In the past 2 years I started trying out some weird foods. Frog legs, chicken gizzards, cow tongues, and pig blood. It's really not as bad as long as you dont think about it. It started when my friend ordered for me in a korean restaurant and ordered me pig blood while telling me it was tofu. As I downed the seemingly delicious black colored tofu, the waiter came by and asked me 'how is the pig blood sir?' When my friend started laughing, I nearly puked at first, but held it in and finsihed the rest of the dish like a boss. My father once ate the piece of monkey brain after it was killed in front of him in a street vendor. Considered a delicacy in those streets I assume. Anyway, share your story of the strangest thing you'ved eaten.

Also,

Fried tarantula while i was over in cambodia.

They just take a tarantula and fry it they dont even remove the bristly hairs, i ended up eating several of the legs and the whole abdomen (managed to pass the head off to someone else).

Tried not to think to much of what was in the abdomen i was eating such as what the spider had been eating previously or all the web and shit in there.

I've eaten all those you've mentioned except the fresh fried fish. Have you tried fresh octopus? I haven't tried but want to. It's newly killed so the suction cups still work. Gotta be careful to chew it, though.

Yeah, I choked on one of those things! Can't say I eat weird food, I think the octopus is the weirdest.

That must be so painful for the fish.

My friend has tried fresh octopus once. He told me that it was really good and I'd probably enjoy it. He's also eaten spiders on several different occasions. He says that they don't taste to bad you just have to not think about what you're actually putting into your mouth. That being said I would probably eat a spider if it was cooked and didn't look to spidery XD

In Africa I ate crocodile, zebra, ostrich (tastes just like chicken!) and a few others, pretty standard fare I suppose.

Cow tongue, cow intestines, chicken feet, scorpions, goat testicles, snake, cow stomach, pig feet, pig ear (favorite), chicken gizzards, octopus. There's probably more, but can't think off the top of my head.

Pig blood is quite distasteful, but my family buys it from the restaurant not very often though... Literal sense its just referred as "blood tofu" since its just congealed blood in block form, maybe its comparable to blood sausages? Except for all the additives and fillers like the European type.

You should try eating balut or century egg plain, the flavor and smell is pronounced. Its an acquired taste but raw monkey brain is just wrong. :/

edit: Eating chicken hearts is one but gizzards seems to be a staple in many countries.

No way, ostrich is red meat. It doesn't taste like chicken at all...

I tried snake, duck blood (similar to the pork blood OP described), jellyfish, sea cucumber.

Weirdest stuff I tried was caterpillar fungus (冬虫草). It's kind of fungus that lives in the ground. It can infect big caterpillars, germinate in them, kill and mummify them. Then it grows out of the body of the mummified caterpillar.

edit : poster above me reminded me of century eggs. I hate too see an egg with blueish green yolk.
Also I see many people posting chicken gizzard as weird food, I don't find it weird at all ^^

Sadly, this is probably true, lol.

I've eaten really really fresh and raw seafood in Jeju, Korea.

The sashimi was excellent. You could tell it'd just been pulled from the tank and that it had been caught very, very recently.

The sea slugs and mussels still moving on the plate, though, not so much. I couldn't handle that and didn't eat it. Our tour guide called me a bitch, rofl.

I have eaten both pigs blood and balut. I am filipino what do you expect?

as far as the pig's blood goes, it tasted alright but I don't know if it was that or something else in the soup I was eating but I had major diarrhea afterwards.

Sea cucumbers are a bitch to cook and fairly expensive.

edit: IIRC, its flavorless too.

Caterpillar fungus costs like 10 times as expensive as sea cucumber. I never had to cook sea cucumbers, I only force my self to eat them because they're expensive and wasting them would be an offense to the person who offered it to me. You're right, it's tasteless, but the texture is awful.

Weirdest food I've eaten is either...Sea Urchin, Jellyfish(you eat the tentacles, they're boiled generally), or...maybe goat I guess? Also, woo first post and it has nothing to do with Starcraft..!

That's quite a resume right there! How are scorpions prepared? Fried?

I've eaten frog (which I hear isn't so uncommon in certain countries). I've eaten pickled pigs feet on a dare. I've also eaten rattlesnake (caught, killed, and cleaned on the spot), and I suppose crawdads are kind of a rarity depending on where you live. I actually remember eating a lot of crawdads on camp-outs—boiled over a fire in a Coke can with the top cut off. But they're much tastier when they're done up right in of those huge-ass pots with potatoes and corn and spices and whatnot.

If it were not so, I would have told you.

Anyone want to tell me what is the flavor and texture of sea urchin similar to? Never tried it myself, since I dont really fancy raw seafood and such. I dont even like sashimi or most sushi. :/

If it's fresh is very rich and creamy. I can't think of anything that tastes similar to it though...

I love sashimi and just about everything. I really don't like Sea Urchin and it's about the only food I don't like. It's like eating a cold wet sponge that is incredibly soft. You can almost drink it.

Blood dishes shouldnt be all that weird for people. I mean black pudding is pretty much a worldwide dish in a couple different forms. Haggis is probably something most people would consider weird as well though.

When I had it it was like that but it's got a very sweet taste to it. Almost like..maple syrup mixed with oyster..sort of? I love almost all foods too and I have to say I was kind of surprised by how much I disliked it considering what a delicacy it's considered to be. Kinda dissapointing. =/

Raw herring, which is custom in Denmark. Cow tongue as well, but otherwise I'm really kind of a pussy when it comes to strange foods. I had plenty of chances in Bali, but I always pussied out.

I really couldn't eat that fish thing like that.

