You don't have to base everything you do in life on what its maximum benefit will be to you. Uh, are you on crack? Of course you have to do things that will benefit you, then you will never get anywhere. You will be wasting time learning a language that you barely use. I did french for four years in high school and already forgot the whole language. The only reason you should learn a language is if its going to benefit you. you guys are being ignorant. if you've been to university you don't take classes that only benefit you. i know on my campus there are classes like "art for non-majors", "calligraphy", and "science fiction philosophy" offered for credit that are highly popular. who the hell is going to end up using the skills acquired in these classes? in fact, the majority of knowledge gained from general education classes aren't useful when you graduate (lol i'm taking a class called "intro to playwriting"). OP wants to learn korean and receive credit for it. that's all there is to it.
and who says learning korean can't benefit you? you are making a lot of assumptions. maybe OP wants to work in korea when he graduates. maybe he is korean but hasn't developed a mastery of the language and would like to learn. maybe he just wants to understand progaming. hell one of my friends took japanese in high school just so he could watch anime a week earlier (before they were subbed) and he's a lot happier than me with my three years of spanish (which was considered the language with most potential at the time).
simply claiming "OMFG HE SHOULD LEARN CHINESE INSTEAD" is retarded.
|
all my asian friends are learning japanese just so they can watch anime, lol.
what if the op wants to learn korean just to watch korean starcraft commentaries?
|
Korean is REALLY easy imo.... MUCH EASIER THAN CHINESE....
But yea, there's nothing wrong with taking a language class of Korean for whatever reason OP has, it seems OP made a huge step and by reaching out to all of us in TL suggesting and asking help for places to take Korean courses B/C HE ALREADY SET HIS MIND INTO IT.... why else would he create this thread?? Obvious people obvious...
That being said, as someone who did take Korean 1, 2, 3, and 4 in college, I recommend learning Korean, not because it's the easiest language ever but it's fun, interesting and easier than Chinese AND maybe japanese to some extent...
|
Holy crap at responses. I wanted to take korean because I figured it would make viewing some starcraft stuff easier and maybe even be a bonus on my resume if I decide to work for blizzard some time in the future. I just need 2 credits in a foreign language as a requirement for my degree and if you want to learn a language it is much easier then having to learn a language. I am well aware that transferring credits is hard so I'm first trying to find the class and then checking with my academic adviser if the credits will count.

why are you guys wasting time posting on an internet forum about a video game? You could be out learning a useful language or studying mathematics.
|
yeah, people. nobody should go to school, either. you dont even use half of the things you learn there! why bother learning math? we have calculators! why bother learning about history? why bother with anything that we learn at school, since they wont be useful in the future anyways? you're gonna get rich with all those facts/dates memorized?
-----------
if he wants to learn korean, let him learn it. he didn't ask for your opinion. for all we know, he could have won the lottery and just wants something to do in his spare time.

What exactly is dumb about advising him to consider a language that actually has more widespread usage?
What is exactly isn't dumb about learning a language that he actually wants to learn as opposed to recommending him some language just based on actual widespread usage. Perseverance, interest, vigour are the foundations of learning a language not how many people there are in a server. Unless you want to have sex with as many chinese females as possible, then no learning Chinese won't be 'useful' to whiplash as clearly his interests lie in studying Korean and not Chinese.
And for some guy who made an imo comparing the simplicity of Korean vs Chinese, I think since whiplash is a native English speaker Korean would be much more difficult for him (grammatically) over Chinese.
The guy wants to learn Korean, let him learn Korean.

He asked how he can learn Korean, not if maybe Chinese would be more beneficial to him. Obviously he already made up his mind. Do you guys really think he might not have thought of the fact that more people and countries speak Chinese than Korean when making that dicision?
It's pretty fucking annoying when you ask for help in doing something and get 20 answers telling you you should to something else. Amber and all the other geniuses didn't help anyone here but just crapped their unwanted opinion onto this thread, turning it into a shitfest before page 2. Great job.
And generally, and here I have to agree with the "morons tt" guy, you people *are* dumb if you base every present decision on possible future benifit. Especially if you are in your teens or 20-somethings. Just live in the now, do whatever you want, and worry about all that future stuff later.

It seems like you don't understand the world very well my friend. Learning chinese is a very good advice when you know about how much business we do with them and that they represent like what, the third of the world's population?. It's okay to learn a language for the language itself but if you are looking for good opportunities, you have to look further and consider who has the most impact on the world's economy right now.
That's just my opinion. I was learning japanese recently, but I'm seriously considering chinese now. If I had to choose for the beauty of the language, I would pick japanese. But if I'd like to get more opportunities in my career, gotta go for chinese. It all depends what you really want.

He didn't say you should do something else. He asked why you'd wanna learn that when it has limited practical use. There was no indication that he thought about it at all from the op. It's a perfectly valid question. I don't see why the hell everyone is getting all worked up.

Do you actually believe somebody would want to mean cantonese instead of mandarin? That's a good one!
