Tuesday, May 5th at 8PM: ACE vs. Team Vapor will be streamed on TLAltitude's Mogulus Channel with commentary once again provided by tec27 and chobopeon.
This is going to be a big test for both teams. ACE has been pegged as the best team coming out of Team Liquid's newborn Altitude community. Tyr and Jeppew are among the best players in the league. Keit, armed_, and GGQ are undoubtedly top tier players and Curious, ACE's newest recruit, is playing and improving by the day.
On the other hand is Vapor. They've been talked up and down as surefire contenders. While it is widely acknowledged that they are one of the best teams in the league, they're beginning the season very much in the shadow of their official forum contemporaries and week 1 victors, Team Solid. In fact, it's not too rare to hear the following: "Can we skip to the championship? It's obviously Solid vs. Vapor."
Whichever team comes out on top definitely deserves to be imagined in the championship match.
The rest of the Week 2 schedule will be released on Sunday.
Alright, the ball is officially rolling. Below, there is information on starting a team, signing up for the league and playing in the super-exclusive, super-extravagant show match. You should use this thread and the IRC channel (#tl.altitude on quakenet) to find a team. It should be noted that the rules may change as we become more experienced with how the game plays during organized matches.
Here are the rules. They are extremely simple. If/when you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the thread. I will answer you and update the rules with the appropriate clarification. + Show Spoiler [Rules] +
The league's first season will run for a full 4 weeks: April 26 to May 24.
A team will have 2 matches scheduled per week. The default playdate is Sunday. It is up to the captains to agree to a separate date if it is required. If a date cannot be agreed on, then the match must be played on Sunday. Time depends on preferred time-zones of teams.
Throughout the season, the following format will be used with a map veto system:
- Regular Season: BO1 on each map, best of 3 maps - Playoffs: BO1 on each map, best of 5 maps - Championship Match: BO1 on each map, best of 7 maps
Schedules will be sent out weekly via PM and posted in the OP.
A schedule PM will look like this: Team 1 (Captain) (Time Zone): The Pony Factory (chobopeon) EST Team 2 (Captain) (Time Zone): Five Pony Fuckers (Locked_) EST Default game time: Sunday, 4PM EST
At any point (including immediately) before each match, map vetos will be announced. Team 1 vetoes a single map first, then team 2 vetoes two maps, and finally team 1 will veto the last map. Team 2 will choose the first map to be played on and the loser chooses each map thereafter.
The complete map pool is: Mayhem, Core, Woods, Lost City, Middlegrounds, Cave, Asteroids
During the regular season, each team will have an equal number of games as team 1 and 2 (similar to home and away). During the playoffs, seeding will determine who vetoes and chooses maps first: Lower seeds veto first, top seeds choose the first map.
The playoffs will include the top 4 teams by overall winning percentage. If a tie occurs with the winning percentage, the tie breaker goes to the winner of the team's regular season match.
The winning captain has to report the results to me. Screenshots of the post-game screen must be captured after every game and should be submitted to ME (chobopeon) via TL.NET PM immediately following the game along with a scoring summary in text. For example: The Pony Factory > Five Pony Fuckers 2-1 TPF won Cave, FPF won Grotto and TPF won Lost City.
A game which lacks screenshots from either side will result in a loss and 1 game suspension for both teams. Realistically, a suspension will not be handed out unless there is a dispute. Making sure you take screenshots is a simple way to be safe and ensure there is no drama.
In the event of a tie (mutual destruction), the map must be replayed immediately.
A team must have at least 5 total pilots including a designated captain. A team is limited to 10 total pilots.
A captain is the de facto leader of a team. Only a captain can add or remove players from the roster. A captain must be easy to reach for the league and other captains. We will be using the TL PM system and so a captain must check his TL PMs regularly.
To add or remove a player during the season, I must be contacted via PM. For removal, a captain or the player in question should PM me with all the information required below with the subject line 'ALTITUDE PLAYER REMOVAL.' For the addition of a player, only a captain can contact me. He must PM me all the information required below with the subject like 'ALTITUDE PLAYER ADDITION.'
IN GAME RULES:
-Substitutions can only take place in between games and not during a game. This means that each player should test their connection with the server extensively before the game goes live. If a player is having problems, he should not play.
-Voice communications are allowed and encouraged. Every registered team has a channel on the mumble server (under "League Teams") and it is always available for your use. The connection info is: Address: 76.191.126.46 Port: 64738 User: Whatever you want Pass: No password
The TL match server's password is tlscrim.
(Rules last updated Thursday, April 23, 2009, 1:19PM EST)
Here is the team sign up. It is also extremely simple. I've got a brief how-to, a blank form and an example form. Again, feel free to ask questions if you've got them. I will answer them and clarify the instructions. + Show Spoiler [Team Sign Up] +
Only the captain can send this in. Only a team with at least 5 players should be sending in an application. We won't accept a 3 player team "looking for more" - find more and then sign up!
Sign ups will continue until April 25. To clarify, April 25, 12:00am EST is the end of sign ups.
Team Name: Tag: Captain (TL/Altitude names): Pilots, IPs, Account ID: Preferred Time Zone: Show match info:
We need your team name and tag simply for identification. We'd appreciate it if you could wear a tag during all league games. It'd make sorting through everything much simpler.
We need both the team captain's TL and Altitude names for ease of contact and for when if/when we need to review names.
We need all pilots (captain included) handles, IPs and accounts. You can find your ip at http://www.whatismyip.com/ . We need this to verify player identity in the player screen shots and server logs.
We need your preferred Time Zone so we can assign matches which are easier for all teams to complete. I will provide a unique "default play time" (on Sunday) for each game based on the the team's preferred time zone. There is no requirement to only play with people near you, but each time should be able to play at roughly the same time - for practice's sake and for official games.
The last line ("show match info") is totally optional. If you'd like to play in the show match within the next week or so, let me know. This is your chance to pitch that your team will give a good game to the audience. Tell us how long your pilots have been playing and when you'd be available.
Example: Team Name: The Pony Factory Tag: [PEWPEWPONY]name Captain (TL/Altitude names): choboPEon / chobopeon Pilots, IPs, Account ID: chobopeon 43.23.554.123 doobiedoo@gmail.com reddude 65.43.234.456 doobiedoo@gmail.com greenlady 48.43.123.346 doobiedoo@gmail.com blackpower 41.43.789.543 doobiedoo@gmail.com whitemale 43.28.444.120 doobiedoo@gmail.com Preferred Time Zone: EST Eastern United States Show match info: My team is full of veterans that have been playing since before you were born. chobopeon is the OP, and all the rest have been playing since the 80's. We can play anytime on the weekends and most weekday nights, EST, of course.
Should we limit each type of plane to two at a time? Only two miranadas maximum, only 2 explodets maximum, etc etc. Up to you guys. Poll will close when the show match is scheduled.
This is Altitude. The beginning of this post is for people who have already been acquainted with the game. If you are new to the thread, skip this section and get introduced down below!

I've been playing the game since last fall and I like it a lot. Ever play Biplanes? I believe this is the successor.
The Something Awful forums have been introduced to the game recently and as a result, an influx of shitty 15 year old boys with nothing better to do than call everyone a faggot has been seen. However, most of the users are still very cool people.
So, TL, come play and restore the balance in this game's community to well mannered, highly skilled players :D DOWNLOAD IT HERE.
Smorrie and Kaolla would like to join a team or start one with decent people.. We are quite ok at this game both lvl 56 or somethng like that and we would rly love to play in this league... If anyone wants to join us in a team or would like us to join his/her team plz send a PM ! thx
Smorrie: All rounder, good with all planes, especially with explodet and loopy.. not the best big bomb dropper...
Kaolla: Horrible with miranda, best with biplane (or loopy)... quite all round for the rest... biggest weakness is probably being a bit inconsistent (can play horrible 1 game and quite well the next >_< ) and too agressive at times... Oh and another weak point is my computer which sometimes suddenly decides it loves framedrops, which results in me crashing into walls alot -_-... but its not all that bad i think!
So some ppl who wanna make a team PM or reply or whatever ^^
I don't like the rules. BO3 on each map for best of 3 maps during the regular season isn't too bad, but playoffs and championship games are ridiculous. BO7 on 1 map for best of 3 maps? That's a potential 21 games (and each game lasts for ~10-15 minutes, which would amount to around 4-5 hours!) I would prefer to play on more maps (which would imho diversify the strategies) than to play a billion times on each map.
I think rules more like this are better: - regular game: BO1 on each map, best of 3 maps - playoffs: BO1 on each map, best of 5 maps - championship: BO1 on each map, best of 7 maps
The total map pool should be 7 maps (or even more) to diversify, each team in a regular game gets to veto 2 maps (1 map in playoffs, 0 maps in championship). I think there are enough maps for this to work.
Anyways, my team so far is Locked, Intrigue, and me. Anyone interested contact Locked, lol >_<.

i was thinking of changing it but hadn't gotten around to it.
your numbers might work, but i think bo1 is a little low. bo7 is too much, i agree. i'm thinking we should stick with the bo3? ah, i have no idea. everyone should weigh in.
I don't think bo1 is that low if its bo3 maps. If you do the 7-map, 2 veto system (7 possible maps, each team gets to veto 2), then the first maps could be randomly selected from those 3 maps, and then the loser of the first map gets to pick the next map from the 2 that are left. You're still playing 3 matches that way, which I think is fairly good (45ish minute investment, typically). If we do a bo3, on 3 different maps, then you're playing like 6 matches minimum, which is almost 1.5 hours invested. I think thats getting a little on the high side, except for playoffs/finals.
why dont we just start our own league? We have more then enough players.
Rules would be: -1 bo1 on 3 different maps. -1st map is standard, loser picks the next map. -3 active players per side -You are allowed 1 player swap and it must be before a map starts. -There should be a preset map pool
Alright, screw this. I'm making a team. Since my skills are fairly mediocre I'd be willing to accept just about anyone. My only requirement is that you can play a full round on the map mayhem and suicide less than five times...hopefully that's not too strict =/
As for the league format. For the regular games I think we should just stick to one map that the league organizer picks for every week. Then the playoffs we'll do the bo3 maps, maybe with bo5 for each game? Then the final can be some epic bo7 bo3 on each map.
Basically the only thing I want to interject is that I'm not sure about having more than three games for the regular matches. Maybe bo1 on three maps, but just as long as it's no more than bo3 total it sounds fine to me.