No way. I mean, if I'm dying of hunger, that's a different story but I'd rather walk down the street and buy some chicken McNuggets. (Even if the nuggets are unhealthier with chemicals... at least there's no twitching head)

Sea cucumbers,pig blood,chicken blood,pig intestine,pig stomach,pig liver,chicken liver,chicken gizzard,Pig ear,Pig crispy skin,Chicken feet

Proud to be chinese :D All tasted good to me tbh,if cooked right.

That doesnt even scratch the list of "wierd" stuff that is somewhat normal cuisine in Chinese food.
My Mum remembered eating snakes, armadillos, weasels, monkey brains, lizards etc lol.My mum said her father would just catch these creatures at the road side. Not that I will EVER eat them

My experience is fairly tame compared to most other responses in this thread, but I've eaten and enjoyed caramelized and chocolate covered grasshoppers. Absolutely delicious with the strangest texture that goes along really well with the candied exterior.

Basically it's kind of similar to the crunch you get with those Reese's sticks...

I didn't like pig intestines when cooked with Chinese cuisine. Love them in dinuguan, though.

I'm amazed that cow tongue, among other stuff, is considered weird by some people. It's pretty common in both Western and Asian dishes. I see lengua in many places.

i live in florida
ive eaten frog legs, crocodile, turtle, snake.
the frog legs were okay..i didnt really like it. same with crocodile, the taste wasnt very appealing to me but maybe it was the way the restaurant prepared it since i had both from the same place.

the turtle, my next door neighbor cooked it and it was AMAZING! seriously, snake taste fucking delicious. As for the turtle, well i was little and dont remember liking it, but id have to try it again

im also from colombia so maybe things that are typical for me might be weird for others. Blood sausage (morsilla in spanish) is delicious! its made with rice stuffed in it and its very good.

also, ive eaten chunchurria, its basically intestines, i dont know what animal though. maybe the chicken? it has a very distinct taste and some people dont like it, i like it alot however.

My mom used to be a social worker in colombia, (VERY different from social work here in the states) and she worked with a group of indians in colombia so she had to live with them and such. Anyways, she ate monkey, rabbit, snake, and she told me she ate something that resembled a large rat, but she doesn't recall the name.

ive eatenlots of sushi and whatever it is they stuff in it, lol half the time i eat sushi i eat alot of things that i have no idea what they are but its all delicious.
looking forward to trying out rabbit though. and i wanna try caviar just to get it out of the way.
Im cooler than the other side of the pillow.

That's probably because it's not common anymore, it's the same with any part of cows or pigs that's not good meat, people don't eat that because it's not necessary anymore. A hundred (or less) years ago it was absolutely commonplace to use every part of an animal you slaughtered, like making sausage from the blood, soup from the bones etc.

I've never had that dish with intestines. I love sucking the bone marrow out, though. It's usually a contest between me and my brother to see who would get it first.

The intestines I've had were in Sichuan cuisine with the spicy sauce. I guess it's because I don't like the texture unless its finely chopped like in dinuguan.

Could it be an urban Western thing? The "not good meat" makes some of the best dishes. I'm more familiar with various Asian cuisines, though. And I think pig bones in particular, is still widely used in ramen.

Well, discounting the strange factor that is having eaten MRE's (3 lies for the price of one.), I've had goat tacos in Mexico, some sort of really lean red meat in Iraq that definitely wasn't beef, and a custard pie with no sugar in it, courtesy my sister being an abysmal cook. That last may have been the strangest.

Besides the types of animals, which isn't all that weird imo, I think the weirdest food I've ever had is sweetbread. The texture and flavor is really unlike anything else I've had (despite the fried chicken look it has haha).

Another weird texture is blood sausage, but that's delicious if you can get past the fact you're eating coagulated blood.

I think the weirdest food I've eaten would have to be bull testicles, though I guess it's a pretty common tapas dish. Other than that I've had fried grasshoppers, crocodile, foie gras (not really weird) and springbok.

Durians. Not exotic in our region, but infamous to the West nonetheless. I never understood why people could find it smelly. Personally I think it smells pretty good.

Is there actually a point to cooking something alive? I don't get it. It couldn't possibly be any different to kill it and then immediately cook it? Why the added cruelty?

Sorry if the answer is in the video, didn't watch it because I don't want to see that.

Fresh octopus is awesome. I went to some little mob village in sicily where it was one of the featured meals in the fish market. So so good.

I tried all sorts of weird tapas in spain. I wimped on Ox tail soup or any of thse crazy bull nut dishes.

/regrets

sea urchin is pretty good too, though I didn't have it fresh. It was part of some pasta dish and some other things

Giant caterpillar (raw). They were always crawling around in our school (not in the disgusting way, but they were everywhere), we used to dare each other to each them (they were like maybe 10-20cm long).

Also eaten caramelized scorpion, but that wasnt really that bad. To me it's only really bad when the stuff you're eating is still alive :S Unless it's genitalia, i could never get myself to each that.
If wishes were horses we'd be eating steak right now.

That would theoratically be a tremendous good thing, as insects have more nutrition/cost it takes to make them, better for environment etc.

As for me, I haven't eaten much weird stuff, hard to get by in the Netherlands, not to mention expensive. I have eaten a cake made out of mealworms.

I've ate most of the things mentioned in the OP: frog legs, pig blood , cow tongue (those last 2 are actually fairly common in my house). Except live fried fish, though I guess it's fresh-er than just killing it and then frying it xP
Also ate crocodile's tail. Tasted like steaks.
Some pretty weird stuff I've heard about are live octopus, I think they eat it in Korea. Gotta admit I don't look forward to eat that.
And also from my home country (Italy): there's a region where they eat cheese with worms:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casu_marzu

Edit: Uhm, guess I should also include turtle. It's actually pretty tasty, cooked with plenty of onion rings.

That's pretty fucked up haha but I guess they do it as a form of garnish/art? Pretty gay, since you can't eat the head if you wanted to eat it fried.

