So, I have the following questions:Is this to be expected? Does this game have a painful entry level learning curve? Most importantly, is it worth it to learn HoN or, as a new moba player, am I better off sticking with LoL?

I must say, even though I understood the objectives, I had absolutely no idea what was going on. First, I had a really hard time differentiating between enemies and teammates. Secondly, the damage, pace of gameplay, and ease of death was extremely overwhelming. Finally, after a single death, in a solo top lane, I was bombarded with noob, feeder, scrub, asshole baddie. So, I have the following questions:Is this to be expected? Does this game have a painful entry level learning curve? Most importantly, is it worth it to learn HoN or, as a new moba player, am I better off sticking with LoL? The very first thing you need to learn about HoN is that the community is disgusting; you will be flamed - for everything! Ignore it; grow some thick skin and just focus on getting better. The skill ceiling in HoN is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than in LoL - from denying creeps to losing gold on death and even having to navigate away from your hero; all these things require extra ability. I would recommend play public games with no stats as a starting point. This way you can fail as much as you want without any repercussions. The damage, pace of gameplay and ease of death all comes down to understanding the game, the heroes and the skills required; once you know what each hero is capable of you can understand how vulnerable you are in certain points etc; basically it's just practice practice practice. On your last point - i personally feel HoN is better than LoL in every single dimension but if you go to the LoL forum you will probably get a different answer. Anymore specific questions?

Does this game have a painful entry level learning curve? Probably the most painful I've ever dealt with aside from Dwarf Fortress, lol. It's pretty torturous. You have MOBA experience which will help you learn easier than someone like me who started from scratch. Most importantly, is it worth it to learn HoN or, as a new moba player, am I better off sticking with LoL? I guess it boils down to the type of gaming experience you want. LoL is obviously better for casual fun gaming, and HoN is more for serious competitive gaming. HoN is like BroodWar to me. It's a hard game to learn. But when you win, it's the sweetest taste ever because you feel like you earned it.

Thank you for your responses, they are much appreciated. As I'm extremely competitive, I feel compelled to give this game some more time. So, with that said, I actually do have a few more specific questions. I'll try to keep them simple so it won't take up much of your time or anyone else who might answer. 1. When you click on matchmaking, what's the difference between normal and casual mode? 2. Can you create games with bots? 3. Is there a site with guides for champion/item builds? It would be much easier to just follow a guide and focus on the mechanics of the game while I'm learning. 4. Is there a particular hero type that would be best for a newbie like me? Agility, intellect, strength, tank, ranged etc.. These questions are open to everyone. I'm hyper competitive about gaming so after hearing about the HoN/Dota scene I'm quite intrigued.

The competitive aspect of HoN is what brought me to try the game in the first place.

2. Bots don't teach you anything, the only real thing you should do by yourself is to run around the map by yourself and get comfortable with the shop UIs. You'll pick up all of this eventually, but to speed the process up you can just do that. 3. Any fansite will have guides, but I am not sure if HoN forums distinguish well-written ones like DotA does. Keep in mind that guides are just that, guides, pay more attention to why said builds and items are suggested rather than what is being suggested. If the guide doesn't give information like that, then you need to fill in the blanks. 4. Play whatever you want, I know NotJack will have a differing opinion and you can find our discussion on the matter over the past 5+ pages. I am for whatever you think it's good and he says there are specific heroes, there's really no right or wrong answer in either case.

I'm hyper competitive about gaming so after hearing about the HoN/Dota scene I'm quite intrigued. 1) Casual Mode is similar to LoL - denies don't reduce XP, you get extra gold or you don't lose gold on death - it's pretty much "easy mode" 2) There is a tutorial in game; that is as much as i know about AI in HoN; just play No Stats - noone cares about no stats and it's a great way to get in game experience. Alternatively you can "create game" and choose "practice mode" - this simulates the map and you can choose a hero, max your skills, buy items etc etc 3) there are many - Google it and you will see; there are also in game guide. When you press B to buy items (or click on shop) in game the first page is a recommended items list; on the right is a recommended skill build - they aren't the be all and end all as everything is situational but it is an ok place to start. 4) Pick a hero you enjoy; hammerstorm is easy, so is blacksmith, andromeda, etc but they all fill different roles. If you simulate practice mode and find a hero you enjoy come back and ask questions and someone will answer =D

i guess in low level games, but playing andro WELL is hard as hell recommended beginner heroes - blacksmith, witch slayer, plague rider, swiftblade, hammerstorm I guess, pollywog priest, electrician, pestilence.. these are just heroes with simple skills that require less decision making / situational use to be successful.
