I check for capacitor remaining when perma-MWDing only, and use that as a starting point to judge how long my capacitor will actually last. | ||

One of them involves some raw mathematics and some intuition about the interaction of multiple rates, but suffice it to say that EFT/pyfa isn't generally a good indicator of how a ship will behave unless it's showing cap-stable. There are things you can do to form a stable equilibrium with 2 or 3 light switches draining power from a slowly-recharging battery - particularly a battery with a notable peak recharge. Two otherwise identical setups with the same drain per second behave differently depending on the size and distribution of the drain events - with the smaller frequent events being favored over larger infrequent events because of the closer relationship with continuous drain. The other more general and generally more important aspect is what can be thought of gas mileage. When an Oracle fires off its MWD, it can go some distance r in one cycle. When a Zealot fires off its MWD, it can go something like 1.5r. It gets 50% more distance for the same capacitor usage. When in you're the slowest ship in a fleet, you can build up a certain perception about how much capacitor is needed to reasonably be able to field a ship - and it will not apply to every other ship faster than you. The most extreme example I can think of is flying a fleet made up of battleships with frigate support. You could fly frigates with 30s or less capacitor in EFT/pyfa and be totally fine whereas the battleships' perception is that it would be entirely infeasible. I once did some work on whether or not I should switch my meta MWD to a T2 MWD on the Zealot - because there are very many situations where I spend <30% of the time MWDing. I came to the conclusion that the possible advantages were small and possible disadvantages quite large. But still, I looked at it in the first place because the repeated experiences I had with the ship was that it worked primarily outside of MWD. | ||