We're planning on doing that with the showmatch (well, it won't be broadcasted directly live, but it will be recorded, and then commentated on live, similar to what TSL does). Its possible we could do that with other matches as well, we'll see

This is ridiculous. If for whatever reason none of the players manages to take a screenshot, why punish them for it? As long as there's no dispute as to who won the game there's no reason to require a screencap.
Also, why would you even consider banning something before we've even played matches? Making arbitrary bans before any serious competitive play is even done is just being silly. Anyone who voted yes to that needs to read Sirlin's Playing to Win or something.

While I may not agree with the way the poll is heading, is it really that crazy to consider? Eh, I'd like to see it without limits, tbh, but we'll see.
As for the screenshot rule, I doubt I'd harshly enforce it if there were no dispute. However, if and when there is a disagreement and the precedent has already been set for not caring about screen shots, what should I do? "Do over"? I just want there to be as little drama as possible.
On April 15 2009 07:35 choboPEon wrote: While I may not agree with the way the poll is heading, is it really that crazy to consider?
Yes it is. Considering any changes to the game rules before there's any sort of competitive play to base the need for rules off of is idiotic. It'd be like a character being banned in the first few days after a fighting game's release because he had a few cute tricks that noone had figured out how to counter yet despite him actually being a totally legitimate, balanced character.
No, it wouldn't be like that. Many of us have played the game for a while and we have a very good idea of what massing planes can play like. Anyway, I'm with you - I don't think it should be limited to 2 right off the bat. But at the same time, I see where the others are coming from and I understand how a game with variety in planes might play better.
Hey, maybe you'd convince people if everything wasn't ridiculous and idiotic to you. We're just doing this shit for fun, it really doesn't matter how that poll ends up.
On April 15 2009 07:51 choboPEon wrote: No, it wouldn't be like that. Many of us have played the game for a while and we have a very good idea of what massing planes can play like.
Random pub games are not the same thing as organized teams. If something is even marginally difficult to deal with, it's probably going to seem really unbalanced in that setting. Not to mention that the average game isn't 5v5 anyway.
I realize it's not the same. All I'm saying is that I understand them considering it because public games are all we've got to go on now.
But, like I said, I think you're mostly right. And, to be honest, we'll probably play at least a little bit without the rule in effect so that we can see what's up. The poll is more of a guide for potential future rule changes than anything else.

I think one of the biggest things we need to decide on right now with regards to the rules is map choice. If we do a bo3, 3 different maps, then there are like 3 different ways of deciding maps:
1) There is an official starting map, and past that, the loser can pick the map from any map in the pool (either allowing them to choose them same one, or forcing them to pick a different one, whatever)
2) The teams veto maps (in succession, Team A vetoes 1 map, then Team B vetoes 2 maps, then Team A vetoes the last map), leaving 3 possible maps to play on. The first map is then chosen randomly and the loser gets to choose from the remaining pool of 2 after that.
3) There is an official list of 3 maps to be played in order, announced before each week.
I'm not sure which is truly preferrable, but I think option 2 is the most appealing to me, and allows for the most depth in map selection.

2 sounds good. how many TBD maps are there exactly in the map pool?
There are several imbalanced maps that aren't really fit for competitive play. Grotto, Woods, Core and Asteroids are the only good ones.
Hills is too simple, lots of camping, you can hit with the bomb from halfway across the map, matches on this map will end very fast.
Mayhem there's too many closed spaces and obstacles which gives a big advantage to certain planes and there's just way too many places/obstacles to go through to be able to properly defend. This map will also end very fast just a question of who bombs faster.
Lostcity is very linear and will have a lot of camping, I think with 2 decent teams a round on this map will be very long and frustrating.
Middleground is actually a decent map but the bottom back entrance from one base to the other makes the base way to accessible way too fast, for maps with these paths to work it needs to be more like in asteroids where there's a longer more narrow way to reach the base. I think this map can be very good if the back is blocked that way it's still not too linear but not too easy either.
So umm, I'm looking for a team. My tag [TL]BW. Arround level 43 atm. Don't really have a preferred timezone, can come at any time as long as its a sunday. Send me a PM if you're interested in picking me up.
I am still looking for a team. If you are interested on being on a team and don't have one yet, PM me. If I can't find a team to join then I will start one!

I really think there are 7 maps fit for competition: Mayhem, Core, Woods, Lost City, Middlegrounds, Cave/Grotto (really the same thing, one has a neutral bomb I think?), Asteroids
I understand BG1's concerns about certain maps, but I think we should let them play out in the league and see how it goes. For all we know, these maps could be quite decent for 5v5, strategic play. Actually, I think the best way to determine that would be to run some scrims on each map, perhaps we can make that happen in the coming days.
On April 16 2009 00:05 choboPEon wrote: anyone else have thoughts on map balance and preference?
I wouldn't worry too much about this. All of the official maps are reasonably balanced, though some provide more interesting gameplay than others certainly [and some reward certain plane choices more than others]. The overall level of play isn't nearly high enough at this point to worry about whatever small map imbalances might exist, though.
If people are worried about specific maps they can always veto them out if they'd like.
like i said before, mapwise the only "bad" TBD is hills, only 2 ways between each base and a really small size turns any attempt to cross the border without going en masse a suicide.
every other map is fine, the better ones are the maps with a sort of middle area like middleground and cave where controling the center is crucial.

Yea they're fine to play for the first few times to try out and stuff but this is pretty much like playing sc on blizzard maps, they won't be used in the future and hopefully more maps lke the core are gonna be made.

yeah i like maps where you fight for the neutral bomb alot more than those where it spawns in your base, it's less stale and defensive. on a related note: is there anyone trying out the editor much? is it hard to use or anything?
I think im pretty decent with the Bomber and im learning to use the Biplane for maps where the Bomber is useless, such as Mayhem, but my crappy South American connection and its random lag spikes dont really work in competitive play, so i cant participate.
Still, i think this is a great idea and would love to see some recorded matches.

I'm not sure what happened to my server, I'll work on getting it back up ASAP. Edit: Should be back up now, some random process was eating all the CPU. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Also, I put up a Mumble server for people to use for voice chat while playing: 76.191.126.46:64738 Shouldn't need a password or anything.
Well it seems I've managed to fill up a 5 man squad already. However if anyone's still interested in joining to fill up a full 10 man roster (I have 2-4 slots open depending on whether or not some people I've talked to still choose to join) then just PM me I'll try to make sure all of my pilots get as much playing time as possible. I'll get the formal team registration in as soon as I get my teams IPs and time zones.
While I won't turn down potential prospects, I'd still encourage people to try to fill up as many 5 man squads as possible though. I'd rather it be a league of eight or ten 5-man teams rather than a league of four or five 10-man teams
About the poll, I think its a completely silly rule to have. Any team with more than three planes of the same kind would get crushed ez and if its not I would be interested to see it Its a beta after all so we could make ourselves useful and check the balance issues.

