If you have the skills to back it up, any name is fine. It's only annoying when people suck (or even if they have average skill) any they try to sound intimidating/serious.
Also, no one seems to mention how annoying the prefix, "Legit," is.
The only really, "tryhard," name I ever used was a one that my clan (the Cripples) told me I had to change it to. But to be a smartass, I made it, "ACrippledEagle," because I had just watched the episode of Scrubs where J.D. tries to jump from a couch to a counter to win a bet, and falls flat on his face. Not that try-hard, now that I think about it
I don't know if anyone else remembers, but when the mini series Band of Brothers was popular, half the people in every FPS were named Cpt. Winters or Lt. Speirs or some other character from the show. I played MoHAA at the time so it was doubly bad since it was a WWII game already.

There was a German counter-strike player named Sniperwolf. Story: + Show Spoiler +
Let's just say he was considered to be one of the nerdiest guy (the heavy metal, computer-gaming and rundown type of nerdy, not the math type of nerdy) living on the planet. In CS there is the tradition of having a round played with knifes, and telling everyone to drop their weapons before that, saying "drop or son of a b*tch", "drop or gay", or something like that. German Mouz team replaced that by saying "drop or sniperwolf" (gaining a lot of laughter of german spectators, and severe confusion of international opponents :D)
Any kind of nicknames and/or clantags containing the following: Ninja, Killer, Assassin, Black, Dragon, Night, Knight, Order, Fragger, 1337/Elite, Owner, [any name of military special forces unit], X (a highlighted one or several), special forces or any kind of national tag (such as [ger]) usually are a) young kids b) bad players
exeptions exist, such as German XlorD who chose his name when he was young. However, once he went pro it sticked to him, so when he grew embarassed of it and tryed to change it to "Ixi" (his nickname made from his nickname, used by fans) he was unsucessful.
Oh man, the XxXx and Dragon Killer Phantom whatever isn't the worst. It's the colors man. Quake had people using the worst color combinations and whnevr you played on a clan server and everyone had the same colors. omg.
I've never really understood online names and aliases. I must prefer someones real name instead. I think it's one of the reasons gaming isn't taken very seriously. But more on topic, anything referencing drugs just makes me facepalm.
Generally anyone who takes a name from a well known established lore character or famous players.
Any variation of Inuyasha, Arthas, Illidan, Legolas or Sephiroth are not original or cool. I don't mind if people make references with their names, but c'mon try to be a little creative.
Not exactly a gamertag, but we have a one-man metal magazine coming out every 2-10 months here in Denmark called "xBrutalized Honestyx" written in english, set up in word, with the most irrate and angry reviews I have ever seen. It is awesome.

Not really it's just one decent word and his clan tag.
AFAIK, slayers wasn't his clan back in BW.
Although I'm not saying the name was great I believe his fave player was SlayerS but he wanted to beat him. So he was SlayerS_'Boxer'
