise seems a bit high for my personal liking, but thats just a matter of taste. With a button up over it, it would probably look better. The oxfords already help improve the look.
#4) Those sneakers got a bit more flare, but those are probably only wearable in limited circumstances. Those would be okay to bust out in summer once in a while.
#5) the two shoes you posted. Not a huge fan of either of them. The square toe isnt offensive on the last pair, but it isnt exactly sleek either. I would look to maybe upgrade your shoe collection, especially since good shoes will last you well into the future anyway. I really like Allen Edmonds, and models such as the Strand, Fifth Avenues, Mcallister, etc... will all do wonders for your wardrobe. I have 4 pairs of good quality dress shoes, walnut fifths, walnut strands, brown burnished strands, and black bruno maglis. I always get complements on the shoes over anything else I wear. If you can figure out your size on the different lasts, AE's can be had for relatively cheap on eBay, or from sellers on places such as styleforum. I got my strands for 120 and 190 (one from ebay one from SF) 1 in worn once condition, the other brand new.
As for pants, I really like chinos for casual/business casual dress. I have about 6 or 7 different colour pairs. My favourites are from Bonobos, then next favourites would be from Lands End/LEC. If you want to add something a bit dressier, some nice gray wool slacks are as versatile as it gets.
If you have any other questions, or want me to explain or clarify anything, you can post on here or feel free to pm me also :D I have really gotten into the shoe game, and shoes I think are the biggest impact piece in an outfit.

Oh right... I don't do that usually, just trying to get the whole pants in the photo. Guess it would have made more sense to just wear the shirt like I'd normally wear it, or wear a shirt that I'd normally tuck in.

Hey guys,
I'm looking for an equivalent of the Clarks Desert Boots Beeswax. Unfortunately, the CDB Beeswax aren't aviable here anymore (Germany/Europe(?)). So if someone knows a shop which delivers them for a reasonable price it would be great to share!) I really like the colour and shape, especially when they're looking used with scratches etc. Got any recommendations? Some people suggested Red Wings which seems to be kinda expensive compared to Clarks.

I had a couple people PM me saying the Bonobos code for $25 off of $75 didnt work and wondering if there was a new one. Here is my new code (old one expired) if you are interrested in their stuff!
http://curebit.com/x/KTb1l
I ordered the navy Charleston seersucker suit from there and it is awesome, as well as my now 2 pairs of chinos from there. Good stuff!
|
Some recommendations please!
First, I'm looking for a chambray shirt under, say $80, preferably closer to $60, does anyone have any recommendations?
Next, I'd like to ask for a watch for my graduation. I'm still gonna be a student so I don't need anything ridiculous, but I'd like a nice watch to be able to wear. Could I get a recommendation for a good student, metal watch for around $200-$300? ^_^
Finally we should all post wiwts

Well TL this is a big milestone for me in my journey into manhood... I finally got my first leather coat. I'm a big fan of military kit and culture so natually I picked up a flight jacket. This one is made by Cockpit USA, and I couldn't be happier with it. It's now the best item in my wardrobe lol. If you want more info on it PM me as I don't want to advertise too much on TL.

+ Show Spoiler + I just bought a pair of these after some encouragement from my sister. Should I take them back and get something else or are they presentable? If they you think they look good, what would go well with them? You seem to have very large feet. Maybe you should think about buying shoes with a longer lacing (no native speaker, hope thats right ).

I picked up a pair of brown dress shoes from Nordstrom Rack a week ago, they've been great so far.
Also looking at getting some cool summer shoes that could be worn in a casual office with chinos, or outside of work with jeans. Here's what they had at the Macy's near where I live (Rack had nothing decent that wasn't either very formal, or sneakers). Thoughts on these?

I like the design of the second pair. Don't know anything about that brand though.