for at least week 1, the rule will not be in effect. we'll all decide where to go from there.
My team has 4 members so far im adding another 3-4 (kuja900, scarmanga, evolv3 and apathy) pm me if your interested in joining. We intend to use a vent server and scrimmage/practice a bit so sooner the better. In your PM if its not to much trouble please include timezone/preferred playtime/preferred planes. Dont be a stranger <3.
you will find much more success finding a team if you take the initiative and actually pm some of the people who are saying they are looking OR if you say you want to be a captain and solicit pm's yourself.
Kaolla, [TL]Rice & Me are still looking for 2 more A+ pilots!
So far we have 1 Biplane, 1 Loopy & 1 Bomber user.
Please PM Kaolla if you'd like to join our team and include your favorite plane(s), any are welcome! I'd say we all are above average players and will be ambitious to win this league! Join us if you are a winner too
(On second thought, we'll be taking in a few more ppl in as well, in case not everyone can show up etc ^^)
Anyone has room in their team for a total noob, but who is dedicated to improving? I'll be good by the time the league starts if someone could guide me a little.
On April 17 2009 01:20 choboPEon wrote: no one is going to pm you, gno. pm THEM. take the intiative.
Unless you're a regular on the server and people know you well enough, this is most likely true If you're looking for a team either start hassling everyone in-game or PM the people who are looking for members still. Also it might help if you post your in-game name, that way if people recognize you they might be more likely to send you a PM.
As of right now I may have a full 10 man roster depending on the interest of my potential recruits, so if you're still looking for a team, PM one of the other captains or PM one of the other guys looking for a team and start your own
Also, just wondering, as a captain do I have to play in every game? Or just be present? Because I'm trying to get my team as much playing time as possible if they're all able to make the games and I'd be willing to sacrifice my own playing time to let some of the better players take over if they'd like. Then while we're on the subject of that, during a match (as in, in between the 3 games played in the Bo3) can we substitute players? Or do I have to keep the same roster through out all games played in a single match?
That's why there is only 5 players in my team. I'm counting on everyone being present when we're playing. Since We will know when we're playing a few weeks prior the game itself, it shouldnt be too difficult, i guess ...
captains do not have to play in every game and, in the end, they don't even have to be present for the entire game. they have the responsibility to set up match times and handle the roster and things of that nature. a captain could end up being a coach who never plays for all i care (although it'd take up a roster spot and that seems like a waste), the only point is to have someone appointed to take care of administrative shit. feel free to handle playing time as you wish.
as for the second question, i can see that i didnt really clarify that in the rules. sorry! you can only substitute in between games (as in, in between game 1 and 2 and 3 of the bo3) and not while play is going on. ill write up something more in depth in a minute for the rules section.
Yeah, right now I have five players who I know are definitely in, but also five others who have just expressed interest in joining, but haven't given me a definite.
Edit: alright thanks chobo, that's exactly what I was looking for I was pretty sure that substituting during a game would cause too many problems to be allowable, but I'm glad to see that we can substitute in between games.
I am getting more and more open for the thought of creating a team.
The guys who sent me PMs till now: stet_tcl aka [TL]soup teejing. Gnojfatelob
I am waiting for PMs from any interested ones. Please tell me your ID, skill levels, preferred planes, style etc.... I only got detailed information from stet_tcl.
The team name is not certain yet. Ideas are welcome. Walltitude Great Wall of China World Wide Wall Wallers Fucking Skilless Newbies
Locked and I are trying to get a scrim together tomorrow, so if you want to be available to be a ringer for that, be on IRC! #tl.altitude on quakenet
If anyone needs/wants a Mumble server to use (its like Ventrilo): 76.191.126.46:64738 No password needed. Feel free to create any channels for your team or whatever, and definitely connect if you're playing on the TL server
i hope loopys burn in hell, at least see your target before you start spamming, not shooting from across the fucking map, actually just spamming in general should stop, please have some consideration....
you will not improve by spamming, and in case you're wondering THAT is exactly why some maps i sit my ass behind the choke and camp my heart out.
i need cannon asap.

nothing at all against explodets and their mines, it takes skill to use explodet against skilled players.

eh? I mean sure there are some people who mindlessly spam, but sometimes when I play with loopy I'll start firing into a common entrance way for enemies, so that if they come into view I can just lock on and the missiles I already fired will hit. It's a legitimate tactic imo. Anyways, the missiles don't even travel all the way across the map, they barely travel two screens distance before disappearing.
but then again there are people who just spam for the hell of it =/
Please guys, send me the things which are needed for signing up: Altitude ID (the e-mail address), your IP address (to avoid abusing), preferred timezone.
Also send detailed infos about you: preferred plane, skill level, alternative planes, preference in gameplay style, do you own a microphone.
I plan on using a Mumble channel (similar to TeamSpeak and Ventrillo). Look for infos about this above in the post of tec27.

they whine about everything, especially what plane you use. "stop using the miranda" "explodets are for noobs" "the starship enterprise can go fuck itself."

I actually do that a lot. Whats the difference between spamming missiles at a choke and laying mines at a choke? Its the same thing.
i think we can all agree, when not raging, that spamming loopys is a perfectly legitimate tactic. anyone who doesn't do it (and uses a loopy) is wasting the plane's primary weapon.
On April 18 2009 05:38 jeppew wrote: also, why am i almost the only one going laser on the miranda? everybody seems to love the trickster.
Because the best part about the miranda is being able to fire off a charged shot then do a 180 to either run away or cut off the other plane as they try to run away.
You have to shadow the other plane for too long, and the miranda just isn't fast enough or strong enough to do that to any plane consistently.
wellp, im also here and if some good team ( i do not bother with mere peasants) wishes for my hopefully increasing mad pieplane skillz let me know or if that fails i will cry.
For the sake of encouraging scrims, I am listing the teams as they register. I know I have interest from several other teams. You guys should all register as soon as you can so that people know you are ready to scrimmage.
On the other hand, the deadline is still April 25 and, of course, there will be no penalty if you wait until then to register.

eh? What's your in-game name? No offense but I don't think an "A team" will just take some random guy they don't recognize...unless you're an old-school player I haven't met in game yet, in which case I apologize.
Anyways, if you are serious about an A team, try the official forums and the team that Pillars is trying to organize there. The only good teams here (I won't say which since I don't want those teams knowing I'm afraid of them ) are mostly full I believe, and you won't get an answer from them unless you actually take the initiative and contact them personally yourself.
nfo, i don't know who you consider an A team but (for the thousandth time), they will not just PM you. you have to PM them. or, make your own team and PM some people.
either way, the only way people are going to play in this league is if they take the initiative and PM. making a 2 line post won't get you a team.
well im not hoping to get into to seven teams 1minute after i have posted something, im just saying im out there, takin it easy, sure ill poke around, its kinda hard Here, because i have no idea who people are in-game.
ps, sure im not a hardcore veteran, but on a good day i can be pretty sweet.

not their fault you decided to go with the worst name imaginable :p
you guys should totally scrim more. i dunno why you guys are making it such an event. it does not bode well for the league when no one can even get 5 on to just get a few scrims in :p
but what does bode well for the league is thateveryone is becoming a professional trash talker :D
also, i see that the official forums are going to be sending (at least) 2 teams into the league.
any more from TL? i know there are enough players. the question is if anyone wants to be a captain and look through the thread for players. not too much work, i promise!

People are playing so much that it is difficult to keep up with their progress. Now that I've stopped playing because of exams, rather than being about average skill as I was a few days ago I'll probably suck. There is very high skill differentiation in this game (though not at all as much as SC).
you guys should hop on the mumble more often. tyr, tec and i were on last night (when the server was inexplicably going crazy??) and it was fun. the ip is in irc.

I can switch the main TL server over to a scrim server whenever, I have a config ready for that. I would just prefer to have 10 people who are definitely going to play before I do that, so I'm not screwing over the pubbers needlessly
And chobo, if you just want the server exe's, I can send them to you. After all, they're fairly small. Not really worth re-installing over
Into The Walls, or [30D.O.M], is facing off against the presumed giant of the league: Team Solid - [TS]. Tec27 and I will be casting the game - you'll be able to watch it on Monday, April 27 at 8 P.M. EST.
There can be no beating around the bush: Team Solid is the immediate favorite to win the game. They've got the experience and knowledge to compete with and beat any team in the league. Even more important, they've got big names - Pillars, to name just one, is the [TS] captain. But what about Dio, Skywalker, Yankeeboy and Protest Boy? And that's just half of their team.
That makes Into The Walls the underdog. But don't be so quick to count them out: they've got recent activity on their side. Keen, in particular, is one of the most active players in the league. There's no doubt that you are much more likely to catch a [30D.O.M] tag in the TL server than a [TS] tag. That ought to offer more than a glimmer of hope to the team. If they scrimmage and put in a bit of effort, this game should be closer than you think.
[30D.O.M] is team 1, [TS] is team 2. This means [30D.O.M] has the first map veto and [TS] chooses the first map to be played.
Poll: Who wins on opening day? (Vote): Into The Walls (Vote): Team Solid
In addition to tec27 and I, tyr` of ACE may chime in from time to time with vaguely racist jokes and weird French sound effects - it's going to be a good time, folks. We'll post instructions to watch the stream right here closer to kick off.
The rest of the week 1 schedules will be sent out on April 25th. If all goes well, we'll try casting a few games throughout the season. See you Monday!
I think ITW can pull it off. Ok, there are some REALLY good players on TS but this is a team game. I don't think even Pillars can survive in 1v3 or something. Either way, this is certainly going to be very exciting to watch.
keen, I'm sorry about the beginning of the video, originally it was going to be that suicide/death video we were joking about, but I ran out of footage and ended up just doing a general highlights vid
this was a post made on the official forums. what are your thoughts on it?
why is hills not available as a map? It's probably the most balanced map out there honestly. And mayhem and asteroids? I'd rather play on woods
so i talked to chobo about the map list--right now these are all the remotely viable TBD maps Hills Cave City Grotto Woods Mayhem Core Middleground Asteroids
-------- I don't know if it's important that Chobo have only 7 available. But if so, we should discuss which maps should go and what should stay. Personally I would dump asteroids and Mayhem since I think those are most imbalanced maps right now on the list. Plus, do we really want random bomb spawns and massive turrets to be in league matches?
my response:
for reference, the actual map pool as of right now is: Mayhem, Core, Woods, Lost City, Middlegrounds, Cave, Asteroids
i really don't think hills will lead to any interesting game play. every time i have played hills has been the same as any other time, plus or minus a few types of planes. the reason we choose 7 maps is for ease of the veto system and if there is any map to cut it is hills - at least, that is the consensus that has been voiced thus far. if you guys have different ideas, i am more than willing to listen.
but please, someone tell me a) why hills will lead to interesting gameplay b) why turrets, if balanced properly, will lessen competition c) why the neutral bomb spawns wouldn't encourage (good, competitive) things such as map control
if we're looking for a purely player v player match up, we could just have a blank patch of sky with two bases (i am almost describing hills right now! except for, you know, a single hill and a dinky cave) but we have gravitated toward maps which afford us the best chance for interesting play and have the added dimension of dealing with and taking advantage of the environment in addition to opposing players.
I would definitely agree on keeping Hills out. There's nothing interesting about that map, and its far, far too small.
Past that, here are maps I am fine with, in order of preference (best first): Middleground Core Woods Grotto Cave Asteroids Mayhem Lost City
Honestly, I'd choose Lost City almost every time for the map to get rid of to keep 7 maps. The map is really uninteresting and has some problems that make it very, very hard to beat any decent defense. Mayhem certainly may be imbalanced towards mirandas and explodets, but I don't think its insurmountable. I also think mayhem has one of the more interesting bomb spawn setups, so thats something to consider.
Neutral bomb spawns are far superior to non-neutral ones, imo, even if they are somewhat random. The randomness is not entirely random, you can still tell when an item is spawning and control when it is picked up. And since on mayhem you know its either going to spawn health or a bomb, this isn't an issue, imo.
Asteroids may be a bit excessive on turrets, but I don't think its that bad, and will merely be a bit longer of a game. Personally, I'm all for removing maps which offer little to no opportunity for decent games, and leaving the rest up to the veto system.
Edit: Apparently according to cokane I'm too new of a player to possibly understand the subtle nuances of hills. Sorry then, please disregard all my analysis
a) it won't, it's too cramped and with only 2 ways between each base. everyone will just sit on their side wait for bombs, bumrush bombing runs and hope you don't get shot down the second you cross the mountain.
b) turrets will make matches longer, but i think they're good because they present a secondary objective. by bombing turrets your opponents won't have much safety in their own base, making bombing runs/sniping easier and they can't retreat to heal too easily. so when you get a bomb you'll have to decide, will i bomb a turret and make it easier for my team in the long run or go for the base which will win us the game?
c) really important imho, it almost completly stops turtling. the only form of overly defensive play that is possible on a map with a neutral bomb is waiting for your opponent to bring the bomb to you, wich doesn't work if they just drop it before they die each time. it forces both teams to go out on the map and secure the middle, there'll be alot of dogfights instead of the bumrushes into a defensive wall of bullets you see on "normal" tbd's. also, neutral bomb maps usually have more ways into the others base, like middleground and mayhem where the map "loops", making more bombing run strategies possible. (asteroids loops aswell but it only loops at the top, making that path really slow and almost impossible to take because everyone will know you're coming 30 seconds ahead of time)
On April 22 2009 00:26 tec27 wrote: Honestly, I'd choose Lost City almost every time for the map to get rid of to keep 7 maps. The map is really uninteresting and has some problems that make it very, very hard to beat any decent defense.
Agreed. While Lost City is a fun map to play on sometimes in pubs, I really really think it would be boring as hell in organized team matches. Mainly due to the choke point in the middle. Whenever I've played on Lost City with decent players, it basically becomes a camp fest for 30-40 minutes with neither side being able to make it very far past the central wall, and the game really only seems to end once people start leaving and/or getting replaced by lesser skilled plaers.
For future reference, I think that really any map with a central choke point that isn't a neutral bomb spawn will lead to really boring campfests during organized team matches.
On April 22 2009 00:26 tec27 wrote: Edit: Apparently according to cokane I'm too new of a player to possibly understand the subtle nuances of hills. Sorry then, please disregard all my analysis
Fuck that, we're starcraft experts, we know everything there is to know about strategy
nah, usually its because half the team doesnt have the balls to pass the choke point, last few games on lost city (sure ive had good teams) we have made a heavy formation of planes helping the bomber pass through, f*** everything up on the way and toss the bomb. its usually because people dont want to get shot down why the choke point maps take so long.

Unfortunately...that's just about the only decent strategy I see every game. Every time that strategy isn't used, it just goes back to being a campfest.
It's like a NR20 game on fastest map possible. You just camp, and only rush when you have everything you need to fuck up the other guys.

Ok, my good friend Sance (he joined here to play in this) and I are going to be making a team, so currently we need at least 3 more people. If you are having any trouble joining a team, Please PM me, Athos and I Will accept anybody.
Edit, we have a full working lineup now! I'll still accept a possible two alternates though Team We Suck Dick Tag: WSD.
When you are playing on the mario level, there is something really cool you can do, to save yourself, and get out of hairy situations. You needc to make sure that your miranda has the 180 perk on.
Notice all of the green tubes. (so far i have only been successful at going through the lower one) If you 'land' your miranda on top of the bottom tube, hold direction and then 180 continually you can slip through the tube and to safety, in about 3/4 180's It is really really useful, and has saved my hide in a pickle or two.\
basically you will know it is working, when the Miranda slowly begins to sink lower and lower into the tube, after each 180 you accomplish. Good luck!
I suck at writing battlereports, but here it goes for the scrim between fLb and SnM
First game was on The Core. Nothing much to note here really, fLb played the whole game with two mirandas in their lineup at all times, which were just owning shit left and right with their bounce balls. SnM tried desperately to figure out a good counter (only one of us is half way decent at miranda) but to no avail. We managed to take out their front turret, but with their two mirandas working together to cut all of our bomb runs short, we were completely stalled, while fLb slowly but surely got in enough bombs to secure the win.
Second game was on Asteroids. SnM was pretty downtrodden from their complete loss in the previous game, but we quickly tried to pull our shit together and figure out a proper strategy. It seems that while the mirandas were still owning up shit together, they weren't as effective in the slightly more open areas of Asteroids. CSheep was able to get past them enough times with his bomber in order to destroy all but one of fLb's turrets. By the time CSheep managed to destroy the turrets both teams had only managed to take off a sliver of damage from the other teams base. At this point one of our biplanes took up the role as bomb runner and we all began covering him. We went through the middle taking out all of fLb, but unfortunately the bomb was a complete miss despite all enemies and turrets being dead. However keeping our spirits up we took the top route and managed to deliver a bomb for full damage on their base.
Taking a much needed morale boost from this SnM sneaked in a few more bombs reducing fLb's base to just a hair of hp left, before fLb got their strategy together and figured out how to stop us. Then after a long series of failed bomb runs from both sides (but a few successful ones from fLb), fLb managed to score one last bomb and defeat us 2-0
gg guys, you proved that you're not so faggy after all we were originally going to play bo5...but proleague's on...
In game 2 for half the game we kinda just kill farmed for a bit mindlessly, the k/d ratios in the game were dominantly in our favor. We however forgot about the bomb and they ninjaed several runs and got us down to a sliver. We then buckled down and played smart and strategically and got them from half to 0 without another bomb coming close to touching our base.
Some of them dropped during match and had to come back, they only gone like 3 sec didnt affect the match at all, but thats why their kills/deaths so low.

I personally didnt experience all that much lag maby a patch here and there.
On April 22 2009 14:21 Misrah wrote: Sixghost & Misrah = DEATH!!!!!!
Amen to that
After our game on the core I was starting to think that two mirandas might end up being required for organized team play. After asteroids though, I realize that they're not really required...but they still help a damn lot (obviously if the miranda pilots know what they're doing )
Edit: btw on that picture, in sheep's defense he got most of those deaths from hunting down turrets.
I think that for a 5v5 team, the best layout would be:
2 mirands: Simply to slay, keep the other team item less, and of course map control 2 bombers: Kill those turrets and to help clear bomb run packs (if they don't have reflectors) 1 Bi plane: Bomb runner. Really that is what the bi plane is made for imo. Ideally the bomber has the long range cannon, and ace upgrades. That way when they are not running bomb, they are trying to steal kills- get upgrades, for a faster and more juiced up plane, to make the run.
I think that items are really under rated in that game. I know that i try and control the items, (i think that some one even complained about it in a game or something lol.) The reflector is imo the essential tool for getting a bomb run in. Simply have the lead bomber / miranda have that thing out plowing through the field and gg.
If the mirands do there job correctly, the bombers should be able to get in some good runs on the turrets. then after that, get the bombers to get reflectors, and lead the charge with the bi plane following.
Yeah, the reflectors are useless in ffa's or pub TBDs, but when used correctly in organized matches they're fucking awesome T.T
Also the key to mirandas I think, is keeping them together. With them being able to constantly 180 and protect each other, it takes a shitload of skill/luck to take them both down.

Lol omg i just kept grabbing reflector and raping when you all went into that topside choke on asteroids with the bomb and posse was so fun
Really a team of mirandas can 1 hit ko any plane in the air (when both shots hit) Couple that with both of them having upgrades, and you have a bit of a nightmare on your hands.

Yeah, as we proved on Asteroids, when faced against two Mirandas, you're better off just trying to ignore them and run right through as fast as you can hoping they miss.
Throwing a few random grenades/missiles doesn't hurt either

Yeah that and a team of explodets are why the 2 plane rule being considered
eplodets are useless imo. Bomber are faster and more powerful, not to mention the fact that expo's are SO SLOW. They cannot bomb run, can't shoot turrets, and really in a team game no one is going to be running around aimlessly into mines. in my most humble opinion teams that sport an explo are simply dropping a plane.

I very much disagree, explodets with the vacuum/stall thingy are very good on maps like asteroids as most of the time people end up crashing into walls because they can't recover, their mines are also a pretty strong asset as it well help secure map control.
You could tell me those mine are useless against skilled players, but in reality it's quite the opposite, it adds pressure and will capitalize on their slight normaly forgivable control mistake
explodet on defence is priceless. but for a bomb run they are bad (unless they are protecting the bomb carrier with their massive size and tanklike armor).
also i would like to extend a friendly challenging medieval style gauntlet to face challenge to one of the teams for a "friendly" match some time.

Yeah, this. Especially considering that with the game's netcode, the amount of you have to avoid a mine by to be safe increases along with the Explodet's ping.

Agreed. While Explodets won't be getting many kills by themselves, the amount of pressure and overall distraction of the mines allow other players to outmaneuver the opposing team.

I think he was saying there's no need to do any editting for the video to be anti-SnM
I'd like to ask for a precision about that rule, for instance i do play random, therefore it might happen we would momentarily have 3 planes of one type in our favor does that mean I wouldn't have the right to select random during the league ?
There is not a 2 plane per team cap. That poll is to gauge where the sentiment is right now - we're going to play with no limits for a time and if it is glaringly obvious that we need to impose limits, we will do so.
8 teams 61 players, for such a small game and "young" league, thats awesome. the gods shall be pleased by the blood, or incase of planes, oil spilled...
this is getting exciting, you should feel my nipples.
Every league team that has registered so far should have a channel on the mumble server now (under "League Teams") if you guys want to use it. The connection info is: Address: 76.191.126.46 Port: 64738 User: Whatever you want Pass: No password

Right now, there are no limits.
I dont play in the league, but i have played around 50 hours of the game and so i would like to make some comments about this.
Im fairly decent with the Bomber and not so bad with the Biplane and Explodet.
But today i played with the Miranda for the first time and i have to say i feel it would be really imbalanced in 5v5 matches, because i can only see to real weaknesses in the plane:
-Awful bomber carrier (but obviously no one is going to use for that purpose in an organised game).
-Low health makes it very vulnerable to random fire coming from massive clusterfucks of planes as you approach to engage (which are not going to be very common in 5v5).
In everything else, that plane just rapes.
Maybe you should consider a point system, something like this:
Each plane has a point value, Loopy and Explodet cost 1 point, Bombers and Biplanes 2 points and Mirandas 3 points.
Each team could only spend 9 points when creating their lineups, so they would have to make a choice between a strong spear head of 2 Mirandas and a weak rear of Loopys and Explodets or a more balanced team.
I think it would add a little more strategy to the game and prevent abuse from teams with two or more really good Miranda pilots.
On April 24 2009 07:49 CrimsonLotus wrote: Each plane has a point value, Loopy and Explodet cost 1 point, Bombers and Biplanes 2 points and Mirandas 3 points.
That doesn't make any sense. You can't basically say that Loopy and Explodet are useless and Miranda is overpowered. Each plane has its strong points and weak points. I know some Explodet players that just rape everything in their way. So basically you're saying that you take 5 of those players, give them all Explodet because it's "cheap" and they just mine the whole map and kill everything and bomb the ennemy base when everyone in the opposing team is dead. This just doesnt work like that. Right now there's no limit because we just don't know if there are balance issues in plane compo. And I personally think that a 5 miranda team will totally suck.
I personally would like to wait for a 4-5 miranda team to dominate before we rule out the possibility. If you think/know it will dominate, then please do it and win the league with it.
with all due respect, despite your 50 hours, it sounds like you don't have a well rounded grasp of the game. also, your proposed solution is convoluted and would just make things difficult.
lets be honest: no one has a well rounded grasp of the game and no one will until we really get into 5v5s on a regular basis.
we'll wait to see what happens in game. if, after a while, mirandas are just wrecking everyone, we will change things up. frankly, i would be surprised but either way, the only course of action is to wait and see.
All the people thinkin the Miranda is overpowered should play with the plane for a while. It can be great, but so can any other plane in the game. It has horrible health, pretty awful speed, and stalls like shit because you have to use all your energy to fight.
Just off the top of my head, 2 biplanes or 2 bombers would destroy 2 miranda, Bombers with good aim can wipe the floor with mirandas, and biplanes are so hard to hit and take a ton of damage.
mirands that are flow well are powerful. But so are all planes. I can get really frustrated with some of the mirands short comings. It is not all powerful like you say.
this game actually doesn't seem to be balanced too bad all things considered, but as it stands now those floating mine things are way overpowered in games with a lot of people
and mirandas with reverse thrusters seem way overpowered on maps with lots of chokes, as they can just sit there in the choke moving back and forth killing anyone who approaches

Yeah, and two mirandas covering each other while attacking are fucking deadly. Although, while I do have beliefs that certain plane lineups will end up being overpowered, I'm willing to play through a whole season without any restrictions at all to help us figure out what is/isn't overpowered.
I know a lot of people want to see a fully functional and balanced league right away, but obviously it isn't going to happen. Instead of establishing rules and restrictions for the league, let's just consider this first season an experiment so we can be certain that any future restrictions we add really do need to be set in place.
Guess I'll submit the team. Though I hope we can still recruit people. We could use a few alternates.
Team Name: We Suck Dick Tag: WSD. East Coast Current lineup: 1. Athos: Captain 71.230.26.50 2. Sance 71.225.96.164 3. JimTudor 4. Nihii 5. Exess1ve 24.255.102.101
Miranda makes me rage because of the instant 180 that takes almost no energy =[
But meh, dying to stray Explodet mines pisses me off more. What a crappy plane, you don't even need to be on the same side of the map to get kills? And you don't even do any damage, you just hit 'em into a wall and the wall does all the work for you >_<
On April 24 2009 10:47 gameguard wrote: seriously, its so hard to kill biplanes with miranda. They just dont die lol.
you miranda flying sonofa dick, it usually doesnt seem that hard for you to kill my pieplane!
miranda is NOT overpowered. i consider myself relatively experienced and have played all planes quite enough and all i have learned is that everyplane is overpowered once they are in the hands of someone who knows wtf they are doing. example: i usually fly the biplane with heavy cannon, i am capable of defeating the average miranda player quite easily now that i have learned how to, with only getting shot once myself and i spit at their burning wrecks... but Gameguard here who is really freaking good with a miranda gives me such a fckin headache, sure i can probably get off 1 shot what takes most hes health but still 4/5 times (im working on improving that) im the one whos plane burnz!
so the pilot factor will always be more important than the plane itself. nerf the planes? ney i say nerf the players ( i dunno, cut off some fingers?)

f*ck yeah lol ^^
on the topic of mirandas tho, dont QQ bout it unless u have actually tried to play miranda for a semi-extended period of time. I personally find that it probably has the highest skill requirement (although rivaled by the biplane), and the reason u get ur asses handed to you is because most crappy players dont use it, due to the skill needed. If u see a noob playin miranda, its is incredibly obvious and, quite frankly, hilarious. I invite all to try out the miranda before they cry about it, with the recent patch, the miranda is harder than ever to use due its massive energy consumption and low energy recharge rates. When/if u try the miranda, try out the time-anchor, its a b*tch to learn to play, yet ppl love crying about it.
actually, i've figured out a bunch of stuff for the editor so i'm starting anew. it'll be much better this way. shouldn't be long before i have a pretty prototype to play on.

