I would like to take a college korean course online at a college that is accredited. Does anyone know any universities/community colleges that offer korean as an online course that will count as a college credit (accredited)? My current college doesn't offer korean as a language that you can take and I'd like to use it as my foreign language requirement for my degree.

Why do you want to learn a language that is useful in one, maybe two countries?

You should really try and learn Chinese if you want to learn an asian language

You could try this site out: https://www.universities.com/edu/Bachelor_degrees_in_Korean_Language_and_Literature_in_New_York.html

Transfering credits is a really tricky thing. A lot of them don't transfer over and it especially depends on what university you go to and what they accept. Talk to your counselor cause none of us here are going to know the answer to this question.

You won't be living in the United States of Chimerica so you can keep speaking English.

What exactly is dumb about advising him to consider a language that actually has more widespread usage?

Make sure you get a letter of permission from your uni first. It basically ensures they will transfer the credit.

He could be interested in the language and culture. You don't have to base everything you do in life on what its maximum benefit will be to you.

Thats why I provided a very helpful link that you ignored.

Uh, are you on crack? Of course you have to do things that will benefit you, then you will never get anywhere. You will be wasting time learning a language that you barely use. I did french for four years in high school and already forgot the whole language. The only reason you should learn a language is if its going to benefit you.

Instead of calling us morons, why don't you post something that's actually useful. Or at least post as to why you're calling us morons.

I find it hilarious that people on a forum about KOREAN PRO STARCRAFT are so anti-learning Korean. Maybe he wants to get more enjoyment out of a game he already loves? You're going to get on his case for being more into the game than you? I guess it could be envy from the people who are already stuck doing whatever it is to get by and don't have the luxury of learning a language for entertainment purposes.

Being a Korean myself, I would also recommend learning Chinese in terms of 'usefulness'. But in all honesty, we don't know what his studies are, and an Asian language might not be useful to him at all for his career (but he needs the foreign language credit). In that sense, if the OP is interested in Korea, learning Korean will

a) keep him motivated and interested during the course
b) enable him to spark up convo w/ Korean cuties

It's not like he plans to immerse himself in a foreign language. He just wants foreign language credit. Whether he takes Chinese, Korean, Spanish, etc. a single online course isn't gonna stick with him, nor will he be fluent at it.
So as long as his college accepts the credits, I don't see why not Korean.

Sometimes in life it is nice to do things just for enjoyment.

edit: If he gets enjoyment from it then isnt that a benefit? Not all benefits have to be cash.

You know it's funny... you always hear people say things like "oh I'm learning Chinese because they're a rapidly growing economic power and learning Chinese will enhance my future career opportunities". It sounds sophisticated and mature, but it's stupid. You'll never learn a langauge just because you think it might get you a job in the future, because it's so much work and you'll get sick of it really fast if that's you're only reason. Whereas the people that don't have any specific purpose for learning a language, but just do it because it's fun, will often get quite far with it, and usually find a purpose for it later.

It's also quite possible that his family is Korean. That's the usual reason people want to learn it.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

It only takes a somewhat off-topic first post to ruin an entire thread

Being too lazy to actually help find college course offerings for Korean, I will simply agree with Luddite in that learning Chinese is probably NOT going to help you with your career. The best way to prepare for a career that utilizes a foreign language is to live in that respective country ~ immersion. If the OP wants to learn Korean, then there is no reason to try to convince him that his choice is less useful compared to another language.
