Come on, over one riot? Do you have to generalize over one riot? Really?
You have riots in Sweden too, give us a chance.
Its not the riot itself. Its the reason why you guys rioted.
Over a fucking game? Two teams play for the sake of competition and the team you like loses and your first thought is, 'fuck, well gotta go break private/public property."
LOL. If I was in charge or the owner of any of these places i'de be shooting in the croud.
This is why im so disgusted by sports like hockey/basketball/football/american football. The fans are so simple minded and power hungry is repulsive.
This whole post makes you sound incredibly stupid and ignorant. No offense intended, but that's how it seems.
The rioters obviously weren't real fans as its been shown in every news story. Many of these people are just anarchists who were waiting for a big event like this to riot. Maybe 1% of the rioters were actual fans. The rest were people just looking for an excuse to do something stupid. So please don't try and group real fans with those people.
Also if you were shooting the crowd you would be worse than the rioters themselves. You criticize them and then stoop to a level even lower than them? It doesn't make sense.
Ignorant in what way? In Texas if you step on private property the owner has the right to shoot. All of the state legislator in Texas cant be ignorant i'm sure of it.
And how does pulling statistics from the air make you any less ignorant than I?
Look at any of the videos on youtube they were sporting jerseys of the team. All the news reports also say "Fans" not "Anarchist."
Please don't trow around the ignorant card so loosely when your post was so half-assed.
Just wearing a team sweater doesn't make you a true fan. Do you think actual hockey fans were the ones who prepared molotov cocktails before the game even began?
Fan or True fan is irrelevant. Maybe the fans in the riots believe you arnt a true fan because you took the loss so passively? Is that what you are really here to argue? "These guys arnt true fans becuase I am a true fan! And I would never do something so idiotic!"
Hockey team loses game. Immediately after people (fans) dressed in their attire start destroying property. How in there do you make the connection that they arnt 'true fans.'
Kind of shameful for Canada, BC and Vancouver. They spend millions on tourism and the city gets a bad name world wide because some ignorant drunks decided to start a riot. Out of all things, a riot over hockey, come on.. Disgusting.
Personal Story I went to six of the final seven games, missed game 3. This game was by far the most packed, in all the other games there was no rioting or hooligans. When I first got there at 5:00 they had sealed off the inner city so no one could get in. People were leaving but the security guards wouldn't let anyone enter. After roaming around I found an entrance with no security guards (??) to check my backpack. Then I got in!! About 5 minutes into the game. From there it was super packed! You felt like you were in a river and had to ride the current in order to move. By the end, I was literally 20 feet to the right of the car in the opening post (2nd picture and last picture on page 1). There were so many people there it was crazy. Like I had trouble breathing because I was too close to the people around me and the body heat of everyone was suffocating. By the start of the second period I had some room, I could stretch my arms and spread my feet apart (finally!). It was pretty much a mosh pit for the first 20 minutes of the game, with no one jumping.
Some scary moments: 1) Guy pushing people around him got threatened and shoved by like 6 people. 2) full bottles of pop (750mL) being thrown into the crowd in the 1st period 3) People pelting fans in trees with garbage/bottles 4) Other debris being thrown 5) Pot smokers (gross!) 6) People threatening Boston fans at Roger arena "I will kill that b****", "Thomas' kids and wife are dead", add your own expletives 7) People mentioning that they will riot, regardless of outcome and that they were there to cause trouble. 8) At the end of the game people throwing (some glass) bottles at the tv and disrupting the image (georgia street) 9) People jumping on the car (vw golf) then flipping it over (same one as in 2nd picture on opening page and last picture on opening page). I left after that.
Thoughts: I in no way believe that Canuck fans were cause of the riot. I believe it was people who went to the streets to cause trouble whether we one or lost. They just wanted to create mayhem and see how much crap they can get away with. Jumping on Police cars, lighting police cars, looting, etc. Lots of mob mentality and that is a catalyst for more people to get into it. Disappointed!
How it could be handled better. 1) No cars in the downtown core. Why was there a golf on Georgia and Hamilton street? All cars should be towed by 10:00am. 2) There needed to be more police, 200 was not enough. (500?) 3) Stores should have purchased metal bars or some other deterrent to stop people from getting in to their stores 4) Water cannons!! With dye. 5) Some annoucements after the game that everyone needs to clear out in one hour. Then after that hour, police will come in force with water cannons(!!), dogs, flashbangs, smoke grenades (forget the exact name, the ones that make your eyes sting), shields, etc 5a) I am not sure what they would have done if the Canucks won because then everyone (innocent included) would have headed to Granville Street 6) More big tv screens so people had more room at each screen (not so crowded)
Changes for next time: No tvs or people allowed in downtown at all. Seems sad because it was a great experience (except for game 7 because it was too full). But fool me once (1994) shame on you, fool me twice (2011) shame on Vancouver.
Hope: Today there were hundreds of volunteers in Vancouver helping clean up the streets. My friend on facebook just posted some really cool pictures. Those people are what I think about when I think about how awesome the Vancouver is. Not the scum who who in their narcissism did whatever they wanted with little or no regard for others. Those people have no self-control.