Honestly I think I'd be a little bitch when it comes to weird food but the only crazy things I've eaten were cow tongue/stomach/intestines and when I first found out what I was actually eating I was a bit surprised but didn't think too much of it. I don't like tongue or stomach though, too chewy and annoying to eat, but I love intestines though. Oh and I guess Liver? That shit is nasty though.

yeah, "chou dofu" or stinky tofu
whole frogs
chicken feet
duck head
duck tongue
snails
pig tail
pig feet
cow intestine
raw ground beef (it's like a pate, I think it's Armenian)
"1000 year old egg"
various sashimi (squid, octopus, sea urchin gonads, etc)
"dancing" prawns (they're alive but you drown them in alcohol or something)
I also like peppers and hot food.

pretty adventurous eater I guess. Haven't tried balut ever...don't know if I'd like that. Haven't eaten much in the way of insects either, but I'm hoping to travel to china soon and maybe I can rectify that.

I'd love to try live octopus, from what I've heard, it's served with oil so the legs don't stick to your mouth/throat. I've eaten a cicada and alligator. I absolutely loved alligator, tasted better then chicken in my opinion :D

No flavouring, definitely home-made (was in a very famous French restaurant). Fortunately, it was part of a bigger dish but it was really really weird Did not liked it tbh.

Funny story...

I grew up in Zaire (now the Democratic Rep. of Congo). The two weirdest things I ate were:

Fried caterpillars

and

termites - not the little white ones, the "warrior" ones with the big crunchy head and sharp pinchers (ate them both raw and cooked). Also related, flying ants - the same termite family (both cooked and raw)

When I travelled around Southeast Asia I would always catch the night bus from town to town, it was way cooler in the evening and I would just sleep all night and wake up at my destination. Sometimes these busses would stop in the middle of the night at a market. Its weird you wake up and you dont really know where you are but they are herding you like cattle into this store where theres usually food/goods and a place you can go bio.

Me and my buddy would usually eat at these places and some of them had some weird ass things. I really dont know what half of it was that I was eating. I didnt want to know in most cases. Anyway the grossest thing I ate was some kind of intestines. We thought it was noodle soup but it was this weird chewy stringy texture. Im sure a lot of you have eaten weirder or grosser but it was a shock to me.

I've eaten all of these plus stuff like warthog. Ostrich tastes nothing like chicken. It is very very lean and high in protein. It's being touted here as a pretty healthy meat these days. Crocodile was by far the most disappointing. The stuff I had was quite fatty and the fat tastes pretty gross.

I've eaten lots of gamey stuff but never really got into the weird things. China is apparently big on odd food, they eat so many little birds and guts and stuff it wouldn't surpise me if they threw the traditional meat away so they could focus on the eyeballs and nostrils and stuff.

I tried this once, I'm sure its not really considered that weird but it was an expirience.

I've eaten alot of different kinds of meat, people I know from northern Canada regularly eat stuff like moose, wolf, bear all of which tastes relatively similar so that's not weird at all to me but I'm not sure that its available alot of places.

One thing I don't think I could stomach is insects, I've had cricket and that was far enough along the insect eating road for me...

I've eaten so many weird things that I don't even know where to start. I've begun to live by the rule that if it's tasty, I'm not going to ask what it is, as chances are that it would most likely ruin the dish for me...

So the weirdest thing I didn't like was, and I'm not quite sure, something like the pigs omentus major - the chinese people I was with couldn't quite explain to me what it was. But it was VERY rubbery and basicly tasted like chewing in a rubberband...

So true. Most things are really just looking weird. If you think about what it really is, most of the time you come to the conclusion that it's not that weird at all.

Let's cut to the chase here. If you can eat balut, durian and hong uh, nothing in this world will surprise you. And balut just looks intimidating. So you can narrow it down to two really if you're blind/don't care about visual.

That is so disrespectful to the freaking fish. I have no problem with killing and eating an animal, but there is absolutely no reason to do what they did in that video. Disgusting.

Rocky Mountain Oysters. Parents tricked me into eating this when I was a kid. That sad part is they taste good, not that I'd ever eat them again though.

Rattlesnake. Tastes like chicken!

Alligator. Also tastes like chicken!

I didn't mind that I was eating bugs, but they legitimately tasted awful.

That fried live fish looks DELICIOUS...
This might be me remembering incorrectly (as I remember hearing it while back), but don't fish not interpret pain like we do (as in, the fish knows it's being injured, but it doesn't feel, "Pain," if you know what I mean). I think I remember seeing it on Animal Planet, or something.

As for me, the weirdest thing was Ox Heart. It tasted rare (and bloody...), even though it appeared rather well-done.

Edit:
A lot of stuff that I considered decently normal are mentioned here...
I've also had:
Crocodile (my favorite meat EVER, BY FAR), Ostrich, Squid (and a shit ton of it...), Octopus ink on pasta, Ants (this one isn't that normal...), some grubworm things that live inside roots of trees in central Australia, and chicken blood soup.

If you EVER get the chance to eat crocodile, do it. It has a fishy-texture, but taste likes AMAZING CHICKEN (because they're dinosaurs)

Second Edit:

I've had alligator, which I assume tastes similar to crocodile. It really was delicious. It tasted like chewy, fatty, fried chicken, but much more dense.

This sums it up perfectly.

Yeah, cause there's no difference in killing an animal swiftfly versus eating it alive.

Do you care how the animals live aswell?

Do you care about the animals at the zoo? Do you care about the fishes in the aquariums? If you cared a whole lot about animals then perhaps you should kill yourself because every day a number of species die due to human encroachment.

The whole question of animal welfare is such a moot point. All I know is that meat is a necessity but frying an animal alive is not.

My fathers wife eats fried chicken embryos, i.e cracking the egg and frying it like you would with a normal egg.