Pretty sure I know the answer to this, but just want to make sure.
If one of our team members loses connection during a game, they can just rejoin no problem right? Just asking because during our match with fLb there were a few times where one of my guys would drop out, but manage to come back in within 5-10 seconds causing neither side any notable problems.
Wow, I thought we were all set for the deadline. Apparently I didn't have IP addresses ready. All my people still really want to play, but I just need time to get their IP addresses. BTW I was at Prom tonight so this completely left my mind..
Edit: Give me Saturday to get everybody's IPs...that's all I ask (school was a bitch this last week and with everything going on Senior year this was at the bottom of my priority list).
Into The Walls vs. TS - TS will win 2-0 TS is too much for an ITW team that did not get in the practice needed to compete here.
ACE vs SnM - ACE will win 2-0 ACE is looking to be one of the best teams in the league. They play often and they have one of the top 5 players in the league in tyr. SnM cannot be written off this season because they've been getting practice as well. However, this game looks grim for SnM: individually, they just do not match up well versus the ACE team.
fLb vs. UDF fLb will win 2-0 If they get on during the week, fLb has the pilots to handle this in short order.
AF vs. V V will win 2-1 With a couple of obvious exceptions, most of the AF team do not yet have the experience to match up well against V's relatively stacked line up. If V can win this 2-0, you should start thinking about them in the playoffs.
V vs. UDF V will win 2-0 This match may be less of a challenge. UDF's pilots can bring this to 2-1. but V's roster just looks too good on paper to count out of this one.
Into The Walls vs. v3 ITW will win 2-1 v3 is already having roster difficulties and that does not bode well for them. ITW be able to count on locked, anch, and KeeN to bring the game home.
ACE vs. Your Mom ACE will win 2-1 Your Mom has a great team on paper and have a chance to compete for the playoffs. However, their great team is going up against one of the very best teams and will not be able to bring them down just yet.
Your Mom vs. TS TS will win 2-0 I'm not going to lie. Your Mom got the short end of the stick this week (that name is really great). ACE and then TS? Holy shit. If YM wins either of these games, look for them in the playoffs. Either way, these two early losses will make them a stronger team for the rest of the season.
v3 vs. Your Mom ym. will win 2-0 Here is where ym. begins to dominate. In a week where they will face arguably the two best teams in the league, v3. will simply not measure up to ym's game.
Into The Walls vs. SnM SnM will win 2-1 This could be close but if SnM puts in their time, they'll take it.
fLb vs. v3fLb will win 2-0 What can I say? I just think fLb is a good team. And until v3 gets a more steady roster (which should be week 2), I don't think they'll be able to take the teams they've drawn this week.
ACE vs. UDFACE will win 2-0 ACE's 4th best player would probably be UDF's best.
AF vs. SnMAF will win 2-1 This is another close game - but, for some reason, I am comfortable in picking AF. Unless AF doesn't get any practice in, they should take this after a good fight from SnM.
fLb vs. VfLb will win 2-1 fLb is not as good as V on paper and so this might just be considered an upset. V's got the individual talent over fLb though not by a large margin. fLb should have the team work over V by a larger margin.
AF vs. TS TS will win 2-0 TS won't drop a game for the entire week. Hey, I hope they do - for the sake of excitement - but I sincerely doubt that any of the games will even be close.
personally i think you underestimate V, now with the addition of a 10nth player, who will add an extra 1.14 Fz-s (thats the measurement of Awesome/Cool units= Fonzies) to team V-s Awesome Scale. we will be second to only Team Solid (which considering TS-s talent) is a pretty good place to be.
so good luck to eeeverybody, and i expect a bloody fight to the last plane from even the most in-experienced teams.

yeah, but i think most of the official message board overestimates themselves. obviously ts is the favorite going into the season, and i think v is the favorite for each week 1 game they are in (i picked an upset against them), but to say you are obviously 2nd best is silly. you're just not as stacked as ts is.
if your referring to me than im not even close to being offended (youll have to do better than that to offend me ).
also, i have a hairy feeling some underdog team is going to go "caffeine/sugar rush kekekekeke" and surprise us all. would make this shit more exciting
but only thor knows.
also i agree with devil. V is going to lose all games and win the ones you predicted we will lose. just to mess with your Oracle powers.
haha, i wasnt referring to you personally - i was referring to the official forum community in general, who all seem to think they are vastly superior to TL.
wait TL? is ACE the TL team in the league? in that case cool.
i think the superiority complex comes from the fact its a Team Game and psychological warfare etc. "omg your team is gay, my teams e-penis is like the size of mars".. is just part of it, personally i dont really care at all about this and hope this league thing will be fun, and season 1 to be just the tip of the iceberg for Altitude Competitive League thing.
Just as a note, when the TL server is in scrim mode and passworded, and you're not the one thats supposed to be playing a game at that time, please do not randomly join and spawn and start playing. Its fine for you to join and spectate if there are open slots, but please don't spawn.
In fact, while spectating, I'd recommend you run the following command: /captureMode true
That'll remove the possibility of you spawning, and it also removes the annoying interface that blocks the top/bottom parts of the screen.
Also what about lag? When I play i have like 30 ms lag but the average is like 150+. People teleport around occassionally and the lag effects my play a lot.
as far as me knowing how good everyone is, i'm basing it off of what i've seen in scrims and in public games. ive seen the vast majority of the people in the league play a decent amount. that said, i could be totally wrong. who cares? im just doing predictions for fun.
On April 25 2009 13:58 choboPEon wrote: here have some predictions because i am always right
Heh, I must say, good sir, your predictions about the fantastic team, V3, should be thought over once more. If one were to be betting on these predictions, you'd be likely to lose a sum of money.
Despite apparent complications in schedules for several of their team members (a day I personally saw several of their members searching matches for recruits and comparing players amongst themselves), 3 of their best players are apparently still ready for matches -- DevilsAdvocat, EliteAgent, and Bootstraps.
These 3 alone have been quite good in past weeks as I've watched them play -- especially Devils, who could very well be considered the most strategic bomb-carrier in the league. Agent and Boot fare well themselves at bombing, and all the members of the team seem to have excellent communication in matches with one another.
I'm sure if these 3 recruit some fill-in members that they can lead well, they'll do quite fine with their current matchups.
Besides, if bychance their full team can make it to a match, I'd bet the farm on V3 to win, and with much confidence.
lol at anyone taking the predictions that seriously
I'm just glad that chobo at least has SnM winning one game. I always thought that he's had it in for me since day 1, and seeing him give my team some credit shows that he at least has some <3 for me
ACE has shown it's awesomeness by owning IntoTheWalls in a friendly scrim match on every map of the league (2 times on some of them). Final score was like 11-0. I'm not kidding, but I failed at capturing screenshots so you'll have to trust me (or chobopeon).
I think it has brought much experience to all the players involved, and I can guarantee to everyone that it has nothing in common with public games. Much more intensity, much more speed and teamwork is absolutely vital.
There are 18 slots on the server, and only 10 players at any one time, so there should be slots open for observers. Just make sure you don't accidentally spawn and interfere with the matches. (Again, I recommend doing '/captureMode true' )

The truth was told. They had a full team for while, and we played with chobo as a sub since we had only 4. Eventually one of their players left and they subbed in Rage. I don't know exactly how many games were played, but it was about 10 or 11, and ACE took them all.

It's *really* difficult to avoid the 'us vs. them' mentality in most social situations. People who have been around a game longer will often assume they're superior to new players...just like people with high post counts on a forum assume their opinions should be held in higher regard than newer forum members. This isn't entirely unreasonable, but it should be obvious that 'length of time doing X' isn't the only factor that contributes to skill at a game / an ability to craft an insightful forum post.
Many of the players on the official forum have been playing the game for a long, long time. So, at this point, they're generally correct in assuming they're more skilled Altitude players. However, give TL players a couple more months to play and you'll see the skill gap close considerably.
Hopefully once the game ships people will just talk about 'the Altitude community' instead of speaking in terms of smaller factions.

[Don't get me wrong, teamwork is critical...and will be the deciding factor between evenly matched teams, but the dog-fighting skill of its members is still the most important component of a team's overall success.

Yea TLers put in a lot of time and improve very fast but any of the 3 teams from the official forums have a considerable advantage even against the better TL teams. I have to say though that a lot of the old schoolers in altitude aren't that great, there's a big difference between watching Pillars, Maimer, Protest boy etc. play compared to some of the others who are simply decent but already matched by some of the better TLers.
On April 27 2009 06:24 choboPEon wrote: which is why TS is on a different level and V is much closer to our level!
Or not really our level, but around ACE's level...maybe? We'll see when they actually play each other, but I'm not doubting TS in this league, they have both experience and a shitload of skill. Although from what I've seen of V, they have mostly just experience and some decent skill.
Into The Wallsvs. Team Solid To be streamed Monday, 8 PM EST (9:00 KST) on TL's Altitude Channel. Tune in to hear Tec27's and my super impressive commentary of the opening day match up.
] Into The Walls, or [30D.O.M], is facing off against the presumed giant of the league: Team Solid - [TS]. But what about Dio, Skywalker, Yankeeboy, and Protest Boy?
It should be on youtube within a day or two (may take me a couple days cause I'm limited to 650MB upload per day, and this will be HD and clock in around 700-800MB). Should look great on there though.
On April 28 2009 16:03 Rice wrote: i have a question, do the games have time limits? and if so how will the winner be decided? base damage? kills?
No time limit afaik.
hmm so what if the teams are both around even skill level yet very skilled and the game is going nowhere for hours?
Doubt that would ever happen, if it does occur though, a timelimit should be set but to something ridiculous like an hour+ so a team with an advantage won't just sit back and defend till time runs out. For now though I really don't see anything like this happening, not during the 1st season anyways.
that's really not realistic. even in 14v14 games in public servers with similarly skilled players, bombs get through. similar skills mean that the bombs might hit at the same time, not that the game will go on for infinity. and we already have a rule in case there is a tie from the bombs hitting at the same time - which i've seen. never seen a game last for hours, especially in 5v5.
Nice job with the video! For the next games I would suggest more frequent showing of the 'tab' screen during moments of inactivity (not many of those I know), or during/after the awards display when a game has ended.

See you Tuesday.

Apparently the devs have added in news about this league and threw in a plug for tec's mogulus channel I know the community's pretty small so the devs would no doubt appreciate the efforts here, but it was still a nice surprise.
I'm really keen to join a team, my avaliable times are around 3.30am-11.30am and 3.30pm-6.30pm, American EST, (thats 5am-8am and 5pm-1am central australian time) plus more depending on the day. I've been lvl 60 for ages and I go by Blimey in the game too
There seems like enough desire for another one. If you would like to join, just PM me with your name and ship of choice~ Once we get enough people, we will have to come up with a name :X We of course will be too late for this season's league, but maybe we can get some scrims in against other teams.

