Very surprised at the anti-Punk remarks coming out after Evo's conclusion (not referring to the posts above).
Met and talked to Punk several times, and what I've heard from many players, Punk's "alpha"/heel is more of a persona tbh. Quite a nice dude in person.

If there's a person who not only plays a heel, but is also an asshole irl, its got to be FChamp.

Yeah for sure. When I say Punk's heel I don't mean it in a bad way (I know you said "not referring to the posts above"). He's clearly playing it up and it's hilarious to watch a newer face completely scramble the scene. I'm sure a lot of people don't like it though. The most telling thing imo is that Punk was emotional after GF, not just salty. If he was just de cocky alfa he probably wouldn't be so passionate and invested.

He became a "heel" literally bc he was defending himself from older players in the scene trying to bully him. For example, Gootecks was making fun of how he looks (while LIVE on stream!) and implying things like he was only winning bc he's a "pad player". This was before any of the cockiness or "alpha" comments.

He didn't want to let ppl bully him, so he said he would bully them.

But seriously, when he acts cocky, can he even keep a straight face? Kid is just having fun, and the "alpha" cockiness was his way to prevent the old school players from clowning him.

If people want real cocky players? FChamp as mentioned above is one. But how about all the old school players who can't perform anymore, so they clown new players, try to act like their play is not legitimate bc the game doesn't take skill, and throw out excuses for every sub par performance.

Gootecks? Yes... I'm talking about people just like him. Known for being a dick to people who arent big names in tournaments. On his gameplay, first it's the characters, then his char is released and becomes top tier, then it's bc he's a stick player and all these pad players have an advantage, then he can't even perform on a hitbox and loses to stick players. So then now, just give up and build popularity by dressing up, and hire some other people to make media better than he can & leech off of it. With the occasional staged skits & tshirts to take advantage of the FGC with his constant get rich quick schemes.

I didn't even watch anything beside the Grand Finals and a few of Haitani's matches for SFV. I just can't bother myself to care about the game, it plays and looks so dull. Only the players and the story can keep me somehow interested.

Full on for Guiltygear now tho, damn that game is everything I wish a fighting to be.

Yeah... At least Gootecks blamed pad players for his drop in performance. He claimed he could not compete with pad players anymore. So he switched to hitbox... and still performs badly lol

He took his "heel" persona way too far at moments, and clearly was just straight up disrespecting people in tournaments at a certain point. He toned it back a little, but he was clearly cocky as shit going into this tournament, because he didn't display any new tech, and was doing the same shit as always with no improvements or variations to what he was doing. Tokido showed up with new tech, new patterns, and basically bodied him.

Punk is a phenomenal player, I do not dispute that at all. But he certainly took things abit far at times during tournament play. He's not Fchamp level of assholeness, but he certainly was no saint during the past 6 months or so. Don't fan boy and defend him, Punk was still an asshole at times, and he ate a whole lot of humble pie in the GF versus a clearly more prepared player. Confidence was not the reason why Tokido won, he won because he was straight up in better form.

EVO finals were great.

Kinda feel bad for Punk, choking so badly and not having the experience to take a breather and get everything back under control.

Pretty upset about Capcom for the Abigail situtaion, though. I don't like the "silly" designed characters, and he definitely seems like one of them. Also, doesn't look like your above to jump over him, and I have no idea how anyone would even throw him???

First time in SF5 that I haven't thought a character looked remotely interesting after the trailer... i hope he ends up playing/feeling fun, but as of right now, I don't see him adding anything "Good" to the game...

Pretty glad Punk got bodied TBH. He was getting way too big of a head thinking he could just remain at the top and beat people purely on reaction timing and spacing. There was definitely some choking, but Tokido really pushed him hard and pressured him by beating him in the neutral or at least contesting it with st.mk, which Punk really had no answer for. If Tokido was abit better on his AA game he probably wouldn't have even lost a round TBH.

Think eating a ton of humble pie in the GF will finally make him realize that being an "Alpha" doesn't mean shit if he can't come up with the goods when it really counts. Will probably make him grow up and be a much better player too.

Honestly if you follow him, a lot of his "cockiness" is just a front anyway. They edit his interviews to make it look like hes cockier than it is, for example the ELeague one. In reality, when Punk first started taking over the scene, everyone was making fun of him (even Gootecks while commentating) so he started his cocky attitude to kinda bully the bullies. He says this in the ELeague video, but they completely edited the order of everything happening to make it look like he was more self centered.

With that said, you could clearly see Punk was choking in his playstyle. His AA's stopped. No shimmies at all??? That's the cornerstone of Punk's spacing/neutral gameplay, and once you seen after the reset where he wasn't doing any of that, it became obvious that he fell apart mentally. This, combined with Tokidos confidence from playing consecutive sets, he had no chance.

With Tokido playing so on point, I'm not sure who would have won if Punk was not choking. But it would have at least been competitive. What we seen was not even competitive. Top 8 was great, and the finals made a great story because Tokido's such an appreciated personality and it's completely deserving that he has a EVO win under his belt. But the actual match for finals was a let down imo. Punk/Tokido showdown should have been fireworks!

Punk only started choking after Tokido basically bodied him in the first set by dominating the neutral game. That's where Punk makes his money, by controlling space and then getting frame traps and pressuring his opponent into making mistakes for the mix-up game. Tokido however basically stopped him cold. It's not like Punk just suddenly stopped knowing how to play SF, it's that his ground game was in complete shambles because he couldn't deal with Tokido's tech. Once that happened, he had to pay alot more attention to getting hit by random normals on the ground than he normally does, which results in his bad AA game towards the end where he ate dive kicks and jump ins for free.

Punk lost 10-0 in a set to Tokido prior to Evo. Tokido was the one player Punk didn't want to see outside of maybe Itabashi, and that's mostly because good Gief players can win from like 1% health no matter the MU. He definitely mentally fell apart in the 2nd set, but the 1st set was straight up Tokido dominating Punk.

They cut away from Punk/Tokido before the match actually started too, and when they cut back to Punk he'd just done the same eye rub and put his glasses back on, so waterworks might've started well before.

Clearly an emotional moment for him just being in the finals.

Yup, after promoting sticks being better for years. It's just displacement though, bc he's not a top player anymore.

Sticks USED to be better and had significant advantages over pads. Evo and other major tournaments used to ban remapping of buttons. Also sticks are in fact much more accurate with their movements and much more precise. Try playing something like CvS2 let alone something like Alpha 3, 3rd Strike, or ST on a pad and you'll see a massive difference. There's no difference now because fighting games are now much more pad friendly, as all the companies (Capcom, Namco, etc.) are lowering the entry bar.

Well my main issue is, regardless of the "controller type" debate, Gootecks used it as an excuse, when the entire pro scene (especially the Japanese scene) is still having absolutely no issues winning on stick. And if that rly was his problem, switching would have improved his performance.

It didn't lol.

Sadly a lot of ppl take him seriously, but idk, I'm not really a fan. He does do some good for the FGC, I'm not gona say he doesn't contribute. But the amount of exploitation of the FGC the man does is ridiculous, and he represents a perfect example of a lot of the negative aspects of the "old school FGC".

I'm actually glad that there's so many pad players and that they do so well. The old stick v pad debate is silly, it's clearly personal preference and there's great players using both. Practice > theory. Fighting games might be easier to learn on stick because the buttons are more intuitive (esp if there's more than four) or something. But if you're playing to win and on that grind, play what you like most. All's fair these days.

Except hitbox tho. That shit's CHEAP

Hitbox isn't exactly easy mode. I'd say a stick springing back to neutral is an advantage over the Hitbox since with the latter you have to consciously make the effort to lift up your fingers at any given moment to not fuck up any inputs when you could've just let the stick work on its own given the former. If you're having a bad day/losing streak/playing lazily, a Hitbox will just make it worse.

Plus the thing is loud as hell, especially when you're doing directional inputs on KoF for example, making you susceptible to "hard" reads. I guess you could try to mask yourself by doing fake inputs or something, but that's just more work.

With these new sideways ergonomic mice coming out, I'm beginning to think pads are actually the most ergonomic since they keep your wrists in natural position if you hold them normally (some people still hover their right hand over the buttons like on a stick). Still wouldn't use them for CvS2 or 3S with all that kara cancelling and shit though

Each input device has its own tradeoffs. I agree at the end of the day just practice with whatever you're most comfortable with and dominate, like John Choi with his 20? year-old wooden mas stick and Nalra with his ball mouse.

Oh Hitboxes def have a serious learning curve. I'd never argue that. They just fascinate me. So much potential. I almost wish I had bought one for Marvel 3 a few years ago. Too lazy now when my friends barely play anymore.