The sound from her eating isn't very pleasant *crunch crunch*.

seaweed salad, most disgusting stuff ever.

I recently discovered a sushi bar in my small town, since then I've been going the menu up&down trying everything, because it's so tasty. =)

Anyway on the counter they have these boxes of seaweed salad, with all these vibrant colors from bright green to purple, covered with sesame and some dark dressing. That neon green stuff looks so tasty and since it's made by the same japanese people that invented sushi it must be good..right? Well, I really tried to eat it (it was somewhat expensive after all), but after only a few pieces I had to give up. It's a absolutely disgusting taste, that I can't even describe.

Worst thing about it, it made me burp for hours with the taste always coming back..and I only ate like 4-5 hand long leafs..most effective burp agent ever, if the taste wasn't so bad it would actually be fun. xD

Another thing was squid or octopus (dunno, was only tentacle xD) from the same sushi place, but I couldn't eat it..that stuff was made out of rubber. Chewed for minutes without success, gave up, nothings worth that much effort.

Makes me wonder how many people choke to death every year from fried squid rings. They must be like those old six pack plastic rings, that kill fish, but for people. xD

Well, after a short while even a fish must realize that it's eaten alive when it feels more and more heavy injuries/missing bodyparts everywhere, unless they're really dumb. Don't know about you, but even without pain it would certainly be enough to freak me out, gettin' eaten alive..a terrifying thought..

I don't see anything wrong with eating tongue, they are just like other meat except more tender, easier to chew.

I've had beef tongue, ox tail, ox knuckle, ox liver, pig legs/knuckle, pig ears, pig/cow intestines, frogs, raw beef, fried scorpions, octopus, duck/pig blood, swan, pigeon, sea cucumber, duck feet, jellyfish, snails, various types of mushrooms, certain bugs, turtle, squid, eels. edit: and crocodile

I might have had a bite of dog once, but I don't remember.

Strangely though, I haven't tried stinky tofu or any of those egg-type things.

speaking of fermented stuff, stinky tofu is absolutely delicious, so is century egg.

one of the very few things that i found repulsive in the past was natto. my aunt made it for me and she mixed it with an raw egg (common), i ate the whole packet anyway, but i felt like throwing up afterwards

after that...

a sandwich with something reminiscent of spam(the canned processed meat, not the dick pill mail), orange jelly and chocolate.
was not that bad actually, despite everyone else looking at me sideways, thinking i'm just trying to gross everyone out(the jelly and meat tasted horribly on their own, so they thought that I was just kidding)

My top 5 would definitely include:

5.) Labskaus (German stew consisting of everything that fell down near the kitchen during the past week)
4.) Fried insects (quite popular in Southeast Asia for unknown reasons)
3.) Haggis (Scottish national dish, also used as an insult for obvious reasons)
2.) Chilli-cheese hot dog with bacon-flavor from a food court in Louisville, Kentucky (contains equal parts of plastic, quicksilver, and synthetic flavors)
1.) Not chicken (served by a friendly waiter in a Thai cookshop - who claimed it was chicken)

Our tour guide called me a bitch, rofl.

yeah i highly doubt that

Ostrich burger was the least common thing I've eaten, I think...
It's just a little bit tougher meat than a regular beef burger.

And back in sixth grade, we dissected a squid, then cleaned it completely and fried/ ate it as calamari Mmmmm

There are places I hear in Vietnam and Cambodia where they put birds in there instead.

In the Yukon, it's a human toe as the worm wood.

I've eaten a crocodile burger (while I was at the zoo, go figure), and I often (once a fortnight or so) eat Kangaroo. Kangaroo is actually fantastic, though it can be tough because of course it's game meat. If you're used to eating beef (which is like the most tender red meat in the world) you'll probably find kangaroo too tough for you, and you have to be really careful not to overcook it or it becomes rubber. However it is delicious and I'd recommend it to anyone who comes to Australia.

I've also eaten emu, which tastes kinda like chicken. I'm proud to say that I think I live in the only country on the Earth which routinely eats both of the animals on its coat of arms.

Also I see many people posting chicken gizzard as weird food, I don't find it weird at all ^^

ah yeah, that's cordiceps. it's quite commonly eaten. i think it's said to have some medicinal properties? my friend always eats it when she's sick. it basically is a fungus that infects insects and causes them to climb onto the stalk of another plant and grip onto it with its mandibles (where presumably the environment is ideal for the fungus). then it kills the insect and grows from its corpse.

Just to list a few of the potentially odd things I have eaten. Some have been listed, some have not:
-Raw Horse (in Japan)
-Diamond Back Rattle snake (in Texas, my home state)
-Freshly killed octopus (Japan again)
-Natto in Japan (not necessarily odd but god aweful(its fermented soy beans(fermented is being kind to it, its more like rotting soy beans))
-Crocodile
-Emu (a friend's family raised them)
-I attempted the nearly born bird (I think the Filipino above me mentioned the proper name for it), but could not actually eat it. (But hey, I think its worth a mention)

There are a lot of meat products that I have eaten while I was in Asia that I did not know exactly what it was, so there maybe more.

Kangaroo? I've wanted to try that but it's difficult isn't it? Because it keeps hopping off the plate?

I've tried a lot of the australian bush tucker stuff, from monitor to magpie goose to wichety grub. All surprisingly palatable, the aboriginies here were quite the gourmets. They were also a good deal more humane than some of the stuff I'm seeing in this thread. Some of the more interesting bush chemicals are anaesthetics they used on weapon tips. Dunno how effective that was but god damn, some of the live cooking in here is emblematic of a very sick mentality.

edit: Kangaroo hardly qualifies. It's readily available in supermarkets here these days and it's an incredible meat. Ultra lean, super nutritious, many of the cooking properties of good beef with a richer more complex flavour that goes incredibly well with both western game sauces and south-east-asian citrus, soy and chili styles.

