They always went 2 bands/boots/bottle/tp scroll into travels/pt. booster into mael/mjoll/skadi.
[Analytical rpf rant]I was rambling about this last night, but I'm having trouble knowing when and why I should upgrade my circlets to whatever items.
For example, say I'm playing razor. Do I want 2 bracers for the HP? Or do I want 2 bands for the dmg/IAS? Or do I want a third band?
Or say I'm necrolyte. Do I want 2 bracers? Or 2 nulls? Or 3?
I just have trouble deciding what to upgrade my circlets to. I often see heroes go with 3 of whatever their main stat is, which obviously is good for last hitting, and seems to be a nice compromise between their main stat and HP, as 3 nulls/bands is the same str gain as 1.5 bracers.
And when do you decide to grab a third circlet? If it's just preference, then okay. We all have our own playstyles. I just don't know when I'm watching a replay if their item choice is their own preference or if it's more of a strategical thing. [/Analytical rpf rant] Short answer is it depends. Theres no clear answer to this, but be happy in the fact that you will be eventually experienced enough to make the more correct choice. It really does just depends on a lot of factors. I really hate to admit this, but I'm often too impatient to wait to learn things through experience. My mind is far too structured and orderly for me to just accept "it depends" as an answer. But that's what I get for having such an analytical nature. There are about 3 general guides on dota-allstars.com, the notable one, albeit outdated is the one by in_deed, then theres renegade's guide on lanes, the last one which you should read last is the proper warding one. Then you need to read the mechanics guides for general spell ideas, so you don't waste your items or think an item does something when it doesn't, i.e.- lifesteal on illusions, idiotic PLs going MoM instead of Diffusal. On a sidenote, PL/CK were buffed in the last versions, gogo PL carry.
dota is a game where your heroe is not the most important thing. To be good at dota you need mainly 4 things: Looking at the minimap always(map awarness), Talk with your teammates (ventrilo typing whatever suites you) ,knowing all the heroes and the mana cost of their spells , having enough micro and knowledge of your heroe's animation in order to lasthit well (includes denying) the range etc. All 4 imho come from playing , theory will only help once you have a certain knowledge in all 4 aspects.

I'm pretty terrible at this game (have only been playing a few weeks and have yet to be able to try out some of the cooler items/heros) but here's my 2cents on your dota questions:
Let me start off by saying that the mindset you describe is not analytical at all. In fact it is the exact opposite. If you truly had an "analytical nature" you would be constantly trying to analyze what your opponent is doing/going to do and adapting accordingly so that you can always stay one step ahead. This is just simple game theory. Granted, there will be times you will win with your fixed strategy but they will mostly be due to superior micro and better mechanics. I'm sorry to say, but with the kind of mindset you have you are destined for mediocrity. Not just at dota but at pretty much any game you play. Assuming similar mechanics, the more readily and precisely you are able to read your opponent and adapt accordingly, the better player you are.
Here are some examples of things that might influence your decision on when to buy an item and what item to buy: - Am I soloing / Am I laning with a decent ally? - Are my opponents ranged or melee? - Am I ranged or melee? - How fast am I moving in comparison to my opponents? - Do I have any items/skills that allow me to escape when in low hp? - How much dps are my opponents doing? - How aggressive can i be in my lane? - How are the other lanes doing? - Do the opponents have wards / scouting ablilities? - Should I be afraid of ambushes from other lanes? - Given the above, would it be more helpful to have additional hp to stay in lane longer or additional mana/dps for ganking potential? - etc. - etc.
Bottom line: it depends.
Btw it's great to have that inquisitive nature, but asking such specific questions can lead to incorrect answers since we do not see the whole picture. Perhaps it's just me but I feel that game sense is something that develops much more rapidly with personal experience and practice.

Map awareness, sick micro, knowing it all( mana costs-path routings-spell durations- spell damages etc, item counters) is the entire game ....... Like at starcraft forum I really don't get why people even theorycraft about this game while playing at a very low level. If you wan't to become good there is only authority and that is better players. Even if you don't understand why they get those items you will still have to get them, because in all likeliness they are right and you are not.
So rpf if you see good players ALWAYS do something, then just copy paste it;( Trying to understand a game on a higher level until you reach a certain point has little us, because in your reasoning you make many flawed assumptions.

I am not saying you shouldn't think about your game. But here is how it is. You play this game, you see other people play and you should adapt to that. You will know what works well and what doesn't. Now you can even watch replays of the very best players and see what they do. Clearly they are on a higher level, so what they do can't be very wrong. I see posts where people question plays from better players and try to make arguments as to why they are right. This debating and theorycrafting is all fine I guess. but he reason why I find it so hilarious is that I see some very bad players make elaborate posts which are faulted in every single way. You become good by watching better players and trying to copy what they do and apply the same logic they use in their games. Until you reach a certain point where you understand and feel the game flow well enough to get away from standard play and can try to ascend above normal players. For a player like bly's or RPF's level it has very little use to debate why a mirana gets the items she does, until rpf has at least played every hero a couple times and understands at what point you need which item and why. For them it's much more useful to basically copy a build play it a couple of times and then think it over.
If you think about builds too much without having complete information you will be destined to remain a thinking sucky player for the rest of time, while other copy donkeys have at least reached a higher level than you, albeit it be mediocre. Mediocre is at least a step closer to awesome than newbie.

dev u r so wise, my baby <3

sorry to mock you rpf, but you were having the exact same very 'deep' thoughts about very small things which don't really matter, while ignoring the huge improvements you could make in other areas, when you started playing starcraft like 5 years ago, and I already made fun of you for it, you should've learned :-)

So I pretty much said the same shit like 20 pages back, albeit not in a nice manner because it got annoying.
Whatever.
My ex-teammate's team which includes me as a backup is getting my old team's spot and getting moved up to cal-i woot.
