If there's going to be equality among the sexes, then both sides need to work together for that equality. Laughing on nationwide television about how funny it is for a mans penis to not only be chopped off, but also ground up so that man can never have it again isn't helping social equality. It hurts it just as much as what you described above.

I completely agree with you, and that is a good point. The point that I was trying to make is that a small group of people does not represent "feminists" as a whole and in no way is reflective of how women feel about that man's misfortune. The wife was very wrong in doing what she did and should be punished regardless

Poor guy. He's gotta kill himself now.

All logic and sexism talk aside, I can easily find humor in this incident, but definitely not if it happened to a female. I actually find it odd that a lot of you guys are genuinely upset at that clip of The Talk.

Not sure if troll. In fact what you just said is the reason people are upset.
You cant say sexism talk aside then immediately say something that is sexist.

I got banned for "trolling" when I disagreed too. Funny how trolling is basically whenever one disagrees with the average joe. The fact is that this crappy tv show is not the final battleground in the war of the sexes. Those on "your side" continue to perpetuate this ridiculous point, which is what this man and myself continue to /boggle over. You mean somebody did something that is not fair? /plain-face

perpetuate this ridiculous point???? Would you please specify what point in particular is ridiculous?
You got temp banned for this post:
Yep, that's totally it man. That's why you keep repeating the same tired point that I just accused you of repeating, that's completely irrelevant to the topic. Pro-argument mang.
You also said to Leporello "you're strawmanning the most intelligent post in the thread in the process." (refering to Kiangani post). Who actually posted this Alright I got warned for my last post so I guess I'll say this. This is not news. This is not a discussion topic. There is nothing worthwhile to discuss, because 1. no one should be offended by what some ho on TV thinks is funny. I've laughed at shit that other people probably take pretty seriously, and guess what? No one cared. Because it's not important. Anyone who is offended by a chuckle needs to chill the fuck out and this shiner within the same quote Here is the fact of the matter: penises are funny. Vaginas aren't very funny, boobs aren't very funny, fallopian tubes are actually hilarious but that's besides the point. We live in a culture where middle schoolers have a game where they yell penis really loud and laugh. It's called the penis game. And it's funny because you yell penis really loud. See the point I'm making here? It's not funny because a man went through a horrible amount of pain both physical and mental, it's funny because his DICK GOT CUT OFF
What It seems like to me is this: You see the behaviour of the people on 'The Talk' as fine, and in fact enjoyable. While the rest of us who cannot seem to "chill out" see it as sexist and horrible. Worthy of them been taken off the Air. Why do people get so upset? This wasn't just some private conversation. This was television. Watched by millions of people. If it was a private online show. Hardly anyone would get upset.
Next time you want to say "it's funny because his DICK GOT CUT OFF" on day time television to millions of viewers. See how confident you can stand in your views.
And remember this isn't a made up story. This is real life, taking enjoyment out of another persons immense suffering and humiliation doesn't make you a "chill" person. It makes you a disgusting human being.

These are just hack jokes to get some easy laughs. It was nice to see that one woman put a more serious tone to the whole thing, but then Sharon dropped another hack joke, for some easy laughs.
In a world where an actor gets kickbanned from Grey's Anatomy for calling one of his co-actors a faggot in the locker room, I certainly think that Sharon's hack jokes were just as inappropriate. She was the one to egg on the jokes, after that woman from the audience blurted out that the guy deserved it or whatever.
The case itself is very extreme, which makes it seem almost unreal. It has happened before in other countries though. But such a thing is definitely premeditated, as something like a dick doesn't get cut off all that easily (there was this cannibalism story a few years back). If you were 'only' going to kill the guy, at least he wouldn't have to live out his life with extreme traumas. Despicable.
Rape is - in my eyes - quite equivalent to this situation, the only difference being that a woman has to live with mental trauma, not so much the physical. Violating one's private regions as punishment for them violating your own doesn't sound like a long stretch. Taking it off completely is pushing it though :p

I'm not sure where to begin. Between your reading comprehension (hilarious, really, considering the number of posts I have made repeating that same point over and over, Kia too, which you have obviously read), the guilt trip over arguments that aren't mine (this is called a strawman, precisely what the person who replied to Kia was doing), the selective quotes (it's seriously making me rofl all over myself that you took the time to cut out the very same points you are asking me to give you), and then a bunch of fallacious moralist nonsense about how I'm a bad person because I think you're wrong.
I can't be any more clear than I already have. It is endlessly boggling to me that despite all attempts to throw it into your face you can't see past the tip of your own viewpoint to realize there are other arguments in this thread besides what constitutes a tasteful joke.