Also I see many people posting chicken gizzard as weird food, I don't find it weird at all ^^

ah yeah, that's cordiceps. it's quite commonly eaten. i think it's said to have some medicinal properties? my friend always eats it when she's sick. it basically is a fungus that infects insects and causes them to climb onto the stalk of another plant and grip onto it with its mandibles (where presumably the environment is ideal for the fungus). then it kills the insect and grows from its corpse.

Cordyceps is in the form of vitamin pills as well.My dad gives my family that most of the time i think.

bird's nest soup (chinese)

it's actually bird's saliva, because there's a type of bird that creates their nest with their saliva instead of twigs/branches. i eat it once a year because it's supposedly really healthy, which is the reason why it costs over $100 USD for about 5 bowls worth (just for the uncooked nest). it tastes really sweet. pretty fucking bomb actually.

Probably all the bush tucker I ate while in the Northern Territory.
Honeypot ant.
Delicious, hard to describe the taste though. Despite their name it didn't really taste like honey.
Wichetty grub.
Despite their look this actually wasn't too bad. Ate the first one raw and it tasted a bit like nuts (like almonds not the other kind), weird yeah, but they feed on wood so it sort of makes sense. Lightly roasted the second and the skin sort of tasted like chicken while the inside just tasted like roasted nuts lol.

I'm pretty sure snake venom is only venomous (haha) if it gets injected into your bloodstream or your muscles (like a snakebite). It should be perfectly OK to drink. In fact cobra blood is another medicine-type drink that I think people drink in Cambodia or whatever.

I'd totally try cobra alcohol but I might have to pour it into another cup first, don't really feel like swigging from a bottle that has a goddamn cobra in it.

You guys should watch Madventures which is pretty much a travelling show by two Finnish guys.

Season 3 is in English and they have a little "side-show" called mad cook in each episode.

On the other hand, i've never eaten anything weird.

ostrich steak is great and not weird at all. so isnt cow tongue or squid/octpus. i would not want to eat something that is alive though(not because of the weirdness, but rather the cruelty). well maybe living clams. thats different from an octupus moving in your mouth though .

weirdest thing for me was frog, yeah pretty boring

Ants eggs. Actually it was quite good. In the Heston's Christmas banquet he tried Dormouse and rat I believe and said they were good. I wonder why we don't eat squeamish stuff like rats, insects, and so on. They are good source of protein and probably easily bred.

I wanna try guinea pigs. They are easy to take care of, but I'm not a proper butcher to do myself.

@Scorch: That was disgusting.

Well, in Vietnam we eat duck blood, pig blood not cooked but rather fresh. But not much people still dare to eat these nowaday cos fresh duck or pig blood are full of disease.

Also, Half-hatched duck(very delicious), dog meat(good for drinking) etc.

interesting how perspective plays its part. i don't find chicken feet (my favorite) or pigs blood disgusting at all (served at dim sum places everywhere), but imagining those insects crunching in my mouth is just disturbing to me. but maybe that is standard for you!

I'm surprised the food of Mr. Bear Grylls hasn't been mentioned yet....

Has anyone ever tried to eat their own PooPoo or drink their own Peepee?? How did it taste?

I remember one joke I played on a kid once when I was like 6 yrs old, I got a coke can and pissed in it and got some stuff like pepper and kitchen spices and like vinegar and made a nice mix...then I gave it to the kid to drink... I felt guilty but not really since I was just a little lad. the kid only took a small sip and then of course threw the can away into oblivion.

I do think this thread needs to enter into another stage of weird...

there are a billion posts about chicken feet and pigs blood and crocodile etc....

but what about truly weird stuff like.... poopoo, marbles, nails, chemical cleaners, I'm pretty sure as a small kids they have ingested a lot of weird substances since they love to their their mouths on everything. I think I tried to eat coins once....as a toddler my parents were freaked out of course and told to me to spit it out immediately. I think i still remember the taste...it is pretty nasty now that I think how dirty it was.

Wait, what?

Do you even know what venom is?

Venoms are usually not poisonous, they only hurt when you get them into your blood stream and not in your stomach.

Ive eaten slugs, snails, Aligator, rattlesnake, a full barbeque'd squid, rabbit. Thats about it.

edit. Squid isnt that weird, what was weird is that it was the whole body, barbeque'd guts and beak and all.

I want to annihilate those people that boil up lobsters alive, skin fish alive, fry fish alive; just generally cook shit whilst it is living. Who the hell does that? It's disgusting, and whenever someone does it in front of me, I tell them to piss off. Culture or no culture I do not approve.

Weird foods? This black egg from Thailand xD "100 year old egg" apparently.

McD and Nuggets and "fish fillets" and "fries" and 'burgers' definitely. Gross and greasy.

Fish, piglet eyeballs (that came with the entire body) are quite normal since we usually get the whole thing anyways. Chicken livers and bladders? A mixed-rich place nearby cooks them with vegetables. Standard. :D

Ostrich is really delicious. Had them when I was really young. Now my father doesn't go back to the farm. Pigeon really tastes like chicken (hate that phrase but no surprise here).

Tried bull penis and testicles (boiled in soup not fried). ERrr I've got a feeling it wasn't too fresh since I don't expect many people to eat it but I'm not too sure. But it wasn't smelly or anything, but I'm sure it was the testicles after googling it and seeing a cross section. I'm kind if neutral but I won't be trying too hard to drive to that place again. It's near Petaling Street btw.

I didn't get to try insects or worms or snake or any good stuff like crocs or kangaroos yet though Never been to Thailand or Vietnam or Australia sadly.

The weirdest thing to me is why squid ink tastes so good? Had some in Venice. We throw away the ink here.

Ate some wierd shit in Cambodia.
Dog , cockroach, snake, locust, rotten duck fetus are the ones fresh in mind.

Dog, duck fetus and cockroach was the worst dishes i've ever tried. Imagine what fried shit tastes and your getting close.
Dog was kind of wiry and reminded me of "wet dog". I guess its similiar to the taste you get after biting a wet dog when you play around.

I guess some of the norwegian dishes are kind of odd aswell.

Rakfisk. Rotten fish. We bury it for a couple of months before we eat it.
Smalahove. The picture speaks for itself.

I know some people in less devloped areas are eating shrooms that are considered hamrfull, never tried it myself though.

Crickets, which tasted of teriyaki and were apparently eaten in Japan to get calcium, as they traditionally don't drink cow's milk. Yum. Actually not bad, though the texture was a bit off. And getting those legs stuck between your teeth was a pain.

Worst thing is natto, fermented soy beans. It's like alien eggs wrapped in mucus smelling of athlete's foot. Blech.

Ostrich was kinda nice

When I was a little kid, I ate the roots of a cactus (not the plant itself), and some earth to go with it. I don't remember how it tasted, but apparently it caused more harm to the poor thing than it did to me...

I made it (I don't think I actually had any problems at all, really), unlike the subject of my appetite

Ostrich is really great meat. The only two times I've had it were in southern China, at an American restaurant surprisingly. Ostrich steaks, it's like white meat and red meat in one dish the taste is exquisite. Other than that I like to eat steamed cow intestines (tripe) as well. My favorite strange food has to be de-boned duck feet that are softened up in some kind of solution and served cold with some green onion. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I don't know the name at all.

I've also had snake, rabbit, sea cucumber, octopus, and pigeon. Half cantonese lol.

Our tour guide called me a bitch, rofl.

i have actually heard that sashimi is best eaten 3 days after it is being caught. so the ones you are eating are probably a few days old kept in a special type of freezer.

It's not current to eat rabbits or pigeons in USA (i dont speak about pigeons from cities of course, but about well fed pigeons, born in nature) ??

I start to eat these animals when a very young boy. Very common in France. I thought it was common in other countries.

Btw, i've eaten Ostrich(very good), bison (good too), kangooroo(i realy dont like it...maybe a bad cooking that make me feel like it, or i drunk too much the day i tasted it...), crocodile steak (very tender, i love it)

Of course, i'm french, so...i use to eat some weird things for u, but very common for me : snails, frog's legs, many sorts of mushrooms, tartar steak, salmon's tartar, pig's feets, pig's ear's, cow's tongue, cow's and veal's liver,...

From what I know you aren't supposed to freeze the fish - it ruins the texture and the colour.
When we have sashimi at home it's usually 6-30 hours dead depending on how locally it was caught - living next to a fishing port is good.

The weirdest thing I really enjoy would be grilled eel.

Weirdest things I've tried: fresh-caught rabbit, cow tongue, some kind of blood cake, a "chocolate cheeseburger", baby octopus (cooked until rubber blegh), a few random plants that grew near my first school and had sweet nectar or stems (and were known to be non-poisonous).

I didn't realise ostrich seemed so weird to people. It's a bit like lean steak. Pidgeons are quite like quails iirc, it's been a few years but I had some when we went to visit my grandmother once.

pig intestine, probably. IMO different animal meats is not as weird as different animal parts. That said, i didn't like the taste at all. Was told its an acquired taste. not sure i would like to acquire such a appetite.

fish video was hair raising. Thats absolutely brutal. Yes i eat meat and livestock are treated horribly blahblah, so an argument of hypocrisy can be made, but that fish thing crossed a line for me @_@.

You won't really find pigeon or rabbit in most restaurants, though they can be found in good Chinese restaurants as well as in Asian or gourmet supermarkets. I think people are just averse to eating cute bunnies, since they've become more known as pets these days. And people probably carry a stigma about pigeon being a city bird, but yeah you basically only buy the farm-raised ones.

I ate this piece of bread once, you know the one that is store brand and costs a dollar for the whole bread. It is usually colored white from the bleaching they did to it.

Yeah kangaroo meat is often sold as pet food in Western Australia but is perfectly legitimate to eat. It can be a bit tougher/stringier than you like if you are used to beef, lamb but it goes well in stew or on the barbeque. I used to buy it weekly when I lived in W. Australia.

In the past 2 years I started trying out some weird foods. Frog legs, chicken gizzards, cow tongues, and pig blood.

FYI, thats basicly normal dish in Vietnam, we eat them occasionally during lunch or dinner, to add some we eat most of pig and chicken's organ, snake, some kind of worm, dog, pig blood, duck blood, rabbit, cat, pigeon.

Its always funny for me to start to discuss with all my foreign friends about what we eat in Vietnam, it may sound disgusting to you but believe me Vietnamese make the best meal out of what i just list and we dont eat them alive.

If you not have any restriction due to religion or belief, I strongly recommend that you have a chance you should really go to asia to eat different type of meat, cause they are everywhere, cheap, and so tasty.

Yeah.. it's crazy.

Also I think eating monkey brain alive is a normal practice in China/Vietnam if my memory is not mistaken. I've read some articles about it.

I keep forgetting most people haven't tried haggis - tastes like spicy sausage meat, but lots of people are put off by what it is - heart, lungs, liver or a sheep with cabbage boiled in the stomach. Yum.

Black pudding (congealed pig's blood) is fairly common in the UK, not amazing but not the worst taste I've ever had in my mouth. Which sounds terrible. Also seconding those who said bison and ostrich are tasty. Yes they are.

I am such a pussy when it comes to weird food. I feel like I am about to throw up just after reading and seeing some pictures in this thread.

Weirdest things I have eaten are chicken feet. I go to Korea all the time but I can't handle odd food. Had the worst time eating snails in Paris two years ago, for example.