Ya ya post hoc ergo proctor hoc etcetc.
I watched every single Canucks playoff game this year and last. I've supported them for my whole life. I would consider myself a true fan. How do those people who rioted fall under the category of 'fan'? They decided to start a riot no matter who won and came solely to destroy things. You are just broadening the meaning of the word to fit your own conclusions.

The word is so broad in its own definition. It has a subjective meaning and is subject to change in of its self for every individual.
So fine they arnt Canucks fan then they are hockey fans. That was my original point anyways.

How are pot smokers scarier then people threatening to kill Tim Thomas and his family?
This is crazy. I was in Vancouver last Summer visiting family and it was an absolutely gorgeous city. It's a shame to see this happen. Why trash your beautiful town?!
Isn't there a bit of unrest in Canada due to their whole political shenanigans? I can easily see a small group of people doing something dumb, and it just ballooning out of control.
I got stuck in the middle of a riot in Barcelona, when Barcelona won the treble last summer... Riot started when cops showed up in riot gear and were just standing around, and with that many people around, its very easy for 1 person to do something stupid(in this case it was throwing bicicles at cops), then everything hitting the fan, as the riot cops started moving in from severaldirections and people paniced.
The riot turned out about how I thought it would. I stayed up late last night watching all the awesome footage. Wish I could of been down there to get a better view of all the action.
What surprises me so much is that people didn't think this would happen. A riot was so damn easy to predict, I would of been shocked if one didn't happen. The fucking police are so damn incompetent it is embarrassing. The police chief admitted he didn't think a riot would happen. How could he be that stupid?
It's sad. People riot and fight for their rights in order to have a better life. These lowlives riot because their team lost a hockey game. I think every Vancouver rioter should swap lives with a Libyan... See what it really means to fight for something, not something as meaningless as a hockey game.

Greeks - Your government is broke and can't fix itself. Egypt - Prime minister is terrible and people are being sent into forced disappearance WWII style Libya - Your leader is killing civilians Canada - We lost the Stanley cup.
I witnessed only one major riot in my country and it also had a political/economical background. But I guess those are the joys of living on a rich country; you destroy things that you may end up paying with your own taxes just because of the most banal thing you can imagine. And don't play the passion card on me, my country is also very "passionate", but in cases like this you normally see the stadium and adjacents getting damaged, not people rampaging over the whole city.
Also, there is one thing that surprises me. Don't they have laws, judges, jails and stuff in Canada? Because I saw a lot of people with the face uncovered and nonchalantly posing for cameras. Even if drunk you have to be incredibly stupid to do that.
What country do you live in? Do I have to remind you what happened when Nueva Chicago was demoted to the B league last time?
I see Mauro Martin with his face uncovered every time I go to the stadium, and he has done worst things than burn a couple of cars and break some windows so please stop making ridiculous and untrue statements.
A battle royal between factions that do as they want with the approval and support of the police and politicians sure is the same thing as this, right? That's why I used the word normally, to equate things. If you want me to post the differences I'll gladly do.
I saw pictures of Hitler with face uncovered; your point? Martin is "smart" enough to have contacts that protect his ass and I don't think those random canadian do, therefore, they are stupid and my statement is true.
Bostero tenías que ser.
It is ridiculous that you are trying to argue that Argentina is more civilized than Canada, but still:
1. There was no "Battle Royal" between factions. It was the Chicago supporters versus the police, which spilled out of the stadium onto the streets to the point of completely blockading the main transit highway in Buenos Aires. One person died who was not part of the fight/disturbances. Clearly a lot more serious than what happened in Canada where nobody died. Inform yourself before you continue to misinform.
2. Mauro Martin, as well as Di Zeo, are known criminals who have/had warrants for their arrest. They still go to the stadium unhindered. This is clearly a lot more serious than some canadian vandals showing their faces in public´
I will derail this conversation no further, I hope you see how stupid your argument is, that Canadians are more uncivilized than Argentines, lol.
Shouldn't have called it battle royal, true. It was more like a hunting of Tigre fans. Still, this is a mayhem on the downtown and Mataderos is not ours. And the dead guy (hited by stones) argument is pretty lame considering they even have stabbed people here. Totally worst event because someone missed by 2 inches, yes. Let's ignore the rest of the damage.
I talked about them being stupid for not cover their faces while comiting a crime and you brought a measure of the gravity of their acts. You derailed this on your own.
Keep being a delusional worshiper of other countries. We are a shithole and the rest of the world is ranboiws and cookies, sure.
