Can't +1 this enough, I hope it comes to Switch. I've 100% completed this game twice on Wii U, would do it a third time on the Switch. Or even better, give us a sequel. They should work on their naming convention though, XCX2 would start to get confusing.

Though they could go for XCY and remove the gender option as a feature? For a basic re-release CEMU should work fine. You get the emulator features on top as extras and can run higher resolutions.

Nintendo just announced that it has purchased Next Level Games, the developers behind titles like Luigi’s Mansion 3, Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon and the Super Mario Strikers series. Nintendo’s announcement says the deal is expected to be concluded in March, and “will serve to secure the availability of NLG development resources for Nintendo.” To me, I read that and can only see, “It is time for more Super Mario Strikers, my dudes.” NLG’s history of working directly with Nintendo dates back to the studio’s earliest days, when it released Super Mario Strikers on the GameCube in 2005. Other games the Canadian developer has released for Nintendo include Metroid Prime: Federation Force on the 3DS and 2009's Punch-Out!! remake on the Wii. Source

It's a pretty solid game, and I would recommend it, but I'm not enamored by it. Admittedly, I have very high standards for Mario games. It is slightly superior to Super Mario Sunshine, and definitely inferior to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey. I haven't played SMG2 yet. Some of the things I particularly like about SMG: -Amazing graphics; -Really creative abilities; -Solid plot and characters; -Interesting enemies/bosses; -Great music/orchestra. The things I particularly don't like about SMG, especially compared to the other 3-D Mario games I prefer (SM64 and SMO): -Extremely linear play. There's very little *real* exploration within the individual star quests, that the player has control over. Find a launch star -> Auto-fly to exactly where you need to go -> 30 seconds later, find another launch star -> rinse, dry, repeat until you magically arrive at the power star. Mario games have always been in the platformer genre, but I really appreciated how SM64 and SMO (and even SMS) additionally had a supplementary adventure-genre aspect. The adventuring in SMG feels fake and unfulfilling to me, because I'm watching Mario get automatically flown around without me actually doing much. So far, it appears impossible to actually explore - or even backtrack through - a galaxy. Why can't I go in the wrong direction, ever? I just keep getting pushed ahead towards a power star, with a lot of the work automatically being done for me by launch stars. It feels like the game doesn't trust the player, and the gameplay isn't just hand-holding; it's full-on helicopter-parenting. -Lackluster basic moves and slow movement. In SM64, the standard non-jump attack was a short-range flurry of quick punches and kicks, and a decent-range moving dive that kept/increased momentum while running, allowing for fluid mobility and control. In SMG, the moving dive is replaced with a short-range spin attack that *slows you down*, and I cannot begin to explain my frustration with how disjointed and slow the game ends up being for me. It's not the only bad/slow move either; even other moves, like the side jump/flip/somersault, takes way too much momentum to use efficiently. The controls aren't tight, nor are they super responsive, which are necessary in platforming. Also, even some basic walking/running ends up being inconsistent because of the attempted gravity mechanic. It's no wonder that SMG doesn't have as many speedrunners as SM64 or SMO. -The camera. Maybe it's different on the Wii (I'm playing it on the Switch), but the camera is very restrictive. This is particularly bad for SMG for at least two reasons: the short-range spin attack and jump are harder to gauge when attacking an enemy, and the lack of a better camera undermines the movement during the whole "running around mini-planets" phase that happens during every star quest. If the camera can't keep up, or gets locked, or won't rotate in a certain direction, it kneecaps three-dimensional mobility. -Star bits and gyro controls. I really don't like how multiple aspects of the game (from choosing a file, to the pause menu, to collecting star bits, to shooting star bits) requires the tilting of the controller. I get that it was an innovation with the Wii, but there should be a way to disable it. On a related note, the whole "SMG is also a shooter game" secondary genre just doesn't resonate with me. At least it's not as bad as SMS's F.L.U.D.D. attacks and controls. -Quantity over quality. I feel like a ton of these one-star areas could really, really be fleshed out more with multiple objectives, although some friends have told me that this is eventually addressed through something called Prankster Comets. I look forward to encountering them! Maybe SMG will grow on me more, as I play it more. I'll play through the end, of course, but as of right now... SMG is okay. Middle-of-the-pack for a Mario game. Interstellar, but not stellar. EDIT: I just 100%ed Super Mario Galaxy (I won't be playing the mostly-redundant Super Luigi Galaxy). I definitely warmed up to the game a bit more. Not awful.

Since the Wii U and 3DS days, Nintendo has been using something called “NEX” for its multiplayer server system. Almost all games have been tied to it for online functionality. Now though, the company is looking to make a major change. We’re hearing reports that Nintendo is shifting from NEX to a different system, “NPLN”. Monster Hunter Rise is apparently the first very title to make use of it in public. According to Twitter user thomasnet_mc, NPLN is in a preview phase at the moment, and the Monster Hunter demo allowed Nintendo to see how it performed under load. Twitter user OatmealDome says “NEX is at least 18 years old by now, so it’s dated.” You might be surprised to hear that “the Splatoon 2 version has an unused function to check to see if it’s running on Windows 98.” OatmealDome, who tends to be in the know with datamining and other technical findings, says that the shift in server systems isn’t likely to provide better online – at least immediately. Nintendo will instead look to make a seamless transition, and the company can then add new things or make improvements to existing features. Source

There are some new issues with cameras and button-remapping/controls, but overall I'd say yes. Also, I'm secretly hoping that the "end date" of March 31st is actually going to be a surprise release of SMG2 patched into the game, and not actually the end date of the game at all, but I have no evidence substantiating that dream.
