Aight guys, got a question for you.
How much should I be looking to spend to get a very good quality overcoat, single breasted & 3/4 length? I'm a 6'1'' medium build guy, athletic build. It has to be warm enough to keep me from freezing to death in -40C weather, and I prefer it to be a good material like a wool/cashmere blend. I need something in the next 2 weeks so custom tailoring is out of the question. Most of the coats I've seen from 'mainstream' clothing brands like BOSS, Burberry,Nordstrom etc are in the 600+ range, with 600-1.5k being on the low/medium end, and the sky being in the limit.
I can afford to spend 1k on a coat, but I don't want to burn money just for the sake of burning it. Pointers please!
edit: I'm looking for something in this style preferably: overcoat

Do you need an overcoat for a professional setting? Like are you gonna be wearing a suit underneath? Or do you just like the look

I work corporate, so I do sometimes have to wear a suit - so this would be ideal to wear on top of that. My current employer has pretty relaxed dress code, but my last job had full professional every day - so suits 100% of the time. It's not all that unlikely I might find myself in that situation again. So it should be compatible with professional wear, definately. Also I find the look sexy, it suits me, no pun intended

well the first coat that comes to mind is the schneider algae coat

Can't attest to warmth, I'm sure there are lots of cheaper options but I'm not familiar with classic menswear. Don't get anything from the mall, so no huge boss, burberry, etc. Look through traditional clothing sites listed in the OP and filter by outerwear.

I definitely like some of the stuff that Suspension Point sells, and I'm going to be in Montreal within the next few weeks, so that could be a great opportunity to try some stuff on etc. Thanks for the advice!

No sleek, conventional looking overcoat will keep you warm to -40C, unless you have unusually high tolerance for cold. At those temps I think a hood is almost mandatory.

I'm exaggerating a bit - it doesn't often get that cold here Nobody really goes outside in -40C, lol. -20 to -25 is fairly common, though.

you'd need a parka then and nothing else
|
Even a Canada Goose parka is rated to -30 C which is "extreme" CG parka
that coat you posted won't do shit in -40
|
-40 requires a hood and a mask to prevent frostbite. If you're caught in a storm and it drops that low you build a quigloo, eat constantly (10,000 calories a day) and do jumping jacks to keep your heart rate up. There is no fashion in the picture when temperatures drop that low, only pain and suffering.
-20 will be okay with a topcoat for limited amounts of time with thermal underlayer and a warm scarf. You're going to want think wool, and look for something with a technical (think thinsulate) lining.

Any sort of Marmara coat that doesn't cost 500 euro plus? I'm still in uni and would love something that's ideally in the sub 100 euro range
|
Well I don't unfortunately but someone linked to a similar one from banana republic, not sure if that's less that 100euro however.
What you need to consider is that a coat like this doesn't really fit in a university student's wardrobe. It's going to look out of place with jeans and sneakers because it's designed to be worn with suits and business casual.
|
uniqlo x j.sander had a nice looking one that might be more in your price range. The Banana Republic one isn't for skinny / slim people unfortunately.

Similar question here, perhaps more general. Looking for a coat - what's good for an anorexic-ally skinny guy such as myself? I have reservations that double breasted options would look too bulky, but happy to be proven wrong. Pea coat/duffel/top coat/etc.?
Would longer coats look ridiculous on someone who's 5'8 and 110? Should I stick with looking for half length or 3/4 options?
Brands that make slim coats welcome as well. Something dressier, can be worn over a suit. Similar budget.

Jcrew makes a top coat in 34S, but even that might be too baggy for you. Suitsupply is another brand that makes coats with suit sizes in mind.

Easiest way to go imo (not into fashion at all btw, but I know how to dress for cold weather) would be to buy any coat that you like which protects from the wind (cashmere and wool can do the trick, but most often than not doesn't) and put something quilted underneath. Or anything bulky. From the way you speak, and it's a common misconception, you seem to think that wool is in itself warm. It isn't. No fabric is. What good insulation does is trap the air around you (more air = more insulation, so thickness is key) and prevent wind (water too, but this ain't an issue under 0) from going in. These 2 roles are easier to fulfill with 2 garments than with one. Plus you get to wear your outerlayer all year long if you want.
How I do it (BEWARE, NOT FASHION AT ALL): Inner. This can't do shit in itself when there's any wind. Outer.
By the way, a good way to avoid bulk on the upperbody is to apply the same principle for your legs. Get windproof pants and some wool underpants, and you can remove quite a bit of insulation on your upperbody for the same result. Also, cover your head/neck. That's 40% of heatloss right there.
