Spark is based on a game called ARC (Attack retrieve capture) back in the day. It's a 2d game, but don't let the simple graphics or it's 2d nature fool you... like StarCraft it actually takes years to master the game (I myself have played on and off for probably 6-7 years back when it was ARC).
Anyway, Sierra dropped ARC back in 2007, and some users recreated the game as "Spark". It's a fairly tight knit community, but always in need of fresh blood. If you can get past the graphics and such you'll find the game enjoyable as it's kind of a hybrid of RTS & FPS with teamplay.
The one thing that many players like about the game is it's something you can just pick up when you're bored and play, but if you don't have time to finish or play longer you can just leave the game right away.
If you bored give it a try (and PM me here if you wanna play or anything like that).
Here's the wiki on the original game that describes it (2d movement with 4 weapons (lasers, bouncies, grenades, missiles): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_Retrieve_Capture

Exactly XD...could they not come up with sound effects or something?
Looks pretty fun, though. The videos remind me a lot of those old school games back in like 1996 online when the internet was first getting popular.
Anyone remember thevirtualarcade.com or bonus.com?

Haha, well there's different patches for sound/graphics/etc..
The original patch (and the one from the download above) doesn't have the DT swipes as far as I know since I use the original, and I would've noticed that. Apparently the dude from the youtube vids uses one with DT swipes, hah.
mainerd: yeah, subspace, uniball and all these games were similar to a point back in the day.

lol, so apprently the redeveloper is going through a crisis himself.
So it's down for now. I'll post back if it comes back up.

Lol wtf @ all the sc sounds, hahahhahahaa
That plus the hilarious and sad message on his site like 3 days after you post its just too much + Show Spoiler +I have chosen to discontinue the Spark project. Believe it or not, the project is expensive to run and people are completely unwilling to support it. I have spent thousands of dollars developing this with very little help.
Spark players will send hundreds of dollars to hubs, but say that a $15 icon is robbery. The Spark store has got 1 order in the past month. That isn't even going to cover my domain costs that are coming up soon, let alone the cost of web hosting.
I am not going to bother asking for money from the community this time. It's time to say goodbye and work on my projects where people are willing to help shoulder the tremendous cost of running a game. earns 5/5 sir!
EDIT: the videos are intense though

Yeah, two of the community members are trying to purchase it from him... so it's probably gonna go up within the next couple days if not today.
I'll let you guys know.

The servers are indeed back up for anyone who wants to try it out and play.
I am not sure if new name registration is open... but I assume it probably is.
|
Haha, site is back up and so should be the name registration!
Sorry for the wait. Wanted to be sure everything was back up before I posted again...
|
reminds me of soldat but kinda spacey like.
|
Ohhh I used to play this a few years back, but the servers were all taken down. There were some crazy gosus back then....
|
subspace/continuum, uniball, soldat ... so much replay value.
Edit: I took a quick look at one of the games recorded on youtube ... and it looks a bit too boring?
|
unless you've played it, you don't know how fun it is

Is there a delay between registering and logging in? It keeps telling me I'm using invalid password/username combination in the applet.
|
looks pretty cool actually, but seems kinda repetitive. i'm sure some people will find this fun though

Install the client and register on the login screen. That one works I believe... registering on the website itself may not work.
And you need to confirm with a valid e-mail address.

Not really repetitive... unless you get bored easily in which case you'd get bored of most any game.
