Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

almost all trains here have been stopped for the rest of the day. public buses are still running but there's TONS of people waiting in line to get one to, to try to get near their own home. apparently taxis are getting taxed as well. highways are shutdown also.

Hopefully/probably not much. Modern reactors are completely contained, there may be deaths within the facility and the facility may have to be permanently lost, but the likelihood of radiation escaping is very low.

I think it might have something to do that. At first they were saying it should be fine.

Previously a district consisting of nine towns and one village, on April 1, 2005, the towns and village merged to form a new city. The new city hall is located at Tsukidate. Though technically referred to as a "city", Kurihara in fact functions more like a county composed of ten separate towns. Soon after the 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 the Japan Meteorological Agency estimated that the town had been completely destroyed.[1] [2] 10 deaths? i hope that area was completely evacuated : / This is really awful. My thoughts are out to anyone in Japan right now. Completely destroyed, after seeing that phrase so frequently in games, this is the first game i actually felt chilled to my bones that such phrase is applied in real life....

Yes, of course I will just not listen to it, but it's shocking CNN is considered one of the best news stations.

We had a Japanese foreign exchange student, she's in the states right now though she had family in Kasaoka-shi, Okayama. Is that North or South, in or out of danger etc.? Okayama's coastal, but it's more towards the south, and it's protected by the Shikoku islands. There's a middle schooler in neighboring Hiroshima casting NHK on ustream.tv via his iPhone, so I'm pretty sure Okayama's safe.

(which this pretty much says a worse situation, as Magnitude 8.0 is refering to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Japan_Meteorological_Agency_seismic_intensity_scale, which means 8.0 in this case would be like the Richer scale's 10+ I'd assume), so this is pretty dang scary thinking/remembering that anime and also looking at this >< EDIT: apparently this one was like 7.0 (max) or so in the JMA scale?
