The game really doesn't make out as well as it sounds. Don't get me wrong, I like the game, but there's a reason that the number of subscriptions only totals ~200-250k? [edit] I do a poor job at promoting the game heh
quoting myself from a blog:
The problem I had with EVE is that you really need an alt to be able to sustain pvp activity with ships larger than t1 cruisers.
Speaking from experience, lowsec pvp without an alt is incredibly hard. Even if you could make decent isk off pvp (good luck - most ships that venture into lowsec are just passing through and/or fitted with shitty T1 items and most of the good systems are already occupied), you'd have to ask corp mates to freighter shit in.
Rarely do lowsec corps have the industrial backbone to offer modules of great variety so you have to be self sustaining. The ones that do, GL getting in as a newb.
If you're not willing to shell out for second account, my advice for people new to the game would be to join a high sec wardec corp if you can. You can try your hand at lowsec but be weary of dropping your sec too low. Going from -10 back up to -1.9 can be downright painful if you don't find a good 0.0 pocket to rat.
That or join 0.0 alliance off the bat (any alliance that lets a newb in sucks anyway) but it isn't my play style or something my laptop can handle.
It's incredibly important for new players to find a good corp early on to show you the ropes (EVE isn't a solo friendly game to begin with, unless all you want to do is mission in highsec). Look at the forums and good corp killboards (BOB, Pandemic Legion, etc) to familiarize yourself with good fits.
Scrapheap-challenge.com is a good site for EVE related things.

Man I remember reading about that huge fraud where some guy stole millions of credits and I thought that was a good read. This game just sounds soooo exciting. That literally read almost like a story instead of the events of a game. The freedom just sounds soo nice but it would take a shitload of work and time to get even close to the level of these current superpowers. Heh its a cool thought though of TL suddenly all starting up at once and allying quickly then slowly slowly but surely building up strength....not too fast and very subtly until they strike at these massive warring factions and take them all down by force or surrender/alliance while they are weak from the constant struggle. Would be sweet ;p

About starting to play: There are a million reasons not to, I know. It just seems to attractive sometimes. If there were a TL contingent that started at the same time it'd be way easier to overcome some of the difficulties.

Man, i'd totally be up for a TL squad :D

That story where the guy stole millions of isk in the beginning was not fictional.
I remember the days when Moa's with lasers made you big shit on the block. That was... 6+ years ago....so much time wasted.

Great read, same with the scam one, part of the reason why it's so entertaining is also because the stories are delivered with great style that's easy to understand yet enjoyable . Anyone have a link to the apparent "assassination/spying" stories?

did you not read about how many people already play eve? it would take a huge huge amount of time for tl.net to make any impact at all, even assuming that we were already good at the game to begin with

That seems like the biggest advantage.
Its like a lot of work to be able to do a lot of work. Somehow this is fun? It makes no sense that I want to play...

holy shit that was an awesome read.
it sucks that the game is actually nothing like that, or so I hear.

EvE is bar non-awesome...been playing it almost 2 years now ......If your really interested in this game then wait till the new expansion is released on march 10th...am sure they gonna have a promo or something for new people coming in and it will be the first expansion that will heavily i think help the newbies ....
So my next question here is who plays? ......

That is one of the main reasons russia turned the war against Germany, when they could finally inject morale into their soldiers, otherwise they would have lost the war.

God I miss eve. If there wasn't a subscription I would be spending 3-5 hours a day scamming, pirating, and lying. Eve, it makes you evil.
|
Also I sort of forgot to mention, but once you start making enough isk you can start buying Game Time Cards with the in game currency so basically you will be playing for free if you don't count the time spent earning that money.....

woww thanks for posting
I haven't read the whole thing yet but it sounds so awesome, like reading a story or looking at a history. really does not sound like a game the way it's written

I'd start playing again if there were people I knew (like tl.net) playing in a single corporation, and we either joined or started our own alliance.
I was a member of The Dead Parrot Shoppe for over a year, and they single-handedly started the BRUCE (Brutally Clever Empire) alliance, which quickly rose to power (and apparently fell from what was said earlier in this thread). It takes many things to accomplish such a feat, the big ones being perseverance, discipline, good leadership, and trust. EvE is a game about trusting the right people, and the OP showed us that you can't trust hardly anybody in EvE, because one day they might be in a position of power to unravel everything you've ever done.
My character currently sits collecting dust. He has several corporation skills trained already. I could start a corporation for us to join in moments from the time that I re-downloaded the client (that's the part that would take a while )

BEST READ EVER.
I just spent like 5 hours reading that. So incredibly epic.
I really like reading about this kind of people-war thing. It's different from reading about an epic starcraft match, that's still only 1v1. When you have to deal with lines of communication, morale, propaganda, that's really epic.
damn.

I think im going to try the free trial just to see how the game works, but I doubt ill play further unless I have ppl to play with and learn the ropes with. Going solo an MMOs takes more then half the fun out of it to me.
