do you think two months of hard core playing would be able to get me to a point where i can just start paying for my subsscription with in game money?

It's very possible. People have successfully taken the 5k ISK you start with and turned it in to billions within a single month simply by reselling things on the market. There's so many ways to make obscene amounts of money in this game if you're smart.

Hey dexxus, you seem extremely knowledgeable so I hope you don't mind me throwing this question at you:

I read some of the stuff in that thread and I was thinking about playing the game (at the very least I want to take it for a test drive with the trial). What I'm wondering is, is it at all possible to play the game with any success without joining one of those big corporations? I'd prefer to just do my own thing rather than move in a big group. Obviously the only way to reach the pinnacle of the game (as in any MMO) is to play for years and have a high position in the very best guild, but can you at least have some fun and get a decent ship without any of the corporation nonsense?

If it is possible, is there any race/ship that favors this kind of play? I guess that's a lot more than one question, but I appreciate any answers.

It is possible to play the game as a loner, but it definitely isn't ideal.

EVE is best looked at not as a game per se, but as a simulation of futuristic politics/humanity in the future. Unlike other games such as WOW or Starcraft,"Playing EVE" isn't actually that thrilling all in itself. There's very little to putting ships together and flying them around. What makes the game so unique and fun are the political aspects and watching the results of your actions, not necessarily the actions themselves (as is the case with most games).

People (mostly the bitter vet crowd) often joke that 95% of EVE can be enjoyed while not actually subscribed, all you have to do is read the various forums. To be honest that isn't very far from the truth.

Despite all that, it's a game I'll probably never unsubscribe to if for no other reason than the fact as I feel it's the only active MMO that's really making use of the unique properties of the MMO genre and I wish more developers (hi blizzard) would lean more in a sandbox style direction for their MMOs.

There's nothing to really lose for trying the game out, but I honestly feel the only way to enjoy actually playing EVE is to do so in a mega-corporation such as Goonfleet that plays a major role in the politics of the game. Otherwise you're really just a spectator in the major portion of the game and you can do that unsubscribed.

Just to put it out there, while there are easy to get 14 day free trials everywhere, you can get 21 day trials from subscribed players which gives you a little more time to get a feel for the game. If anyone wants one PM me their e-mail and I'll toss one your way.

Wow, that's a hell of an answer. Thanks a lot for taking the time to write all that. It seems to be a very unique game in the MMO genre from what you've described.

I'm a pretty stubborn guy though, and I'd still like to experiment with the "loner" style of play during the trial. Is there any particular race that facilitates it the best?

If you're dead set on solo pvp during the trial you should stick to frigates. The rifter is the best solo frig so i'd start as a Minmatar. I'd go in to more detail but I'm on my phone right now so typing is a pita.

Ive been playing this game for the last week (21 day trial off steam),

Im still not really sure whether I like it or not.

Making money seems very easy. I made 20mil in the first 5 days and was planning on buying a battlecruiser. Turns out you cant train battlecruisers in trials though. So now Im going for the best cruiser, and Ill have enough cash to pimp it out very easily. The only thing Im waiting for is the skills.

What do you actually do when your in a corporation however? Is PvP the only thing you do?

I've had to answer this question so many times since I resubscribed to EvE.

EvE is a sandbox game, so the question becomes "What do you want to do?". Most people take a sandbox, and try to construct things out of it. Some people will gather their friends and build something amazing out of all that sand. Other people will fling globs of wet sand at their neighbor's dog. Others will wet themselves down and roll around in it, only to have their mothers clean them up.

The question is "What do you want to do?". If you think group PvP is fun, by all means join a corporation. But then you ask yourself, "What kind of PvP?" because you can pirate, and then you ask yourself, "What kind of pirating?" because there's noob-bashing, solo-ganking, small roaming gang ganking, etc., etc.

Our corporation is being set up to be a completely self-sufficient empire. What that means is we have our PvPers who will defend our assets in times of war, our mission runners, who see fit to make money for themselves and the corp (mission running is the biggest thing that is taxed in a corporation), the miners, who sit in an asteroid belt and bring in minerals for the industrialists, who will be the ones building our replacement ships and parts, our Fleet Commanders and Officers (Me, Dexxus, and a few others), who do a little bit of everything partially because we enjoy it and partially because we have to.

That aside, this sandbox game is described by its developers as "The USA's wild west of the 1800s". That is, the lawlessness, and the freedom to commit crimes without retribution from a government agency. You make your own justice. Everything you do in EvE is PvP related. Did you mine minerals and sell them on the market? Someone bought those and is going to use them to build their war machine. Buy a module off the market? You just paid for someone's new ship to kill their foes. Fire your guns at another player? That's the most direct PvP there is.

Everything you do in EvE is PvP related, directly or indirectly. What aspect of that that you want to do is your choice.

Salvaging

You take a mission where you are told to go rape a bunch of NPC pirates. You go there, rape em good, then fly back to a station and re-equip your ship with mass salvagers. Then just go and salvage all the corpses. You can easily make a mill in 30 mins.

If you haven't already, I suggest you make a dedicated salvage ship.
Complete your mission, i.e. get your mission reward from your agent and come back in your salvage ship.

Train destroyer lvl 1. (Don't have to train past lvl 1, I don't like destroyers or Dictors so I never saw the need. After frigs, most people go straight to cruisers.)
Highs: 4 tractor beams, 4 salvagers.
Mids: Microwarp Drive, As many Cap Rechargers as you can
Lows: All Expanded Cargoholds

I think you already know but to others - make sure you remember to bookmark each pocket.
When you accept your mission rewards there's no longer an automatic warp to point.
At each stage of a mission, just go to your address book, places, and add a new bookmark. It basically saves the spot you're currently at so you can return anytime you want. You can remove the bookmark when you're done salvaging.

You should rename the corp to Team Liquid

I've played this game for a damn long time, was a dedicated manufacturer/researcher/trader so I've got all production skills/etc. I just reactivated my account today to check out my assets.

If you want some logistical/manufacturing support send "Fortune X" a pm. I can fly Hulk & Obelisk (freighter).