The reason that female genital mutilation is less okay to laugh at is because it happens so often in other parts of the world and is a serious problem. The same can't be said about males, unless you consider circumcision to be genital mutilation, which most people don't. This is a freak incident and was treated as such, even if it was an insensitive treatment.
Wait are people really calling for a protest? Protest something that matters or just don't watch the show... who's really harmed by these jokes?
I really dislike feminism for a number of reasons but I think some of the men in this thread are committed to the same kind of intellectual tunnel vision
edit: clarity

Your positions are not mine, (thank christ). Ignorant people will continue being ignorant, and no amount of political distancing matters in the end.
Why do you think that politicians denounce extremists on their side of the spectrum? Why do you think that religious leaders denounce those who claim to speak for them but don't? Why do you think that scientists denounce quacks who claim they have the support of the scientific community?
Distancing matters with all forms of group membership, political or not. That's a normal part of how we as a society communicate. If you condone extremists in your group, then they will be considered part of your group. If you don't like it, that's cool for you, but that doesn't change the fact that it's how we communicate group membership.
And FYI, being male isn't a voluntarily selected identity like 'feminist' or 'Republican' or 'Muslim', so it's not a parallel as you seem to believe.

I agree that self-proclaimed feminists displaying misandry on national tv is not evidence of feminism gone awry.
A lack of feminist outcry at this misandry, when they're supposed to stand for gender equality is evidence of feminism gone awry.

If you frequent feminist spaces, then you might be familiar with the feminist term "Oppression Olympics". Don't play it. It doesn't matter who has it worse. That doesn't make misogyny or misandry okay, the same way that blacks having it worse than whites doesn't make it okay for proponents of racial equality to support or condone black-on-white violence.

I didn't find any part of this even remotely funny. I was angry, disappointed and shocked by what I saw on that talk show. As it's been said dozens of times, if the roles were reversed and it was a man cutting off his wife's breasts, the world would be crucifying him.
Fucking disgusting.

i don't really care that much abou the frivolity with which they're treating it. while i don't agree or find it funny.. the story really makes me wince.. tv shows do this sort of thing all the time.
but yeah, if the story had been about a woman getting a breast cut off, there wouldn't even be enough media in the world to cover how badly they'd be getting reamed for it

STOP POSTING IN THIS THREAD! I GET SHIVERS EVERYTIME I READ THE TITLE!!!!!!

I'm a female and there's nothing funny about cutting off a man's penis just because he simply filed for divorce. Despite what the reasons were for divorce, there were definitely more humane ways to settle this to show her distaste towards the divorce (obviously). This story is downright outrageous and the women laughing about this is inappropriate.
I understand why women would laugh at this. We laugh at the metaphorical idea but not the literal. It's like when men abuses the word "rape" by saying "raping some noobs" etc etc and find it funny. The idea of cutting off a man's penis is just as funny as the word "rape". Oh, society. How cynical we can be sometimes.

It doesn't matter if you find it funny, because as rational beings, we can look at that and realize how wrong it is that we're ingrained with such a violent double standard, and we can recognize that the media, popular culture, etc. is responsible for this, because after all, laughter is a social construct.

The jokes were definately in bad taste and completely insensitive to that man and amyone close to him. However I'm not really offended by it. I think it just shows what times we live in now, where comedians/entertainers try to be as irreverent and politically incorrect as they can get away with.

Which is fine if not for the fact that you can't get away with making a joke out of female genital mutilation, and yet you can with male genital mutilation.

What? Laughter is basically the opposite of a social construct because its genetic and people laugh regardless of their particular culture.
I think I'm getting trolled lol
