Arkheron looks a like a 3v3 brawler meets TFT/Battlegrounds game. Could be interesting, but for me personally this depends on the degree of RNG they put into this, as these games usually rely quite a bit on this to also appeal to casual players, so not sure what kind of playerbase they want to attract here.

Is it me or they just ripped off Bloodline Champions/Battlerite/VRising from Stunlock Studios, and even their logo (!). What am I missing? https://imgur.com/a/TFOv6Gt There are 4 screenshots and 2 logos. Try to tell which one are from Akheron without reading titles.

Is the strat these days just to have a big launch then not give a fuck after that? Just move onto the next thing? How is any of this sustainable.. Also like, with 49 billion games released every day, how much time is someone supposed to spend on a single game. Especially when it looks like a generic turdsplash. Tbh, the gameplay looks like it could actually be fun. 15 teams fight to ascend? So if you win you move on until there is only one winner in the final round. Is this some sort of MOBA x Heroe's Ascend (Guild Wars), i.e. involving 1v1v1?

Yeah, comments under the IGN review are pure comedy. They are pretty moderate now, but they were WILD day 1. I've never seen so many extatic people in one comment section.

while most jobs are loosely a meritocracy, they are nowhere near the meritocracy that esports, sports, and other specialized careers are. lots of mediocre people can claim to be a professional in their field. some of them even build great resumes and rise to high levels of leadership. game dev is no exception however, when you start a game studio and create its first game, you are entering a world of fierce competition. a brutal meritocracy FGS had a huge advantage when entering this world. just like in the world of sport, some kids are given all the resources while others never even get a shot. there's no way to judge every single employee FGS individually. i'm sure some of them were/are at least Masters level at their job, if not GM or pro. but it's clear now that the overall performance of FGS is... not competitive. these linkedin posts are sad like a gold player crying that something is imba. i feel bad too because of the personal sacrifice involved. like moving to korea with your own money hoping you get good enough to be invited to a team house before your money runs out. welp, money ran out, gg

Well, I read your sarcasm, but Battlerite was good (It's dead now), VRising is good (and it's alive). Edit: Battlerite has exactly the same CCU (59) as SG ATM :D https://steamdb.info/app/504370/charts/ https://steamdb.info/app/2012510/charts/

I also think back to the showmatch game vs TLO a few years ago. A game-designer should have much more knowledge than TLO at the time and thus gain a large build order and strategic advantage - but it felt like the opposite. It indicates he didn't fully understand the game he was developing. Tim Morten. D tier. He doesn't get the lowest rating possible because he was pretty good at getting funding and creating initial hype. That is an important part of being a CEO. Unfortunately he failed at everything else. His major bad decisions were: - Early release. He likely could have gotten further funding. It would have been at a worse valuation - however another year of development before any type of release would have helped for image. - The vision never even made sense in the first place. Let's make a better Sc2 as a startup? Instead of focussing on one key part that you believe you can do much better. - Too greedy monetization/ bad PR. He also made some "questionable" hires, e.g. hiring head of esports years before the game was about to be released. Although most likely that's a small minority of total hires. On top of that I am not a big fan of CEOs that don't have a strong product understanding. Tim Morten has repeatedly shown that his understanding of RTS game design is very simplistic - and I believe it's one of the main reason for why he decided to go for the early release - because he didn't know just how bad the state of the game was.

I think the single biggest fault of Tim Morten was setting out to make a 150 million dollar game (based on their self evaluation), only securing 40 million in funding and then just keep on blindly trying to make a 150 million dollar game. As head of the company its your job to realise you don't have to money to do what you set out to do, and decide to either cut your losses and quit, or refocus to making a product that you do have the money for (and you can make a pretty damn good (non-AAA) game with 40 million). The worst thing you can do it just keep on going as if you don't have a 70% hole in your budget.

I think they were well aware of how unfinished the game was, but they were pessimistic on future fundraising thus had to bet on the chance that the Blizzard RTS fans somehow bought into the hype so much that they were willing to spend a lot of money on a largely unfinished game. But they got further funds after. Although only a few millions and probably at a poor valuation. The problem was that the early access killed the game. It went from having a small chance of succeeding to 0% afterwards as as it could never regain the hype. Tim did not know just how bad the reception would be. Had he understood the product better he would have realized that the early access would kill off any future and taking additional fund-raising - although at a low valuation.

Jokes aside, it's quite disappointing how things turned out, but I guess we did need some new idea in RTS games I suppose.

It was revealed in Frost Giant’s 2024 SEC report that they released into Early Access on the exact date they did in order to delay repayment on a $2 million loan to Silicon Valley Bank. That loan comes due in November. You’re exactly right that they should have reduced scope when it became obvious that money was drying up. But, then as now, Tim refused to accept reality.
