That's the challenge for a literary translator, and to be honest, there comes a point where there is simply no way to properly translate the poetry over. In most cases, the translated work ends up being its own sort of creation apart from the original piece (Ezra Pound's translations of Chinese poetry into English are a good example). Beyond vague generalities, the challenges in translation are going to depend on the languages at issue.

The correct answer is that you can't. You can make a work of art that is inspired by and might be fairly similar to the original work--but its not a "translation" in the strictest sense.

This is because poetry is essentially sculpting a language to produce something unique and inherent to that language. its not just a rhyme scheme, but often times it is twisting and expanding the contexts of the words involved to expand or constrict their meanings as necessary. For the most part, translating it into another language removes that context and that cultural baggage. A word in one language will not necessarily have the same weight in another language.

You can get close, or you can get close to the idea of what that would be like. but you can't really translate poetry.

I think that many people generally under-appreciate the problems of translation in general.

A nice example is Terry Pratchett's Discworld - it has been known for quite some time among the Czech publishers that it is a great thing, but nobody dared to try it, because they couldn't find a good enough translators and were afraid of the poor reception in case of sub-par translation. Then suddenly one publisher came up with this guy, who eventually translated the whole of Pratchett's work into Czech and it became hugely popular and a goldmine for the publisher. Interestingly, during his first meeting with Pratchett, the translator needed ... a translator! He wasn't fluent in spoken English at all, he was just that good in written Czech that his works are a masterpiece - and he also studied the original well enough to remain faithful to it, but with the help of dictionaries and such. He re-worked a lot of the jokes so that they actually work naturally in Czech, making it a really great experience in our language.

I have seen several Czech versions of Shakespeare and they often look extremely different to each other. I guess lyric poetry is gonna be even more extreme in this regard and a lot of works will simply remain elusive to anyone who doesn't perfectly command the language. It is also said that you haven't really read the Quran unless you are fluent in Arabic.

that makes some type of sense. So a play like Molliere then would be more the translator trying to replicate the feel of the play rather than copy it?

now that I think about it philosophy has this problem a lot too, especially when dealing with philosophy of language

also the larger sense of what your saying would apply to all works s as well and not just poetry I think

Wherever there aren't regulations against head covers.

Outside of practical reasons or respect (like in a church), you are the only person that has any right to determine what is acceptable for you to wear.

An extreme example of this are translations of Joyce's Finnegans Wake. Finnegans Wake is completely untranslatable due to invented words, multilingual puns and allusions and its experimental structure.

Attempts to translate it really focus on emulating the feel of the piece. The Chinese version has footnotes explaining the background of most of the words.

Both Alice in Wonderland and the Hunting of the Snark were translated all over. Probably with similar footnotes, though.

The oldest bits of the Bible are some really old poetry: the Song of the Sea and the Song of Deborah. They are hugely variant in translation because of the difficulty in rendering the poetry. Like most ancient poetry, they don't actually rhyme, they are defined by rhythm, which is obviously impossible to render in translation. Some translations try to preserve the feeling of poetry, and end up quite inaccurate. Others preserve meaning, but obviously lose all poetry.

What if fluidrone is actually a poet in some exotic language and communicates with TL using google translate?

Apparently they did a big upgrade of google translate yesterday or something, a new AI or something. The new is is supposed to be much better according to reviews. So if that's the case, we should expect him to be significantly more coherent when he comes back.

Not that I'll be reading his posts, but you know... someone that does could test the theory in that way.

But somehow I believe he will continue to troll the mods by walking on the edge of getting banned in the most silly ways he can come up with.

Is Western Sahara a dangerous destination for travel, in particular if you plan to visit remote areas, spend nights there and wander around with a telescope and a long lens on a camera?

Is it a good idea to travel into such destination when you are getting weird seemingly neurological symptoms in the last few days, but have no idea if there is something really wrong with you or it is all just psychological?

I know, hard questions, that's why I have set on a mission to answer them.