I was born in China and I ate countless of weird stuff let me think....

Crocodile - That was in Thailand
Snake
Fried locust leg or something like that I think it's grasshopper actually
Jelly fish - it's crunchy
Blood tofu
Pig blood/lots of animal blood
Frogs
Bird nest
Chicken hearts, liver
Cow intestines, stomach
Pig intestines, livers
A lot of animal organs.....
Rabbit
Donkey
Cicadas - I'm for reals, the cocoon is considered a delicacy
A lot of wacky seafood, sea cucumber, urchin
Chicken feet - fengzhao is so yummy yo
Eel
Highland Bison meat found near Tibet region
Pigeon - Lu Ge so goooood in dim sum form

There's more but I will them in later when i think of them. A lot of stuff that people mention in this thread is pretty normal to a lot of Asians because it's considered a normal food I guess.

Japanese Pickled Squid.

Recipe = Squid + salt + sun = Rotten squid in a bowl

Unsurprisingly wasn't the tastiest thing I've eaten.

hmmm havent seen it mentioned here. coming from an asian background ive witnessed a number of things many over here would consider rather disgusting. pig brain, lots and lots of innards, frog legs, insects etc. have eaten some but mostly refrained from doing so(too accustomed to western cuisine i guess). the one thing that has always stuck with me though is balut which is basically a fully developed chicken embryo that is /boiledkilled off shortly before consumption and then eaten just like a normal egg, only that you have developed features like a beak, chicken feet and so on in there as well. coudnt stomach it so i declined, thankfully the people i was with were very understanding:-D

When I lived in China I tried these. I also had some camel and cat. I used to live in the Middle East, and I kind of developed a taste for Camel, it isn't bad when it is prepared properly.

I think the weirdest food I have ever eaten is Gopher. I got plastered one night, and my friend and I decided to catch and cook some gophers. Here are some pictures for proof. We didn't actually catch the Gophers until the next day, so we were both sober in these pictures. I did the evisceration, which was pretty similar to cleaning a really small rabbit.

black culture here have some pretty weird dishes here. Ive tried most of them but probably wouldnt go out of my way to eat them again :

brains, hooves, stomach, lungs, eyeballs, whole heads even of cows and sheep and goats.
Chicken heads, feet, intestines, hearts, well pretty much everything on a chicken exept for the feathers. Even bones are chewed into powder like substance.
Some eat cats, dogs, and even baboon meat which share most of our dna but it is ironically for most of them a sin to eat pork because its 'dirty meat'. Some of its pretty good though.

Other weird things ive eaten are mopane worms (fat beetle larvae) locusts, buffalo, giraffe, snake and camel.

Also if you ever get offered warthog, koedoe (kudu) or rooibok (red buck) jerky or biltong as its called here, do yourself a favour and just try it. You will literally eat that shit till your jaw hurts. So good!

This stuff is fucking delicious. You can actually replicate the yolk flavor almost 90% with avacado and soy sauce. Try it out, the texture is so similar as well.

I live in the Middle East, and have a lot of Filipino friends. They really enjoy cooking me things they don't think I would like, and watching my reaction as they tell me what it is....

Among the things I have eaten:

Grilled Dog
Pig Blood pudding
Pig Blood stew
Hooves
Deer
Pheasant
Pigeon
Testicles
Squid innards
Goats Eyes
Pretty much every single bit of Lamb/Goat/Chicken/Pork/Beef including brain a couple times.
Camel Burger/Curry/Steak
Scorpion
A couple types of worms, forget which types they where.
Grilled Rat
Rat meat rice cake
Bone Marrow broth
Ants
Friend bugs or various sorts.

Balut. Which is an egg that has started to grow a chicken inside. So there is a little bit of blood/guts/meat/feet/beak and even a feather or two inside the egg, but most of it is still the raw egg stuff you get in a normal egg, with a developing embryo.

A lot of horrible combination of normal ingredients. Example, one thing I quite like is Vanilla Sponge cake, with cheese and Mayonnaise lol. Curry Coffee, no seriously, it has curry in it. Apple pie with curry sauce, that's quite nice.

That's all I can think of for now. I've eaten loads of other things lol. I am willing to try anything once, and I wouldn't turn my nose at food unless I've given it a fair chance. I've only puked once eating a food, and that was a tin of Delmonte Plumed Tomatoes lmao! I f***ing hate plumed tomatoes, they make me want to puke. I can eat a brin stew, top with testicles and a Balut to wash it down, but I couldn't eat a plumed tomato.

A live octopus minor (낙지) that you swallow in whole. The thing feels weird as it goes down the throat (that's what she said) and the fact that you're eating something alive makes it stranger.

cow balls, pig intestines, pig stomach, frog, cat, dog, pig knuckle, chicken feet, live squid (yes, it squirms on its way down), and many many unidentified things- i stopped asking cuz most of it tastes good, but once you know what it is you don't want to eat it, and thats rude

i do business in asia. all that food is not weird to them though. still i find mcdonalds to be the most putrid

psylocybin mushrooms.. lol does that count

for the aussies here, it's probably pretty common, but the weirdest thing i've eaten was kangaroo tail. didn't taste really good.

other than that kangaroo tastes fine. so does horse, camel and ostrich. it's just the western perception that we don't eat them regularly.

I usually am not ridiculously exploratory with food, so I've still never tried stuff like sweetbreads (cow's brain iirc for those that don't know)

I think thats the beauty of it. We ge to see how I think ridiculous western culture is in regards to eating. We rarely see where our food comes from, nor eat things that resemble food. I would much prefer to eat a fried locust, a real thing, rather than a mcdonalds hamburger or that liquid cheese at baseball stadiums.

