![]() I'd also like to mention that advertising doesn't bother me at all as long as it is part of the game (like a billboard or vending machine or something like that) but any ad that I have to watch or interrupts the game is unacceptable.

Gotta mention Quakelive which uses big screens at key locations on each map to have advertisements. Kinda realistic, kinda blatant advertising, but it helps keep the game free.

![]() I don't mind in game advertising as long as it is cleaver. i.e. For SC Good: A marine walking into a pub after a long days work drinking a -insert product-. Bad: Generic ad you see on TV flashing before your eyes. Why do I think this: When you play a game, you envelop yourself in this other (and I stress OTHER) world. When something breaks this 'suspension of belief' or w/e you like to call it, I'd say that's 'bad'.

Honestly, in-game advertisement does nothing but destroy the enjoyment and immersion of the game.

You should however be a bit more specific (I trust you will be in your thesis) and provide some examples (like the Airwaves chewing gum ads in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which were unobtrusive and I kinda liked the idea). P. S. Will you post some brief description (abstract) of your thesis as a blog here or something? (after you finish it of course) Edit: On October 29 2009 08:45 Tom Phoenix wrote: In-game advertisement is a plague and I am glad that it has not become a trend in StarCraft (although you did have annoying examples such as the Pringles MSL maps and the map Central Plains with the Shinhan Bank logo, but which luckily was never implemented). I am also very glad that Blizzard has already confirmed that there will be no in-game advertisement in SC2. Honestly, in-game advertisement does nothing but destroy the enjoyment and immersion of the game. It all depends on the game and the ad. I wouldn't mind having real product ads flashing on the banners in PES or being placed on the cars in some motorsport game. Also, if you'd have some game that would imitate real life in a way (GTA, Second Life etc.) it wouldn't hurt if you saw an ad here or there in it. However, most (if not all) sci-fi/fantasy rpg/adventure/rts etc. games should be ad-free.

a) fits in - a racing or sports game with advertisements on the sides of the track/field makes perfect sense and it also b) aids the sense of reality/immersion - for instance, seeing cellphone ads on neon-lit billboards in Need For Speed Underground makes a lot of sense. On the other hand, seeing a billboard in like, Counter-Strike makes zero sense and sucks.

*add 15 more hours a week.* Advertising is acceptable or appropriate when placed in the following game genre(s): (You may select as many options as you like.) lol. input games that I dont like, which are sports and racing anyway.
