(As a side-point, I long advocated for an RTS that skips the entire early game and goes straight into midgame. Microing 1 reaper vs 2 zerglings is not that interesting) The game also lacked potential for "big moments". While the intention to make battles longer than Sc2 is a good, we still need abilities that can kill things. If you watch Brood War those storms can be super deadly. same with Lurkers or Reavers. However, if they only dealt 40% of a Marine's HP it would be a lot less interesting.

SC2 increased worker count to make the early game shorter, that combined with larger maps made macro games the default.

BW’s is a pretty slow ramp-up, but there’s a lot of options there, whereas SC2’s got compacted but can be quite stale and samey

Yes they are gradually trying to get closer to that. Same with stormgate and it's fine. But at some point game-devs creating a new game from scratch should just realize to create a game that doesn't just make the duration of early game shorter, but rather completely skips it. Start with a solid economy, some money/or a small army.

Start with a solid economy, some money/or a small army. I think having both types would be nice. The slow early build up is nice to get into the right mental space after the map loads in. Similar to walking out to the lane in Dota clones, there are games that are only about the fighting without creeps and similar mechanics. The ones without the build up are less popular overall but have their own demographics. A large fraction of players enjoy things like no rush or tower defence where they can just build their base. Which I guess is why we have seen the explosion of calm simulators in recent years. Deciding where on the scale you want to be and having offerings all over the scale for players is important.

I actually think this is the exact mindset game devs needs to get away from. I am not specifically talking about building a base per se, but the concept of trying satisfying everyone. Instead - Focus on a specific target group and nail that. As opposed to trying to provide multiple target groups a little bit of everything. Figure out what really matters for the target group and get rid of everything that adds further complexity/learning-barrier but which the target group doesn't care about.

Never worked for me and don't fit the universe of the game at all. Just totally shoehorned in. If I wanted to PvE I'd talk to strangers. For sure, adding depth to your game through incentivizing activity and engagement and having to varying levels of economic growth and trade offs is pretty complex. Feeling sleepy or wanting to sleep when overwhelmed is a common experience. Stress and anxiety can trigger the body's stress response, leading to fatigue and a desire to sleep. This can be a natural way for the body to recover and regulate emotions, but excessive sleeping can also be an unhealthy coping mechanism. Perhaps there is a medication for that.

I wonder how many paying players they would need to keep this running. All the changes in PvP are trying to freshening up the meta and gameplay, I think it's good that they are abandoning the micro fine-tuning balance they have been doing.

All the changes in PvP are trying to freshening up the meta and gameplay, I think it's good that they are abandoning the micro fine-tuning balance they have been doing. I think it's a bit of a shame they went early access too fast. If say early access was released 12 months later the reception much more positive and they could have maintained larger playernumbers. After watching a few hours of stream yesterday my assesment is this: * Graphics better than Sc2 * Early game looks better than Sc2 * Battles still kinda meh. Watching a clump of Vanguard units stand still and not die to healing/shielding is boring. I think the game would benefit heavily from some high-damage skillshots that rewards the opponent for splitting/doding. Now that the unit-movement speed is faster AOE-abilities would work a lot better. And if the opponent doesn't dodge it, it would one-shot the more fragile units in the game. If they can address this, the 1v1 game-play would probably be better than Sc2 - although being 10-20% better than a 15-year old game is probably not enough.

Also the way the direction changed these last few month (compared to the clusterfuck before) makes me almost give them some money. Maybe I'll buy the campaign pack if the new campaign is any good.

I'm not going to jump my opinion and be for or against it yet but if they want to make it free why not just make it free? What would the reason be? Currently, 3 missions are free. When they have more missions, they will make 2 additional ones free for a total of 5. This is the plan: This update: Missions 1-2-3: Free Missions 4-5-6: Paid Chapter 1 Next update: Missions 1-2-3-4-5: Free Missions 6-7-8: Paid Chapter 1 1.0 launch: Missions 1-2-3-4-5: Free Missions 6-7-8: Paid Chapter 1 Missions 9-10-11: Paid Chapter 2 Missions 12-13-14: Paid Chapter 3

In terms of core gameplay changes, it remains to be seen how they all settle but I think they’re showing some good responsiveness to try and address issues. On the latter I think they could have got the requisite playtesting and feedback if they’d have kept it in some state of perpetual open playtesting rather than taking the plunge into EA but hey what’s done is done.
