First of unlike what most of the world beleive and what Londoners like to think... London =/= England.
Also we have had just had the driest 6 months on record after the coldest winter for a long long time. Were I live (Birmingham) we must of only had 7 or so days in the last 6 months where it has rained for any length of time during the day.

At least you're spreading misinformation. We have 9 years of obligatory school. That's from the age of 7 to 16, not 18.

In Norway we have something called "pant" which is a sort of tax (I guess) on bottles and cans bought.
You pay an added fee (e.g 1 kroner for small bottles that cost around 15kr) which is basically a deposit. If you "return" the bottle to the store (or any store with a type of scanning machine) you get that money back. It's a pretty nifty way to encourage recycling and bums sometimes collect the bottles to earn a little cash lolol.
Other than that Norwegians are generally pretty good at English. Not many tv shows are dubbed to Norwegian (including some cartoons) and I think that helps a lot.

Apart from the obvious facts (pot, clogs, dikes & euthanasia), there are several interesting tidbits about Holland.
There are more bicycles than people.
Amsterdam holds the largest amount of nationalities out of any city in the world.
30% of the children are born at home.
If you ever arrive on Schiphol Airport, go ahead and realize that you're 4.5m below sea level.

We also got a similar system here in germany. You "pay" 0.08 € for a glass bottle (mostly beer or mineral water), 0.15 € for a plastic bottle and 0.25 € for a PET bottle or a can.

Sorry france, but you lose out on sheer variety? The italian cuisine as a whole is just sooo varied, nothing compares, worldwide. You clearly dont know the french kitchen, since its very varied. The funny thing is that most comon things you eat are from the french kitchen but one of they most famous things (croisant) isn't french.
I'm pretty sure that most chefs admire the depth, variety, and developed-ness of Chinese cuisine the most. Every Chinese province has a completely distinct cuisine with entirely different staples and culinary traditions. Chinese court cuisine is highly developed and has a history that extends back to a time when Europeans were nibbling with their fingers, implementing every edible piece of flora and fauna that the Chinese could find. The understanding of different flavours is unparalleled.
When Europeans were still feasting on bread and roasted animals, Chinese chefs already unlocked the fragrances of every spice in the Old World.
"French" cuisine was basically introduced to France by Catherine de' Medici from Florence when she married the king of France.
It's a little insulting to compare the history or variety of Italian or French cuisine to that of China, considering one of them has been developed continuously over what . . . . four thousand years.

Same here. I don't think it is uncommon.

Is there ANYWHERE else this kind of ridiculous legal finagling is possible?? Depends on how you word it but civilians hurting criminals is probably generally illegal in most countries unless it's clearly self defense etc.
I'm just going through all the posts, so I'll try to think of something good for the US as I go along, but I just wanted to comment really fast
I think in the US it can be taken a step further. It is possible for a trespasser or burglar to sue their victims if they're hurt in any way during the incident. This includes things like stepping on the broken glass from the window they just smashed, slipping and hitting their head on a counter, or falling from the skylight and breaking their leg.

I'm not English but I love England very much. The people are nice and the weather is okay apart from the rain... drizzles like all the time...
I for one, adore the Brit mannerisms XD. Maybe I've been lucky all these while ...

Only in cases of gross negligence or extreme violence does this happen. You watch too much Daredevil.
The only time someone gets in trouble for harming a criminal is when they go above and beyond the current threat. For example, someone makes a menacing look in your direction and you shoot them. In most cases you're allowed, in the US, to escalate "one degree". What this means is that if someone is violent towards you and is trying to beat you up with their fists you can knife them. Similarly, if someone pulls a knife on you, you're allowed to shoot them. In some cases this does not apply.
If someone 140 lbs is trying to attack someone who is 210 lbs with just their fists, the 210 lb person is expected to just swat them away. This is waived, however, if the 140 lb person has the appearance of being trained in hand to hand combat. It can get a little confusing, but so long as you're not shooting people in the back for trespassing or knifing someone who's vastly smaller than you, you'll be fine. I should point out here that for the defender, only the appearance of an advantage for the aggressor is required in order to escalate the degree of violence, not an actual advantage.
Edit: Also, if you don't have training with a gun, it's considered an attempted kill for any shot fired.

They may agree but the US still have a grudge on us about that ;p
lolwut? The US has no trouble with France. Once you stopped opposing us just for the sake of trying to make yourselves look like more of a world power than you were we stopped being annoyed by it.
No one in the US thought Chirac was talking big because of principle, we thought he was doing it to score some cheap global and particularly European popularity for France that wouldn't last long, and it hasn't.
Now that Sarkozy has brought the relationship back to the "cordial but independent" atmosphere of most of the post-war era we're practically joined at the hip, look at Libya! That was all Sarko saying "Oui oui!" and the president saying "sure if you say so!"

I like this idea. Here in Canada when you buy (for example) a can of something and it costs, let's say, 1,50$ and you return it to any store that allow refunds, it gives you 0,05$ or sometimes 0,10$.
It would be better (imo) if the can would cost 2,50$ but they give you 1$ back if you return it. That would make people think about returning their cans or bottles instead of throwing them away.

So, for other french people, Chinese food is probably more varied than French one (really not sure about Italian one, but it's fucking delicious). Anyway it's omething to be proud of, but no need to say "our food is so the best in the world". One funny stuff though is that we managed to put in on Unesco Cultural Listing, which I find hilarious Our cheese is the best that I know of though, as there are so many variety most of them awesome. Other country that have good/decent cheese are Italy, Switzerland England (yep good cheddar is good) and vaguely Holland.
Anyway on some more intersting trivia : -France is the only country I know where trotskism has been a relevant political form, and that for many years, averaging 10% in elections in total. Being divided in 3 camps has not help them much though. -On the same subject, we had a socialist prime minister (Lionel Jospin), who entered the PS to infiltrate it, as he used to be a lambertist trostkist. -A lot of people are in fact quite proud of what Napoleon did, and official French historiography is very lenient with what he did. -Same stuff, we tend to forget a lot the bad part of the French Revolution. -While our children are on average not that good at maths, there is a lot of emphasis put on it in school for historical reasons. This has resulted in having 11 Medal Fields, second behind the US (13). My maths teachers often both that Paris and its suburd have the highest concentration of maths resdearcher and Medal Fields in the world (I'm not sure about that, as quite a lot worked at Princeton I believe). -We "won" the hundred year war despite losing every single major battle during it. -We have a pretty interesting system of prepa/grandes écoles, which is a bit complicated to explain. The reason is funnier, as that was created to bring down university considered too religious and powerful during the French Revolution. -Elky is French !
For our way of life, it's pretty standard for western countries I think.
