assuming you know how to play correctly it's lag (or possibly your controller/stick, or both). When someone jumps in to attack and you are blocking low, it hits high and you don't block it like an overhead attack. Also when someone jumps in to attack they may cross you up which is where they hit behind your head, and in order to block this you must block the other direction.
Sorry if you already knew all this, I don't mean to patronize you.
PS- I have similar problems with even playing versus mode with friends. I'll be walking forward and then they do an attack and I'll press back immediately but I'll still take the hit. Or a guy will jump attack and I'll be normal blocking and see that it's going to cross up instead and switch direction and still get hit.
Yeah I knew that stuff. What I was asking about was after I block the jumping attack high, I immediately hold down+back, yet the attack will still hit alot of the time.
Also if anyone plays viper I'm confused about a couple things. I read somewhere that you can ultra after ex seismo burning kick when you arent in the corner, but I've done it maybe once out of all the times i've done that sequence. Is there some trick you need to do, or is it just really hard to get the timing?
Is there an easier way to do get the ultra motion out after superjump cancelling ex seismo? It seems almost impossible to do it that fast on a pad.
its character and positioning specific. althou ive landed it several times on training on sagat/gief/balrog more than the rest of the cast
vipers ultra has so much factors that go into it its ridiculous. i usually only do it in corner after ex siesmo/ BK / focus/ and sometimes an AA HP knuckle
nothing saddens me more than whiffing a viper ultra and proceeding to eat a massive ultra combo in return
edit: even thou shes high execution and takes damage like theres no 2morrow i gotta say shes the funnest character in sf4 to play and the best new character in a design view point imo.

If it's not lag (which it probably is, but can't hurt to cover other options), check that you're always hitting the down-back corner correctly. I know several people that when they first started playing would many times move to down instead of downback and simply just crouch and not block. This is especially likely for users of 360 pads (though not exclusive to this device). Sometimes you can be ALMOST on the corner, but just a tad bit off and be holding back or down instead of downback.
(Oddly enough, I didn't have this issue when I was first learning to play, I had an issue where somehow my fingers would press the medium kick button unintentionally as I go to block down back and 3S always registered it as a hurricane kick and I would get parried and eat corkscrew blow every time so I guess it was a good learning experience.)
when i first played 3mc when i was noob only thing i knew was how to block and press random buttons to hit him and after going 0-37 hes like "you have good footsies" and im like wats that
Another stupid question: With rufus, what is the best combo after you divekick?
Usually, I go divekick -> heavy punch -> tornado
but good players dive kick->light kick->something->heavy punch->tornado. When I try this I can't get anything to link. Sadface. Help
the first combo is fine, but the really good Rufus players go dive -> lk -> hp -> tornado. the lk -> hp is really hard to pull off because it's one of those annoying frame links. You can also go lk -> mp, which is slightly easier to pull off. I can only pull off the lk -> hp link in only half of my attempts.
i hope you know about his lk -> hk (juggle) -> ultra, which is the bread & butter way of using Rufus' ultra. lastly, after dive you can easily grab them. mix up grabbing and lk combos to confuse your opponents.
I think DSP wasn't trying to super, he was trying to fake motions for one and then just throw a regular hadou but game read the previous commands. Irregardless, the videos are all a show.
hm i played the last 3 weeks at a friends house on his ps3... when recently i played over the internet again I suddenly felt the lag. Even in games I would have called lag-free before these 3 weeks. Its almost impossible to throw out narrow link combos. Certain characters become almost impossible to play who rely heavily on small frame links (vega comes to mind) while others like Ryu become way better than they already are, just because their combos dont require strict timing. It pisses me off to a point where I think that its futile to play online and since there wont be any big arcades or smth in germany like EVER, it sadly seems as if its just a waste of time to play online/ trying to get good at SF IV. No offline competition, no chance in getting even half-decent.