Lag helps instead of makes it harder that should be fixed lol i went liek 17-0 with lag cuz i would seem to time anchor and shit to others and when i fired it wasn't affected and usually always hit.
Game's out of beta now. Gotta buy it for $20 if you want full access to all the ships, except for this weekend and the next, when the full game will be temporarily free to everyone.
Btw, if you don't buy it you can still play with all the full registered users, and you're not really any less powerful. You just won't have access to all the fun perks/planes you get in the later levels.

what perks exactly are you not going to have acces to?

Nonsense. Some perks are better than others, and a considerable number of the more useful ones are unlocked later. There's a reason that pretty much everyone that has them uses repair/flex instead of either of the armour perks, flak tailgun over normal rear fire for bomber, and recoilless/heavy instead of normal biplane. Don't try and claim that the game is perfectly balanced in terms of plane choices.
hmm nice timing to get it out of beta... damn gamemakers... >_<; they probably figured the game was more popular than ever with the league starting and figured this was like their only way to ever make some cash.. have to say im not too impressed with the programming too, playing on 800x600 all things on low and still it doesnt run smooth on my laptop (1.6 ghz, 1gb ram) ... sure i dont have no fancy video card but games 5 yrs ago looked about the same and they would run supersmooth or too smooth now probably >_<; boo for them >_<;
Armed - I disagree. :o I'd say that heavy armor is tied with repair drone as the best green perk for most players, and Heavy Armor gets unlocked very early. And imo is significantly better for Loopy, who benefits a lot more from the extra survivability than he does from repair. Bomber I like Repair for, but meh. I think that's more an issue of playstyle than power.
and looking at the blue perks, the two best ones (turbocharger and ultracapacitor) are the first two you get. I guess you could argue that Ace Instincts is better for true badasses, but no one's going to be good enough to get a real advantage from it unless they've played quite a bit. In which case they should just buy the freaking game already.
I dunno, I mean I'd agree with you if all you got was Rubberized Hull and Reverse Thrust or something, but half my planes are outfitted with Heavy Armor and all of them have either Ultra or Turbo, so it's hard to say that level capped players are seriously disadvantaged perk-wise.
truthfully, a one time payment of 20 is pretty damn cheap. Let's try to support the devs even though it seems a bit fishy that it goes live when the league takes off lol
Hi TL, I'm one half of "Nimbly Games", the two guys who are developing Altitude. First off: thank you to chobopeon, tec, and everyone who has contributed to this league. It's incredibly satisfying to see the game we've spent the last 5 years developing adopted so passionately by such an awesome group of gamers. Your feedback will play a major role in shaping Altitude as a competitive game: in the future we will introduce new features designed specifically for league and competitive play.
I apologize for what seems like a sudden release -- I could have done a much better job communicating to the community exactly where we're going and how we plan to get there. I hope this post will allay your suspicions that we are trying to "cash in" on the league. We have been focused on nothing but release for at least the last 4 months: stress testing our update infrastructure, optimizing our master servers for concurrent user load, and expanding and streamlining the tutorial to help new users pick up the game. We've been telling everyone that we're "just a couple weeks away from launch" for so long that I figured an official announcement would be redundant -- in retrospect I should have made -this- post two weeks ago.
So -- why release now? Because all the infrastructure is finally ready. Releasing allows us to pivot towards promotion (getting mainstream reviews, etc) which will hopefully grow the user base substantially. We simply could not afford to start mass media publicity pre-release -- the bandwidth costs alone would kill us.
Altitude development has not stopped and I am very interested in seeing competitive play succeed. We will add features based on real needs identified by this league. We deliberately scheduled our free weekends around this league's schedule (Friday-Sunday, you can practice Friday and play Sat/Sun with no restrictions), and will continue to do our best to support the league -- but we can't afford to delay release another month.
Note on demo restrictions: during the weekdays, and once the free weekends are over, demo users will be limited to the following planes/perks: Loopy-Tracker Bomber-Suppressor Green-Rubberized Hull Blue-Turbocharger
Thanks again for your support! We will spend the next two weeks promoting Altitude far and wide, doing our best to increase the player base. For those who want to wait and see whether we can achieve critical mass--I don't blame you. Make the best of the free weekends and hopefully we will win you over with an active, growing community soon!
Thanks for being open and honest with us, lamster, I really value that. While I wish you would have made the release timing a bit more widely known beforehand, I understand how thats an easy mistake to make given the games long development cycle.
I for one have already bought game, I've definitely put enough time in for it to be worth $20 to me Now I just hope we'll see a nice increase in the player base.
Hmm while the free weekends are nice, they only last for 2 weeks which is less than the duration of the league. At the very best, maybe half of the league participants will actually buy the game which means pretty much every team will not have enough players unless they merge and that's a big mess in many ways.
Yeah I think the devs are missing a huge opportunity here. When you make an indie game, it's hard to compete on the graphics level, so you strive to get good gameplay, or a completely unique game.
If there's anything that's a testament of good gameplay, it's a smoothly runnign competitive scene. I'm afraid that they're rather gonna lose money (through their image) than make more by demanding this payment from league players. Not to mention a lot of league players aren't gonna buy it just 'cause they know alot of other people won't buy it either and the league will suffer from big problems.
I'm pretty sure ~80% of the league players would buy the game if they were certain 80% of the league players would buy it and they would be able to have a good league, but that's just not how it works. Uncertainty will probably make the league collapse
I don't know if chobopeon is planning any changes to the league to make sure players can always show up. I hope they extend the free weekends till the end of the league personally. Motivated, competitive people will certainly buy the game so they can practice during weekdays, people will be alot more secure about the league not collapsing so more will buy it too. The more casual players will maybe not buy it, but they probably wouldn't buy it without the extension either. I think thats probably the best thing they could do.
There aren't many indie games with balanced competitive play that actually involves a strategic aspect. The game could lose a lot of its potential if the league collapses. I'm a casual player myself, and will probably not buy the game, but I'm not saying this out of personal interest. I even like observing the scrims, and would not like seeing this game die on a competitive level.
i say less competition for us, but having an option after for teams to merge wouldnt be necessary as one team could just disband and add their remaining roster to the other teams, which as chobopeon is the contact he could help with (As he is the the one who will be notified of changes in teams).
On May 02 2009 06:03 NfoMonkey wrote: i say less competition for us, but having an option after for teams to merge wouldnt be necessary as one team could just disband and add their remaining roster to the other teams, which as chobopeon is the contact he could help with (As he is the the one who will be notified of changes in teams).
Less competition isn't a good thing in a competitive league -_-
$20 is a bargain. I paid $60 for war3 and played it for half as much time as I've already played Altitude.
And when you have developers who are as receptive to the players as lamster and Karl are, it becomes a no-brainer. I hope everyone who enjoys the game buys it. It's easily worth $20 now, and will only be getting better if we support it!
i agree its worth $20 but with APs coming up i probably wont buy it until later x.x
also i think this game does not have enough players yet so there will probably be even less players when you have to pay to play the whole game. this will make it difficult to get a game going with a decent number of people :\. the game is fun but its boring when you only have say one full server and the rest empty.
on a second note, going into a game with 10 loopys seem kind of ridiculous
On May 02 2009 06:03 NfoMonkey wrote: i say less competition for us, but having an option after for teams to merge wouldnt be necessary as one team could just disband and add their remaining roster to the other teams, which as chobopeon is the contact he could help with (As he is the the one who will be notified of changes in teams).

haha yeah, less competition makes it easier for everyone involved, but by no means is it better (seeing comments like this brings me back to the days when everyone I knew thought they were the best golden eye player in the world just because they could beat the kids in their neighborhood) Edit: littlechava and I are probably misinterpreting what nfo said though...
Anyways, I definitely will try to support this game and am planning to buy it. Although I'm broke as shit for the next month and probably won't be buying this game until June. If I knew ahead of time I wouldn't have blown my last $20 on tapes
I'll have to check on the situation with the rest of my team, but right now it seems like after these first 2 matches my team will either become non-existant, or an all loopy/bomber team.
If it seems like my team would rather disband than play all loopy, should I just disband now? Or at least play out our first two matches?
unless you really don't want to, please play the first two weeks. let me know what your team looks like.
if it helps people decide it sounds like most of the people i've talked to will be buying the game at some point (and a lot of others are heavily considering it depending on others actions. post here if you've bought the game already so that folks know.)

Have you considered changing the league format to some kind of bracket so we can get at least 1 tourney over with before time runs out?
On May 02 2009 12:43 choboPEon wrote: i would not be opposed but we're really looking to carry out a full season and i think it just might be possible if things work out.
Well I assume alot of the people won't be buying the game, and those people will only have the next 2 weekends to participate in something like this. Whereas the people who buy the game would be able to carry on a league for much longer.
I'm unlikely to buy. Although it was fun, the 30 hours I've spent on this has not been such a good thing for me, and paying would just cause me to spend even more time playing to make it feel worth it. That said, just $20 bucks for something that you spend that long on is a real bargain!
damn its only 20 bucks guys..... its a damned shame a game this good is gonna die just because they dont have a huge corporate backing SUPPORT ALTITUDE
dear people who are not showing up for scheduled matches,
please don't register for something and never show up or even talk to the team you are playing about possible rescheduling. it is extremely annoying and makes you all look like dicks.

