Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

I hope that number is accurate... that is one HUGE region. 10 deaths is most probably very wrong. but they are only reporting deaths which they are entirely sure of. I'd imagine more than 100 deaths.

I fear much, much more with all the other countries in the Tsunami's path. We may see tolls into the hundred thousands.

Kurihara (栗原市, Kurihara-shi a.k.a. K-town?) is a city located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 77,012 and a population density of 95.7 persons per km². The total area is 804.93 km². Previously a district consisting of nine towns and one village, on April 1, 2005, the towns and village merged to form a new city. The new city hall is located at Tsukidate. Though technically referred to as a "city", Kurihara in fact functions more like a county composed of ten separate towns. Soon after the 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 the Japan Meteorological Agency estimated that the town had been completely destroyed.[1] [2] 10 deaths? i hope that area was completely evacuated : / This is really awful. My thoughts are out to anyone in Japan right now.

Don't give too much about the figure of 10 confirmed deaths. That will rise as soon as the cleanup begins and they will find the dead bodies.

It's difficult to express to people not from geologically active areas (I'm from California) how enormously powerful an 8.9 is. 10000 dead would surprise me. This is terrible. Absolutely. Two key things to keep in mind here. Firstly, the number of dead at the moment are "confirmed" dead. Which means the body has been identified and the procedures followed. The figure at this point, unfortunately, is largely meaningless. Secondly, the forces involved in a 8.9 earthquake are beyond far comprehension... but to put it in some context the recent earthquake in Christchurch NZ which killed over 200 people was a 6.2. As the Richter is a logarithmic scale, we're looking at an earthquake roughly five hundred times larger. This earthquake is the largest recorded since the boxing day earthquake in 2004, which killed 230,000+ people and was 9.2.