I dont think I have eaten anything weird ever.
Maybe reindeer tongue is something that could be considered somewhat exotic? Or reindeer blood+wheat flour balls?

I think I really really really want to eat insects atleast once in my life, I find it very tempting, and all my friends/relatives who tried it liked it very much.

And about squid:
I ate fresh squid once, they only removed the bill and other stuff that is hard to eat, the rest was left alone.
Was extremely weird in the beginning to eat a tentacle with the suckers still on, just because I wasn't used to it. But when I got behind the initial shock I was pleasantly surprised, it was so tender...amazing!

One thing many people could find weird is a meal called "Schwarzsauer" in Germany. I don't think there is a translation for it. It is not common here anymore, I ate it at my great grandma once. It is a kind of soup that basically consists of a huge amount of swine blood and meat garbage with a few spices, and was a way of recycling what you had left over after slaughtering back in the days.

Spartans ate it too :p

Hmmm probably fresh sashimi, This guy in Japan he cuts the sashimi off the fish alive and the fish can still swim after the sashimi has been made, a true baller of the kitchen knife

Reindeer blood and tongue is really weird, even tho reindeer blood pancakes taste amazing.
The only places i can think of where you drink and eat reindeer blood is in lapland/lappi.

anyways, the weirdest things i've eaten are fermented herring and reindeer blood pancakes.

I ate something from Arby's once. I don't know what it was, I woke up in a cold sweat for a week afterwards, having nightmares that I was eating Arby's again.

Hard one... I don't know, probably chicken hearts, my grandmother tends to put them in soup sometimes. Not really a fan of it, but if you think about it it's not really different from, liver for example (which is fucking awesome!).

There is a high-end sushi place in Toronto that I've been to once with my dad that was the same way, so weird to see lol. I was in Beijing and Hong Kong last year, walking through the markets the fish was so fresh that you could see the heart still beating in the freshly butchered fish!

I used to eat Rocky Mountain oysters all the time while living in Denver, CO. They are a little chewy but not bad. For those that don't know, they are deep fried bull's testicles. Yum.

I was born in Scotland and was fed a lot of haggis as a kid. Probably why my butt is so hairy as an adult :-/

Haggis seems to have a notorious sort of wrap since it is not common to use the entire 'pluck' of an animal is sausage, but when you think about most sausage it is pretty tame. Do you guys realize how they make chicken nuggets for McDonald's? Haggis is tame compared to that.

I do a lot of mission trips so ive seen and been to multiple countries and the top are:

Ecuador- Qui. It's a wild rodent in the mountains, it's basically a huge guinea pig. Tasted a lot like salty jerky

Thailand- live scorpion (no real taste other than salt and very crunchy) and durian which needs no explanation unless you've never been to southern Asia.

Some very interesting foods in this thread. Being born and raised in Toronto, there really isn't anything too exotic that I've eaten. My brother who is more adventurous has eaten or tasted a lot of the "weird" things you can find downtown or in the "Little" towns (e.g. Chinatown, Little Italy, etc.). I don't personally find these things weird, but he's eaten stuff like shark fin soup, chicken feet, frog legs, snails, etc.

My Greek background has been exposed to some strange recipes though - lamb soup made with as many organs as you can fit in the pot, fried chicken livers, small fish with bones intact, etc.

Hakarl - Fermented Shark's meat that smells like ammonia (while in iceland)

From my understanding it was something that was eaten in Medival times, and which people still eat every once in a while for some sort of historical reason. Its also supposed to be consumed with liquour as a follower...which I unfortunately did not have at the time.

edit: just realized it was discussed earlier but I didnt catch it the first time.

Emu , Kangaroo (They sell it in the supermarkets here)....
Nothing that starnge really.
Kangaroo has a very high iron content and you can taste that in the meat , it's certainly not my favourite red meat out there.

Methinks you fell victim to "lets see what we can make the stupid foreigner eat". There's a story that that was how stuff like Vindaloo came about;

"It is thought that the original Vindaloo was the revenge of put-upon servants in an officers' mess during the high days of the Raj, when Brits in India first started to develop a taste for curried food. Making it as hot as they possibly could - to a level that no educated Indian would have dreamt of eating -is thought to have been passive revenge for indignities inflicted by the British. Especially when it was realised that in a Mess full of macho Englishmen, face would have been lost by admitting the curry was too hot to eat... "

i just ate roasted cicades a few days ago in thailand, first time in my life ive (knowingly) eaten insects

frog legs are delicious, ive also eaten crocodile, ostrich, kudu, kangaroo, cactii (not peyote , and all kinds of lesser eaten parts.

ill generally try everything thats available and seems interesting, except for things i dont eat on ethical grounds (shark soup, monkey, whale, etc.)

one thing i didnt particularly like was the sheep intestine curry an indian friend cooked for me at his home, a girl i was with at the time really struggled but still finished it all out of politeness

edit: kinda funny that people qualify liver or blood as weird food. people are so picky nowadays

Kinda unfortunate that octopus + squid are "weird" for so many people. :\

I can understand octopus to a greater extent, but squid? Fried calamari is such a pub/bar food. Even though it's usually frozen crap, it's on so many North American and European menus.

well yeah it is, but i'm just talking from the western majority point of view (which is most of teamliquid).
i'd find it hard to believe that majority of westerners would prefer these type of foods in the thread in terms of taste/cost...

i'd imagine a meal at chipotle or home-made spaghetti would be cheaper than eating a tarantula... or live octopi.

I like to try things, even if I do not like it I have at least tasted it. The experience of new flavors is amazing at times sometimes it is not but missing out on it is not worth it. Oysters is one of the best tasting things I have ever eaten, which is raw shellfish. Not to weird in western society but its hardly fresh pasta.

Somethings that are weird like brains etc. is very cheap and environmentally friendly as they are not thrown away.