Yeah, I'm really sorry about that. I already knew a week before hand that I wouldn't be showing up (actually I shouldn't even be here now, but I got cancelled on and showed up an hour late anyways...so I got fucked twice =/ ) although I couldn't really coordinate a proper time with my team and ACE for a better time to play, so I just let my team go on their own hoping they'd coordinate it themselves...although clearly that didn't work...

probably won't buy it.. $20 isnt justified for a game that's not even close to being finished (imo) and you can get better games at the same price... I also think the engine/netcode seems to be different (not in a good way) from other commercialy available games >.<;
doesnt mean the game is not good, just that compared to anything else on the market the price is way too high...
if the game was worth $20 because i played it 40 hrs, SC/BW woulda been the most expensive game in existance leading to my bankrupcy and every XBLA game should be at least doubled in price as well -_-;
hope the hypetrain at TL does some good for the makers tho, it's nice they have taken the risk to develop it...

we'll probably be able to play out the season by dropping a few teams that don't show up and allowing their members to try to join active teams. remember, if your team doesn't show up this week, your team is out of the league. glgl.

fyi, we will do our best to finish the season. obviously we will be losing a few teams but that doesn't mean that the players who have always showed up and put forward an effort should be let down. we'll finish season 1 and see how the game's publicity push goes and judge things from there.
so if you are on a team that is being let go (ill have a full list by tomorrow), you are free to join a team that is still in it. if you are on a team that is no being let go, thanks for showing up and thanks for the effort. you guys are awesome.

We're 0-3 so far.. I felt like I personally kind of sucked in all games but that certainly wasn't the main reason for us losing ^^
I think we came unprepared and underestimated the team games a lot.. It really would have helped if we had practiced as a team once before just to get the right feeling and experience on how to go about a good team match. Next to the fact that ACE & TS are good teams anyway, with the exp they had they totally beat us.
Next to that our 5th guy didn't show up but luckily Travis was there to fill in the gap. Unfortunately he forgot his shades, and he had to go after the first 2 games. We played our third game vs [ZS], with the exp and beatings we still had in mind from our previous games vs ACE & TS and also with 4 vs 5. We gave it our best shot and went 1-2 vs them, which kinda sucked because it really felt like we would've won with a 5th guy >.<
Too bad there's no ingame support for playing scrims like this, makes it a bit more disorganized than it already is :p I think & hope we'll do better next week

One of my servers has a new configuration now: Liquid Customs. Basically all of the custom maps (I think) that have come out of TeamLiquid so far, ripe and ready for testing The map pack url is in the server name, or you can get it here: http://avantageous.com/tlcustoms.zip
I'll keep that pack up to date with the latest versions, but hopefully they update the server software soon and I can just redirect map download requests to that server.

btw i cannot get on today. im having serious trouble connecting my pc to my house's wireless network and ive just got stuff to do so i cant spend all day on it. im sorry.
ill get on tomorrow either way cause ill just set this computer (a mac) up.
Ach sorry chobo noone knew the time because op not updated so noone had enough players, we all just had 4 each and did one big game. I think most teams still in it have bought the game though so we can do anytime.
Its definitely not a myth, I had an issue with constant lag spikes (graphically, anyway) and always suspected it was the friends list. Trimmed my list down to <20 people and I haven't had the issue since.
Edit: Also, sorry for not being around today, managed to get sick =/
A note for match scheduling: if we want to get these matches recorded, I probably won't be able to record a match until thursday or later (stupid finals )

None of them took place, op wasnt updated so noone knew times and no team could get 5 members on. Ts had 3, flb had 4, V at first had 4 then got 5, ACE had 3. We just played one big game for the hell of it but nothing official happened.

sorry again for the delay everyone. should get on the road soon!
We should finish this season up quicklly and get the word out with the influx of community i feel there will be alot of new teams.
Those are all really good, even though they whine incessantly about how terrible their team is >,<
Pretty hilarious to play altitude these days tho.. only newbies(lvl 0-20) online @ eurotime. Usually it's like 1 guy typing in teamchat(caps lock on ofc) telling everyone what to do and why they're so bad, then there's 5 guys all responding in their native language(no one understands a fuck), all the while half the team is circling the bomb spawn.
i noticed the surge of new players. But its a good thing. I know how bad I was when I started. I was able to play competently when I got miranda, but that was kind of gimicky. Miranda is fairly easy to fly compaired to other planes because of their slow speed and the ability to reverse out of trouble/stall. It plays so differently that I couldn't play any other planes when I was maining miranda.
uhh i kind of went off on a tangent there. Anyways, we should give them time and some of them will get good I supose. I think TL is just that much more talented. We produced some really good players in a short time.
So I heard that the league isn't going well... I wish I could have joined It's fun to get in games with some of the top players, but ferret and protest boy make me feel like a chobo

okay, sorry. i havent been able to get on altitude or irc because my pc isn't working since i moved back to the city. ill fix up the game times right now.
Might need to re-schedule to another weekend...changing the times of the games 24-48 hours before the games are to be played is going to hurt turn-out.
i wont be able to be in game again this weekend. ive moved since the last time i was on and my pc isnt working. i really hope this has no effect on the games - dont need me to hop in server and start up! im sorry about the lack of my help lately though. stupidly, i didnt foresee moving as being so disruptive. silly me. :[
By the way, i'd like to thank Team Vapor to let us play on equal numbers yesterday (3v3 and 4v4). We were ready to play 3 on 5 but they were kind enough to reduce the number of their players. The games were fun and nice (3v3 and 4v4 are actually very interresting), and they won 3-1. GG again.
I just bought the game. That makes us 4 ACE players to have it, even though i havent seen armed for some time now. Anyways, I think we'll recruit 2 or 3 more guys for next season.
so now we define people as either TL or vet? iv been playin since the level cap was 40, but certainly not since the old version, but is tarted before TL got involved in this altitude business. I guess I just fall through the cracks 0.0
I was thinking vets = people who were playing before it came up on TL. People like protest, ferret, moxie, etc etc. Some peopel really do belong in both catagories though haha.
I see so many lvl 60s these days. Alot of them are terribad. Some of them STILL go solely for turrets . . .

What better way to support independent developers? A pat on the back doesn't help them pay rent and actually survive as a company.

Yeah, it's still alive, and growing [albeit slowly.] The gameplay is very fun, and it has the potential to spawn leagues and such if it becomes popular enough. I think it's easily worth $20 even now, though you and I might value money differently.
Bumping this to say it is official Team Liquid owns Altitude. fLb and ACE are the top 2 teams in the new league (fLb being top ofcourse :3). These are two of the original TL teams. In addition ZS/fLbSS are both like half TL members and in top 6.

As you might remember, the TL population dropped pretty sharply after the game went out of beta, but theres still a bunch of us on every day, and there's always a few full games to join. A few people, mostly ACE and Kuja hang out in tl.altitude on quakenet irc.
and there's also the handful of us that knew about altitude before the TL wave, but who would still say that i'm from TL if asked.
and chobopeon, there's been a full league since you left, and we are currently in the midst of a third. your league unfortunately never finished (the finals were never played), but i dare say your league was the forerunner to competitive tournament play in altitude in its present form.
Ignore tyr, he's just messing around. fLb won the finals in a close match against ACE, I believe either 4-2 or 4-3 in a Bo7. The standings of the current league in the regular season round-robin has ACE leading, however, being undefeated 7-0.
@Scaramanga: The game suffered an initial hit in population when they started charging for it as well as a hit in the quality of players when the apple.com store players started flooding in, but by now it's well rebounded from that. The gameplay is stable (balance changes haven't occurred for a long time and haven't been really necessary) yet the developers still release bug fixes and general polish fixes to the game every week. Every so often, new game modes are made. And as you can see, competitive Altitude is still flourishing, with leagues still occurring on a regular basis (and finishing!)
This game is well worth the $20, it's no simple, easily-made flash game on the internet that can be made free. The game is completely ad-free, and Lamster has been developing this game for literally YEARS (I remember playing an earlier incarnation of this game back in 2004-2005) on his own time. Only recently has he gotten some payoff from the game.
It's true that if you play this game for ~50 hours or so, its cost per hour isn't nearly as low as that of Starcraft. However, Starcraft itself is its own anomaly -- most published games you can buy at stores that have mostly a single player element (RPGs, action-adventure games) cost nearly $60 for only maybe 20-40 hours of play. I would gladly pay twice the amount I had to give in order to play this game if the developers needed it. They deserve it.
@Scaramanga: You are wrong. I suspect that you are still have a deep-seeded addiction to Altitude, and are trying to convince yourself not to play again. Just give in and do it.
@nobodyhome: It was 4-3 for fLb, but two of the games we lost had three bomb hits on either side, but fLb's 3 hits finished the base while our three hits left theirs with a sliver of health. Ridiculously close series.
Also, I was watching the old ACE vs Vapor VODs, lol. Such sloppy sloppy play, it's amazing. The good old 'no explodet' composition! Plus I had never seen that chobopeon added that bit at the end with the 'best kamikaze' 'best bomb block' etc. That was really cool.
The current league is ours anyway. I don't really see who can stop us. fLbSS has a decent team but they lack teamwork in neutral bomb maps. Original fLb is pretty much dead at this point, most of their players don't even play anymore.
