(optional) What do you mean copying tier 3 units? There is a Stormgate reward what gives you Dark Creation what allows you to copy a unit. Copying T3 units turned to be insanely strong, especially if its a dragon. Also the higher the reward tier is the more copy you got (lvl 3 allows you to create 3 additional copies - insta gg most of the time)
The reward is free or cheap i m assuming so you get a massive boost by copying a t3 unit? Sounds like terrible design implementation but the idea itself is interesting. It s like the dark archon s mind control? Could ask a cost based on the target unit to be copied? Or the shadow could take double damage or something.
They could easily limit it in game to t2 units or lower in the same way in BW you can't broodling archons and reavers rather than saying it s banned.
Anyway i haven't watched or touched SG in a while. How are the t3 units? Are they so much stronger than t2 that copying one is enough to turn a game?

T3s are indeed strong compared to T2s and yes they definitely allowing some super strong game ending timings.
The rewards are not free - you supposed to win a stormgate event (what appears in every ~3 mins) to get them. Devs themselves joked with these rewards as "completely balanced" so they know its flawed. There will be definitely some changes the point was to try out as many crazy ideas to check how it works in non internal environment.
I suggest you to try it yourself to get a clearer picture. 1v1 is far from being balanced - but fun.

Well I really hated it during most of the alpha and then the beta before the t3 existed so it would have to be massive changes but i guess it wouldn't cost me anything but time to try it again at some point so i ll take your word for it and see

It seems like people are really upset over early access tags and such. If they want to say the first vanguard campaign is done, great. 1v1 is a bit iffy to say it's complete, if we're missing:
Tier 3 Other units (they had said they might add in other units to fill in missing niches) Stormgates are their first iteration, I'm sure changes are planned Celestial rework Wasn't there a resource rework planned? (I'm not sure if it was just visual or functional, or both) No high ground advantage I vaguely recall reading somewhere that some kind of macro mechanics would be implemented (maybe not, it may have been in a Q&A?)
For me, 1v1 is really fun and I'm enjoying watching it more and more. but I'm also looking forward to the above!

There was a clarification Gerald put out on reddit. Looks like 1v1 is done as much as campaign is judging by their wording. I'm guessing they were running out of time/funds and the rest of that stuff you mentioned is getting shelved so they can push out 3v3, polished co-op etc faster. I'm sure they'll revisit it at some point if things go well but not a priority ATM.

We about to find out whether a clean slate "ex EA" launch can bring in the numbers they need.

Leaving early access, and still only having 1v1 and campaign in a "finished" state seems like a massive mistake to me. If 3v3 and Map Editor are coming in fall you really couldn't wait a couple of months to lift the EA tag?? I saw Tim's LinkedIn post. He said he has been developing for 5 years, and hopes to support the game for another 5, which makes it sound like they're in it for the long haul but I can not fathom the decision to fully launch the game now if it isn't out of dire need to drive in additional revenue streams. The product simply isn't ready. You see how fast they built the campaign? From the early access release to what they have now it's been what, a year? It should take far more than a year to finish a campaign... What I saw in the current iteration is a lot of text bubbles, like I was reading a visual novel. Something I hoped was filler and not final. Which would get replaced by cutscenes. I can't think of another AAA game that tells a campaign like that. The amount of funding Frost Giant had is similar to Expedition 33 which costed under 50 million, and black myth wukong which was estimated at 43 million. I'm sorry. I'm just sorry. This screams incompetency either in hiring or directorial departments. This looks like a game 1 or 2 people could make. Look at godsworn for comparison which was made by 2 people...

My understanding is that removing that tag is the last visibility boost you get in Steam, you’re exiting Early Access.
For Stormgate to stick, it needs a decent player boost, and for those to stick around. Low thousands of concurrents isn’t earth-shattering but you can build on it. There’s a crazy difference in experience with a hundred or so.
I think the fear is they’re emerging from EA officially at Steam’s end but without enough flesh on the bones, and I think that’s a reasonable concern.

I have to agree, the only reason to leave EA without the defining 3v3 is needing more money.
You want people who were waiting to see the game at its best to keep them around.
|
It's going to release, get like 1000 concurrent and then die is my prediction

I'd feel a lot better for them if they had an even a majorly alpha version of 3v3 on this "soft launch". That seems to be the biggest criticism.
I think if people try the game at 0.6, they may be pleasantly surprised. It has come a long way over the past year. Especially if they can get the balance decent. Mid-late game interactions have been cool to watch, but so many games are over quickly with some kind of early tier 1 rush, bunker rush etc.
This thread is an example: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormgate/comments/1m11xgx/reflashs_crazy_tornado_drop_with_rampart_shields/
people are saying it looks nice! (a late game army clash) a downvoted comment saying "If the ingame graphics would look close to this the game would have had a chance." It is the in game graphics!
So if people give it a try, maybe they can get some more players, who knows. It'll also depend on what else is going to be in 0.6.

How's the performance these days?
I read some speculation that they had plans for an innovative, much, much more multithreaded game logic than most RTS games, but couldn't find a way to pull it off right away at least. Without that kind of innovation their latency compensation thingy and high tickrate make the pretty demanding on your hardware, especially single core CPU performance. The 3v3 is going push that requirement even further.
I'm not an expert on RTS engine design (very few people likely are), but it seems plausible to me when you look at how their goals and focus are shifting.

The performance is good for me on a 7800x3D. It was much less good when I was on an i5-6600 :D
I can drop to 50 FPS or so in late game co-op but it's still quite playable. (Maxed graphics with a 3080).

all this talk of 0.6, and hints at what is going to be in it, do we have a rough release date yet? Next Month?

As far as I understand it, 0.6 will be the end of EA which they always said will be late summer 2025. And with 0.6 will be a new and updated roadmap till 1.0
