Quite an awful review, but I kind of agree with its overall assessment (as they're reviewing the F2p Version, which is quite awful indeed).

Besides, I don't really know what kind of criteria this site has. HoN has 5.8 there and LoL has 8.2, it's all I need to know...

Pretty sure there is no single player for hon XD The problem with calling this kind of games MMO is the "massive" part, just like with Diablo. I think it originally intended to represet huge numbers of people able to interact with each other ingame, not 5 or 10. If we ignore it, there is no reason not to call it simply Online RPGs, Online games, etc. It was never about single player/multiplayer, else Counter Strike would be a MMO as well. And if we start calling every single game that is played online an MMO, games like WoW are suddenly the same thing as games like Diablo, when there is a pretty big diference.

There's a really simple fix to this. Upon account creation, ask the player their previous experience in the genre (none, low, high) with high placing them at 1500, low 1400, none 1300. Could be adjustable, but I mean it would make the game much more noob friendly. (Aside from smurfing... but that already happens)

LoL is played more because it has a far lower skill ceiling right from the get-go; casual players can jump in and not completely throw a game by not knowing what they are doing. However, join your first hon game ever without knowing how to deny and you've at least lost your lane and the community will ensure you've lost a ton of belief in the game.

Too many heroes to choose from... and that's based on the F2P version? Wow. I gotta agree with the last paragraph though : Ram issues and lack of casual options severely hurt what could be a very good game, but in its current form, unless you want to dive head first into the meta-game Heroes of Newerth does not offer much in the way of casual player satisfaction. There is a new patch on its way though, with map customization to boot and there has been talk of bots thrown in with that also. . But that part is a real joke : If that is the case when it lands on the live servers then Heroes of Newerth will elevate its standings with everyone just a bit higher. It’s a shame that over a year had to pass before the game caught up with the options offered in Warcraft 3. Elevate to DotA... because there's no bots? Who the hell wants to play with bots? There's also no map customization at all in DotA, unless you wanna make your own variations and play with own friends, the guy has no idea what he's talking about.

I am one of the people that never played HoN, and not much of SC2, and jumped right in. Needless to say, it was a solid 10 games before I got a single kill. And the grief I got was epic. Fortunately, I always prefaced all my games(and still do sometimes, lol) with a team chat stating that I am new, help me out all you can, and i apologize in advance for making you lose the game, but I have to start somehow.

You see there is no problem with that; i assume people generally respond positively? I absolutely cannot stand people that feed, throw, and screw up.. but then blame absolutely every body else on the team. If i have a shit game, i apologise, "sorry guys, it's just not happening today, my bad." Someone that instapicks and yells ME MID and then feeds and loses lane, sits in fountain and griefs for 15min absolutely drives me insane.

On October 21 2011 05:31 Nevuk wrote: I think the vast reason why lol is played more is that it caters to new people in every way possible. But the main one being that a new lol account won't be facing mid-range lol players (basically level 25-30) while a new hon account will for at least 5-6 games. So instead of being matched against newb players you're playing against bad average players who will, of course, stomp you. There's a really simple fix to this. Upon account creation, ask the player their previous experience in the genre (none, low, high) with high placing them at 1500, low 1400, none 1300. Could be adjustable, but I mean it would make the game much more noob friendly. (Aside from smurfing... but that already happens) this is huge, I play both games, and the variance in skill in hon games, is much higher. This might be due to the game's populations and the fact you start at 1500 in HoN. I really dislike playing vs smurfs in Hon, and it happens all the time. I don't like it when their on my team either. LoL makes you play till level 30 before you can play ranked, it also does a good job of detecting if your a smurf, and matching you with other smurfs if your on your way to 30. I have exciting close lol games all the time, where most of my Hon games are really one sided, and usually the people in my games in Hon have awful mechanics except for 1/2 people I mean awful awful awful. Yet even at my highest mmr(not very high like 1630 so it might change later) in Hon I have yet to see balanced teams more than 1/5 games. I would say that as someone coming into the game who doesn't really have experience, they will be very put off by Hon(I don't like to get crushed, or to crush other team very much, I want an even exciting game), and probably continue to play LoL, which is why you see these kinds of reviews. I wouldn't pay much attention to that specific review since it's pretty awful though. There are other reasons why LoL is more noob friendly, but you probably know those already, I like denying etc, but it's pretty much personal preference, I could care less which game people choose to play.

Pretty sure there is no single player for hon XD theres no more than 10 people in each game though, you're not really competing with anybody else outside of the game at a given time (unless you really consider MMR as a true ranking) so yea... they shouldnt even be reviewing LoL either. i'm just guessing they just want to stick their foot in this market

I guess what HoN really needs is some links for new accounts pointing you to their or Nigma's game guides on YT, or better yet, embed them in the game as video tutorial. This stuff would be priceless for newcomers:
